Staff have been asked by our universitypartners about the usefulness of this initiative and theresults will be reported in the next newsletter. Most families would be aware that we have receivedan additional 416 computers as part of theCommonwealth’s Digital Education Revolution. Someof these computers were replacements for aging devicesin the cabled computer suites, but most were lap tops ornet books for use in classrooms on our wirelessnetwork. This reflects the movement - as part of 21 stcentury education – to anywhere anytime learning withtechnology.Currently we can only run 300 devices from our wirelessnetwork and so we are awaiting confirmation of DECS’funding for an extension of our wireless network toenable over 1000 devices to run simultaneously. Thisfunding will come from the Commonwealthinfrastructure grant. Then we will be able to start theprocess of 1:1 computer:student ratio beginning withour new Year 8s in semester 2 2010. To complementthis development a group of teachers and school leadersare meeting together to redevelop an international!thinking! Year 8 curriculum that utilises the power oftechnology for 21 st century curriculum delivery. The 1:1computer to student ratio will then progress through theschool. We are also exploring a portal device that will allowstudents and staff to bring their own laptops fromhome and plug effortlessly into our wireless network. Most staff have now been equipped with net books bythe school. They can’t yet access administrative filesover the wireless network because of security reasons, but thus are getting to know their machines using thecabled network. The portal device that we are exploringwill resolve the security access issues. The final piece of the jigsaw is to invest in anotherinternet provider to provide faster speed and lessbandwidth restrictions than the one provided by DECSthat causes students and staff a great deal of frustration.Unfortunately we will still need to pay for the DECS’provided service. We are needing to spend a great deal of money creatingthe technological environment that will enable teachersand students to use technology anywhere anytime toimprove learning outcomes, but we believe that it is avery worthwhile investment in our students’ futures. As always if things are working well please tell everyone.School leaders have been inviting families of studentswhose grades indicate that support is needed to meetwith them to discuss what needs to be done. If youhave any concerns about your son/daughter’s progressparticularly in relation to their term 3 report pleaseemail their Year Level Leader and make anappointment.Wendy Johnson PrincipalFrom the ChairGoverning Council Report12 October Meeting – Materials and Services ChargesWe received no dissenting comments from any parentsas to the proposed Materials and Services charges fornext year so Council has agreed unanimously to set thecharges at $655.00. By now you will have received aletter seeking your approval of this amount. Thevoting slips must be received at the school by 5pm onFriday November 13. Please feel free to contact me orother Governing Council members if you requirefurther information before casting your vote.Interestingly, Council did receive feedback from someparents who would like to have the option to pay anextra amount – for particular, dedicated purposes toenhance facilities or resources at the school. We arecurrently investigating this possibility – and to whatextent such donations could be tax-deductible.International Day – 29 OctoberExcitement built as we approached our InternationalDay celebrations. This year we made a special effort toencourage interested parents and caregivers to comealong and sample some school life. Don’t let youradolescents tell you that there is no place for parents atsecondary school or that no-one else’s parents will bethere…. We’re aiming for a critical mass of parents at allschool events (there is safety in numbers!!) and, deepdown, your offspring may well be a bit pleased thatyou’ve taken an interest. (Research shows that studentswhose parents take an active interest in their education- 2 -

and school life have consistently better educationaloutcomes.)Families’ Skills and Interests SurveyThank you to everyone who completed this survey forus – the information we have obtained so far has beenvery useful. We are happy to announce that the winnersof the cinema tickets are….. (Drum Roll!!) Joanneand Wayne Verrall. We will be contacting these luckywinners. And by the way, it’s still not too late tocomplete a survey if you have not yet managed to maketime. You can do so by logging on to the schoolwebsite at www.gihs.sa.edu.au We will be selectinganother family for cinema tickets towards the end of theyear and everyone who has provided us with a surveyup to that point will be in the running to win…..Coming UP - Sports Survey for Parents & CaregiversYou may think we have gone survey- mad!! But we dowelcome information and feedback from all membersof our school community to allow the school (andGoverning Council) to be as responsive as possible tothe needs of students and parents. The Sports staff andStudent Life Co-ordinator are keen to know whatparents think about the Sports Program at Glenunga –its strengths and weaknesses - and have initiated asurvey which will be coming out in the next fortnight. Please keep an eye out for it and take the time to let usknow your views.Building the Education Revolution… ongoingWork has now occurred in some classrooms andmembers of Governing Council took the opportunityfor a quick tour after our last meeting – to smell thenew paint and check out the fresh carpets. The roomscertainly look smarter and help convey a sense of prideand “TLC” to students and staff. More work isscheduled and we are setting our sights on corridors andsome of the older infrastructure like lockers.Aim for the Stars GrantsThe Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation iscurrently offering the opportunity for young women tofurther their educational and/or professionaldevelopment. It is a difficult time forour Year 12 students: on the one hand they have beenlooking forward to the end of a demanding year and thebeginning of the next phase of their lives. On the otherhand they come to a realization that the friendshipsbuilt over their high school years may be changed by thedifferent directions that students take after Year 12. Formany, school has offered 13 years of routine securityand next year remains unknown. Combined with thepressure of Year 12 exams and deadlines it can be aconfusing and emotional time for our school leavers.Consequently, it is important that the school givesstudents ample opportunity to process these changesthrough our celebratory events. The Year 12 Formal was a fantastic event! Organised byMr Matsouliadis (Year Level Leader) and the Year 12Committee (led by Hannah Hill and Cristina Valero) theevent ran very smoothly which is indicative of theamount of work that went into putting this eventtogether. The students looked fantastic: it was clear thatmany had obviously planned meticulously for thisspecial night. Staff who attended the evening enjoyed apleasant evening with our wonderful Year 12 students. The Year 12 Farewell Assembly provided anopportunity for the school community to say goodbyeto our Year 12 students. Our Principal Wendy Johnsonthanked the Year 12 students for their contribution tothe school. The video compiled by Tom Hodgsonshowed a montage of our Year 12s at work and play andtriggered great memories. Martha Browning andConnor Brand spoke on behalf of the Year 12s andentertained the assembly with humorous recollectionsof their experiences at school. The Year 12 Graduation was a huge event attended byover 900 people at the Adelaide Town Hall. Formerstudent Anisa Leaver spoke about her experiencesworking as a legal intern in black townships in Durban. She urged the Year `12 students to pursue their dreamsand emphasised what it means to be a global citizen. Her message was to strive for your personal best.Congratulations to all of the students who werepresented at the graduation ceremony. We wish themwell in their exams and trust that they are equipped forthe challenges that lay beyond school. The Student Forum membersrepresent students through advisory groups, year levelcommittees, Principal meetings, events and forums. They link with, listen to and support all clubs andstudent groups in the school. We look forward to adynamic team working with the Prefect Chairs.Middle School Commitment to WorkThe research tells us of the importance of the earlyintervention with students in terms of their work habitsand the need to explicitly develop independent learningskills in the Middle School. In line with our seniorschool we have updated our student Commitment to Workprocedures to include Progress Markers. The new procedures work as follows. Once a task hasbeen set the teacher makes periodic checks and thestudent provides evidence as to how far they haveprogressed in terms of meeting the deadline. When astudent has not provided enough evidence of workcompletion a Progress Marker sticker is to be pastedin the student diary. They are then required to completethe work at lunch or for homework. The student maybe required to be supervised by the subject teacher orthe Focus Room staff during the school day. When a student has not provided enough evidence ofwork completion a Progress Marker sticker is pasted inthe student diary and needs to be signed by theparent/caregiver. Negotiations regarding extensions ofdeadlines are needed to be carried out as soon as thereason is apparent and the responsibility for negotiatingan extension rests with the student. Students who fail tohand in their tasks on the due date (without negotiation)will attend the Focus Room at lunchtimes until the taskis completed.NAPLAN – National Testing ResultsAll students in Year 9 have received (NAPLAN)National Testing Results and a covering letter from theschool. The areas assessed in this testing includenumeracy, language conventions, reading and writing. The test results provide the school with valuablediagnostic information, allowing the capacity to trackstudent performance over time and the capacity tocompare our results with like schools. Our Year 9students will be working with their teachers over thenext few weeks to analyse their results in Task1 of theirPersonal Learning Plan.Uniform – Are You Prepared? All students are required to wear full and correctuniform. I would ask students and parents/caregiverswho may be purchasing new uniform items for 2010 topurchase or order the items this year before the end ofNovember. This is the first back-to-schoolexperience at Glenunga for our new uniformsupplier Brandmode and ordering uniform itemsfor 2010 will assist the company in their planning.Could you also ensure that girls’ skirts and dresses areworn at an appropriate length for school.
