I am disabledand am raising five children so therewas no money for these tests. I amalso diabetic and I go without insulinsometimes because I cannot afford it.My doctor reassured me, ‘Don’t youworry, we’ll figure it out.’ He called allover to find care for me; one hospitalwanted $2,000 up front and I couldnot afford it. He finally called St Mary’sand then called me back cheering,“We found a place – you can go to StMary’s!”I was so scared that I had somethingreally wrong and I was treated so nice. Ithappens sometimes, that when you can’tpay you get treated poorly, but when Icame to St. Mary’s they didn’t care thatI didn’t have the money—they only caredabout me. O ur donors really say it all…Sue Bellin and Carol and Isidore KwaterskiCarol and Isidore (Ise) Kwaterski have been associated with St. Mary’s Hospitalfor more than a generation. Carol served on the first Friends Board of theHospital. Ise, now retired from the trucking industry, still remembers walking tothe hospital when he was just a boy, serving at Mass in the old hospital chapel.“We’ve given to many charities, but St. Mary’s has been a little closer to ourhearts. If it weren’t for St. Mary’s Hospital, I wouldn’t be here today,” he asserts, adding, “I was also blessed with good doctors.”Ise’s wife, Carol, remains a treasured supporter who helped keep St. Mary’s in thefamily by recommending that her daughter join the Friends Board. “I knew ourdaughter Susan would be a good choice, and was happy to see her follow in myfootsteps at St. Mary’s Hospital.”Drs. Gordon Haugan and Mary MeyerDrs. Gordon Haugan and Mary Meyer were both youngpediatricians when they began their careers at St. Mary’s Hospital. Now celebrating their 25th anniversary together, they still recalltheir early years at the hospital. “I felt embraced by the nursing staffwhen I came to St. Mary’s—and you could just feel the genuinenessand dedication here,” says Dr. Meyer, adding, “The religiousfoundation of the hospital is very meaningful to us as well.” Dr.Haugan adds, “St. Mary’s gives so much back to the community—you can’t help but feel the sense of mission. I am grateful to thehospital, and I am very comfortable having made a long-termplanned gift that we put into place for St. Mary’s some years ago. We’re confident that our donations are always used with care. Weknow St. Mary’s will be good stewards of our planned gift long afterwe are gone.”Madeline and Bob Harlan“Ever since I trained as a nurse in a small Iowa hospital, I have beeninspired by the compassion and dedication of the Hospital Sisters,” saysMadeline Harlan. “We’ve had some very proud and gratifying momentsat St. Mary’s—during the Lambeau Field Inaugural Ball for the hospitalendowment, at Toast of the Town dinners, and at fund-raising rallies forthe new ER. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we’ve raisedcharitable dollars that helped the hospital build a new, state-of-the-artEmergency Department to serve our patients. But for me personally, the most moving moment was seeing the results of all that effort firsthand—inmy own family, as I watched the caring staff at St. Mary’s liftBob from sickness back to health just a few years ago. In my opinion, there couldn’t be a worthier charitable cause right now thanSt. Mary’s—our West Side hospital.”

P rayer of St. Francis of AssisiLord, make me an instrument of thy peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;where there is sadness, joy.O Divine Master, grant that I may not somuch seek to be consoled as to console;to be understood as to understand;to be loved as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.addressweb sitephonetoll free1726 Shawano AvenueGreen Bay, WI 54303www.stmgb.org920.498.4200800.666.5606Cert no.
