259-272 <strong>hpc</strong> 9/26/06 8:18 AM Page 271SILICON VALLEYSPORTS & ENTERTAINMENTSilicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVS&E) was created to provide a single resource forbusiness partners to utilize when planning their sports and event relationships by taking full advantageof the expertise and capabilities involving all or part of the San Jose Sharks business operations.This includes marketing, corporate partnership sales management, broadcast, ticket sales,event presentation, <strong>com</strong>munity programs, media relations, advertising, facilities, promotions, publishing,merchandising and additional areas of the organization.This division of the <strong>com</strong>pany, created in the summer of 2000, oversees all business operationsaspects of the San Jose Sharks, HP Pavilion at San Jose and select HP Pavilion events. In addition,SVS&E manages all or parts of Logitech Ice at San Jose (the Sharks training and public skatingfacility), Sharks Ice at Fremont, the SAP Open tennis tournament (ATP Tour Tennis), the AmericanHockey League’s Worcester Sharks (the Sharks top development affiliate) as well as select HPPavilion events such as Fight Night at the Tank (professional boxing), Strike Force Mixed MartialArts and the National Lacrosse League’s San Jose Stealth.Current existing entities utilizing the experience and services of SVS&E include the GoldenBaseball League and the Canary Foundation Grand Prix of San Jose presented by Taylor Woodrow,which hosted its second event in downtown San Jose in July 2006 and will continue the event in2007, the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League and the San Francisco Dragons of theMajor Lacrosse League.SVS&E previously operated Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes, which moved toHouston in 2005, from 2000-02, including their first MLS Championship season in 2001, and the SiebelClassic, a senior PGA tour event.Benefits of a business arrangement with SVS&E allow the San Jose Sharks and HP PavilionManagement to <strong>com</strong>bine existing marketing programs, sales resources and contacts to createmore efficient and meaningful business partnerships. SVS&E allows the organization to providefully integrated advertising/corporate partnership packages that reach the multiple demographicsegments represented in Silicon Valley.Another option for business partners, SVS&E Publishing, was created in 2001. SVS&EPublishing, a full-service publishing division, handles a majority of the design, editorial and printingneeds for most of the SVS&E properties. In addition, SVS&E Publishing produces publications fornumerous outside clients including the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, Arizona Sun Dogs ofthe Central Hockey League and the Canary Foundation Grand Prix of San Jose Presented by TaylorWoodrow.In 2003, SVS&E Merchandise was added to the SVS&E family. SVS&E Merchandise is an industryleader and innovator in all things associated with building a brand. Their client list includesBrocade, 49ers Foundation, SAVVIS, The Works London, Golden Baseball League, the CanaryFoundation, Challenge Day, Lockheed Martin, Oakland Raiders and After School All-Stars. Servicesprovided include event merchandise marketing and management, online stores and fulfillment, VIPgifts, motivational/recognition programs and branded merchandise.SVS&E was a key element in the 2002 purchase of the organization and its assets from previousOwner George Gund III by a local ownership group, San Jose Sports & Entertainment Enterprises(SJSEE), led by current President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison.In 2001, the organization entered into a naming rights rebranding with Compaq ComputerCorporation and the City of San Jose, ensuring that the Sharks will remain in San Jose for the foreseeablefuture and that the facility will receive the necessary amenities, upgrades and improvementsits patrons have <strong>com</strong>e to expect and enjoy. The agreement, which was amended in 2002 toreflect the subsequent merger between Compaq and HP, runs through 2015 and provided a newname to Northern California’s premier sports and entertainment venue.Business arrangements similar to SVS&E are not un<strong>com</strong>mon in the sports and arena managementindustry. Other examples of this type of business arrangement include Orca Bay Sports &Entertainment in Vancouver which oversees the management of the Vancouver Canucks of the <strong>NHL</strong>and GM Place; Kroenke Sports Enterprises in Colorado which manages the NBA’s Denver Nuggets,the Colorado Avalanche of the <strong>NHL</strong> and the Pepsi Center; and Palace Sports & Entertainment inDetroit which operates the NBA’s Detroit Pistons, the Palace of Auburn Hills as well as the TampaBay Lightning of the <strong>NHL</strong> which plays its games in Tampa, Fla.GENERAL2006-07 SAN JOSE SHARKS ORGANIZATION GUIDE 271
