Lauderbach. This engraving appeared in the Art Journal of 1878.n the mountains of NelsonCounty, Dr. Gary Griffin jumpsout of his white Chevy van andwhistles for his dog. “Let’s go, Timber.”A 14-year-old English setter,Timber is the second-best grouse dogGriffin has ever owned. “He still hasat least one season left in him, Ithink,” grins the optimistic Griffin, alean and athletic figure in his late 60s.A member of The Loyal Order ofDedicated Grouse Hunters, Griffinsets a goal of spending 120 hourshunting grouse every year. Thattranslates into a lot of forest he andTimber have covered together in Virginiaand West Virginia. But whenGriffin is in the woods, he’s not onlygrouse hunting. He’s hunting chestnuts. For more than 40 years, Griffin,a plant pathologist and professoremeritus at Virginia Tech, and wifeLucille have joined a handful of researcherson a quest to restore ourblighted past and bring the Americanchestnut back to Virginia forests. One hundred years ago, theAmerican chestnut, Castanea dentata, made up nearly one-quarter of thetree species in our woods, formingthe very foundation of the southernAppalachians’ forests. Reachingheights of more than 65 feet and 4–5feet in diameter, the hardy and aggressiveAmerican chestnut was theundisputed monarch of the forest. Atree of true abundance, it was a preferredfood of wild turkey, deer, bear, grouse, and squirrels, and one of themost important sources of income formountain farmers who fattened theirhogs on chestnuts and earned cash4 VIRGINIA WILDLIFE u www.HuntFishVA.com
