IPfocusHikvision Gives All-round View atRotonda, SloveniaHikvision’s two-megapixel network cameras arebeing used at the Rotonda building in Ljubljana, anew-build commercial development in the Sloveniancapital overlooking the Alps. The 15,000 square meter tower block is divided intotwo sections with separate entrances and foyerareas that require extensive CCTV monitoring andaccess control. Individual business units on each ofthe five floors are occupied by international banks, software houses and law firms. Flexibility ofconfiguration and quality of IT infrastructure havebeen principal concerns in construction, with theHikvision digital surveillance solution being anintegral part of this offering.ChallengesThe building owners required IP-addressable camerasthroughout the structure with tender requirementsspecifying image quality that would allow ongoingdevelopment such as the introduction of videoanalytics. While the extent of glass coverage in theRotonda has energy consumption benefits, there areimplications for CCTV operation from the use offloor-to-ceiling windows. The Hikvision cameras are also used in undergroundand outdoor parking lots across a range of lightingconditions. The need to capture highlight andshadow detail in the same scene required flexibleoptics in lobby areas, stairwells, lifts and communalspaces including a restaurant, with the cameras’motion detection capability proving importantoutside office hours.SolutionsThe 130-camera system from Hikvision wasimplemented by Slovenian integrator Sintal dd. Sintalrealized that their customer needed the image34_issue 27quality provided by progressive scan technologycameras and appreciated that facility managersrequired advanced vari-focal functionality and highresolutionimages if they were to secure the site. The integrator on this project specified Hikvisiontwo-megapixel network cameras in the knowledgethat the units would provide the required detail andoptimum total resolution in high-contrast and backlitsituations. Color rendering and optimal exposureacross the range of lighting situations encounteredwere key considerations, with the client beinganxious to avoid camera ‘noise’ in the form of pixelblooming and vertical smearing which were apossibility with other vendors given the ambientlighting conditions. The DS-2CD852MF-E cameras used at the Rotondabuilding allow Texas Instruments DaVinci hardwarecompression as well as offering H.264 dual-streamvideo compression. Users benefit from HD720P(1600x1200) video preview while additional featuresinclude electronic pan-tilt-zoom (e-PTZ) and maskingof privacy zones. The Rotonda office block has enormous politicalsignificance in that it is part of a commercial, infrastructure and residential development that willconnect adjacent parts of the city which have beendivided during two world wars and the city’s historyas part of Yugoslavia.Mr Bostjan Kurmansek of Sintal d.d. said: “Since theoffice block is brand-new our engineers benefitedfrom the fact that the structured IT cabling alreadyin place proved suitable for transmission ofsurveillance images. Mapping, scheduling and layoutwere all simplified by Hikvision’s video managementsoftware.”ProfileRotonda Office Building, Ljubljana, Slovenia.Challenges:The building features varied optical conditions acrossa broad range of lighting. Curtain-wall and glassconstruction techniques have created a requirementto minimise camera ‘noise.’ There was a need to‘piggy-back’ with structured IT cabling and tooptimise RAID usage.Products adopted:1. Hikvision two-megapixel DS-2CD852MF-E networkcameras.2. Hikvision IVMS video management software.Features:1. Network camera with PoE providing high-definitionIP video. Optimises image capture across camera’sfield of view. Real-time video and audio compressionwith no frame loss.2. Various live view modes, ‘snapshot’ live view image, digital zoom support, motion recording, multiplealarm types, email and SMS notification, search bytime and alarm events, support for cell phoneconnection. He continued: “This is a best-of-breed solution whichexploits the efficiency of Hikvision’s compressionalgorithms. The network has extensive storage, eachNVR being allocated ten terabytes. The system uses 9and 24-point switching from Cisco, with the networkhaving been designed in-house by Sintal engineers. In the event of a problem with the Ethernetconnection these cameras support local storage viaSD memory cards.”Sintal d.d. is a leading security integrator in Slovenia, employing 1,700 staff and turning over $70m in 2009.The company secures more than 15,000 properties, and in addition to Ljubljana has offices in Prestranekand Nova Gorica on the Slovenian border with Italy.Sectors of operation include CCTV, access control, retail shrinkage and fire prevention.Mr Polo Cai, Vice President of Hikvision, said:“Hikvision is aware that camera ‘noise’ not onlycompromises image quality but is wasteful ofRAID/recording capacity. Every aspect of thisapplication was based on the client’s unusualimaging needs. While Hikvision is adept at integratinglegacy analogue units into hybrid solutions, thislocation – being a new-build project – is distinctivefor using IP-addressable technology throughout.”location.”
