On the PoleBy Kim Nelson,PresidentSVR SupportEven though this is the February issue ofthe Drifter, I am writing this in earlyJanuary and I need to make mention of theChristmas and 40th Anniversary Party at theTowe Auto Museum. If you didn't make itthis year you missed a wonderful celebrationand a fitting end to a great SVR year. Myhat goes off to all the people on the organizingcommittee that helped put the party on.They did a great deal of work and it showed. Thanks! Of particular note are the SVRsponsors and vendors that donated doorprizes for Santa and his elves to give out tothe membership. We had over 35 vendorsprovide us with some great gifts for our group. The reason that I want to mention this isbecause we rely on these vendors throughoutthe year, year after year, to support ourdifferent club events. Without their support, both money and gifts, our club wouldn't beable to put on the types of exciting eventsthat you've come to expect. So when you seeone of our vendors, please thank them forthe support they give our club. Let themknow you appreciate what they do for ourclub. And when you're thinking about buyinga new Porsche, getting some maintenancework done on your car, going out to dinneror buying some gifts, use the services of ourvendors and I'm sure it will come back to theclub ten fold. I've included a side-bar with alist of the vendors that supported this yearsChristmas and 40th Anniversary party.2003 Will Be A Busy YearWhile I'm writing this before our Januaryplanning meeting, I can tell you that 2003will be an exciting year for our club. I haveseen the tentative schedule for our region andthe zone and it looks like you could be doingthings with your Zone 7 friends about 52weeks out of the year. It's that event packed.Bill Thorp is working hard to nail down anumber of SVR autocross dates for the year.As many of you will remember, we only hadone autocross last year because we lost oursite at Mather Field. As of this writing wehave several autocross site possibilities andseveral tentative dates set and I know yourPhoto: Bob Peakeboard is committed have having SVR autocrossesthis year. Dwight and LindaMitchell are hard at work planning thisyears CRAB - our clubs 30th. With themove to the Lions Gate Hotel and all theweekend's activities being right on the hotelpremises there will be a lot more time forsocializing and spending time with yourfriends. From my perspective, if I could onlygo to one SVR event this year this would bethe event! Our SVR Zone 7 Concours, headed up by Kent Brandon, will againbe held in conjunction with the ShrinersHospital Concours on June 8th. This wasa wonderful event last year with over 65Porsches entering the Concours andbeautifully displayed on the grass. RikLarson has once again volunteered tohead up the fall Mendocino tour. Thisis a wonderful weekend filled withPorsches, friends, driving and just goodrelaxing fun. And I think that Rik mayhave a few surprises up his sleeve forus this year.Technical Chairperson NeededWe are still looking for a Technical Chairpersonfor the club. This person is responsiblefor disseminating technical informationas well as identifying and coordinating technicalsessions that the membership would beinterested in. The position doesn't take atechnical wizard to do the job because all theinformation needed is available through varioussources including PCA. It does take aperson who is interested in helping out theclub and spending some time coordinatingactivities. So, if any of you are interested orknow someone who might be interestedplease let me or any other board memberknow and we'll take it from there.Plenty to Learn and DoWell, the year is underway and I'm certainlygetting my feet wet in a hurry. I feel veryfortunate that we have so many experiencedpeople in the club that are willing to help meout as I get started. It seems like a lot ofwork for me right now, but I sure it willsmooth out as I come up the learning curve.KimBadges and GoodiesDon’t forget that your new memberpacket had in it a form for membershipbadges, a coupon for $10 off atany SVR event, and a coupon forFIVE Share the Wealth tickets at anyof the dinner meetings. !Thanks goes out to:A&S BMW MotorcycleCarmelita'sCloudsDavid Lawrence EditionsDrivers Jewlery.comFrank's AutomotiveGolfland/SunSplashSVR Goodie StoreFabrication SpecialistsGriot's GarageIPB AutosportJackson RancheriaKarma KreationsLittle River InnMarriott HotelMeguiar'sMemphis BBQMothersNiello PorscheOK TirePorsche Cars - GermanyPorsche Cars North AmericaRacesetterRailroad MuseumRenwood WineryRick's HaciendaSacramento Brewing CompanySummit Industries, Inc.Tire RackTweeksVilla Tascano WineryWine Country MotorsportsWong's Chinese RestaurantYager's Brewery and PubZims AutotechnikZymol4 The Drifter

CRAB...theBeginningBy Linda MitchellCRAB 30 Co-chairThe Legend of CRAB “0”As we approach the 30 th Anniversary ofCRAB, did you ever wonder how CRABactually began, and why was it named CRAB?Believe it or not, there probably are very fewpeople within the club that really knowthe origins of CRAB. But before I start, letme take a moment for a disclaimer. Timehas a way of slightly fogging and distortingthe memory. For purposes of this story, let’ssay my memory of what occurred is correct. With that thought in mind, let’s begin thestory. The CRAB Storyupon a time, many of the regionsOnce in California put on a “West CoastWeekender”. These events were particularlypopular during the years when the PorscheParade was held far from our GoldenState. One year in the mid- to late-1960’s, Sacramento Valley Region put on aWeekender. For some reason (no explanationwill be given here), the attendance was quitepoor. SVR was particularly miffed at the poorturnout from Golden Gate Region, which wasthe largest and most competitive region at thetime in Northern California. However, GGRfelt it was not their fault that the eventwas poorly attended, and the two regionsbecame estranged. This less thanideal relationship between the regions continuedfor several years.19713.The scene now shifts to 1971, when alongcame the HEROES of the story........Phillip(The Goose) Marks of SVR and me, LindaMitchell (then the VP of Golden GateRegion). At that time Phillip was Managerof the El Macero Country Club in Davis. AsVice President of GGR, I was in charge ofarranging their monthly dinner meetings, andfelt that “it was definitely time for the tworegions to bury the hatchet”. Phillip and Igot together early in 1971, and planned anevent to make that happen.Phillip, of course, was great at organizingdinner events, and came up with the idea of aCrab Feed for this joint event. At the timethe regions were rather formal at dinner meetings- many male SVR members wore redblazer jackets and GGR guys often wore goldblazers (the cool thing to wear at that time). As we definitely wanted people to mingle betweenthe regions, we arrived at the idea ofplacing gold and red napkins at alternate placesettings. These colors were used to identifywhere each region member was to sit. In thisway, everyone could make new friends withothers at their table. Each region publicizedthe joint Crab Feed in their newsletters andthe turnout was outstanding (recollectionswere of over 100 people).GGR toured up to Davis in several largegroups. At that time, people from the BayArea (myself included) didn’t know whereEl Macero was located. My directions said itwas only “a few miles” after passing Vacaville. These vague instructions proved a bit challengingto the GGR folks, but everyone finallyarrived safe and sound at the club. Asplanned, the regions mingled, and then satdown for a marvelous dinner, alternatingmember seating as requested. We couldn’tbelieve it worked so well! And the food,FANTASTIC! What a successful evening itwas. Friends, again at last. After all was said and done, SVR (theregion that loves Weekenders) said.....youknow this Crab thing is a really great idea.Let’s expand it and make it a week-end event, and we’ll call it “CRAB”. The “C” will be forthe Crab Feed, “R” for a Rally, “A” foran Auto-X, and “B” for Begegnen (I’ve beentold this is the German word for meeting). As the saying goes, “the rest is history”!Now you know the story of CRAB “0”…...............The Beginning.Chairpersons Dwight MitchellLinda MitchellCo-Chairs Cindi BreauxKern BreauxRegistration Rik LarsonSponsorship Bill KeeganHotel/Restaurant Kim NelsonDoor Prizes Tom SissonKatherine SheppardAwards Sue FlemingWelcome Party Ira McKeeCarol McKeeCindy BrandonKent BrandonKaren McGlumphyRich McGlumphyAutocross Kern BreauxFunkhana Cyndee PeartGreg PeartWalking Tour Tambra KroetzTom KroetzDriving Tour Judy HannaRich SwensonRallyeJ. However,it seems that the winter weathermade the event even more festive onceinside the museum. Members were greetedby a choir singing Christmas Carols as theyregistered, picked up drink coupons andreceived a gift from Porsche CARS NORTHAMERICA, a Porsche Lapel pin. Uponentering the dining and stage area, they weregreeted by several Porsche banners, a giantPorsche Crest, 2 Porsches parked on the stageas well as 2 fully decorated and lit ChristmasTrees. The dining area and tables were festivelydecorated with greens, ribbons and candles.Garlands with lights surrounded the entire diningarea.Walking RallyThe event started at 4pm with a very cleverand entertaining Walking Rally written byHerb Hoover. A soon as the choir had finished; The River City high school Jazz band tookover. SVR members enjoyed the music asthey greeted friends and began the walkingrally. As you would expect from the SVRmembership, there were 16 perfect scores onthe Rally and many who scored very close toperfect as well. The ultimate winners cameclosest to guessing the total number ofgumballs that could be held in the antique GasPump gumball dispenser by the front entrance.Jim and Sheila McDade had a perfect scoreand also came within 50 gumballs of thecorrect answer!DinnerThe dinner was catered and guests lined upto make their choices from a nicely decoratedbuffet table adorned with a winter sled, greensand candles. The Towe Auto Museum’s GrandWurlitzer Organ was played by Dave Sauerwho performed many Christmas favoritesduring dinner. For desert, cakes decoratedfor the SVR 40 th Anniversary and Christmasparty were served following dinner.Shriners HospitalKatherine Curran (Public Relations Directorfor Shriners Hospital) and her husbandMichael were invited to the event to accept8 The Drifter

The NewCayenneRoad TestBy Bob Peake, SVR MemberPart One: Leipzig, ‘Home of theCayenne’If you think about it a little, you will realizethat Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the HolyGrail for most of today's Porsche enthusiasts, was really somewhat of an accident. WhenFerry Porsche started building cars there over50 years ago, he had no grand plan to create a"Mecca", it just happened to be where he lived. As the marque grew so did the manufacturingand R&D facility requirements. In theearly 1970's the R&D center and test trackin Weissach was built, since Porsche hadoutgrown its limited space in Zuffenhausen.Today you can take tours of the facilities anda very small museum, but these facilitieswere built for "internal use", opening themto tours was only an "after-thought" to tryand accommodate the desires of Porschecustomers. The new Manufacturing and CustomerCenter in Leipzig on the other handwas planned and built with a single goal, tocreate a venue where customers could actually"experience Porsche!"About LeipzigIf you are like me, you had never heard of it,until Porsche decided to build a facility there.Well, it has been around for a while. It startedas the fortified town of Urbs Libzi in 1015, itbecame a city in 1165 when it was grantedtown and market privileges and has becamean important center for trade fairs, publishing, and commerce for Europe. University ofLeipzig is one of Germany's oldest centers oflearning and Goethe, the father of Germanliterature studied here. The setting forGoethe's most famous work "Faust" is inAuerbachs Keller, which is still a restaurant inthe town today. Johann Sebastian Bach waschoirmaster of the St. Thomas's Boys Choirand is buried here. The St. Nicholas's Churchdates from 1175 and has one of the largestorgans in all of Germany, which Porsche hasmade a considerable donation to restore; itis the only organ in the world which is"started" on the left-hand side. There aremany buildings from the 1500's and 1600'swhich are still in use today. Needless to say,you can easily spend several days exploring thetown of Leipzig itself!“ The Porsche facilitiesare on the edge of town near the autobahn.Porsche spent over 3 years and $400million purchasing the 500-acre site, and designingand building the new facilities in easternGermany. It is the central production facilityfor the Cayenne and the Carrera GT.The visual centerpiece is a 100-foot tall diamondshaped customer center which housesspecial rooms for customers to take deliveryof their cars, a VIP Lounge with a bar andclosed circuit TV of the test track, the controlcenter for the track, conference facilities, smalland large auditoriums (500 seats), a state-ofthe-arttheater, two restaurants, and an exhibitionarea for museum cars.Test FacilitiesThe on-road testing facilities are also stateof-the-art.There is a new 3.7 kilometer (2.3mile) FIA-approved race track that was designedusing layouts of some of the most legendarycorners from racetracks around theworld: the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, thekerbs from Nurburgring, the Parabolica fromMonza, Loews curve at Monaco, Curve diLesmo at Monza, the Bus Stop at Spa-Francorchampsare all included in the race track. The track is also completely covered by 30cameras that can be viewed on 32 monitors inthe track control center, and will be used forPorsche Sport Driving Schools and otherevents. There are also additional paved trackfacilities which are used for R&D and to testdriveevery new vehicle that comes off theproduction line. The off-road facilities are also extensive. They are intended to give you the opportunityto experience the off-road capabilities ofthe Cayenne on a 250-acre area that includesa 6 km (3.7 mile) circuit with 17 "trainingmodules", such as a seesaw, wading trough, log course, ramps and bunker crossings, a 60%ascent, and various surfaces like mud, gravel, potholes, and hills to drive on and through;all the time surrounded by a native wildlifehabitat with a protected grazing area for wildoxen and wild horses which keep the site preservedwithout the use of machinery.Factory DeliveryIf you choose to take factory delivery of yourCayenne, it will be a true "Porsche Experience"that will include a tour of the productionfacilities, and the opportunity to use theservices of the Customer Center and museum. Then you will experience both on-roadand off-road training sessions in a Cayennesimilar to yours, before finally accepting thekeys and your new vehicle. If you can't waituntil your Cayenne is ready, or you don't reallyneed one, you can arrange trips through thePorsche Travel Club...like a 3-day trip that includesdriving a new Carrera from Stuttgartto Leipzig, then spending a day of on-roadand off-road training driving a demo Cayenne, and then driving back to Stuttgart in a Boxster-S......Oryou can enroll in one of the onedayand two-day courses offered through thePorsche Driving Experience. Eventually therewill also be Porsche Club Tours of Leipzig. As I mentioned in Part 2, I was in Leipzigfor two days with about 120 others. On FridayI wandered around Leipzig for a fewhours, then that evening there was a very nicecocktail reception, introduction of the Cayenne, dinner, floor-show, and dancing. OnSaturday we were divided into four groups anddid the on-road and off-road modules, thenhad technical and marketing presentations onthe Cayenne.TechnicalA few of the technical things that stick inmy mind from the presentations include howPorsche has used technology to make maintenanceso easy: air filters that last 72,000miles; power steering fluid, coolant, and fuelfilters that never need to be replaced; and a nomaintenance ignition systems with spark plugsthat are replaced at 36,000 miles on the Turboand 54,000 miles on the Cayenne S. Thesuspension system is two complete modules(front and rear) that mount to the main chassisthrough hard rubber blocks, this isolatesvibration and noise, and also let VW do somethingcompletely different with their Touaregplatform. Some of the "optional equipment":like an electrically retractable trailer hitch thatcan still tow 7700 pounds, curve lights thatmove to light the sides of the road dependingon vehicle speed and steering wheel movement,12-way power seats that also rememberyour radio station and AC settings. Or,the Bose Digital Surround system with 13speakers and a 100-Watt subwoofer, 4 zoneA/C, an option for the heater to work for 20minutes after the car is turned off, heated seatsand heated steering wheel rim, a completelykeyless entry system that senses a card in yourpocket to open the locked door when youtouch the handle and start the vehicle with abutton on the dash! And with mileage estimatesare up to 24/25 mpg highway and 18/19 mpg combined (Turbo/S)...I think theyabout covered it all!“ As I alluded to in thelast article, a Cayenne S with air suspension iscertainly now on my "wish list"; as is a returntrip to Leipzig to spend a few days exploringa truly charming and historic town. If you areplanning to come to Germany, be sure includetwo or three days in Leipzig on youritinerary....It is most definitely a "PorscheExperience" you will not want to miss!“12 The Drifter

2002MendocinoBy Rik LarsonSVR Rally DirectorSame Time, Next Year!40 PCA cars enjoyed the annual trek to theNorthern California coast the first weekendin November. Besides Sacramento Valley Region, there were cars from Golden Gate, LomaPrieta, Yosemite, Sierra Nevada, and DiabloRegions. This year we had 2 tour groups leavingat intervals from Mocha Joe’s in El Macero.I had laid out a course that featured anumber stops that were optional based uponthe needs of the individual groups. Rich andKaren McGlumphy led the first group or the‘less frequent stop’ folks. Turns out that the‘slow’ or ‘more frequent stop’ group decidedto take some liberties with the route andshowed up at the lunch stop ahead of the ‘lessfrequent stop’ group. Tim and Sue Flemingled this group. Seems that several of the folksin this group knew of some short cuts.Simi Winery in Healdsburg provided agreat location for everyone to have lunchunder the trees. There were plenty of picnictables and the rest rooms were nearby. Severalfolks from the Bay Area joined the group atthis time. It was then off to the coast insmaller groups. Several cars decided to stop atthe wineries along Highway 128 beforeproceeding to the coast. After check in, we got together to discussthe day’s experiences. We met in Mikeand Emily Willis’ room to share the lunchleftovers and toast the sunset.Saturday’s schedule included shoppingin the nearby town of Mendocino with theafternoon setup for a kite-flying contest. But there was no wind. We adjoined back tothe Willis’ room for more socializing anddistribution of small prizes (thanks Niello).Saturday night was dinner as various restaurantsin the area. One large group went to theMendocino Brewing Company up in FortBragg. Karen McGlumphy arranged thisactivity. Thanks Karen. The entire weekend was beautiful.Sunday was checkout for most of the group.12 members of the group stayed over onSunday night. Planning for next year hasalready begun.Mendocino TourSame Time, Next Year!October 31, 2003Could there be a Halloween Partyin the making?
