ujuneau County uWilderness Park <strong>of</strong>fers nearly 100 campingsites. Kennedy County Park is north <strong>of</strong> NewLisbon and <strong>of</strong>fers several rustic campingsites. Bass Hollow in south central <strong>Juneau</strong>County is 280 acres, ideal for picnickingor hiking on its five miles <strong>of</strong> walking trails.There are also several private campgroundsthroughout the county.The Lakes<strong>of</strong> <strong>Juneau</strong> CountyIf it’s sun and water fun you seek,<strong>Juneau</strong> County’s lakes region is the place tobe. Petenwell and Castle Rock Lakes arethe second and fourth largest inland body <strong>of</strong>water in <strong>Wisconsin</strong>. The lakes <strong>of</strong>fer numerousbeaches with several public boat-launchingareas. The Castle Rock and Petenwell Damsare unique because they were built on sandand were the first such projects undertakenin the United States. The concrete dams areclassified as “floating type construction” withimbedded cut<strong>of</strong>f walls that penetrate deepinto the glacial sands for anchoring. Theconstruction <strong>of</strong> the lakes was started in 1947and completed in 1950. Both lakes haveplenty <strong>of</strong> room for water skiing, jet skiingand boating. Both lakes <strong>of</strong>fer exceptionalfishing with many species <strong>of</strong> fish. Otherlakes in <strong>Juneau</strong> County include Lake Decorahin Mauston, Eagle’s Nest Flowage and theMeadow Valley Flowage near Camp Douglas,New Lisbon Lake, Sprague-Mather Flowagenear Necedah and several others, all <strong>of</strong>feringtons <strong>of</strong> great fishing and lots <strong>of</strong> water fun!WildlifeFollow nature’s calendar and you’re likely to see many examples <strong>of</strong><strong>Wisconsin</strong>’s wildlife resources in their natural habitat. Karner blue butterflies,eagles, partridge, pheasants, gray wolves, coyotes, fox, whooping cranes,sandhill cranes, and swans are just some <strong>of</strong> the variety that can be seen in<strong>Juneau</strong> County.In northern <strong>Juneau</strong> County is where you will find the Necedah NationalWildlife Refuge, which was established in 1939. This 43,656-acre area islocated about 4 miles west <strong>of</strong> Necedah and is easily accessed from StateHighway 21. The third weekend in September,the Necedah Lions honor the whooping crane with the Whooping CraneFestival. For more information go to www.whooping-crane-festival.comBicycling At Its Best<strong>Juneau</strong> County <strong>of</strong>fers three great rails to trails bicycling experiences.Elroy, once a prominent railroad center, is now the hub <strong>of</strong> these groomedbike trails.Most well known is the “granddaddy <strong>of</strong> all trails” the Elroy-Sparta StateTrail. It is the first <strong>of</strong>ficial rails to trails conversion in the United States.Thirty-two miles in length, the abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroadbed passes through the trail’s most unique features <strong>of</strong> three tunnels, dug byhand in the 1870s.Flashlights and jackets are recommended when walking bikes throughthe tunnels. There are also 33 trestles along with wooden bridges that havebeen planked over and fitted with guardrails for added user protection. Duringthe season, only bicyclists and hikers are allowed on the trail. All motorizedtraffic is prohibited.The 12.5-mile Omaha Trail is between downtown Camp Douglas andElroy. It passes through the Village <strong>of</strong> Hustler on what was once the Chicago& Northwestern Railroad Line. The trail features an 875-foot tunnel.The 400 State Trail was named for the Chicago & Northwesternpassenger train, which traveled the 400 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in400 minutes. The Baraboo River intertwines the entire 22 miles <strong>of</strong> the smoothpacked trail, which connects Reedsburg and Elroy.Along the route <strong>of</strong> wetlands, sandstone bluffs, meadows, and rollingcroplands, you can take a break in the friendly southwestern <strong>Juneau</strong> Countycommunities <strong>of</strong> Wonewoc and Union Center.Trail passes are required. Co-located with Volk Fieldis Camp Williams, which is operated by the Army National Guard. An openhouse is held every two years for the public and affords the opportunityto increase awareness <strong>of</strong> the Volk Field/Camp Williams military facilities.Questions can be directed to 608-427-1210.Camp Williams is the headquarters <strong>of</strong> the United States Property & FiscalOffice (USP&FO) for the State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wisconsin</strong>, as well as the Army NationalGuard’s Consolidated State Maintenance Facility (CSMS). The log building, constructed in 1896 as an<strong>of</strong>ficer’s club for members <strong>of</strong> the National Guard, isnow home to the <strong>Wisconsin</strong> National Guard Museum.Nestled in a park-like setting, the museum—with itsnumerous exhibits—is complemented by an outdoorcollection <strong>of</strong> unique and unusual historic aircraft,tanks, and self-propelled guns.Hardwood Air-to-Ground Weapons Range(R-6904), near Finley, <strong>Wisconsin</strong> in <strong>Juneau</strong> County isone <strong>of</strong> fifteen Air National Guard (ANG) ranges locatedthroughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Theentire facility is under the operational control <strong>of</strong> theAir National Guard as part <strong>of</strong> the Combat ReadinessTraining Center, Volk Field ANG Base. The mission<strong>of</strong> Hardwood Range is to provide training for combataircrews, through presentation <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> realistictarget arrays, for air-to-ground weapons delivery.An open house is held every two years for the publicand affords the opportunity to increase awareness <strong>of</strong>the range and its activities. Ice fishing,snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobilingare popular activities along with sleigh rides. There isalso horseback riding available at Red Ridge Ranch andWoodside Ranch outside <strong>of</strong> Mauston all year round.The Oak Ridge Trail, north <strong>of</strong> New Lisbon onCounty Highway M, <strong>of</strong>fers an excellent cross-countryskiing adventure through seven miles <strong>of</strong> groomedwoodland trails, as does Buckhorn State Park. Wellmarkedand groomed snowmobile trails are locatedthroughout the county and maintained by localsnowmobile clubs. Northern <strong>Juneau</strong> County hasmarked ATV trails.Canoeing and KayakingIn addition to industrial/ business development the<strong>Juneau</strong> County Economic Development Corporationpromotes tourism along with area Chambers <strong>of</strong>Commerce and other groups.
