Research Highlights in <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Education</strong>…From AcademiaShaw Hosts Student Research SymposiumMarch 14, <strong>2013</strong> - Shaw University hosted the Second Annual StudentResearch Symposium during the Spring Semester. The symposiumshowcased ongoing undergraduate and graduate research from studentsenrolled at Shaw, St. Augustine’s and North Carolina State Universities.Topics presented included analyzing the health behaviors of Jamaicanprostate cancer patients; genetically trans<strong>for</strong>ming the stevia plant <strong>for</strong> massproduction; and analyzing the effects of microgravity on the skeletal system.The symposium provided an opportunity <strong>for</strong> Shaw students, faculty and staffto learn about research being conducted on campus and at neighboringuniversities; to exchange ideas with fellow faculty and students; and tonetwork. Shaw students from the Natural Sciences and Mathematics, <strong>Education</strong> andMass Communications departments presented their research and internshipexperiences. The day included both oral and poster presentations.Shaw students initiated the idea <strong>for</strong> the symposium. They had participated in the National Institutes of<strong>Health</strong> Minority Disparities (NIHMD)-funded “Shaw in Jamaica” internship and wanted a mediumthrough which they could showcase their research. The first Shaw University Research Symposium washeld in the spring of 2012. This year, the number of student presenters <strong>for</strong> the symposium increasedfrom five oral presentations to 20 oral and poster presentations. A variety of academic fields wererepresented, including biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, early childhood education, engineeringand mathematics.The symposium concluded with remarks from Dr. Tashni-Ann Dubroy, Chair of the Natural Sciencesand Mathematics Department and Dr. Moses Goldmon, Interim Director of the Institute <strong>for</strong> <strong>Health</strong>,Social, and Community <strong>Health</strong>.
