Its main goal remains to assist inharmonising radiological education in Europe.Several new initiatives have been launched this year,helping to ensure that especially young radiologistsobtain additional knowledge to enrich their professionaldevelopment.During 2011, ESOR will be delivering complementaryand continuing education to residents and boardcertifiedradiologists through schools, seminars,visiting scholarship programmes, exchangeprogrammes for fellowships, tutorials, and a teachthe-teachersprogramme. In addition the ESOReLibrary is introduced this year with eleven coursesaccessible online aiming to educate trainees, who hadnot the chance to participate in the courses onsite.This growing and hugely appreciated investmentin teaching resources is only possible throughpartnership. All activities are implemented with thesupport of highly esteemed, renowned lecturers,teachers, and tutors, local organisers, volunteerreference training centres, subspecialty and nationalsocieties, as well as valuable industrial partners.A detailed description of the various ESOR 2011activities can be found on the following pages. ESOR 2011 GALEN FOUNDATION COURSESEUROPEAN SCHOOL OF RADIOLOGYGALENFoundationCoursesAimThe GALEN Foundation Courses have been designed to familiarise youngradiologists with the established approaches and most recent achievementsin diagnostic imaging, related to topics across the modalities. Thecourses are aimed at residents in their 1 st , 2 nd or 3 rd year of training inradiology and are primarily assigned to the geographic area of centraland south-eastern Europe. Each programme is divided into organ-orientedlecture series and interactive workshops, offered by internationallyrenowned European faculties. All programmes have been specificallystructured with the trainee radiologist in mind and are meant to dealwith subjects of practical importance; they have an interactive characterto encourage informal and free communication between participants andlecturers.The GALEN Foundation Courses are implemented with great support andpartnership of GE Healthcare Medical Diagnostics South Central Europe.Course programmeThe course programme consists of twelve lectures and nine workshops.The course is accompanied by an online self-assessment test consisting ofmultiple-choice questions.ESR/ESOR reserves the right to amend course programmes.Course languageAll courses are held in English.EligibilityAll foundation courses are intended for residents in their 1 st , 2 nd or3 rd year of training in radiology and participants must be proficient inEnglish. It is located in WesternBulgaria, at the foot of Mount Vitosha in the Sofia Valley that issurrounded by mountains on all sides. Settlement in this area dates backat least 5000 years, making Sofia one of the oldest cities of Europe. Itis the administrative, cultural, economic, and educational centre of thecountry. The city is known for its numerous mineral and thermal springsand has an extensive nightlife with many night clubs, live venues, pubs,mehani (Bulgarian traditional taverns), and restaurants. The capital’smain attraction is probably the ample opportunity for Sofianites to makeuse of the city’s sprawling parklands, many of them densely forested.
