Named after Mr Janardan Rao's mother, the VelamatiSoubhagyavathammaBuilding will house the newpatient care center as wellas a state-of-the-artoperating theatre complex.Along with Mr JanardanRao, who is the majordonor for the project, hisdaughter Ms Uma Devi,Dr Gullapalli N Rao (Chair,LVPEI), Dr G ChandraSekhar (Director,Hyderabad campus),Dr D Balasubramanian(Director – Research) andothers were present at theoccasion on June 20, 2011.Excellence Equity EfficiencyMr VC Janardan Rao with Dr Gullapalli N Raoand Ms Uma DeviLVPEI's City Centre at Siripuram, attachedto the GMR Varalakshmi campus atVisakhapatnam was formally inaugurated byDr D Purandareswari, MP on June 11, 2011.The program was attended by local donors,well-wishers and members of the press.Mr O Naresh, Head, Symbiosis Technologies,one of LVPEI Vizag's first donors, withDr Gullapalli N Rao, Chair, LVPEI and Mr Varun,son of Mr Prabhu Kishore of Varun MotorsAWARDS AND HONORSDr G Chandra Sekhar, Director, LVPEI, Hyderabadcampus received the "Vivekanand Award" fromVivekanand Netralaya, which is presented to stalwarts inthe field of ophthalmology to acknowledge theiroutstanding work. The award was presented to him onJune 11, 2011 at Miraj.Dr Subhabrata Chakrabarti has been awarded theWGA Research Award for 2010 in basic sciences. Thisis the highest award of the World Glaucoma Association,given for a body of research work done in clinical andbasic sciences in glaucoma over a period of time alongwith evidence of significant publications and honors.He has also been selected to serve on the ARVO AnnualMeeting Future Site Selection Working Group.F1000: The article “Intracameral perfluoropropane gasin the treatment of acute corneal hydrops” by S Basu,PK Vaddavalli, SI Murthy, VS Sangwan (Ophthalmology2011 May) was selected and evaluated by Shahzad Mian,a Member of the Faculty of 1000 (F1000), which placesthe work in the journal's library of the top 2% ofpublished articles in biology and medicine. The serviceis widely used to find significant new research articles,and the inclusion of the article significantly increases itsvisibility.ARVO International Travel Grants for the 2011ARVO Annual Meeting held at Fort Lauderdale, Floridaduring May 1 to 5, 2011 have been awarded toDr Indumathi Mariappan, Dr Ashik Mohamed andMr Pesala Veerendranath.Global Academy of Eye CareEducation for Vizag campusOur major donor, Mr Krishna Pathak from Dubai issupporting the creation of a "Global Academy of EyeCare Education" with a "Centre for Eye care Education'at LVPEI's GMR Varalakshmi campus at Vizag. Ophthalmology fellows’ graduationThe ophthalmology fellows’ graduation ceremony was celebrated on June30, 2011, with the first batch of comprehensive ophthalmology fellows fromGMR Varalakshmi campus, Visakhapatnam, and the first batch of Diplomateof the National Board (DNB) residents from Kallam Anji Reddy campusgraduating. The celebrations began with an address by ChairmanDr Gullapalli N Rao, followed by an interesting video presentation on theachievements and nostalgic memories of the outgoing fellows. The dayended with a dinnerand dance partyhosted by theEducation Centre.Surgical services at KVC campusL V Prasad Eye Institute'sKode Venkatadri Chowdarycampus at Tadigadapa,Vijayawada launched itsSurgical Services on June 20,2011. Dr Niranjan Pehereperformed the first cataractsurgery, followed by anotherone by Dr Sujata Das fromBhubaneswar campus.
