2. Chairman’s Report<br />

2.1 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permanent Secretary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tourism and Sports -<br />

Bert stated that it is important for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter to be included in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mailing list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ministry for all future meetings.<br />

Khun Phornsiri <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered to organise a meeting with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permanent Secretary over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next<br />

few weeks. Khun Danai and M.L. Hathaijanok will prepare <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Agenda for this meeting.<br />

Danai informed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting that he met Khun Attachai Burakamkovit, Permanent Secretary,<br />

Ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tourism and Sports, and informed him that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter would like to<br />

meet with him.<br />

2.2 Bert thanked Ken for all his work during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recent political situati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

2.3 PATA Thailand Chapter Facebook – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA Secretariat will follow up <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ExCom<br />

members to register <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter Facebook.<br />

2.4 Visit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA Vietnam Chapter – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting decided not to proceed with this<br />

programme.<br />

2.5 Travel Associati<strong>on</strong>s – The Industry Relati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> will work out a plan to work<br />

with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 60 travel associati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

2.6 Budget – <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Budget will be prepared as so<strong>on</strong> as we have received <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> SMART Plan<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Membership <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

3. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reports<br />

Educati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> -<br />

TAT 50 th Anniversary Celebrati<strong>on</strong> C<strong>on</strong>ference <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g> – “The Role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Digital Marketing as<br />

Tourism Revenue Generator” – Bert will restart <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> planning for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> above seminar with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fice <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> TAT Governor.<br />

Membership <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> -<br />

Duncan reported in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> absence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Danny that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y had met and discussed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> declining<br />

membership <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter. Limited finances <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our members will effect our<br />

membership at this time. Therefore, it was proposed that we maintain our membership fees.<br />

However, in future <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Membership <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> will target organizati<strong>on</strong>s such as AOT, King<br />

Power Duty Free, Gems Gallery, to invite <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to join <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter as well as to be<br />

sp<strong>on</strong>sors. Ben stated that this will be in line with PATA HQ who are recruiting<br />

organizati<strong>on</strong>s to be sp<strong>on</strong>sors.<br />

Khun Phornsiri suggested that we should <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fer educati<strong>on</strong>al instituti<strong>on</strong>s a reduced<br />

membership fees as many instituti<strong>on</strong>s have made this suggesti<strong>on</strong> to her. The Membership<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> will review this.<br />

Jim inquired how PATA HQ plans to address <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greatly reduced number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />

memberships and he stated his c<strong>on</strong>cern <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> loss <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 60% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> membership over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> past<br />

few years. Ben informed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting that Rent<strong>on</strong> de Alwis will be rejoining PATA HQ for<br />

a few m<strong>on</strong>ths in mid-July in order to assist in this matter. PATA HQ will also work <strong>on</strong><br />

streng<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chapters and twinning <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chapter will be part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plan.<br />

Danai suggested that PATA HQ should review <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cost <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir member fees if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y are<br />

loosing members.<br />

Bert stated that members are now asking what <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y get for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir membership and this is a<br />

major problem being faced by all travel associati<strong>on</strong>s worldwide. The Thailand Chapter will<br />

also have to start to work <strong>on</strong> how we can improve our Chapter.<br />

Khun Phornsiri suggested that since we have members from throughout Thailand we should<br />

get members to form <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own satellite chapters.<br />

Membership Applicati<strong>on</strong>s –<br />

Inbound Marketing <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> –<br />

Jim reported that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> April Quarterly Lunche<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g> was cancelled due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> political<br />

situati<strong>on</strong>. He asked <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting for suggesti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> new lunche<strong>on</strong>/event venues in order to<br />

attract our members. Jim also stated his c<strong>on</strong>cern that as all our members will be<br />

experiencing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own crisis that lunches may not be appropriate at this time. The<br />

following suggesti<strong>on</strong>s were submitted –<br />

1. An interactive Evening event with reference to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> standing lunches/mini networking<br />

cocktail functi<strong>on</strong>s being organized by SKAL Bangkok which are quite successful.<br />

2. Late afterno<strong>on</strong>/early evening shorter, more focused programmes/evening talks.<br />

3. To organise lunch meetings if we have a special programme which is value-added for our<br />

members.<br />

The following were proposed –<br />

1. To check if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a functi<strong>on</strong> room at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Siam Ocean World Aquarium<br />

2. Evening functi<strong>on</strong> at about 1730 hrs. with a Panel Discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

3. To join up with Travel Daily Asia which organizes lunch sessi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Jim inquired if a survey has been d<strong>on</strong>e to inbound and outbound travelers? Bert stated that<br />

he will c<strong>on</strong>tact Dr. Kom Campiran<strong>on</strong> at Thurakij Bundit University who is doing a survey<br />

with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir students <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> both political events in 2009 and 2010.<br />

Jim informed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting that both he and Luzi serve <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Joint Foreign Chambers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Commerce and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y will have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir first meeting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year next week. The meeting<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firmed that Luzi will be appointed as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficial representative <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter.<br />

The meeting requested Jim to organise a Panel discussi<strong>on</strong> to discuss <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recent circular sent<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PAA ExCom with reference to reducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> room rates by ROH following by<br />

comments made <strong>on</strong> this matter by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> travel media as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> travel industry.<br />

Outbound Marketing <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> –<br />

Bert informed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting that we have checked with all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> travel agent members and n<strong>on</strong>e<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m can represent outbound travel agents. It is very important that we have outbound<br />

travel agent members in order that we can organise twinning with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Chapters. Khun<br />

Phornsiri suggested that we call this “Chapter Relati<strong>on</strong>s” instead <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>centrating <strong>on</strong><br />

outbound travel agents. However, Bert stated that we would like to have outbound travel<br />

agents as members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter. Danai <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered to invite some outbound travel<br />

agents to be our members.<br />

Bert suggested that we should invite some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> major travel industry associati<strong>on</strong>s to serve<br />

as Advisors <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Executive</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g>. He also proposed that we should not require <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

Advisors to be members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter.<br />

Public Relati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> –<br />

Ken informed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting that he will issue <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> members and product newsletters next week.<br />

Merritt Gurley, PATA Interactive Marketing who prepared a clip <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cleanup <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Bangkok would like to do a clip <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter. The meeting requested<br />

Ken to draft and outline and to coordinate this interview.<br />

PATA Finland Chapter – Bert circulated an introducti<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Finland Chapter and<br />

suggested that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> P.R. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> should review this to improve <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> introducti<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Thailand Chapter in our website. Khun Phornsiri requested we prepare this improved<br />

introducti<strong>on</strong> as she has received many requests from potential members.<br />

Industry Relati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> –<br />

Danai reported <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting <strong>on</strong> “Tourism Development for 2011-2015” he attended at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Ministry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tourism and Sports. Bert requested that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Industry Relati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

should submit a request from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thailand Chapter that in order for foreign senior<br />

management to be able to attend <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se very important meetings that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se meetings should be<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>held</str<strong>on</strong>g> in English. Khun Phornsiri suggested that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se meetings are very important meetings<br />

so we should request that at least <strong>on</strong>e meeting a m<strong>on</strong>th should be <str<strong>on</strong>g>held</str<strong>on</strong>g> in English for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

foreign senior management.<br />

Danai will attend <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> “Focus <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g>” to be organized by TAT and chaired by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Governor<br />

<strong>on</strong> June 17 th . Bert will provide him with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ideas ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>red from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> brainstorming sessi<strong>on</strong><br />

Bert informed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting that Blair’s team has been very supportive and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA Website<br />

is up-to-date.<br />

Financial Report for March-June, 2010 –<br />

Khun Kusa submitted <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Financial Report for March-June, 2010, which was approved by<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meeting.<br />

Outstanding Memberships for 2010 – The meeting requested <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Membership <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g> to<br />

follow up <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 22 members with outstanding membership fees for 2010.<br />

The meeting requested that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> layout <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>thly accounts should be in Excel columns<br />

which make it easier to read. Bert <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered to prepare a sample <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new layout for fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>, before making any changes to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> traditi<strong>on</strong>al way <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> final<br />

overviews<br />

An animated debate followed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA chapters in general, and specifically<br />

in Thailand, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> merits <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> advocacy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sensitive issues, like marketing over price.<br />

It is clear that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chapter can’t tell our members how to run <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir business, but pointing out<br />

advantages and disadvantages <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> certain acti<strong>on</strong>s, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential reacti<strong>on</strong>s, should be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sidered as giving <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> members added value in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> form <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> “ food for thought “<br />

As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> majority <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ExCom members present agreed with this approach, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chair will<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinue this approach, but as last time, will c<strong>on</strong>sult all ExCom members <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chair Chatter and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> issue to be addressed.<br />

PATA HQ Matters –<br />

Ben announced that PATA has launched an <strong>on</strong>line feature which allows members to create<br />

and upload <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir membership pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ile. This will allow <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> members to manage and maintain<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir corporate account, thus ensuring that informati<strong>on</strong> displayed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA Website is<br />

current and relevant. Ben will work with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA Secretariat <strong>on</strong> this matter.<br />

Khun Phornsiri reported that at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA AGM in Kuching, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a lot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bylaws <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> PATA <str<strong>on</strong>g>Executive</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g>. It is planned to send <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Business Plan<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> CEO Update Report to all members.<br />

4. Secretariat Matters<br />

The MOU <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Secretariat will amended <strong>on</strong>ce again for signature at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ExCom <str<strong>on</strong>g>Meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g> in<br />

July.<br />
