“SOUNDS OF

“SOUNDS OF SILENCE”DRAW PASSENGER RAVESThe difference is audible in Tyrolean Airways’ de Havilland Dash 8Q Series 300Tyrolean Airways passengersand Austrian news mediahave been highly complimentaryabout the quiet, almost vibrationfreeride in the airline’s newde Havilland Dash 8Q Series 300aircraft.“Passengers have been verysatisfied, commenting that theycould both hear and feel thedifference,” said Dr. ManfredRieglhofer, Tyrolean’s Manager,Public Relations. “Thejournalists, too, wrote of thedifferences between the “Q”model and other Dash 8 aircraft.”Tyrolean conducted demonstrationflights for both the publicand trade press, gaining favorablepublicity in 19 Austrian publications.Check-In, the Vienna AirportMagazine, wrote, “(We) were onboard when the new system waspresented and were able to verifyits efficiency. The system wasswitched on and off several timesduring the flight and thedifference was clearly ‘audible’.”The Dash 8Q is made possibleby a unique Noise and VibrationSuppression (NVS) system.Seventy-two microphonesconcealed in the passenger cabinmeasure noise levels which aresent to an onboard computer, together with propeller rpm andcabin pressure differential. Thecomputer then signals TunedVibration Absorbers (TVAs)attached to the fuselage frames toinitiate out-of-phase countervibrations to diminish themagnitude of the originalvibration. Therefore, the noisecausingvibrations are dampenedat their source so that most noisenever enters the passenger cabin. The result is a sharp reduction inboth cabin noise and vibration inall phases of flight, and aremarkable increase in passengercomfort.ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES INBOMBARDIER REGIONAL AIRCRAFTPierre Lortie, President of Bombardier Regional Aircraft, hasannounced the formation of two distinct groups within the company, one to focus on aircraft programs and the other to focus on operators ofthe de Havilland Dash 8 and Canadair Regional Jet aircraft families.Paul H.
