Convention Information 2What’s New This Year?TracksIn an effort to help homeschool families, CHAP has formulatedseveral tracks in the workshop schedule which focus onspecial areas:The Getting Started Track is especially geared toward newhomeschoolers even though some of the topics may be of interestto experienced homeschoolers, too. In this track you can learnabout how to comply with Pennsylvania’s homeschool law,keeping lesson plans that help you, learning styles so you canhelp your child learn, teaching reading, and how to homeschoolwith toddlers under foot.The Homeschooling Thru Graduation Track is designed tohelp homeschool parents guide right up to the child’s graduation.Topics will cover preparing transcripts, courses to prepare forcollege, advance placement courses, preparing for the marketplace,preparing for the home, what happens after high school, and onehomeschool graduate’s view of what worked.For homeschool leaders, there is the yearly Support GroupLeaders’ Town Hall Meeting where leaders can share ideas.We ask that support group leaders stop at the CHAP booth(109–110) to pre-register for this meeting, as light refreshmentswill be served. New this year, following the town hall meeting,there are two workshop sessions geared toward the needs ofhomeschool leaders: tips and “tipfalls” of leadership and creatinga homeschool co-op.New RoomWe do not have the EH1 room this year and are using the EquineBarn instead.Lunch in the CafeteriaDon’t forget! The cafeteria is closer this year, in the Equine Barn.Vendor DrawingsSeveral vendors have agreed to do prize drawings at their booths.If you sign up for one of these, you will hear an announcementat some point during the convention, but only when there are noworkshops in progress. Vendors set their own drawing time andbring a paper to the speaker booth with the name of their boothand the winner of the prize. The speaker booth volunteer willannounce the winner as soon as it is possible.Discipling Our Families“All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and greatshall be the peace of your children.” —Isaiah 54:13Exposing A Trojan HorseThe National Alliance of Christian HomeEducation Leadership is announcing therelease of the DVD Exposing a TrojanHorse, which is an exposé of governmentfunded,public-school-at-home programsrecruiting home educators in many states.Encouraged by the overwhelming supportof those Alliance members in attendanceat the conference in Glorieta, New Mexico, the Alliance boardauthorized the production of this DVD.As you know, public-school-at-home and government-fundedprograms for homeschoolers often target home educators to tryto “bring them back” into the government system. The DVDexplores the implications of participation in government-fundedhomeschool programs and their impact on both families’ livesand the homeschool movement in general. Exposing a TrojanHorse presents families with thought provoking interviews withChristian home educators.This 30-minute documentary can be used at support groupleadership training events, support group meetings, and withindividual families.Copies are on sale for $10.00 at the CHAP booth or may beordered through our website: www.CHAPonline.com. Mailordercost is $10.00 plus $2.50 shipping.Take some time during the convention to watch this mostinteresting and informative DVD, in the Equine Arena duringlunch at 1:00 p.m. on Friday or 12:00 noon on Saturday. You canalso see a continuous loop of the DVD at the CHAP booth.Recycling ProgramCHAP would like to thank you for bringing your old ink cartridgesin for collection. Please place the cartridges in the cardboardcollection box labeled ink toner and we’ll take it from there.CHAP has discontinued thecurrent recycling program toraise funds that support thework of the CHAPFoundation. We willupdate our associatesof any change in thisarea as we seek to finda program that moreclosely matches CHAP’sfundraising needs.CHAP Needs You Next Year!The CHAP Convention needs you to volunteer. We require many volunteers to run theconvention. We desire and need your help to make the convention a success. The benefitsof volunteering include:• An opportunity to serve fellow homeschoolers.• Tuition rebate equal to the tuition of each volunteer.• Early bird shopping, 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. on Friday. (Imagine a chance to shop with onlythree hundred other people.)• Online orientation, so no early morning orientation meeting to attend.In order to volunteer, you must go to our website: www.CHAPonline.com. Volunteering can only takeplace online. Do not mail in the registration if you are volunteering. You must register online. After fillingout the registration form, you will be given a choice of volunteer jobs from which to choose. You will know immediately if youreceived your choice. We do online volunteer orientation as well, so we can expand the actual convention time for everyone. 22 nd AnnualCHAP Homeschool ConventionMay 9 – 10, 2008Convention Hours:Friday, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.—Free Early Session; No Vendor Hall9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.What Is CHAP?CHAP is the Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania,a nonprofit organization founded to encourage and supportfamilies interested in home education. CHAP assists parentsin understanding the Pennsylvania homeschool law.CHAP provides leadership and direction for homeschoolers ona national and statewide basis. News and updates can be foundat www.CHAPonline.com, in the CHAP Magazine, and bysubscribing to the CHAP e-News and the CHAP e-Alert. AllCHAP board members are unpaid volunteers. CHAP does notgive, rent, or sell, its mailing list.The CHAP Booth (109–110) is located across the aisle fromthe Information Area in the Vendor Hall. The booth is staffedto answer any questions you may have about homeschooling,CHAP, and its ministries.Farm Show Complex Information:No food or drink may be brought into the Farm Show Complex.Please be above reproach and respect the rules of the facility.The Farm Show has one ATM machine located outside the mainentrance. Please consult your complex map for exact locationdenoted “$.” The emergency phone number for the Farm ShowComplex during the hours of the convention is 717-783-2815.Wristbands:If you lose your wristband there will be a $3 handling fee toreplace it. Go to the Special Registration Area for assistance.Wristbands are nontransferable.Children:The convention is designed for parents to examine andpurchase curriculum; and attend seminars and workshops forencouragement, inspiration, and education. Child care is notprovided. Children must be supervised at all times by eithera parent or another responsible adult. Since seminars andworkshops are being recorded, we would like to provide qualityrecordings without extraneous sounds. Children may attend,with a parent, seminar sessions as long as they are quiet. Wewould suggest sitting on an aisle, near an exit, in order to leavequickly if the child becomes noisy.Nursing Mothers’ RoomFacilities will be available for nursing mothers, but baby-careproducts are not provided. Only very young children mayaccompany their mothers into the Nursing Mothers’ Room,located in the Vendor Hall, near EH3.No Food or Drink:No food or drink may be brought into the Farm Showbuilding by order of the Farm Show. You are welcome to goto your car to eat a sack lunch but please be above reproachand do not bring food or drink into the Farm Show building.This is not CHAP’s rule but the Farm Show’s policy.Audio Recording:All of the sessions will be audio recorded. CDs may be purchasedat the Convention Recording Booth at the convention or afterthe convention at www.CHAPonline.com. Personal audio andvideo recorders are prohibited. When picking up CDs, pleaseallow one hour after your last session.Wheeled Vehicles:Strollers and small wheeled items for your shopping convenienceare permitted. Wagons, tricycles, scooters, roller blades, etc., arenot permitted.Book Check:For a small charge, the book check, located at booth #106, willpackage your purchases into sturdy boxes and hold them untilyou are ready to leave for the day. Consult the complex map forthe book check pick-up, where you can load your purchases.Additional Convention Exit:This year attendees may utilize the Vendor Hall exit, locatednear EH2, to exit the building in order to more easily carryparcels to their car.Solicitation Prohibited:No solicitation or distribution of material, polling, or interviewingis permitted at the Farm Show Complex indoors or in the parkingarea during the CHAP Homeschool Convention. Violators willbe prosecuted and asked to leave the convention.CHAP Magazine:The CHAP Magazine, formerly known as the CHAP Newsletterand formerly mailed to convention attendees, is undergoinga transformation to better minister to the homeschoolers ofPennsylvania. The CHAP Magazine will be mailed quarterly tohomeschooling families across Pennsylvania who are membersof CHAP. It contains encouragement and information on eventsand issues pertinent to home educators including articles ofencouragement, academic items for sale, etc. Please see theCHAP membership information inside the front cover. If you donot receive an issue, please contact the CHAP office. Issues aremailed mid-summer, mid-fall, mid-winter, and mid-spring.Visiting Legislators, Candidates, and Public Officials:These public servants are invited to attend the CHAP Conventionas our guests. CHAP does not endorse any candidates for officebut instead uses their attendance at the CHAP Convention toacquaint them with home education as a successful, proveneducational choice. Feel free to introduce yourselves to themand ask them questions! Candidates are not authorized tomake the CHAP Convention a time for general solicitationsor distributing campaign material. In the context of a personalconversation, they may hand out business cards or other smallcards indicating where an interested person could obtain moreinformation or campaign material.Announcing!Support Group Leaders’Town Hall MeetingSaturday, 12:00 noon – 1:00 p.m.Join other support group leaders for dessert and a time to shareideas during a town hall meeting.
