Control technologyWhy choose a Grant Control System?Fuel prices are increasing year on year and thisis having a major impact on home heating costs.Although the price of fuel cannot be changed, steps can be taken to reduce the amount used.Heating controls hugely affect system performance and efficiency. The correct control system not only makes it easier to maintaina more comfortable temperature within the home, but it keepsheating bills and CO 2 emissions down by using less fuel.Grant has a range of individual control solutions that cleverlywork together to enable heating systems to operate at optimalefficiency, ensuring householders get the best out of theirsystem. These include, weather compensation, sequencecontrollers, zone pumps and low loss headers. The systems aresuitable for individual dwellings, properties with several zones, installations with multiple heat sources or a combination ofdifferent heating technologies.Features:• Reduces heating bills• Easier system installation and commissioning• Environmentally friendly• Suitable for systems up to 165kW• Individually controlled heat circuits• Option to switch the system to hot water priority• Allows a number of heating appliances to be combined, including renewable technologies• Provides boiler lead/lag rotation, equalising appliancerunning times• Maximises overall boiler/appliance efficiency• Tailored system concept drawings for both plumbing andwiring available• 5-year product guarantee01380 736920 | www.grantuk.com3

Grant GEO360 weather compensatorSystems without weather compensationWhen air temperatures in the house fall below thesetting on the room thermostat, a signal is sent forthe boiler to fire and warm the house.Unfortunately a disadvantage of this simple arrangement isthat the thermostat only tells the boiler to turn on or off whenthe house is too cold or too hot, respectively. Some systemsare even installed without a room thermostat (boiler interlock),relying solely on individual thermostatic radiator valves. In either case no consideration is given to maintaining the correctflow and return temperatures that enable a boiler to operate incondensing mode or to any external temperature fluctuations.Systems with weather compensationBoiler flow and return temperatures will be monitored andcontrolled, and the system can react promptly to internal andexternal air temperature changes.Autumn• Room thermostat calls for heat on a cool autumn night• A signal is sent for the control to turn the boiler on and warmthe house• Control uses the outdoor temperature to calculate the watertemperature required by the system• Control operates the boiler to allow the system to heat upto that temperature (using less fuel)WinterThe GEO360The GEO360 (GrantEfficiency Optimiser) isa smart control systemcomprising of a controller, two pipe thermostatstogether with an internaland external air sensor, coupled to a mixing valve. With the informationretrieved through the outdoor air sensor (fitted on a north facingwall) the unit can adjust system water temperature to match aheat output closer to the needs of the home. In fact, the systemwill adapt before it even feels too cold or too hot. In periods ofwarm weather the GEO360 will automatically shut the systemdown until it is needed again.Flow and return temperatures can be pre-set on the controlmodule enabling condensing boilers to operate in condensingmode more often, thereby saving fuel and making the systemmore environmentally friendly. The GEO360 monitors weather conditions throughout the yearregardless of the season. Without the control unit, a heatingsystem does not know if it is a cool autumn night or the coldestwinter day. Therefore it works as if it was always the coldest dayof the year and heats the system water to a maximum temperature.Simple system incorporating aGEO360 weather compensator070e Outdoor sensorsited on north facing wallRoomsensorTwin channelprogrammer10 wayjunction boxRoomstatHeating zone• Room thermostat calls for heat on a cold winter day/night• A signal is sent from the control to turn the boiler on and warmthe houseGEO-360eFlowReturn• Control uses the outdoor temperature to calculate the watertemperature required. Grant GES264 sequence controllerBenefits of a sequence controllerThe Grant 264 sequence controller is designed to manage from2 to 4 heat sources. These may include renewable technologiessuch as air source heat pumps and wood pellet boilers oralternatively oil/gas boilers. The controller is able to cope witha mix of fuels all at the same time. This is achieved by using acommon flow sensor and using the heat sources installed tosatisfy the demand. The water temperature may be weather compensated and usedwith or without hot water priority, depending on the pipeworklayout, pumps and motorised valve set up.When controlling up to 4 appliances the controller will recordthe time run for every heat source/boiler and rotate the firingsequence to provide an equal burn time for all units. This willensure that all appliances share the load throughout the year.Depending on the systemdesign and layout it is possibleto include pump overrun.Primary and hot water pumpscan also be controlled bythe controller. When used in conjunctionwith a buffer/thermal store theweather compensation facilitywill be disabled as the storewould be kept at a constanttemperature. The controlrecognises this as a set point temperature and is preset atcommissioning along with a check of all other parameters. When firing takes place each unit will only run when required, depending on the load placed on the system. This ensuresmaximum efficiency and prevents unnecessary firing andwasted energy.Simple low loss header system incorporating2x heat pumps and 2x zonesTwin channelprogrammer10 wayjunction boxRoomstatHeating zone070e outdoor sensorsited on north facing wallNRVFlowReturnFlow2-PortvalveCylinderstatGES 264ReturnConcept drawing only- not site specificASHP 1NRVASHP 2NRVBoilersensorFlowReturn01380 736920 | www.grantuk.com5

Grant Low-loss headersFeeding heating zonesHeader systems are a cost effective way ofinstalling multiple heat sources and feedingmore than one heating zone which have differenttemperature requirements. This is achievedby using a small low loss header known as ahydraulic switcher and a distributor.Depending on the system load, two sizes are available(up to 70kW and up to 165kW @ ∆ t 20 °C flow and return setup temperature). The heating appliances are then connected tothe switcher, which provides an open circuit for the appliancesystem water to feed the heating distribution header. This canbe supplied with 2 to 6 Grant zone pump kit’s for each heatingand hot water circuit, as required. The Grant low loss header provides the installer and thecustomer with a professional installation which is both costeffective to install and run.Technical specificationMaximum flowrateInsulation boxPump unit connectionHydraulic switcher connectionSide connection70kW headerup to 3m 3 /h, 6bar110 x 110 x 508mm (min) -1508mm (max)(depending on model)1” male1 1 /4” male3/4” femaleTechnical specificationMaximum flowrateInsulation boxPump unit connectionHydraulic switcher connectionSide connection165kW headerup to 7m 3 /h, 6bar152 x 152 x 625mm (min) -1625 (max)(depending on model)1 1 /4” male2” male2” maleWall fixingsThe header is fixed to the wall using a bracket system. Grant Zone pump kitsSystem circulationZone pump kits are supplied in three pump sizes –6, 7 and 8 metre head. They also come in either aconstant temperature/variable speed or variabletemperature/variable speed and complete with amixing valve and actuator which works with theGEO360 weather compensator. The kits are designed to sit vertically on the header unit with afully insulated compact black cover which house the circulatingpump and valves. The flow and return valves are colour codedto show flow and return with large dial handles with a thermostatdial, giving a clear indication of heating activity. The variable kits shown below have an additional mixing valvewhich is adjusted by a servomotor to mix the flow temperatureto the heating circuit. The servomotor and valve respond to thesensors fitted to the GEO360 weather compensator this will givethe correct comfort level to the property. A non return valve is alsosupplied to prevent reverse circulation, see installation instructions.Zone pump kits (constant temperature) UnmixedComprisesZone pump, isolator ball valves, temperature gauges andnon-return valveConnection sizes1” and 1 1 /4” BSPDimensions250 x 380 x 190mmMaximum temperature 110˚CApplicationFor power up to 50kW and maximum flow 2150 l/hrFlow6m, 7m or 8m circulating pumpZone pump kits (variable temperature) MixedComprisesZone pump, isolator ball valve, temperature gauges andnon-return valve, 3-port mixing valveConnection sizes1” and 1 1 /4” BSPDimensions250 x 380 x 190mmMaximum temperature 110˚CApplicationFor power up to 35kW and maximum flow 1500 l/hrFlow6m, 7m or 8m circulating pump, 3-way mixing valve forweather compensation01380 736920 | www.grantuk.com7
