COVER STORY 封 面 故 事In the second of the RTHK Quartet’s anniversary concerts, two pieces of music could not be more contrasted than thesequartets by Mendelssohn and Shostakovich. The first reflects Mendelssohn’s youthfulness, and the other reflects the unendingpressure under which Shostakovich created his music.香 港 電 台 弦 樂 四 重 奏 以 音 樂 反 映 兩 段 完 全 不 同 的 人 生 : 孟 德 爾 遜 的 青 春 朝 氣 對 比 蕭 斯 達 高 維 契 的 鬱 抑 不 安 , 氣 氛 南 轅北 轍 卻 值 得 細 味 。Felix Mendelssohn: String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13孟 德 爾 遜 :A 小 調 第 二 弦 樂 四 重 奏 , 作 品 13Mendelssohn completed his String Quartet No. 2 in 1827 when he was only 18. Though the piece is numbered as ‘No. 2’, it was actually his first stringquartet composition.Mendelssohn greatly admired Beethoven and he made many references to Beethoven’s late string quartets in his own quartet No. 2. The first movement,which is in sonata form, begins with the motif ‘Ist es wahr? ’ (‘Is it true?’) from a song (Op. 9 No. 1) that Mendelssohn wrote previously. This cyclic motifacts as an echo to the ‘Muß es sein? ’ (Must it be?) motif in Beethoven’s Quartet No.16. The fugal treatment of the second movement resembles Beethoven’sQuartet No. 11. The third movement is a typical Mendelssohnian sound: lively and joyful. The finale is modeled on the finale of Beethoven’s Quartet No.16,forming the deepest tribute to Mendelssohn’s musical hero.孟 德 爾 遜 在 1827 年 完 成 這 首 第 二 弦 樂 四 重 奏 , 當 時 他 只 有 18 歲 。 這 部 作 品 的 編 號 雖 然 是「 第 二 」, 事 實 上 卻 是 他 第 一 部 創 作 的 弦 樂 四 重 奏 。孟 德 爾 遜 對 剛 過 世 不 久 的 貝 多 芬 推 崇 備 至 , 他 創 作 這 首 弦 樂 四 重 奏 時 , 也 特 別 向 前 輩 借鏡 。 孟 德 爾 遜 引 用 自 己 另 一 作 品 《 眞 的 ?》 的 動 機 開 始 了 奏 鳴 曲 式 的 第 一 樂 章 , 而 這 動 機 貫穿 全 曲 , 與 貝 多 芬 第 十 六 弦 樂 四 重 奏 《 非 如 此 不 可 ?》 的 動 機 相 呼 應 。 第 二 樂 章 慢 板 以 賦格 形 式 展 開 , 仿 照 貝 多 芬 的 第 十 一 弦 樂 四 重 奏 。 第 三 樂 章 則 是 典 型 的 孟 德 爾 遜 風 格 , 輕 鬆愉 快 。 終 樂 章 幾 乎 參 照 貝 多 芬 第 十 六 弦 樂 四 重 奏 的 終 樂 章 重 寫 而 成 ! 可 見 孟 德 爾 遜 對 貝 多芬 的 敬 佩 。Dmitri Shostakovich: String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110蕭 斯 達 高 維 契 :C 小 調 第 八 弦 樂 四 重 奏 , 作 品 110A bust of Mendelssohn孟 德 爾 遜 的 石 膏 像Dmitri Shostakovich spent three days finishing his String Quartet No. 8 in 1960. Though the dedication on the score is ‘to the victims of fascism andwar’, people around Shostakovich gave various interpretations: his son Maxim thought that his father wanted to dedicate the piece to ‘the victims oftotalitarianism’; his daughter Galina thought that her father just wanted to dedicate the piece to himself and that the published dedication was imposed bythe government; his friend Lev Lebedinsky thought that the piece was an epitaph because he knew that Shostakovich had been planning on committingsuicide at that time. Despite these differences in opinion, this work was written during a time of great difficulty for Shostakovich. He was sufferingphysically from a diagnosis of polio and was suffering mentally from being forced to join the Communist Party.The work is divided into five movements and is played without a break. Besides the signature motif ‘DSCH’ (D-E flat-C-B), Shostakovich made many otherquotations in this string quartet: we find references to his symphonies Nos.1 and 5 in the first movement; to his Piano Trio No. 2 in the second movement;to his first cello concerto in the third movement; and parts of his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District in the fourth and fifth movements. Liu.喬 布 斯 曾 說 :「 成 就 的 途 徑 就 是 熱 愛 所 做 的 事 」。 我 同 意 , 因 為 有 愛 , 所 以 能 夠 無 私 地 、 全 心 全 意 地 奉 獻 , 不 論 對 象 是 工 作 、 興 趣 、或 是 人 , 也 都 一 樣 。 在 新 一 輯 的 「 酷 愛 音 樂 」 中 , 我 請 來 五 位 熱 愛 音 樂 的 朋 友 , 包 括 鍾 普 洋 、 莊 梅 岩 、 梁 卓 偉 、 鄭 詩 文 和 劉 元 生 , 分享 他 們 的 音 樂 故 事 。31/10 - 4/11 : 鍾 普 洋 Po Chung職 業 : 快 遞 和 物 流 公 司 創 辦 人 之 一 , 現 於 香 港 大 學 敎 創 業 學 。音 樂 背 景: 讀 小 學 期 間 , 鍾 普 洋 已 經 用 72 轉 唱 片 , 欣 賞 貝 多 芬 的 交 響 曲 。 後 來 , 他 更 自 學 結他 、 鋼 琴 和 口 琴 , 透 過 音 樂 , 結 識 了 一 班 好 友 ; 及 至 大 學 期 間 , 更 積 極 參 與 學 校 的合 唱 團 。學 音 樂 的 方 法 : 鍾 普 洋 的 工 作 十 分 繁 忙 , 經 常 要 穿 梭 各 地 , 於 是 他 便 帶 了 一 套 古 典 名 曲 唱 片 , 在 飛機 上 一 邊 處 理 文 件 , 一 邊 聽 音 樂 。 為 了 更 加 深 入 認 識 古 典 音 樂 , 他 還 特 別 購 買 了 一套 由 三 藩 市 音 樂 學 院 推 出 的 影 碟 , 在 工 餘 時 進 修 。Po Chun, Co-founder of a major delivery company, has a strong curiosity and an equally strongpassion for learning. When he was in primary school, he listened to Beethoven’s symphonies on oldrecords. Later on, he taught himself guitar, piano, and harmonica. Although he was extremely busy,he brought the popular classics CDs to the plane and listened to them while reading documents.To further widen his knowledge in classical music, he bought the educational DVDs by the SanFrancisco Conservatory and went through the series whenever he had time.7/11 - 11/11 : 莊 梅 岩 Candace Chong職 業音 樂 背 景: 劇 作 家 , 曾 四 次 獲 得 香 港 舞 台 劇 獎 的 最 佳 劇 本 獎: 莊 梅 岩 成 長 於 一 個 貧 窮 的 家 庭 , 為 了 能 夠 學 習 鋼 琴 , 曾 跪 在 地 上 懇 求 父 親 答 允 。 她特 別 鍾 愛 彈 蕭 邦 的 《 幻 想 即 興 曲 》。 後 來 , 在 丈 夫 的 引 領 下 , 她 更 迷 上 爵 士 樂 。學 音 樂 的 方 法 : 幾 乎 每 次 寫 作 的 時 候 , 莊 梅 岩 也 會 播 放 音 樂 , 讓 音 樂 帶 她 走 進 一 個 幻 想 的 國 度 。當 她 創 作 得 獎 作 品 《 聖 荷 西 謀 殺 案 》 時 , 曾 連 續 地 播 放 由 Luara Fygi 演 唱 的 歌 曲《I Will Wait or You》 多 達 百 幾 次 。Four times winner of the Best Script Award at the Hong Kong Drama Awards, Candace Chong isnot only a writer, but also a passionate music lover. She grew up in a poor household. In order tobe able to learn the piano, she knelt down to beg for her father’s approval. When practicing, she isparticularly fond of playing Chopin’s Fantasie-Impromptu. Because of her husband, she has enteredthe world of jazz. Candace sees a lot of similarities between drama and music; whenever she writesa script, she puts on music, which would transport her to the imaginary world. COLUMNS 專 欄14/11 - 18/11 : 梁 卓 偉 Gabriel Leung職 業音 樂 背 景: 特 首 辦 公 室 主 任: 音 樂 , 在 梁 卓 偉 的 生 命 中 是 不 可 缺 少 的 。 他 的 母 親 是 一 位 音 樂 老 師 , 耳 濡 目 染 下 , 他自 幼 學 習 鋼 琴 和 敲 擊 樂 , 並 在 葉 氏 兒 童 合 唱 團 擔 任 男 童 聲 高 音 和 指 揮 。 在 加 拿 大 時 ,他 選 擇 了 醫 學 和 音 樂 作 為 雙 主 修 科 , 並 擔 任 葉 氏 兒 童 合 唱 團 ( 加 拿 大 分 部 ) 的 總 指 揮 和總 監 。 梁 卓 偉 也 熱 衷 於 兒 童 音 樂 敎 育 , 現 為 香 港 兒 童 交 響 樂 團 的 榮 譽 客 席 指 揮 。 除 了古 典 音 樂 , 他 也 喜 愛 爵 士 樂 。難 忘 的 經 歷: 少 年 時 期 , 梁 卓 偉 會 在 練 琴 室 溫 習 , 興 之 所 至 , 便 會 放 下 書 本 , 彈 琴 自 娛 。 讀 醫 期間 , 他 更 試 過 不 選 修 星 期 五 下 午 的 課 , 以 便 有 充 裕 的 時 間 , 前 往 音 樂 廳 欣 賞 演 出 。Director of the Chief Executive’s Office, Professor Gabriel Leung fell passionately in love with musicat an early age under the guidance of his mother, a music teacher. He learned piano, percussion, sangboy soprano and conducted the Yip’s Children’s Choir in his teens. Later on, he read double majorsin medicine and music, while being the Chief Conductor and Director of the Yip’s Children’s Choir(Canada). During his school years, he often studied in practice rooms so that he could play the pianowhenever he wanted. Also, he would purposely avoid having classes on Friday afternoons so he couldtravel to hear concerts. Returning to Hong Kong, Gabriel is now the Honorary Guest Conductor of theHong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra, leading the Orchestra on tour as part of his busy schedule.21/11 - 25/11 : 鄭 詩 文 Jess Chang職 業音 樂 背 景: 電 子 商 務 經 理: 鄭 詩 文 自 幼 便 熱 愛 音 樂 , 但 到 大 學 時 , 才 有 機 會 正 式 學 習 大 提 琴 。 她 更 把 大 提 琴 視 為生 命 中 的 最 佳 伴 侶 , 連 上 班 也 會 帶 著 大 提 琴 , 方 便 隨 時 練 琴 。 她 多 年 刻 苦 地 學 習 , 也參 加 在 歐 洲 舉 行 的 大 師 班 。 另 外 , 幾 乎 每 次 旅 行 , 她 處 理 完 機 票 和 酒 店 後 , 便 會 立 刻購 買 當 地 音 樂 會 的 門 劵 。難 忘 的 經 歷 : 為 了 避 免 騷 擾 其 他 人 , 鄭 詩 文 要 四 出 尋 找 練 琴 的 地 點 。 她 曾 在 壁 球 場 、 後 樓 梯 , 甚 至卡 拉 OK 房 中 練 琴 。 有 一 次 , 在 深 夜 時 份 , 她 在 中 文 大 學 的 一 間 課 室 練 琴 , 因 為 漆 黑一 片 , 一 位 路 過 的 學 生 , 還 誤 以 為 她 是 女 鬼 , 被 嚇 了 一 跳 。Jess Chang is a one of the most enthusiastic music lovers I have ever met. She started learning thecello in her university years, and practiced diligently to improve her playing. As she does not want todisturb her family, she practices in every possible place, including back stairs, squash courts, and evenkaraoke rooms. Once she found a room at the Hong Kong Chinese University and practiced there inthe dark. At midnight, a student passed by. He was terrified because he thought he saw a ghost. Afteryears of hard work, Jess can participate in master-classes in Europe.28/11 - 2/12 : 劉 元 生 Y. S. Liu職 業音 樂 背 景: 商 人 、 香 港 管 弦 樂 團 董 事 局 主 席 、 香 港 愛 樂 團 主 席 和 首 席: 現 為 香 港 管 弦 樂 團 董 事 局 主 席 的 劉 元 生 , 曾 在 香 港 管 弦 樂 團 轉 為 職 業 團 前 , 擔 任 小 提琴 手 。 另 外 , 於 1969 年 , 他 是 香 港 首 次 灌 錄 《 梁 祝 》 協 奏 曲 的 小 提 琴 獨 奏 。 後 來 ,他 在 卑 斯 省 創 立 樂 團 , 又 在 本 地 創 立 香 港 愛 樂 團 , 與 一 眾 業 餘 音 樂 愛 好 者 為 慈 善 演出 。難 忘 的 經 歷 : 年 幼 時 , 劉 元 生 在 洗 手 間 練 小 提 琴 時 , 被 路 過 的 大 師 富 華 聽 到 , 便 隨 即 收 他 為 徒 。他 常 到 富 華 的 家 中 欣 賞 音 樂 , 兩 人 亦 師 亦 友 , 還 經 常 一 同 演 奏 室 樂 。Not only an entrepreneur, Y. S. Liu is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Hong KongPhilharmonic Society, and Chairman and concertmaster of the SAR Philharmonic Orchestra. The lattergroup, which is formed by amateur music lovers, is known for its charity work in Hong Kong. Y. S.Liu studied violin under the tutelage of the renowned Professor Arrigo Foa and through music, theybecame life-long friends. In 1969, Y. S. Liu became the first violinist in Hong Kong to record theButterfly Lovers Concerto.17 FINE MUSIC |November 2011

COLUMNS 專 欄撰 文 : 朱 振 威星 期 六 下 午 5 時 至 7 時藝 術 是 表 達 人 類 情 感 的 方 法 , 特 色 各 異 。《 詩 經 》「 毛 詩 序 」云 :「 詩 者 , 志 之 所 之 也 , 在 心 為 志 , 發 言 為 詩 , 情 動 于 中 而 形於 言 , 言 之 不 足 , 故 嗟 嘆 之 , 嗟 嘆 之 不 足 , 故 詠 歌 之 , 詠 歌 之 不足 , 不 知 手 之 舞 之 足 之 蹈 之 也 。」 當 中 提 到 一 個 又 一 個 的 層 次 :心 有 所 想 就 寫 詩 , 用 言 語 表 達 , 言 語 不 足 就 要 嗟 嘆 出 來 ; 仍 然 不足 就 要 唱 出 來 , 唱 也 表 達 不 到 就 要 跳 出 來 !舞 蹈 是 投 入 全 身 的 一 種 表 演 形 式 , 當 中 隱 含 節 拍 韻 律 , 所 以 音 樂與 舞 蹈 , 儘 管 都 可 以 獨 立 存 在 , 但 更 多 時 間 , 兩 家 也 是 在 一 起 互相 補 足 , 更 完 整 的 表 達 人 類 感 情 世 界 的 精 神 面 貌 。一 說 到 古 典 音 樂 的 舞 曲 , 大 家 最 先 想 到 柴 可 夫 斯 基 的 三 大 芭 蕾 舞劇 :《 天 鵝 湖 》、《 睡 美 人 》 與 《 胡 桃 夾 子 》。 其 實 早 在 文 藝 復興 時 代 , 器 樂 作 品 中 已 經 出 現 大 量 舞 曲 。 到 巴 羅 克 時 代 仍 然 歷 久不 衰 。國 際 化 的 組 曲巴 羅 克 時 期 的 組 曲 (suite), 就 是 將 一 系 列 的 舞 蹈 音 樂 放 在 一 起 的套 曲 。 當 時 的 組 曲 都 有 指 定 的 種 類 ( 但 有 些 少 加 減 彈 性 ), 次 序 也有 先 後 。 組 曲 之 中 會 出 現 的 舞 曲 , 可 謂 非 常 國 際 化 , 例 如 阿 勒 曼 舞曲 (allemande) 來 自 德 國 ; 庫 朗 特 舞 曲 (courante) 來 自 法 國 ; 薩 拉 邦 舞曲 (sarabande) 來 自 西 班 牙 ; 基 格 舞 曲 (gigue) 來 自 英 國 。說 到 寫 組 曲 最 拿 手 的 , 當 然 是 巴 赫 ! 除 了 給 鍵 盤 的 六 首 法 國 組 曲 與六 首 英 國 組 曲 , 還 有 大 提 琴 家 的 「 聖 經 」— 六 首 無 伴 奏 大 提 琴 組曲 。 所 以 , 台 灣 編 舞 家 林 懷 民 在 舞 碼 《 水 月 》 用 了 巴 赫 的 無 伴 奏 大提 琴 組 曲 , 絕 對 合 情 合 理 。( 當 然 林 懷 民 所 編 的 並 不 是 古 代 歐 洲 舞蹈 !) 說 不 定 巴 赫 本 身 也 是 位 「 舞 林 高 手 」?多 寫 的 原 因 , 但 我 卻 會 想 像 , 創 作 及 演 奏 這 些 舞 曲 , 是 來 自 他 的愛 國 情 操 。 馬 祖 卡 與 波 蘭 舞 曲 , 都 是 來 自 他 故 鄉 的 音 樂 。 雖 然 他這 些 舞 曲 都 不 是 嚴 格 根 據 該 兩 種 舞 曲 的 格 式 寫 成 , 但 肯 定 是 他 對自 己 故 鄉 印 象 的 投 射 。如 果 要 說 為 鋼 琴 而 寫 的 真 正 民 族 舞 曲 , 那 就 要 數 匈 牙 利 作 曲 家 巴托 。 巴 托 對 節 奏 非 常 敏 感 , 他 的 母 親 憶 述 巴 托 很 小 的 時 候 就 對 舞蹈 的 節 奏 非 常 留 心 , 也 能 為 舞 蹈 拍 和 。 後 來 巴 托 到 不 同 地 方 搜 集民 謠 , 研 究 各 地 民 間 音 樂 , 舞 蹈 音 樂 是 他 其 中 一 個 研 究 的 範 圍 ,他 更 將 研 究 心 得 放 進 自 己 的 創 作 裡 , 寫 出 一 系 列 以 民 間 舞 蹈 為 基礎 的 新 作 品 , 諸 如 兩 套 羅 馬 尼 亞 舞 曲 、 舞 蹈 組 曲 、《 小 宇 宙 》 裡面 的 六 首 保 加 利 亞 節 奏 舞 曲 等 。新 世 紀 舞 曲從 古 典 時 期 奏 鳴 曲 和 交 響 曲 採 用 了 小 步 舞 曲 為 第 三 樂 章 開 始 , 就注 定 舞 曲 已 成 了 一 種 獨 立 於 舞 蹈 的 音 樂 體 裁 。 幾 乎 大 部 份 有 份 量的 作 曲 家 都 曾 寫 過 舞 曲 , 例 如 學 任 何 樂 器 的 人 都 幾 乎 奏 過 貝 多 芬的 G 大 調 小 步 舞 曲 或 是 布 拉 姆 斯 的 第 五 匈 牙 利 舞 曲 , 馬 勒 的 交 響曲 也 時 常 採 用 蘭 特 勒 舞 曲 (ländler) 作 為 其 中 一 個 樂 章 !話 雖 如 此 , 當 我 想 列 舉 二 十 世 紀 重 要 的 舞 曲 作 品 , 卻 留 意 到 有 兩部 不 可 不 知 的 作 品 都 是 為 了 真 正 的 舞 蹈 演 出 而 寫 的 。 史 特 拉 汶 斯基 為 戴 亞 吉 列 夫 的 舞 團 而 寫 的 《 春 之 祭 》 引 發 巴 黎 樂 迷 騷 動 當 然家 傳 戶 曉 , 拉 威 爾 的 《 波 萊 羅 》 也 是 為 了 舞 蹈 家 魯 賓 斯 坦 夫 人 的舞 作 而 寫 。 後 者 以 小 鼓 不 斷 重 覆 波 萊 羅 舞 曲 的 節 奏 , 但 旋 律 卻 不慍 不 火 , 不 帶 一 絲 舞 曲 節 拍 ; 兩 種 元 素 分 離 卻 又 統 一 , 造 就 了 一首 獨 特 的 舞 曲 。指 尖 土 風 舞為 鋼 琴 而 寫 的 千 千 萬 萬 作 品 中 , 也 有 不 少 舞 曲 。 以 蕭 邦 為 例 , 他 寫過 不 少 馬 祖 卡 (mazurka)、 波 蘭 舞 曲 (polonaise) 和 圓 舞 曲 (waltz),而 這 些 舞 曲 以 數 量 計 , 幾 乎 佔 他 所 有 作 品 的 一 半 — 單 單 馬 祖 卡 就有 五 十 九 首 , 是 他 數 量 最 多 的 樂 種 ! 舞 曲 容 易 吸 引 聽 眾 也 許 是 蕭 邦11 月 份 的 「 情 有 獨 鍾 」, 蕭 程 佳 明 和 彭 禮 傑 會 以 千 變 萬 化 的 舞 曲為 主 題 , 動 感 源 源 不 絕 。 逢 星 期 六 下 午 5 時 至 7 時 , 不 容 錯 過 !In November’s All or Nothing, Rebecca Siu and Ben Pelletier bringyou compilations of dance music, from classical to modern, from folkdance to ballet, to set your feet a-tapping! Arts Happenings 藝 壇 快 訊A joint commission by the Opera Hong Kong (OHK) and theLeisure and Cultural Services Department, the new opera Dr. SunYat-sen, had its premiere in Hong Kong Cultural Centre’s GrandTheatre, following its last-minute cancellation by Beijing’s NationalCentre for the Performing Arts.Opera Hong Kong announced in a press release that Beijing’swithdrawal was due to ‘logistical reasons. However, according toa report in The New York Times, it was ‘official objections to themusic’ that led the opera being banned. Composer Huang Ruo’smanagement said a government official went to rehearsals anddecided that the music was inappropriate. Music critic NormanLebrecht added ‘one senior official decided … that the music was‘too modern’ for senior [Communist] Party cadres.’Librettist Candace Chong Mui-ngam was interviewed by Radio4’s Arts News after the Hong Kong premiere. She said that, at thetime of writing the script, she only knew that the opera would bestaged in Hong Kong. She did not consider the potential problemswith the opera’s story, she just wanted to write about a subject thatinterested her. If the story was offensive to some people, she did notfeel that this was her concern. She reported that the production teamnever interfered in her freedom of writing. The loss of the Beijingperformance led her to think that each script has its own destiny.Dr. Sun Yat-sen was written to commemorate the centenary of the1911 Revolution. With music written by Huang Ruo, libretto byCandace Chong Mui-ngam, and under the direction of Chen Xinyi,the opera is about the love story between Sun Yat-sen and his thirdwife, Soong Chingling, and the relationship between Soong’s fatherand Sun. The opera was selected by New York City Opera as one ofthe six operas to participate in its Contemporary American OperaLab project in May, where the first act of the opera was presented,accompanied by a Western orchestra. The full opera was scheduledto have its premiere in Beijing, also with a Western orchestra.The Hong Kong performance from 13 to 16 October at the HongKong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre was its premiere with Chineseorchestra and was accompanied by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestraunder conductor Yan Huichang. This saxophonist’s fame spreadbeyond jazz circles (where he was a noted soloist) in the 1990s when he formed the groundbreakingensemble New Cool Collective and then his own quartet.6 NovemberProgramme One touches down in northern Holland for Dr. Lonnie Smith and the Concertgebouw JazzOrchestra. For over five decades Smith has furthered the sound of jazz organ. Jazz Times magazine recentlydescribed him as ‘a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban.’ This kind of description suggests thelevel of complexity that he exhibits in his music and the pure amazement that it elicits. Then we go on toAmsterdam for the Christian McBride and his Inside Straight Quintet. Bassist extraodinaire Christian McBridehas been regarded as one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 yearsand he’s not yet 40. He’s worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, theShanghai Quartet, and the Sonus Quartet. Then we land at the famous Melkweg (Milky Way) Club for thePloctones – a ‘four headed monster’ that’s currently Holland’s most successful band. The Ploctones express afeeling of liberation that can only exist in your wildest fantasies. The saxophonist is a member of Amsterdam’svenerable ICP Orchestra.20 NovemberProgramme Three has sounds of Havana, Brussels, and Beirut. Cuba’s Harold is at the Bimhuis. The 24-yearoldLopez-Nussa was born into a Cuban musical dynasty - the nephew of famous pianist Ernan Lopez-Nussaand the son of drummer Ruy Lopez-Nussa. Harold Lopez-Nussa’s formidble technique on the keyboardearned him the Laureate Prize at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005. The Brussels JazzOrchestra plays the music of trumpeter Bert Joris who put Flemish/Belgian jazz on the map. Finally an OrientalinfluencedDutch trio called Jungle Boldie completes this evening of live music from The Netherlands. Sanderling was born toJewish parents in 1912 in Arys, East Prussia (now Orzysz in Poland). He beganhis career as assistant conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 1936, hefled to the Soviet Union and assisted George Sebastian at the Moscow RadioSymphony Orchestra. He later joined Yevgeny Mravinsky as joint PrincipalConductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic, a post he held from 1942 to 1960.He then returned to East Germany and raised the Berlin Symphony Orchestraand took charge of the Dresden Staatskapelle in 1960.In 1977, Sanderling left the Berlin Symphony and started guest conductingvarious orchestras abroad. The Los Angeles Philharmonic invited him to betheir Permanent Conductor, a post Sanderling turned down. COLUMNS 專 欄Maureen BujadalberaThe composer, pianist, and teacher Franz Liszt was extremelyinfluential in a number of disparate ways: he’s the man who turnedaround the piano so we could admire his fine finger work as heplayed, he developed new technical performance methods, andhe invented the symphonic poems for orchestra. One of his mostnotable contributions, however, was to the art of transcription: herewrote other composers’ music for his own medium of the piano,and in doing so, placed his own inimitable stamp on the music.On Tuesday, 27 December, at 4 pm, Friends of Radio 4 Society andRTHK Radio 4 are jointly organizing a solo performance by pianistWong Chi-yan on the music of Liszt. This music salon will surveyLiszt’s music from every aspect of his career, and, more importantly,will permit us to see his influence carrying on to today’s performers.Pianist Wong Chi-yan was born in Hong Kong and has been a longtimecompetitor in Europe. He currently studies at the Royal Academyof Music with Christopher Elton and will graduate in 2012. He madehis Hong Kong debut in March 2010 at the Hong Kong Arts Festivaland has also performed in France, Germany, and England, mostnotably for the Liszt Society of London.On this Liszt concert, Chi-yan will show not only his mastery ofLiszt’s virtuosic music, he also takes up another challenge offered byLiszt in doing his own transcription of two works. Chi-yan has a verystrong belief about this:In the spirit of Liszt, it is a moral obligation that I liberate thewritten page into sound. Liszt encouraged his most giftedstudents to recreate his music in this way, especially with theHungarian Rhapsodies, opera fantasies, transcriptions, etc. Thisapplies to the Héxameron Variations, too, no doubt. Study ofthe Liszt Sonata revealed the composer’s own vision, and itis this that I want to evoke, and not just purely the notes inthemselves, which are the most material aspect of music itself.After all, the Liszt Sonata is based on the motif of silence alone.The programme carries strong biographical links to the complicatedworld of Liszt. In Switzerland, where Liszt and his lover Maried’Agoult fled after the scandal of their affair hit Paris, we will visitLake Walensee, part of his first Années de pèlerinage collection.Another work, the Héxameron Variations was initiated by Liszt as acollaborative composition with the leading composer-performers ofthe day to create a work of dazzling genius. As his affair with Maried’Agoult ended, Liszt was the greatest piano virtuoso in Europe.Liszt travelled extensively and, by 1842, a veritable ‘Lisztomania’swept Europe as adoring fans flooded his concerts, fought over hishandkerchiefs and gloves, and seemed to come out of concerts ina state of nearly mystical ecstasy. His own compositions broke newgrounds, particularly, the Piano Sonata in B minor. It was a radicalcontribution to the sonata form and has been open to interpretationsince the day it was composed – it is one of the rare works by Lisztthat doesn’t carry a title. He doesn’t tell us if he’s visiting a lake, orhearing a Polish dance, or an Italian opera: it’s called merely Sonata.The image of Liszt will not be completed without Nuages Gris (GreyClouds), an iconic work characterized by a free approach to tonalitythat opened the way to modern music. Join us in our music salonfor a trip through the life of one of the nineteenth century’s greatestcomposers, visiting his music, and seeing his influences on the futureof composition and performance.The Liszt Salon will take place at RTHK’s Studio One. COLUMNS 專 欄CODAA distant land, a bosom friendTina Ma有 朋 自 遠 方 來 馬盈 盈In early autumn, I received a note from British composer Bill Connor,saying that he would come to Southeast Asia in October and he hopeto see me in Hong Kong. What I thought was: finally he’s here!Bill has written several sets of his beloved Christmas Medley for us,which has never failed to bring the spirit in Radio 4’s Christmas Concertin the Park to its height. As the project producer, I frequently writeto him to discuss the content and musical style of the new medley.Sometimes, apart from discussing his arrangement work, we divergeinto other kinds of news: cold wind is shrieking across the whitecappedsea outside his house, a rarely-seen red squirrel appearedin the field, the dog hasn’t spoken to him after an argument… Bill’sfriendly tone almost makes me forget the fact that we have neveractually met.The robust man with a big smile on his face is Bill, and he’s a reallynice and interesting person to talk with. We planned to have dinnerin a Cantonese restaurant nearby, but he could not wait to show methe 2011 Christmas Medley he’s working on . This year’s concert willbe built around some of the most popular music by Mozart. Bill’scomposition is also written in a Mozartian flavour – sweet and livelyChristmas songs come out one by one, then a theme from Mozart’sconcerto slips in and later a tune from a Mozart opera pops up.
