The end and <strong>the</strong> means were alwaysopenly announced and publicly avowed. As apreacher, Dr. <strong>Janeway</strong> was instructive, earnest, andfaithful. As a pastor, he was indefatigable in hisattention to <strong>the</strong> young, <strong>the</strong> sick, <strong>the</strong> afflicted and <strong>the</strong>inquiring. His zeal <strong>for</strong> sound doctrine was one of<strong>the</strong> most prominent traits of his character, and hadmuch to do in determining <strong>the</strong> whole course of hislife. His zeal was not unenlightened bigotry, butarose from <strong>the</strong> clear perception of <strong>the</strong> importance oftruth to holiness. He was satisfied that <strong>the</strong> salvationof men and <strong>the</strong> glory of God were dependent on <strong>the</strong>preservation of <strong>the</strong> gospel in its purity. He was<strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e always on <strong>the</strong> alert, always among <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>emostin opposing every <strong>for</strong>m of error. For thisfidelity he is to be had in grateful remembrance. Amore consistent man is not to be found in our longcatalogueof ministers. Consistent not only in <strong>the</strong>sense of being constant in his opinions, but in <strong>the</strong>correspondence of his deportment with his professionsand with his social position and official station.There was nothing worldly in his spirit, or ostentatiousin his mode of living. He was an exemplaryChristian gentleman. God preserved him from thosecancers of <strong>the</strong> soul, covetousness and avarice, whichoften eat out <strong>the</strong> life even of men professing godliness.He was a large and generous giver.
