CONSTRUCTION FEATURES AND TERMINOLOGYCONSTRUCTION FEATURES AND TERMINOLOGY1 RIBSInsulator ribs provide added protection against spark or secondary voltage“flashover” and improve grip of rubber spark plug boot.2 INSULATORAluminum oxide ceramic with excellent dielectric strength, high mechanicalstrength, high thermal conductivity and excellent resistance to heat shock.Insulator is molded dry under extreme pressure, then kiln-fired to vitrification at atemperature exceeding the melting point of steel. The final insulator is dense, uniform and held to exacting tolerances.3 DECORATIONIdentifies brand name and spark plug type.4 HEXAGONUsually termed “hex.” Provides a contact for the socket wrench for removal andinstallation. Hex size is industry standard and is generally related to thread size.5 SHELLSteel shell is fabricated to exact tolerances by a cold-extrusion process. Sometypes use process bar stock.6 PLATED SHELL FINISHProvides added protection against rusting and corrosion. Improves appearance.7 ATTACHED GASKETFolded steel design simplifies installation and removal of plugs and maybe reused. The gasket seat provides a smooth surface against which thegasket seals.8 TAPER SEAT SHELLProvides close tolerance installation in cylinder heads that are designed for thisstyle of spark plug.9 PRECISION ROLLED THREADSConform to the specifications established by the SAE and the InternationalStandards Organization.10 REACHThe length of the shell thread area, which engages the engine cylinder headthreads. There are various “reaches” adopted as industry standards.11 THREAD DIAMETERMost common threads are metric. There are various sizes established asindustry standards. They are tailored to fit all domestic and overseas engines.A THREADED POSTWith removable terminal that has same configuration as solid terminal.Threaded post required for special spark plug cable connectors.B SOLID TERMINALFormed by a cold extrusion manufacturing process.C CEMENTApplied with automatic injection equipment. Solid terminal or threaded post istightened to specified torque. Cement is cured, providing a permanentgas-tight assembly.D RESISTOR SUPPRESSORCapsule element reduces electromagnetic Interference (EMI) inrecommended installations.E SPRINGUsed with resistor or suppressor to assure firm contact with terminalor center electrode.F INDUCTIVE SUPPRESSORHigh inductive reactance reduces EMI. Designed for use with certain fast riseCDI systems where resistance must be low.G SILLMENT SEALSCompacted powder seals formed under high pressure. Provide permanentassembly and eliminate troublesome leakage under all operating conditionsthroughout service life of the plug. Impervious to heat, oxidation or corrosion.H INSIDE GASKETProvides a “cushion seal” and good thermal contact between the insulator andshell. Some spark plug types have specially designed shells eliminating theinside gasket.I WIDE BASE INSULATORMore ceramic material provides a wider, easier path for heat dissipation. Allowsa longer insulator nose, which tolerates more residual deposits before fouling.J FINE WIRE ELECTRODESpecial alloys provide design features for easier starts and reduced fouling.K COPPER-CORED CENTER ELECTRODEPure copper encapsulated in nickel alloy transfers combustion heat rapidlyaway between firings. Results in spark plug designs with longer insulatornoses to combat fouling.8 7 616 1514 13EXTERNAL FEATURES512 11 10 94 312 EXTENDED GAPPositions the electrode gap for improved combustion in those engines thatrequire this spark plug type.13 PROJECTED INSULATOR NOSEPermits hotter operation at low speeds to resist fouling. Charge cooled at highspeeds to reduce temperature and electrode erosion.14 GROUND ELECTRODEFabricated from nickel alloys. The materials are developed to resist bothsparking erosion and chemical corrosion under normal and extreme operatingtemperature conditions. Rectangular cross section is utilized to provideincreased gap life.15 CENTER ELECTRODEFabricated from alloys. Designed to resist both sparking erosion and chemicalcorrosion under normal and extreme operation temperature conditions.16 ELECTRODE GAPAlso called “spark gap.” Precision set at the factory to meet the requirements formost engines.AGJCILINTERNAL FEATURESDKL FIRING END CEMENTCompound between the center electrode and the insulator nose may berequired for some spark plug designs. This special compound facilitates quicktransfer of heat through and away from the plug-firing end.M CLOSE CLEARANCE CENTER ELECTRODEThe use of tight tolerances for the electrode and insulator bore diameters canresult in close clearances between the insulator and electrode. These designsare used to facilitate quick transfer of heat away from the spark plug firing end.N SURFACE GAPArc occurs between center electrode and shell, across insulator surface.Used only with special CDI systems.O TUNGSTEN ALLOY ELECTRODEUsed for some surface gap type spark plugs.AEHM2BEN1CFO4

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A SPARK PLUG?A spark plug performs three main functions:1. Provides a spark to initiate the combustion process2. Removes heat from the combustion chamber3. Acts as a dielectric insulator for the ignition systemWHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A PLATINUM SPARK PLUG?Platinum plugs provide:1. Longer life2. Improved fuel efficiency3. Quicker startsWHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CHECK SPARK PLUGS?When interpreted correctly, spark plugs are valuable tuning tools. The appearance of a spark plug’s firing endreflects the suitability of the spark plug as well as the engine. By evaluating the plugs’ visual cues, you can accuratelydetermine the engine’s overall operating condition, get a feel for air/fuel ratios, and even diagnose driveabilityproblems. Worn spark plugs require higher voltages to produce a spark, causing a greater rate of misfires, orincomplete combustion cycles. Each misfire means lost horsepower, reduced fuel economy and higher emissions.WHAT DOES THE TERM “HEAT RATING” MEAN?The term “heat rating” refers to the relative temperature of the spark plug’s core nose. The terms actually referto the plug’s ability to dissipate heat from its firing end into the engine cooling system.A hot spark plug has a long insulator nose, which exposes more surface area to the combustion gases anddissipates heat slowly, quickly heating up the firing end. It is used in an engine routinely kept at low speeds.A cold spark plug has a shorter insulator nose, which minimizes surface exposure to the combustion gasesand dissipates heat quickly, slowly heating up the firing end. It is used in an engine routinely kept at high speeds.WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE HEAT RATING IS TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW?If the heat rating is too high, the spark plug temperature remains too low and causes deposits to build upon the firing end. These deposits can cause an electrical leakage path that gives rise to the loss of spark plugs. If the heat rating is too low, the spark plug temperature rises too high and induces abnormal combustion(pre-ignition), that leads to the melting of the spark plug electrodes as well as piston seizure and erosion.FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSHOW DO I KNOW IF A SPARK PLUG IS FAILED OR WORN OUT?Refer to the chart on the inside back cover of this catalog to find out if a spark plug is failed or worn out.HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REPLACE SPARK PLUGS?Refer to the mileage intervals listed in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.WHAT DO I LOOK FOR WHEN REPLACING A SPARK PLUG?1. Select the shell type based on thread diameter, length and seat type required by the cylinder head.2. Select a gap style to maximize performance based on your operating environment. The more the sparkgap is exposed to the air/fuel mixture, the easier it is to initiate combustion. This translates into improvedthrottle response and more efficiency.3. Select a heat range that corresponds with the required shell and gap style. When it comes time to replace a spark plug, choose Mopar – the original equipment plug usedin Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and Jeep vehicles.5

Allowing the engine amplecooldown time will facilitate plugremoval. The use of penetrating oilis also recommended if the plugappears to be tight. Apply steadypressure with a plug wrench untilthe plug loosens. Before removingthe plug, blow any dirt from theport area that might be presentto prevent it from falling into thecombustion chamber. If the plugappears to be overly tight whenremoved by hand, it may be dueto carbon collection in the threadedarea of the cylinder head. Thiscondition is common in olderengines. The threads should becleaned with a chaser tool, and theseat wiped clear to assure goodseat contact before installing anew plug. BYANALYZING THECOLOR, GAP ANDDEPOSITS FOUND ONNORMAL WORN OUT INSULATOR GLAZINGSYMPTOMS A grayish tan to white colorindicates the correct heat range spark plugis in use, the fuel and ignition systems arein good shape and overall engine mechanicalcondition is good.RECOMMENDATIONS Replace with spark plugsof the same heat range.SYMPTOMS Worn or rounded center and/orground electrodes indicate excessive wearand can cause hard starting, reduced fueleconomy and misfire during acceleration. This can also damage other secondaryignition components such as spark plugwires, coils and the distributor cap.RECOMMENDATIONS Replace with spark plugsof the same heat range and design.SYMPTOMS Shiny tan or yellow depositssuggest that temperatures have suddenlyincreased under severe loads. Excessive hightemperatures can result in the glazing of thespark plug insulator by allowing fuel andcombustion chamber deposits to melt ratherthan burn off in a normal manner.RECOMMENDATIONS Replace with spark plugsof the correct heat range.THE FIRING END OFTHE PLUG, YOU CANDETERMINE THEOVERALL “HEALTH”OIL FOULEDMECHANICAL DAMAGEOVERHEATEDOF AN ENGINE ANDDIAGNOSE ITSPROBLEMS. CHECKSPARK PLUGSSYMPTOMS Black oily coating can be causedby poor oil control. This usually representsadvanced engine wear and results in acomplete cylinder misfire condition.RECOMMENDATIONS Check for worn valveguides, valve stem seals and piston rings. In some engines, a defective PCV valve cancontribute to this condition.SYMPTOMS Bent and/or broken electrodes andcore nose indicate mechanical damage causedby a foreign object in the combustion chamberor improper reach spark plugs.RECOMMENDATIONS Remove the foreign objectfrom the engine. Check the Mopar Spark Plugscatalog for proper spark plug application andreplace as specified.SYMPTOMS Chalky white insulator with littleor no coloration and extensive electrode wearwhich is possibly blistered or pitted. The shellmay also be discolored from light grayto a dark blue, almost black.RECOMMENDATIONS Verify ignition timing andfuel systems are within specifications and thatcooling and emissions are working properly.Check for correct heat range spark plugs.REGULARLY ANDFOLLOW THEMILEAGE INTERVALSLISTED IN THEOWNER’S MANUAL.ASH DEPOSITSSYMPTOMS Light brown deposits encrustedon the ground and/or center electrodes. Thissituation is caused by oil and/or fuel additives.RECOMMENDATIONS When the deposits arefound on only one side of the spark plug corenose, check the cylinder head (valve stem sealsor valve guides). When they are found on bothsides of the spark plug, check the piston rings. The spark plug is the correct heat range andwas a victim of the engine’s condition, not thecause of it.PRE-IGNITIONSYMPTOMS Spark plug shows signs of beinghot or blistered, and/or has melted center andground electrodes.RECOMMENDATIONS Make sure coolingsystem, spark advance and fuel mixtures areto specifications. Special attention should begiven to the EGR and knock sensor systems.Mis-routing spark plug wires can also lead tocross induction and preignition. Identify causeof preignition and check engine mechanicalcondition before replacing plugs.CARBON FOULEDSYMPTOMS Soft, black, sooty, dry-lookingdeposits indicate a rich air fuel mixture, weakignition or wrong heat range spark plug (toocold). This will result in engine misfire.RECOMMENDATIONS Check for correct plug heatrange. On fuel injected engines, check forsticking injectors, malfunctioning cold startvalves and/or circuits, and for correct fuelpressure. On computer controlled vehicles, the“limp home” computer mode will always resultin a rich condition. It is imperative that youcheck the operation and condition of theon-board computer system. On carburetedvehicles, check choke and choke pulloff, highfloat level and needle and seat condition.Use only MoparSpark Plugs, theoriginal sparkplug used inChrysler, Dodgeand Jeep® vehicles.DETONATIONSYMPTOMS Small black or gray spots will benoticed on the core nose of the spark plug.In cases of severe detonation, insulators maybe cracked and/or chipped.RECOMMENDATIONS Make sure recommendedoctane fuel is being used. Assure properoperation of cooling, emission and computersystems with special attention to EGR and knocksensor systems. Identify cause of detonation andrepair check engine mechanical condition beforereplacing plugs.FUEL ADDITIVESSYMPTOMS Red to purple deposits on oneside of the core nose are an indication of afuel additive. While many of the deposits arenon-conductive and do not contribute to lackof performance, some fuel additives containoctane boosters that leave conductivedeposits on the core nose.RECOMMENDATIONS Care should be takento assure that any fuel additives used arecompatible with engine manufacturer’srecommendations.
