Get ready for the 2012 Library Summer Reading

Challenge!

The theme for this year will be Story Lab, a celebration of stories and the

power of your imagination.

This summer it will be up to the Story Lab kids to save Aberdeen by boosting

its imagination and seeking out stories for everyone to share. How? By taking

part in the Reading Challenge and trying to read 6 books over the summer. You

will collect stickers and incentives as you work through the three stages of the

Challenge to create a fully functioning laboratory where you can read, collect,

share, create and transmit stories.

Story Lab will exist virtually in its own website environment which will go live

before the summer holidays.

The illustrator for the 2012 challenge is Steve May. So, while you are waiting

for it all to begin, you can check out his work in the Michael Lawrence ‘Jiggy

McCue’ books and Jeremy Strong’s ‘Cartoon Kid’.

Active Schools

At Active Schools Aberdeen we are

responsible for implementing activities

in schools and the local community

to help encourage youngsters to

participate in sports. This summer,

local youngsters can become active jet

setters with our successful ‘Pas-Sport’

scheme. This fun initiative will give

children the opportunity to take part in

various activities during the holidays.

The programme will get kids involved

in a host of sporting sessions held at

various Sport Aberdeen Venues

through the city this summer. The

fun activities will not only keep kids

amused during the summer holidays,

but will also encourage them to get

into the spirit of this year’s Olympic

Games and have an active, healthy

break from school.

As part of our initiative, each child

who takes part will be given a

‘Pas-Sport’

when they attend their frst session,

and will then have it stamped each

time they participate in an activity. The

aim is for children to achieve as many

stamps as possible over the holidays

and prizes will be awarded when

individuals reach certain milestones–

for example, if you collect 25 stamps

in your PasSport, you will receive

a family swimming pass, so all the

family can enjoy an active summer!

There will be a variety of camps

happening over the summer period,

including Ultimate Camps which last

from 9am – 3pm and incorporate

different activities each day, including swimming, lacrosse, basketball, shinty

and other Olympic themed sports. We will also be providing camps that are 2

hours long. All camps are led by Active Schools trained and qualifed sports

coaches and all have been involved in Active Schools camps in the past.

The Ultimate Camps will take place at Beach Leisure Centre, Kincorth Sports

Centre and Cults Sports Centre. Bridge of Don centres will also be offering

activities throughout the summer.

Melissa Chawner of Active Schools Aberdeen is looking forward to offering

the chance for youngsters to take part in lots of different sports throughout

the summer! She says ‘”The ‘Pas-Sport scheme is a fun way to get kids

active over the holidays and encourages them to take part in a wide range

of activities. The ‘Pas-Sport’ gives the children a sense of achievement and

allows them to reach different milestones set along the way! This year is a

big year for British sport and we want your children to be part of it!”.

Parents have said that the ‘PasSport’ is “a great way of getting kids to try

different activities” and “9/10 for overall ‘PasSport’ activities. We’ll see you

at future events. Thanks!”.

For information about ‘PasSport’ activities in your area read on in the

Summer in the City. For further details and to book contact:
