Your ideas should be clear, specific, and persuasive.Part II (1250 words): Research ProposalDescribe your area <strong>of</strong> specialization with a specific researchproposal for your dissertation. It is expected that your ideas willevolve when you are here, but the committee will use this proposalto assess your ability to conceptualize a research plan.Your proposal should succinctly describe a research question,articulate why it is important to the field <strong>of</strong> architecture, demonstratean understanding <strong>of</strong> the relevant literature and gaps incurrent knowledge, and identify several research methods thatcan be applied to the problem.You should also identify a prospective major advisor fromthe <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> and/or other faculty withwhom you would like to work. We strongly recommend thatapplicants contact the faculty member(s) with whom they aremost interested in working with well in advance <strong>of</strong> submittingtheir application, since the department must establish prior toadmission, a sufficient goodness-<strong>of</strong>-fit between the scholarlygoals and aspirations <strong>of</strong> a student and the interests andavailability <strong>of</strong> at least one faculty member who will serve as theapplicant’s provisional major advisor. Faculty research pr<strong>of</strong>ilesmay be found on the department website.2. PORTFOLIO: CREATIVE AND SCHOLARLY WORKThe portfolio must be bound in a single protective binder orcover and must not exceed 9 1/2” x 12” x 3”. Do not sendslides, disks or CDs, any unbound work, or drawings in tubes.The portfolio should be clearly organized, easy to understand,and representative <strong>of</strong> the applicant’s care with visual materials.Include a contact page with the applicant’s name, mailingaddress, telephone, and email address.Creative work (25 pages max) should show design projectsand cite your contribution in collaborative work. The portfolioshould include representative examples <strong>of</strong> your pr<strong>of</strong>essionalwork completed since obtaining your pr<strong>of</strong>essional degree anddescribe the major issues explored in the projects and designcriteria developed in response to these issues. Include at leastone writing example whch should clearly demonstrate criticalthinking, research, and writing abilities.Portfolios will be returned only if specifically requested andprovided with a suitably sized, self-addressed stamped envelope.Use US postage in the form <strong>of</strong> stamps only; no meteredor foreign postage will be accepted. For foreign address return,a money order covering the estimated cost is appropriate.Postage rate increases <strong>of</strong>ten occur during the admissionmonths, so include extra postage over and above the currentrate to cover this potential additional charge.3. THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATIONProvide a copy <strong>of</strong> the enclosed Letter <strong>of</strong> Recommendationform to each recommender after you have filled in the applicantinformation on the top <strong>of</strong> the form. Two <strong>of</strong> the three<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> - <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>recommendation letters are required from academic referees.Ask your recommenders to seal and sign over the seal, thenmail the letters directly to the <strong>Architecture</strong> <strong>Department</strong> by thedeadline.4. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTSTwo copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts for all post secondary highschool educational institutions attended (whether or not a degreewas earned). If a degree was earned, the transcript mustshow this. One set should be sent to the Office <strong>of</strong> Admissionsand one to the department. (See Section VI for addresses.)Foreign transcripts require <strong>of</strong>ficial English translation.5. GRE - GRADUATE RECORD EXAMAll applicants must submit GRE scores. GRE scores are validfor 5 years. There is no minimum required score.6. TOEFL - TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGEApplicants from non-English speaking countries must submitTOEFL scores. Minimum scores for admission to all programs<strong>of</strong> the department are a composite score <strong>of</strong> 575 (paper based),or 90 (Internet based). Applicants may submit scores for theInternational English Language Testing System (IELTS) examfor which the minimum score is 7 on a 9 point scale. Studentsare not admitted in architecture courses until they haveachieved the minimum competency in English.7. VITAEPrepare a Vitae (or Resume) that documents your education,pr<strong>of</strong>essional work, teaching experience, work history, awards,scholarship, publications, relevant volunteer/public serviceactivities. Clear attributions are required for all collaborativeactivities.8. GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPSAll PhD candidates must complete a Graduate Fellowshipapplication as part <strong>of</strong> the admissions process regardless <strong>of</strong>the candidate’s financial resources. The application is includedwith this packet. Self-supporting PhD students (i.e., those whopay their own tuition) may be <strong>of</strong>fered Graduate Fellowshipsupon review <strong>of</strong> GTF application, since this is considered avaluable part <strong>of</strong> the educational process.VIII. INTERVIEWSAs part <strong>of</strong> the admissions process, finalists for admission willbe invited to a departmental interview during which the candidatewill give a public presentation, participate in studio reviewsand classes, and meet with the PhD Committee and<strong>Department</strong> administration. Interviews will take place in mid-February. The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> will cover transportationand lodging.


PhDPost Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Graduate ProgramsIX. FUNDINGIncoming doctoral students will receive up to four years <strong>of</strong>tuition and fee waivers, a stipend and health insurance throughGraduate Teaching and Research Fellowships contingent uponsuccessful progress and performance in the program. Theseappointments, which include a tuition waiver and monthlystipend ranging from 0.2 to .49 FTE employment, are providedthrough the department, university and individual facultymembers, typically from research grants and contracts. Theresult <strong>of</strong> this strategy has several benefits: it provides valuableskills in teaching and research as part <strong>of</strong> the student’s program<strong>of</strong> study; it introduces students to the expected norm for facultyloads at research universities; collaboration with faculty willassist the department in curricular innovation and researchdevelopment. Typical Graduate Fellowship assignments willinclude: teaching one term in a lower division studio, teachingone term <strong>of</strong> specialized instruction in a large lecture or seminarrelated to the program <strong>of</strong> study, and one term for research,working with a faculty advisor.<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Architecture</strong> - <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>IX. TYPICAL COURSE OF STUDYThe chart below shows the expected time lines and sequencefor fulfilling the minimum course <strong>of</strong> study requirements.Students may take additional courses or credits as desired,or as needed to meet fulltime status requirements. The exactsequence <strong>of</strong> courses taken will depend on the program <strong>of</strong>study <strong>of</strong> each student and course availability. The minimumresidency requirement is two years, until the student hasadvanced to candidacy.The <strong>University</strong> is set up on the quarter system with a 10-week academic terms.
