From the Executive Principal
D ear Parents,
We are currently looking forward to the rest of year and taking stock of what has gone very well,
and what needs improvement in the new school year.
Our bus situation for ASA students is one area that we do need to address after the first week
as some students have arrived home late. This situation will be remedied and we will be adding
extra resource over the weekend.
We are also looking at the deployment of TA’s within the school and will of course always make
sure that they are deployed in the best way for the benefit of students.
On the positive side of course we have had a great deal of positive feedback on the sports
programmes and the work that the students are taking part in through the school.
The schools community activities has been incredible successful with Roundabout having their
most successful book fayre ever. Chatterbox has reported a great start and all the Pastries with
Parents events have been a pleasure to attend.
No school is perfect, but we will make sure that ours comes as close as possible.
Have a great weekend.
SANLITUN
From the Vice Principal
Dear All,
Mahatma Gandhi once said “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. Nothing could
be closer to the ethos of this school, where putting others first is at the heart of what we do. Sometimes it is the small
things that count the most; students holding a door open for their peers or greeting the ayis and thanking them for
cleaning the floors. These little acts are what makes our community special and a place families want to be.
This week I would like to thank the Parents’ Association for organizing a wonderful barbeque last Saturday. This
involved a huge amount of work but did much to cement new friendships for new families and to provide children
with a magical evening. I know that my own children were reluctant to leave the long line of bouncy castles which
were ably supervised by our fantastic Teaching Assistants.
The theme of service has run through the secondary school in two ways this week. First of all, the Prefects have been
appointed from the Sixth Form; we will be expecting a lot from them in terms of their contribution to the School.
Secondly, the first International Award expedition is taking place this weekend at Silver Pagodas. Fundamental to the
ethos of the International Award (linked to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in the UK) is developing oneself
through serving others and, as any teacher will tell you, the best way to learn something yourself is to show another
person how to do it!
The motto of Nord Anglia Education is ‘Helping others to be the best they can be’. We at BSB are proud to embody
that ethos in all that we do.
Have a successful and fulfilling week.
Yours,
Latin and Ancient Greek
Latin GCSE
This is a chance to learn Latin to GCSE standard and sit the examination. It is open to anyone in any secondary year
group. Some students have been asking to do Latin, but their year group is not on my timetable, so this is the chance
to get a classical education. There will be two lessons per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room B406 during
ASA time. See Mr. Pryer if you are interested.
Ancient Greek GCSE
Here is an opportunity to learn Ancient Greek to GCSE standard and sit the examination. It is open to anyone in the
secondary school . There is probably no other school in China offering this subject, so if you really want to complete
your classical education, here is your big chance! There will be one lesson per week on Wednesdays in room B406
during ASA time. See Mr. Pryer if you are interested.
From the Head of Secondary
Thank you to all parents that supported the Parents Association Barbeque, it was a lovely event and would not have
SANLITUN SANLITUN
Sanlitun Primary
From the Headteacher, Sanlitun
Dear Parents,
We have had yet another busy week this week with quite a heavy focus on food. On Tuesday we had a fantastic turn
out for our first ‘Pastries with Parents’ event of the academic year, and even though the rain did threaten to dampen
our pain au chocolat, we quickly moved indoors to continue our morning refreshments. It was wonderful to see so
many of our parents join their children for breakfast and have yet another opportunity to chat and mingle with other
families as well as members of staff.
Yesterday we were extremely lucky to have our very own live cooking show ‘On your marks, get set, cook!’ Two teams
of pupils battled it out on stage to cook their very own balanced meal which I was then incredibly lucky to taste.
Chef Darren Tickler, from the UK, hosted the contest before our KS1 and KS2 pupils who were able to answer lots
of questions about different food groups and healthy eating. The children also took part in judging the best dish by
displaying either a green card for the green team or red card for the red team. Whilst I had chosen the very tasty ‘flashfried
meatballs’ by Mr Breaden’s red team as my favourite dish, the winner, chosen by the KS1 and KS2 pupils, was Miss
Watt’s green team who cooked oriental salmon fish cakes. It was a fantastic way to start our day and we hope to be able
to display the recipes used in the show in case you would like to try them out at home.
Continuing the food topic, we look forward to welcoming new and returning Sanlitun families to our Family Fish and
Chip night this evening. We would like to remind families that the event starts at 5pm and finishes at 8pm. Please do
not forget to bring your ticket which will enable you to get a serving of fish and chips.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Foundation Stage, Sanlitun
Yummy food
This week in Pre-Nursery and Nursery
This week, in Pre-Nursery we have been busy exploring farms, the animals that live on them and the noises they make.
We have also been practicing a lot of farm related songs such as ‘Old Macdonald’ and ‘Baa baa black sheep’. What a
noisy week!
Many of us have started to eat and sleep at school. Everyone is adapting to the extended routine beautifully and
enjoying the yummy food!
It has been the final week, in Nursery, of our topic Áll About Me’. The children have been talking about feelings and
what makes them happy and what makes them sad. Thankfully all the children said that they felt happy because they
were in school playing with their friends!
SANLITUN
Foundation Stage, Sanlitun
Monster mad!
This week in Reception
We’ve been going monster mad in Reception! We have been reading ‘The Grufallo’ and doing all sorts of learning
around the story. We loved role playing in the woods and acting out the parts of the different woodland animals
avoiding being The Gruffalo’s dinner! We’ve also made our own monsters out of junk and given them names and
special powers.
EAL, Sanlitun
Full swing
The EAL children in San Li Tun have been very busy this week and are in the full swing of coming to EAL classes.
Year 1 and Year 2 have been learning about school subjects, places around the school and describing their school
routine. They are also learning how to express their immediate needs, how to tell their teachers when they are hot,
cold, tired or thirsty for example.
Some of Year 3 have been practising phonics and sentence construction and other groups have been talking about
school routines.Year 4 were writing fictional stories this week about pirates and acting the stories out as were Year 6,
they had great fun! Year 5 have also been talking about school and expressing their likes and dislikes. Year 5 and 6 are
all doing well on their reading plan and we all ove discussing their books. Keep working hard children!!
Key Stage One, Sanlitun
The Big Red Bath
This week in Year One
This week Year One started their Literacy unit on ‘Stories with familiar
settings’. We read the story of The Big Red Bath together and talked about
the setting and the characters. We looked out for language that repeats
itself and even did some role play of parts of the story using toys and
puppets. The children also wrote some describing words for how it feels
to be in a bubbly bath.
On Tuesday it was Miss Darke’s birthday and as a special surprise we were
able to make our own birthday cookies. Not only were they beautifully
decorated but they also tasted delicious!
As part of our Marvellous Me topic, the children talked about their
favourite colours this week. On Wednesday all the children came in
wearing their favourite colour. We then made a giant pictogram with the
children in the playground. The results looked absolutely amazing! The
children then used the pictogram to find out information about Year
One’s favourite colours.

Key Stage Two, Sanlitun
At the Water’s Edge
This week in Year Four
This morning Year 4 set out to explore the habitat of the Liangma canal. It was definitely our lucky day as not only
was the sun shining but we saw a record number of different species along the canal. Before we even arrived there we
had spotted three different types of butterfly, several sparrows and a magpie. Our excitement grew as we arrived at
the water’s edge to spot a breeding ground for pond skaters. We were also treated to a close up view of a spectacular
red dragon fly. We were struggling to keep up with drawing all the different plant and animal species on our sketch
maps, but we tried very hard to include the spiders, ants, green fly and fish. Before we left we spotted mushrooms and
a mysterious egg-like growth on the leaves of the willow trees. It has been a fabulous introduction to our topic on
habitats and we never expected to see such a variety of life right in the centre of Beijing.
Key Stage Two, Sanlitun
Robinson Crusoe
This week in Year s Five and Six
It has been another incredible week in year 5 and 6 at the Sanlitun campus.
In literacy year 5 students have continued to learn all about the adventures of Robinson Crusoe. We used drama
work and games to explore how Robinson might have felt being stranded on a deserted island. We then created a
map of what we thought Robinson’s island looks like based on all that we have read. We will use all of this to help us
as we start to write our own chapters of Robinson Crusoe.
In numeracy we began by looking at sequences of numbers and trying to identify any patterns. We learnt how to
work systematically and methodically to find patterns and work out the next steps. By the end of the week year 5
students discovered how to use written methods of addition and subtraction to answer questions with 3 or 4 digits.
In topic year 5 learnt all about healthy living and how that can have an effect on the lungs, heart and brain. We found
out what makes a balanced diet and why it is so important to eat right. Continuing with our brain waves theme the
children created a cartoon about what a neuron is and its functions.
Chinese, Sanlitun
Chinese
This week Sanlitun children had leant a lot of things in different Chinese classrooms.
In primary Year 1 Heritage group children learnt eight Chinese characters including人 口 目 木 禾 竹 马 鸟 with
images.
Year 3 children in Group B continue to learn about time. They reviewed the vocabulary about telling time. They
practiced to write time in Chinese and played games to practice the vocabulary as well.
Children in Year 6 learnt a new topic about travelling. They reviewed and learnt the transportations such as train,
truck, bike, car, bus, subway and so on. They also practiced the sentence pattern like ‘Beijing is far away from Shanghai.’
‘ I go to school by school bus.’
Reception children talked about family members. They learnt a rhyme about taking care of little brother and had been
told a story about a little mouse and his family.

Both last week and this week, pupils in KS1 & 2 at Sanlitun have been lucky enough to have part of their PE lessons
taken by Club Football. The coaches from CF have played fun games with the children and have been teaching them
all sorts of football skills to improve their technique.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Parents’ Association BBQ on Saturday. It was great to see so
many new and returning families and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The children all had a
wonderful time on the bouncy castles and having their faces painted. A huge thank you to all the members
of the Parents’ Association who helped organise this event, it was a great achievement.
A Visit to a Migrant School
On Monday 10th September Dawn Ross went with Helen Boyle, the Director and Founder of the Migrant
Children’s Foundation, to one of its schools in Fangshan. The purpose of the visit was to handover equipment
and materials bought with the money raised through bake sale, non uniform days and other fundraising
events held in the last academic year by the Primary Charity Committee.
On arrival at the school, we were greeted by many of the teachers and by some of the children there. They
were delighted to receive the sports equipment, football goals, basketball nets and badminton sets. As well
as this the money raised had paid for much needed stationery, paints and notebooks. The younger children
were given several boxes of foam building blocks as well as small wooden tables and chairs.
After all the goods were unloaded Mrs. Ross took a walk around the sparse but welcoming classrooms
and was greeted by smiley children having lessons there. We hope that strong ties can be forged between
the British School and the Migrant School’s Foundation, so that we can continue to help these children.

Coming to life!
Dear Parents,
Another extremely busy week has flown by here at BSB with the school truly coming to life in all areas. We have had
special events in year groups, events for the Parents and collaborative events involving the entire Primary school. The
week started with a lovely celebrations assembly for the Primary school. These are a new feature and bring all the
children together to celebrate their achievements. We gave out house-point certificates, announced uniform awards,
shared our stars of the week for each class. Please do send in any badges or cups achieved outside of school on a
Monday and we will celebrate all our children’s achievement together.
This week we were proud to introduce our new house captains for 2012-13. The house captains are;
Romans – Sophia Leow and Ben Robinson
Saxons – Ella Taylor and Luca Cabon
Vikings – Victor Melander and Julia Kobiolka
Normans – Seline Choi and Lucas Park
Very well done to those children, their peers voted for them above a great many others, I am sure they will serve their
houses well.
Tuesday saw a great turn out at pastries with parents for Key Stage one. It was fantastic to see so many faces, old and
new and we hope for an equally impressive turn out this week for the same event for the Parents of Years three and
four. Today there have been numerous events around the school. It began with a fantastic assembly by 3SF based on
teeth and healthy eating. All children performed well and spoke clearly, a great job by all. Year 5 had a Victorian day
today as a ‘WOW’ experience to enter the topic. The children looked great dressed in Victorian attire as too did the
staff. I had the pleasure of a guest appearance as a Victorian Headmaster and managed to scare myself with how mean I
had to be! This afternoon 6 lucky student from years 5 and 6 were lucky enough to take part in a fun with food cook off.
A guest Chef was here from the UK and educated all of year 5 and 6 about healthy eating and how to cook a balanced
meal. This was a great event and I am sure all of the children enjoyed it.
Lastly Miss Rutter has created a star of the week display in the Primary foyer area to celebrate the achievements of our
children across the school. Each week the stars will have their name placed on the board and they will, as always, have
their badge and certificate. Please make sure you take a look and share the successes of others.
Have a lovely weekend,
Christian
Chinese, Shunyi
Chinese
It was an excellent week for the Chinese department! The students now know where their Chinese classes are and all
have clear idea about their teachers’ expectation. Non-native speakers are trying their best to practise pronunciation in
class by doing group work, playing games and doing drama. Their pronuciation is getting better and better. We are very
happy to hear from some of the parents that their children are even helping the parents with their own pronunciation!
In our native speaker group, the students have already started reading at home. Lots of them can’t wait to share the
stories they have read. What a wonderful week!
Foundation Stage, Shunyi
Over the hills and far away
In Shunyi Foundation Stage, we have been enjoying our exciting new playgrounds! There were squeals of excitement
as the children ran over the colourful, hilly ground and got busy role-playing in the new play houses. All the children
have been challenging themselves by climbing, balancing, swinging and sliding on our new equipment!
Teddies
In Teddies, the children have done of wonderful job of getting more settled in their classrooms. They have been
gaining confidence in exploring each classroom area and have been using their hands to explore; including for handprinting,
feeling the texture of sand and splashing in the water tray!
Nursery
In Nursery, children have been using their voices to make lots of different animals sounds and to see if they can
recognise sounds their friends make. They have been having fun with instruments and practising being a conductor.
The children have also been counting using the number song ‘5 currant buns’ and counting out and finding different
numbers of objects. Their focus activity has been all about how things feel when we touch them: they have had lots of
fun with shaving foam and spaghetti!
Reception
Reception children have been learning about the letters ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’ and ‘p’ – they have had fun using lots of sensory
materials to practise writing these letters and have been playing sound games to help them recognise each sound. In
Maths, the children have been ordering numbers to create a number track, which they have been jumping along to
find treasure! In English, the children have been sharing ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear’ and have done a wonderful job of
repeating all the phrases in the story. Finally, each class has been creating a quilt of squares to illustrate our golden
rules: these will help everybody to gain special gems for our class treasure chests!

Globes and Atlases
This week in Year One.
The children have settled into Year 1 routines and have experienced their first week of homework, writing and ASAs.
In English the children have been working on sentence structure and handwriting. They have also been illustrating
stories and writing.
Maths has been very active this week with outdoor ball games, bean bag games and board games. The children have
been learning to count on and back in ones. They have also practised correct formation of numbers as well as begin
to self-correct numbers when recording answers.
Topic has been very exciting this week where the children have continued to learn about the seven continents through
singing, ICT and books. They are very keen to build on their mapping skills using globes and atlases.
Odd and Even
This week in Year Two.
It has been another busy week in Year 2!
In English, this week the children have started writing their own stories with a familiar setting. Most of the children
have written about a story set at the seaside. The description and detail the children have used is wonderful.
We have had great fun in topic looking for bugs in the school grounds. The children used special containers to trap
any bugs they found, before making observational drawings and returning the insects to the garden.
In maths the children have been learning about odd and even numbers. Some of the children played an odd and even
game which they really enjoyed.
Another great week!
This week in Year Three.
This has been a very busy week in Year 3. The children have started using the Thesaurus to find exciting synonyms to
help them improve their ocean poems. They are also busy finishing their amazing 3D ocean creatures’ sculptures in
paper mache. The children are doing a brilliant job and the result will surely be excellent! In the pictures you can see
some of the amazing giant fish collages they have made!
This week in Year Four.
In Year 4, the children have written some inspiring poems with similes. Based on the Topic Kings and Queens, they
have once again proven that they are a creative year group. Great effort was also made in Maths where they worked
with negative numbers. They have also played the teacher during the Reading Buddies visits and are making full use
of the computers in the class. Another great week!

Pastries with Parents
Pastries with Parents.
On Tuesday this week we held the second of this year’s Parent morning
events where Parents are invited in for a croissant or cake with a cup of
coffee. These provide time in the morning for Parents to share time with
their children and other Parents, and have a chat. These have been hugely
popular in the past, last week the EYFS parents had a good showing and
this Tuesday was no exception. A huge turnout of Key Stage one Parents
were there and it was lovely to see many new faces being introduced to
our hugely supportive Parent body. This coming Tuesday we have the
same event for Parents in years three and four, we look forward to seeing
many of the Parents there.
Year 5 stepped back in time To experienced a day in a
Victorian school!
On Friday children in year 5 came to school dressed as Victorian school children. They prepared for the experience
throughout the week studying the past and role-playing some schoolroom scenes. They have drawn a lot of inspiration
from the text ‘Street Child’ and begun to empathise with Jim, the main character. Teachers enjoyed taking on the role
of authoritarian, perhaps a little too much!
The MPR was transformed into a traditional schoolroom. Boys and girls sat separately and were given strict
punishments for misbehaving. They had to use slate boards during the handwriting exercise, say the Lord’s prayer,
rote learn Geography facts and experience reading in a room full of 100 students with only one copy of the text. The
headmaster (Mr Bishop) came by to inspect the school and test the students mental arithmetic knowledge. He found
that the students were learning well which meant that the teachers were doing a fantastic job.
In the afternoon classes competed against one another in Victorian sports day events such as, egg and spoon races,
sack races and 3-legged races.
The day was a fantastic authentic experience and one that will be remembered for a long time.
