He was born in theparish of Glenluce. A portion of his early life was spent in the West Indies, where, by means of industryand good conduct, he earned a competency. For the last forty years, during which he resided in Stranraer,he was a useful and much respected member of the community. Strictly honest and honourable in all histransactions, punctual in the discharge of duty, and truly without guile, his loss will be much felt inStranraer.At St. John Street, Stranraer, on the 5th inst., aged 82 years, Helen Whitehead, relict of Mr A. Black.At Ardrie, near South Cairn, parish of Kirkcolm, on the 5th instant, Janet Galleard, aged 78 years. She was the eldest daughter of thecelebrated Admiral Lord Duncan and sister of the Earl of Camperdown. In her youth she was reckonedone of the most beautiful women of the day, and attracted much admiration on the remarkable occasionwhen, hanging on the arm of her veteran and gallant father, she appeared in the Royal procession whichwent to St. Paul's after the battle of Camperdown to give thanks for the great naval victories. Sheafterwards married Sir Hew Dalrymple Hamilton, of Bargeny and North Berwick, in Scotland. The late peer wasfor a short time in the House of Commons, being returned from the eastern division of the county ofCornwall in July 1841: but his father dying in December the same year, he succeeded to the earldom. He issucceeded as Viscount Falmouth by his uncle, the Hon. and Rev. John Evelyn Bonscawen, Prebendary ofCanterbury, who will inherit the large family estates in Cornwall.
