The 'night <strong>of</strong> nights'THE Hilton Hotel was <strong>the</strong> venue forgreyhound racing’s night <strong>of</strong> nights in Februarywhen Bogie Leigh was crowned <strong>the</strong> <strong>2004</strong><strong>Greyhound</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Year</strong>.The GRA and <strong>the</strong> Brisbane Clubcombined to attract more than 300 industryparticipants and fans to what could only bedescribed as a wonderful night.For <strong>the</strong> first time, <strong>the</strong> industry night saw<strong>the</strong> presentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greyhound</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Year</strong>awards from each club in <strong>the</strong> state, as well as<strong>the</strong> premier award.We are already receiving feedback fromwithin <strong>the</strong> industry, <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> it morethan favourable but some constructivecomments have been taken on board and wehope to implement <strong>the</strong>se in 2006.Our congratulations go to all awardwinners, but specially to owner Les Bein andtrainer Tony Brett and <strong>the</strong>ir great championBogie Leigh who was a deserved winner <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> major award.IT will be a punters’ paradise at CannonPark on May 7 as <strong>the</strong> Cairns Jockey Club runsits first “gallops and greyhounds” meeting.The CJC is co-ordinating with <strong>the</strong> Cairns<strong>Greyhound</strong> Club to hold a joint horse andgreyhound meeting.The jockey club was allocated its May 7meeting to make up for <strong>the</strong> washed-outJanuary 22 program.With five horse races and up to tengreyhound events, it is envisaged <strong>the</strong>re willbe a couple <strong>of</strong> dog races to kick <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> daywith a greyhound race between eachsubsequent gallops event.CJC Racing Manager Michael Stewartsaid <strong>the</strong> joint meeting was a bold move butan exciting one.“This will be a big day <strong>of</strong> racing forCairns, <strong>the</strong>re could be up to 15 local racesfor punters,” he said. “It gives punters evenmore reason to make it down to Cannon Park,<strong>the</strong>re will be plenty happening.”Both Stewart and greyhound clubsecretary Kathy King agreed <strong>the</strong> day wouldraise <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> both codes and was anexample <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strong relationship between<strong>the</strong> two organisations.The greyhounds generally race at CannonPark on Saturday night when <strong>the</strong>re is nodaytime gallops meeting.“We’re willing to give it a try, <strong>the</strong>re willTHE Q.L.D.
