PRESIDENT’SMESSAGEOver the past several years,we’ve been counting down to2014, Pennsylvania College ofTechnology’s centennial year. As 2013draws to a close, that countdown is almostover. In January, we will kick off a yearof celebration. Events will honor ourfounders, our students, our employees, our alumni and our community. Allhave helped to build the first 100 yearsof our history: a legacy that is worthy ofreflection and commemoration.Over a century, we have grown. As I think back to the founders of ourinstitution, I see a clear picture of theirmission and our vision. Their success – inretraining disabled World War I veteransfor new roles, preparing the unemployedof the Great Depression for jobs, andserving GI Bill-supported veterans – isour inheritance. We proudly accept thecontinuing commitment to transformlives by providing academic and personalsupport to students and by taking risks andmaking bold decisions that will strengthenour campus and our community. From our earliest days, the institutionhas helped to advance new technology.Students have reaped the benefit ofhands-on experience with industrystandardequipment since a one-of-a-kindindustrial arts shop opened in the newWilliamsport High School (now KlumpAcademic Center) in 1914, and throughthe computer age, when we piloted some ofthe region’s first computer courses in 1963and a first-of-its-kind computer-integratedmanufacturing demonstration in 1990.In 1999, we made the bold decisionto accept the management role for thestate’s new Workforce and EconomicDevelopment Network (WEDnetPA).Through a network of 30 educationalproviders, the program continues toadminister Guaranteed Free Training tocompanies; in April, WEDnetPA reacheda milestone, training its 1 millionthemployee. After a long history as a “commuter”campus, we entered a new era as aresidential campus offering on-campushousing to students in 1997. In 2012-13,more than 1,700 students lived on campus, and their satisfaction with on-campusliving was at its highest level in 15 years. We continued to enrich our students’experience in Fall 2011 when we beganrequiring a First Year Experience courseto help new students navigate the firstyear and build a foundation for successthroughout their college careers. Ourefforts are paying off. The number ofreferrals from concerned faculty membersabout first-year students has dropped 14percent since the FYE requirement wasintroduced; fall-to-spring retention rates offirst-year students – a concern for collegesnationwide – has increased; and first-yearGPAs are rising. Now, as in our formative years, weremain responsive to business andindustry, to community needs, toworkforce needs, and to transforming thelives of the individuals who make up ourstudent body.Throughout history, when warsdistracted us, when economic challengesmounted, when our own survival in thesponsorship crisis was in doubt, we neverwavered. We moved forward and embracednew opportunities – from developingthe nationally acclaimed “WilliamsportPlan” to put the unemployed back to workin the 1930s, to being among the first inthe nation to adapt our programs to meetWorld War II production needs, to forginga new affiliation with Penn State whenour community college sponsorship wasthreatened.“We must continueour mission totransform livesthrough education.”When I look back over time, I see thisinstitution leading the way as a technicalinstitute, as a community college, andtoday as a college with a unique andspecial mission to provide the mostadvanced technology-based educationreinforced with general educationcourse work that prepares our graduatesto advance into leadership roles in theworkplace and in the community.Over our first 100 years, we becamePennsylvania’s premier technical college. Now, we focus on building upon ourheritage to secure our position as anational leader in applied technologyeducation.2 One College Avenue

2012-13FUNDINGTo honor our legacy, we must continueto build upon the foundation set byfaculty, administrators, staff, students, andour community and industry partners. We must continue our bold leadershipby charting a new course reflectingchanging societal and employmentrealities. We must continue our missionto transform lives through education anda unique, holistic college experience thatinspires students to achieve full, rich andmeaningful lives. As we mark our first century as a leaderin higher education – ranked by U.S.News & World Report’s “Best Colleges”as among the top 10 public regionalcolleges in the north, we will expand ourwork with two-year colleges, easing thetransfer into Penn College’s bachelordegreemajors. We will expand distancelearningofferings, which allow studentswith associate degrees to complete thefinal two years of a baccalaureate degreeonline. We will introduce contemporarytechnology programs – like mechatronics, which is in high demand in natural gasand other industries – and continue toupdate majors such as Web and interactivemedia, in order to keep pace with evolvingindustry trends. We will do our part tomake a positive impact on the future, branding Williamsport as a college townand creating a sound legacy as we celebratea very proud past.Operating Budget .....................................................$97,902,601State Appropriation................................................ $13,584,000Same level as prior yearRestricted FundsGrants, contracts and restricted donations....................$16,089,605Auxiliary Funds........................................................... $26,917,478Tuition & FeesPennsylvania residentsTuition per credit hour...................................................................... $400Tuition and fees per credit hour .....................................................$479Annual tuition and fees ............................................................... $14,370based on 15 credits per semester5.54-percent increase over prior yearOut-of-state residentsTuition per credit hour.......................................................................$521Tuition and fees per credit hour .................................................... $600Annual tuition and fees ...............................................................$18,000based on 15 credits per semesterfees includePer-credit-hour technology fee...........................................................$16Per-credit-hour capital fee................................................................... $47Per-credit-hour laboratory fee............................................................ $36does not apply to all classesPer-credit-hour student activity fee ..................................................$11Per-credit-hour health service fee........................................................$5DonationsPenn College and the Penn College Foundation received in-kinddonations of equipment, technology, materials and supplies frombusiness and industry for instructional purposes valued at $651,527and cash donations totaling $969,708 for a total of $1,621,235.Donors included 758 alumni and 450 employees, who togethercontributed $381,582.Winter 2013 3

Parkes, to the currentPennsylvania College of Technologypresident, Davie Jane Gilmour. The book shares information fromthe Roger and Peggy Madigan LibraryArchives and from videotaped oral historyinterviews conducted by Tom Speicher,writer/video editor, and Daniel J. Doyle, professor emeritus and Master Teacher.Archived, audiotaped interviews, conducted with Parkes nearly a half-centuryago, revealed previously unpublished detailsabout the institution’s formative years.“We got our start in the coal bins, in thebasement of the present Klump center,”he said. From its start as a vocational programof the Williamsport Area School District(1914-41) through years as a technicalinstitute (1941-65) and communitycollege (1965-89) to present status as aspecial mission affiliate of Penn State, theinstitution was led by men and womenwith diverse backgrounds and interests.Centennial Project Documents‘Legacy of Leaders’“Each of these individualswas there at the righttime for this institution.”Over the course of the last century, theleaders elevated this unique institutionof higher learning from its roots as a localadult-education program to a position ofnational acclaim. Each leader paved a newpath and encouraged new ways of thinkingabout the future. In “Legacy of Leaders,” Robert G.Bowers, professor emeritus, MasterTeacher and former executive assistant forinternal affairs, described the diversity ofleaders who followed Parkes: “Kenny Carl, father. Bill Feddersen, enabled transitionto a full community college. Bob Breuder, builder and enabler of Pennsylvania StateUniversity relationship. Insight and InspirationVoices From the Alumni/Faculty Centennial Classby Tom Wilson, writer/editor-PCTodayAs Pennsylvania College ofTechnology nears 100 years asa leader in applied technologyeducation, who better to heraldthe 2014 milestone than a uniquegroup of committed participants:faculty who are also among theinstitution’s proudest graduates?Retired food and hospitality faculty member Ann R. Miglio inspired Suzann L. Mayer, assistant professor of baking & pastry arts, to enter the field. Miglio accepted theMaster Teacher Award in 1987, flanked by Excellence in Teaching Award winnersJames C. Pivirotto, left, and Ronald L. Rock. They have returned to inspire students, bringing private-sector wisdom and anabiding appreciation for the education theynow impart to a new generation. The transition can be as surreal as it ishumbling, said Carl J. Bower Jr., especiallywhen one’s predecessor casts a longshadow. The 1993 landscape/nurserytechnology alumnus succeeded RichardJ. Weilminster, a 34-year veteran of thehorticulture faculty and the college’s 1986Master Teacher. As if it wasn’t intimidatingenough to be interviewed by his one-timeprofessors, Bower, once hired, foundhimself behind Weilminster’s former desk.“I just sat there. I can’t even rememberhow long,” he said. “It took a while for it tosink in.”While Bower credits everyone in thedepartment, “Rich – he lets you call himthat once you graduate – inspired me themost and is the reason I am here today,”he said. “He was a father figure to so manyof his students – and I was no exception.Rich was hard on you and, at the time, youmight have thought he was too hard. Butafter you graduated, or even before, yousaid to yourself, ‘He only did that becausehe cared.’”Bower believes his alumni statusenhances his teaching ability, allowinghim to bridge the past and future.“Students ask why certain trees lookthe way they do or why beds are plantedhow they are, and having that historymakes it easy to tell them,” he said. “I stillremember the trees I planted while I wasa student, and it’s nice to remind currentstudents that, when they return in 10 or15 years and see projects they were a partof, they will feel that same pride. Knowingyou are a part of making a change in anylandscape, at school or in the workforce, isa very satisfying feeling.”Bower said a former student now doingpostgraduate work elsewhere recently toldFacebook friends he has a difficult time“learning” from a professor without fieldexperience.“That, to me, is what it’s like movingfrom student to teacher,” Bower said. “Yourealize what you need to do for the studentbecause you have been there … and to somany places in-between.”Perhaps few understand those “places”as well as Thomas A. Zimmerman, associate professor of psychology, a generalstudies student at Williamsport AreaCommunity College in the mid-’60s. Fatetook him everywhere thereafter – degreesfrom Lycoming College and BucknellUniversity, naval service and employmentin the mental-health field – until he joinedthe full-time faculty in 1984.His student experience was no lessvaried. He flirted with literature and mathand allied himself with instructors allalong his wandering journey. Some madeacademic sense, such as friendships withHugh MacMullan and Richard Sweeneyin the English department; Robert Kissell, who taught history and government; andPaul Feng in psychology. Others weremore nebulous, as when Bill Morris offeredhim a ride to his part-time job.“He asked me questions about me andmade me realize the shared participationin this endeavor.” Zimmerman said Morriscounseled him to find balance betweenwork and play, to pace himself for the longhaul. “Here was a math instructor givingme advice; he gave me a lift, but he made ameaningful impact.”8 One College Avenue

He finds today’s students moreinquisitive than those of his generation andcherishes the surprises that wait atthe off-ramp of classroom detours.“You have an outline of where you wantto go in a particular class; then you’resuddenly onto this dialogue that you didn’texpect,” Zimmerman said. “It reminds meof my parents, who introduced us to newthings, then stepped back and asked, ‘Well, what did you think?’”Socratic exchanges were routine forhis faculty heroes, during his student daysand after he became their colleague. ToZimmerman, the college will forever be“a place where the emphasis is on goodteaching.”His gold standard is an erudite group ofWACC professors who quickly proved thathands-on education and academic rigorcould walk hand-in-hand. Their names areamong the most revered in campus history, recipients of what is now the Veronica M.Muzic Master Teacher Award: Daniel J.Doyle, Ned S. Coates, Peter B. Dumanisand James E. Logue. Doyle taught historyand sociology; the other three, English.(Muzic, the pole star who has accuratelyguided so many students, is a formerEnglish professor, academic vice presidentand provost.)“Jim, particularly, elevated the school tosomething akin to academic sophisticationand professionalism. It was an auspiciousend to the notion we were anything but a‘real’ college, the idea that all academicsare elitists,” Zimmerman recalled. “It wasan affirmation of a college education beingavailable to everyone, of telling students,‘It’s not about your background.’”The possibilities and accessibilityof community college were embracedby Daniel L. Brooks, instructor ofarchitectural technology, who holds twodiplomas from the institution: an associatedegree in architectural technology (1980,WACC) and a bachelor’s in residentialconstruction technology and management(2008, Penn College).“The whole technology piece is differentnow, revolutionizing everything we do,and the facilities are definitely different,”he said. “But students today have the sametypes of goals. Many, then and now, comefrom humble circumstances – it’s a strugglefor their families. This college representsreal opportunity for them, as it did for me.”The faculty triumvirate of Joseph G.Mark, Lloyd C. Cotner and William H.Ealer “certainly gave us a core educationthat was well-respected. I applied to 12architecture schools and was accepted atevery one,” said Brooks, who ultimatelychose the University of Maryland. “All ofthem had a clear realization of what wewere learning here.”“Joe Mark was an incredible influence, showing that extra encouragement, thatinterest in my personal life,” he said. “I seethat with my colleagues, reaching out tostudents. It’s not just ‘I gave a satisfyinglecture, now I’ll give a test.’ There’ssomething about the human contact.”Brooks said that “Penn Collegeapproach” pervades campus, from theclassroom to the dining hall.“The women on the pizza line at PennCentral seem to know every student byname. No, not just their names, but whatthey like to do and what’s going on in theirlives. They’ll ask, ‘Did you get your carfixed?’ or ‘How is the skateboarding?’ It’samazing how many people here go outof their way to make these connectionsmatter.”“From the time I was a student, Iwanted to teach here,” Brooks said. “Ican remember walking behind the ACC,thinking, ‘I really like it here.’ Some placesjust sort of click. I enjoyed my time atMaryland, but it didn’t have that ‘home’feel to it.”Like Zimmerman, he recognizes therigor of a Penn College education, andknows that the institution – even withits working-class roots and open-dooradmission policy – isn’t a consolationprize for students who can’t cut itsomewhere else.“I’m so impressed with this year’scrop of freshmen,” he said. “I’m teachingstudents that could go anywhere elsefor their education, but they chosePenn College.” »“He was a father figure toso many of his students –and I was no exception.”Rich WeilminsterJames LogueJoseph MarkWinter 2013 9

Bill EalerBill MorrisVictor MichaelIn the School of Business & Hospitality, alumnus Chef Charles R. Niedermyer IIteaches alongside many of the facultywho nurtured his craft. After receivinga baking and pastry arts degree in 2000,he worked in three Ritz hotels, two finediningrestaurants and a bakery beforereturning as a baking and pastry arts/culinary arts instructor in 2005. (He alsoearned a bachelor’s degree in technologymanagement in 2012.)“The process of moving from student tofaculty, however, with former instructorswho were now my colleagues, offered someunique challenges,” Niedermyer said.Challenges – with a side of respect.“They taught me a tremendous amountand I owe them a lot,” he said. “ChefMonica Lanczak is a big inspiration. Shehas had a very successful, colorful careerand is really dedicated to her students.I won’t ever stop looking up to her.”Unlike Brooks, who dreamed a dreamand made it happen, Niedermyer neverplanned on coming back.“I wanted to be the best pastry chefI could be,” a notion sidetracked by acall from his alma mater.“I’ve been handed one of the mostrewarding and challenging positionsI’ve ever been in, trying to transfer myindustry knowledge to student learning,”he said. “To take the expectations, refining this and improving that. It’s a bigresponsibility.” He’s struck by how younghis students are, noting that they were ingrade school on Sept. 11, 2001, while hewas “in Jacksonville, Fla., in the middleof 50 baguettes.”“It’s a reminder that I’m not 18anymore, that they’re from a differentgeneration and that I have an obligation tothem,” he said. “I’m their instructor, butI’m also a life and career adviser, wantingthem to develop as community-mindedcitizens, with a concern for themselvesand a concern for their neighbors. It’s a lotto absorb … but it’s very hard to come towork every day and not smile.”The school also boasts alumna SuzannL. Mayer among its award-winning faculty– but her career was headed in a differentdirection when the hospitality bug bit.Among her influences? No less thanDavie Jane Gilmour, now Penn Collegepresident, and Ann R. Miglio, whosefaculty leadership helped bring the schoolinto prominence.“When I came to WACC, I was goingto enroll in the word-processing programbecause it was the big thing in the early1980s,” said Mayer, an assistant professorof baking and pastry arts/culinary arts.“I took part in a program through CareerExplorations, met Ann Miglio in the foodand hospitality program, and was hooked.”Among the earliest transfer students was Thomas A. Zimmerman, Class of 1967, who transferred Williamsport Area Community Collegecredits to earn additional degrees and later joined the college faculty. His comments were shown in the 1969-70 WACC catalog.10 One College Avenue

Chalmer Van HornMiglio, who taught at the college fromAugust 1978 to May 1993, was selected asa Master Teacher in 1987.“Her expertise and teaching styleinspired me to become a lifelonglearner and explore all aspects of theindustry,” Mayer added. “When I becamecoordinator of the Food and HospitalityProgram, Davie Jane became my mentorand guide. She taught me how to problemsolveand motivate others.“Penn College changed my life –and the lives of my children and, now, grandchildren.”Change of a technological sort isreflected in the college’s drafting area, where painstakingly hand-rendered pencildrawings have been replaced by the latestin desktop tools.David A. Probst, assistant professorof drafting and computer-aided design, fondly remembers those who taught himat WACC: Chris Radke, Dale R. Straub,Jackie E. Welliver and Chalmer Van Horn.Van Horn, a tireless visitor to alumnievents and reunions, is one of the fewinstructors whose career touched all threeinstitutions embodied by the centennial.“We had classes in the old trolleybuilding with cubicles along the outerperimeter that had related courses,” Probstsaid. “If someone opened the windows atthe top of the building, the wind wouldblow dirt, feathers and whatever else …onto the drafting tables and your drawings. And we were graded for how clean ourdrawings were!“Good times and great teachers,” headded. “Oh, and we had a ‘stockroom’where we went to get our drafting paper, pencils, tape, etc., and to have blueprintsmade. Times have changed!”Todd S. Woodling, who teaches ina major that didn’t even exist when hewas a student – building automationtechnology – is no stranger to those daysof compromised space. But the 1982electronics alumnus said students didn’tfeel shortchanged.“We had scopes; we had a tool room,”he said. “The labs were equipped, and theequipment worked.” That has carried over,as industry leaders such as Honeywelland Automated Logic donated enoughcontrollers that Woodling’s students don’thave to share. What is shared is the same connectionbetween teaching and learning thatWoodling experienced. In his case, it waswith Victor A. Michael, a 1991 MasterTeacher in electronics technology, whoconvinced him to leave industry andpursue a bachelor’s degree at The Collegeof New Jersey, and David C. Johnson.“Dave changed the way I think. Hetaught me discipline; knowing how todo things right the first time, getting mypriorities straight and setting me up for thereal world,” Woodling said. “He was tough, but I came to appreciate it.”Such memories will continuethroughout the centennial year, and asZimmerman noted, with good reason:“Whether we admit it or not, everybody’sgot a story. The best way to get someone’sattention isn’t to scare the hell out of them,it’s to bring in their human side. Theirstory is what makes them interesting;it makes them who they are.” ■The city’s trolleybarn would becomethe headquarters forWilliamsport TechnicalInstitute and hostedclasses until it wasrazed in the 1980s.Winter 2013 11

Sharing a Wealth of KnowledgeKenneth C. Kuhns, assistant professorof electricaltechnologies/occupations,oversees the workof a student inthe on-site powergeneration majoras he troubleshootsa commercialgenerator at I-TEC(InternationalTechnical Electric& Construction)in Montoursville.I first learned of the college in 1972 when I was asenior at Littlestown High School, which is in AdamsCounty. Jack Hill, my industrial arts teacher, saidthere was a community college in Williamsport thatwould be a good fit for me as he encouraged meto continue my education. He said I needed to giveit serious consideration. What he didn’t know wasthat I had already signed up in a delayed enlistmentprogram in the U.S. Air Force. Four years later, afterbeing discharged in December of 1976, I enrolledat Williamsport Area Community College, solely onJack’s recommendation. At the time, I lacked confidence in my academicabilities and truly believed that I wasn’t collegematerial. I reinforced my suspicions by testingpoorly in all areas of the college’s placement test.Luckily for me, after reviewing my dismal scores,Veronica Muzic encouraged me that day not toworry. She told me to go back home to Littlestown,to have a good holiday break and to come back inJanuary when we would fix these problems. To mysurprise, I learned over the next few years that oneof the services that the college provided then andstill does today is the opportunity for students torelearn those all-important basic skills in reading, writing and math … along with providing a degreethat works. After earning an associate degree in electronicsin 1979, I transferred to Penn State, where Igraduated with a degree in electrical engineeringin 1983. Looking back on this sequence of events,I suspect that Jack Hill knew that this collegewould offer the best opportunity for me to realizethe potential that he had seen in me back in highschool. The faculty and staff that I worked withas a student at WACC certainly were dedicated tobringing out the best in each individual. I especiallyremember the positive influence of Veronica Muzic,Peter Dumanis, Ned Coates, Richard Sweeney,Robert Bowers, Vic Michaels, Bob Mix and NormanBriggs. From them, I learned the importance ofbeing able to communicate effectively throughboth the written and the spoken word, having astrong foundation in mathematics, and developing astrong foundational understanding of electrical andelectronic theory. After college, I worked in industry as a microwaveengineer for eight years and then had anopportunity to teach part time at the college inthe spring of 1990. After one semester in theclassroom, I realized that I wanted to returnto the college as a full-time faculty member tooffer to future students the opportunity to betterthemselves and work toward that degree thatworks. Fortunately for me, I got that chance andbecame a full-time-faculty member in the Fall1990 semester, around the same time the collegebecame Pennsylvania College of Technology.Looking back on all of the work experiences thatI have had since graduating from high school in1972, I can say working at the college as a facultymember and being an alumnus from here have beenthe most rewarding and most fulfilling position Ihave ever held. As a faculty member, I aspire eachday to influence the students with whom I work thesame way that those faculty I mentioned influencedme. It is largely because of my interactions withthem and their dedication to and concern for methat I am where I am today. I would like to think thatI, too, will be remembered as having contributed tohelping students experience their dreams of beingthe best that they can be, just as others helped mein the late ’70s.- Kenneth C.
