General Registration Information

Registration is on a first come, first served basis. All fees are due

at the time of registration. All first-time resident registrants must

register in person and provide proof of residency.

All classes will have a minimum enrollment. Classes which have not

met minimum enrollment 48 hours prior to the first class meeting

will be cancelled. Participants will be notified by phone and/or email

in the event of a class cancellation due to low enrollment.

Inclement Weather Information: Classes are cancelled when the

Shaker schools are closed. Refer to local radio and TV stations or

online at www.shaker.org. You may call our cancellation hotline at

216-491-3143.

Returned check service fee is $15.00.

Refund Policy

Refunds are available for classes or programs up to 72 hours prior

to the first class meeting. A refund claim form must be completed.

Forms can be obtained at the Main Office in Thornton Park or online

at www.shakeronline.com.

In the case of trips, money is refunded only if the space can be filled

and if the cancellation is received at least 48 hours in advance.

A full refund will be issued in the event of a class cancellation due to

insufficient enrollment.

$10 processing fee will be deducted with the following exceptions:

$5 50+ programs

$25 Camps, and Fall/Winter Hockey (except Mighty Mites)

$25 School Age Care

Please allow 3 - 4 weeks for refunds to be processed. If you choose

a Community Life Department computer credit, no processing fee

will be charged.

recreational programming for all residents. If you or a member of

your family has a special need, call 216-491-1295 to be connected

to the appropriate Program Coordinator.

The City does not necessarily endorse the opinions or business

affiliations of the individuals who teach its classes and programs.

Nothing kills a program quicker...

than waiting for the last minute to register. At some

point a decision is made whether to cancel a program

due to low enrollment. Registering late may mean you

missed your chance and the class has already been

cancelled. Please do not wait too long to register!

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES FOR ADULTS 60+: Senior

Transportati on Connecti on (STC) multi -passenger vehicles drive

individuals throughout the east side Cleveland suburbs for

medical appointments, and a variety of other services. Must meet

minimum age requirement to qualify for this service and complete

a registrati on form. A suggested donati on of $1 is requested for

a one way ride and $2 for a round trip. Funded in part through

GETTING STARTED WITH MEDICARE: If you are approaching age

65, or going on Medicare for the fi rst ti me, this is your opportunity

to gain a basic understanding of how Medicare works and how it

aff ects you. Learn what Parts A, B, C and D cover and what is

not covered. You will learn the diff erence between a Medicare

supplement and a Medicare advantage plan. This class is designed

to make Medicare easy to understand and to answer all of your

AQUATIC PROGRAM: Classes emphasize the development of enhanced range-ofmoti

students who are either new to bridge, have basic knowledge of

the game, or want to learn more. The correct use of universally

user bidding procedures is stressed. Each class ends with students

playing pre-dealt hands that reinforce the lecture. Those who

have no background playing bridge should come to the four hour

beginner class. Students progress through Levels I, II, and III as

DANCE - BALLROOM DANCING: Dance the waltz, fox trot,

salsa, and tango more like the “stars.” Execute dance steps with

Classes are 30 minutes in length and meet weekly for 6 weeks. Fall Session II classes do not meet Thanksgiving week.

Starti ng dates/ti mes for both Fall Session I and Fall Session II are listed in the chart below.

Beginning Learn to Skate classes are held at Thornton Park ice arena for children with litt le or no ice experience. Skati ng skills are

taught using the guidelines of United States Figure Skati ng (USFS). Bring your own skates or skate rental is available. Bike or hockey

helmets are mandatory for all Snowplow Sam 1 skaters. Bike helmets are recommended for Basic 1 skaters. Mitt ens or gloves are

recommended for Snowplow/Basic 1 students. Skaters should wear one pair of socks or ti ghts. Rental skates not included.

BABY BLADES: Ages 18 mo - 3 yrs. Basic skati ng skills such as sitti ng and standing on the ice, marching and gliding will be taught

for 20 minutes in a fun and positi ve atmosphere followed by story ti me for 10 minutes. Prerequisite: None. Rental skates not

included. Helmets are mandatory.

PRELIMINARY HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT (PHD): Ages 3-5. Class designed to teach basic skati ng and hockey skills to each skater.

Skills include sti ck handling, shooti ng and basic game concepts. See below schedule for days/ti mes. Session I meets 2 ti mes per

week while Session II meets once a week. For Session I, it is recommended that skaters take BOTH the Tuesday and Thursday

classes. Rental skates not included. Pre-requisite: Baby Blades.

ADVANCED LTS: Tuesday nights - If your skater has a desire to pursue competi ti ve skati ng or just wants to pursue a higher level

of skati ng, it is ti me to work towards joining the Shaker Figure Skati ng Club (SFSC). It is recommended that skaters enter the SFSC

through our Advanced LTS program. Once skaters have passed Basic 4 in our Learn to Skate program, they can move to Advanced

LTS. This class provides an opportunity for advanced instructi on beyond Learn to Skate on full ice. Rental skates not included.

StoryWalk TM Project

All ages welcome. Stories are written for pre-school level. Follow

the walking path around Thornton Park where pages of an

exciting children’s book will be mounted on stakes along the way.

StoryWalk was designed to combine fitness and literacy in a fun

activity for children. Make sure you dress appropriately. Look

for new stories throughout the year. The StoryWalk Project was

created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in

collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition

and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. Open from dawn to dusk.
