Use of a corrosion inhibitor isstrongly recommended by the manufacturer. Getting started on your landscapeIncluding native plants in your landscape can be assimple as adding a native plant or two to existing flowerbeds or as challenging as starting with a blank slate. Thebasic steps, however, are the same for both.Know your sun and soil conditionsIf your site receives six to eight hours of sun, it’s sunny—less than that, it’s shady. There are three basic types ofsoil structure: sandy, clay and loam. Much of Missouri iscursed with clay soils that are sticky when wet, form hardlumps when dry, and crack in hot weather. Sandy soils letmoisture drain away quickly, taking nutrients with it. Bothsandy and clay soil can be improved with the addition oforganic matter such as composted plant material.Consider your purpose and your propertyIf you’re adding native plants to an existing bed, you needonly to look for plants that will thrive in that location. Ifyou have a blank slate, evaluate your space. Walk aroundyour house and sketch existing trees, shrubs and flowerbeds, if they exist. Sketch in walkways, patios, drivewaysand make note of easements and drain pipes that mightlimit your landscaping.Develop a planAs you design your native plant garden, think in layersand begin with trees, which form the highest layer. Nextconsider small trees, shrubs and vines that will thrivein the filtered light of trees and create the second layer.Finally, consider the third layer (the floor), which you canfill with perennials. An area with full sun has no layers andis perfect for a prairie planting. Continue by consideringthe birds, butterflies and small mammals you want toattract to your property. Once you’ve determined the soil conditions onyour planting site, select a species appropriate for thoseconditions.For large projects, work in phasesNative-plant conversion projects take time. Seeding a fewacres of prairie involves distinct phases and seasons ofinstallation: preparation, seeding and weed control.
