Effects on nutritional and inflammatory status:a phase II trialRead JA, Beale PJ, Volker DH, Smith N, Childs A, Clark SJ Support Care Cancer. 2007;15:301-307IntroductionProSureClinical StudiesSupportingPublicationsIn a prospective, open-label study by Read and colleagues, patientswith advanced colorectal cancer were given ProSure 3 weeks beforechemotherapy began and for 9 weeks during chemotherapy.ObjectiveTo assess the impact of an eicosapentaenoic acid-containing proteinand energy dense oral nutritional supplement (EPA-ONS) on nutritionaland inflammatory status, quality of life (QOL), plasma phospholipids, andcytokine profile, tolerance of irinotecan-containing chemotherapy and EPA-ONS in patients with advanced colorectal cancer receiving chemotherapy.Study Design• Study Population: Patients with colorectal cancer receivingchemotherapy (n = 23) 20 patients completed 3 weeks; and 15completed 9 weeks• Length of Study: 3-9 weeks• Intervention: 2 servings ProSure (240 mL/ serving)Outcomes• ProSure feeding (average daily intake 408 mL) produced asignificant increase in mean weight (+2.5 kg, P = 0.03) at 3weeks and preserved lean body mass during chemotherapy. Inaddition, there was a significant increase in energy levels (P =0.03) during the study, while quality of life (QOL) was maintained.Study ConclusionsThe researchers concluded that ProSure helped patients withadvanced colorectal cancer receiving chemotherapy to maintainweight, and lean body mass, and possibly improved symptomcontrol, nutritional status and QOL. Dietary counseling improvedcompliance with ProSure. Inflammation, measured by C-reactiveprotein, was stabilized.EPA -eicosapentaenoic acidMean values (SD)*P values are for baseline vs timepoint value; NS, not significant
