Aboutthe College04.Greenhead CollegeWhy choose to studyat a sixth-form college?A sixth-form college caters exclusively forstudents in the 16-19 age range. It givesyou the opportunity to make a fresh startafter GCSE in a new social environmentthat is also academically stimulating.Owing to its size, a sixth-form collegecan offer a broad range of subjectsand subject combinations, a wealth ofenrichment activities, generous pastoraland learning support and specialisedcareers advice.A recent study published in The Timesnewspaper (August 16th 2012) has foundthat students at sixth-form colleges aremore likely to pass their exams andachieve high grades than similar studentsat other institutions. Why choose to studyat Greenhead? The college is widely acknowledged tobe an outstanding provider of educationwith a history of excellence. Since1999 we have been an official BeaconCollege, a “Centre of Excellence”, andfull inspections by Ofsted, in 2004 andmost recently 2008, have judged thecollege to be outstanding. More recentvisits to verify these judgements haveconfirmed the grade: we are delightedwith this especially as sixth form collegeshave been measured against higherbenchmarks than schools. Since then, every OFSTED visit has reinforced theirpositive opinions. You will have access to first-rate teachingand learning support. Our examinationresults are outstanding, placing us nearthe top of the national sixth-form collegeperformance tables. The pass-rate is veryhigh and so is the proportion of studentsgaining the top grades at A and ASlevel. Indeed, the results at Greenheadcompare well with all kinds of institutions, and in a “like with like” comparison ourstudents’ achievement of A*, A or Bgrades would exceed the performanceof similar students in many, and probablymost, well-publicised selective andindependent schools. There is a warm atmosphere and afriendly environment in which you will beencouraged to develop. Personal tutorsprovide continuous pastoral support, looking after the welfare and progress ofthe diverse population of students andguiding them on to the next phase of theircareers. We have an extensive range ofenrichment opportunities and a vastwork-shadowing programme. You will beable to take part in activities that rangefrom short courses to all kinds of sport, music and drama, as well as voluntaryservice in the community or the Duke ofEdinburgh’s Award Scheme. The college enjoys a convenient sitewithin walking distance of Huddersfieldtown centre and its bus and railwaystations. It occupies attractive and wellmaintainedbuildings where you will haveaccess to modern facilities, equipmentand resources.Talk to past and present students or visitour web site at www.greenhead.ac.uk tofind out about life at Greenhead College.

What qualificationsdo I need to starton Advanced level courses?Taking an A-level course is relativelydemanding. To succeed, you will need tohave coped satisfactorily at GCSE level. Most students will take four differentsubjects in their first year of Advancedlevel study, or three and a GCSE resit inMathematics. For this reason, we havea minimum entry requirement of five fullGCSE passes at grade C, from at leastfour different subject areas. This mustinclude a grade C, or higher, in GCSEEnglish Language. Courses “equivalentto GCSE” will be accepted only at thecollege’s discretion. Grades at meritor higher will only be accepted. Onlyone course equivalent to GCSE will beincluded in the entry criteria. We preferGCSEs as they provide more appropriatepreparation for GCE AS and A-levelcourses. To progress onto Mathematicsor separate science (Biology, Chemistry,Physics) AS and A-levels, you must havea grade C or better at the higher level ofGCSE Mathematics, Additional Scienceor separate sciences as appropriate. Ifyou are predicted a grade C in GCSEScience and apply for AS Biology and/orAS Chemistry you may be asked to attenda summer school. How many subjectswill I be able to take? You will embark on four courses chosenfrom our list of A/AS level subjects. AS/A-level General StudiesAll students take the AS and A-level GeneralStudies examinations which test generalknowledge, thinking and communicationskills. We provide preparation classes tocover the broad syllabus. The vast majorityof students pass, thus obtaining an extraqualification, which is proving more andmore useful for gaining admission touniversity or employment.Extended ProjectQualification (EPQ)The EPQ offers students an opportunityto develop essential skills for highereducation and the workplace, in asubject area of their own choice. It isa personal study over which they canexercise control. They can explore furtheran interest arising from their A-levelsubjects or a topic for which they have apersonal passion. This level of choice andflexibility means students are engagedand motivated and they gain valuableresearch, project management andcommunication skills. The assessment, which is 100% internallymoderated, covers both the processand the end product. The end product isusually a written report, a completed logbook and a presentation. Students areassessed on how well they identify anduse resources, carry out research, developtheir ideas to realise an outcome and thenreflect on the outcome and the process.Greenhead students have been verysuccessful and we are pleased to beleading the way on this exciting newqualification. The following information shows thedestinations of the students who left uslast summer.Destinations of A-levelStudents 2012• Higher Education 89.8%• Further Education 3.7% (including ArtFoundation)• Employment and Professional Training5.3%• Seeking employment 1.1%A complete list of student destinations willbe available at Open Evenings or from thecollege office on request.Quality Assurance‘Inspirational’, ‘outstanding’,‘exceptional’, ‘exemplary’ and‘impressive’ – such words pepper bothof our most recent full inspection reportsfrom OFSTED . The college currentlyscores “outstanding: grade 1” on everymeasure. How do we maintain this excellentperformance? As inspectors have said,‘the process of monitoring the qualityof teaching and learning is rigorous andtransparent.’Quality assurance is based on ‘valueadded’. In our system (in use here since1988) we analyse students’ GCSEresults when they arrive. This helps us– and you – to predict your likely A-levelresults: it means that throughout the twoyears we can work together, teachers, personal tutor and student, to achievethe individual’s maximum potential: youwill have regular ‘monitoring’ interviewswith staff in which targets and ways ofmaintaining and improving performancecan be discussed, and encouragementcan be given. The system is supportiveand motivating for students, and italso helps teachers measure theirown performance – it is not simply astatistical exercise, but rather a catalystfor partnership and success. Over thelast few years, compared with over 1200institutions nationally, Greenhead Collegehas been in the top 15% for addedvalue, meaning that an extremely highproportion of students perform well in alltheir classes. Our pastoral system is also ‘original’ tous and has been much copied: we donot ask every teacher to be an expertin university and careers guidance, forexample – instead, we have a team ofaround 25 ‘specialist’ personal tutorswho have ample time available to seestudents on an individual basis, as wellas in their ‘tutor groups’, throughoutthe year. They offer individual supportto students for many things, and alsoprovide a specific contact point forparents etc. OFSTED have judged thisservice also to be ‘outstanding.’Our systems have attracted nationalinterest and have been adopted by manyschools and colleges: over the years wehave run numerous courses for teachersand lecturers from all over the countryto help them implement them in theirown institutions. This work has beenacknowledged by the award of Beaconstatus.EnrichmentIn February 2001, the college achievedits second Queen’s Anniversary Prize. This time the honour was bestowed onthe enrichment programme. The citationdeclares, “The College’s enrichmentprogramme is a national exemplar of whatcan be done at sixth form level to extendstudents’ education and personal growthbeyond their academic courses. Hugelyvaried and demanding, the programmecalls on students to develop self-reliance,promotes citizenship and prepares themto meet the world of work or furtherstudy with confidence and commitment.”Feedback from Ofsted in 2012 identifiedone strength of the college to be a “wellmanaged and extensive enrichmentprogramme with a broad range.”On the next few pages, you will finddetails of some of the activities which goon at Greenhead outside the classroomto enrich your education. These includesports, music, drama, voluntary servicein the community, Duke of Edinburgh’sAward and work-shadowing - all optionsfor you to choose, mostly on Wednesdayafternoons but at other times as well.Courses vary in length from seven weeksto a whole term or the whole season oryear if that is your choice.www.greenhead.ac.uk11.
