One of the outstanding benefits of NPDPcertification is ensuring the use of the acceptable frameworks andbest practices that have been proven over time by the PDMA.When other product managers within my organization look toexpand their product development knowledge, I recommend theNPDP certification to assist in their personal development.Newman: What process did you follow to get certified?Kardian: My first introduction into the NPDP certificationarena consisted of a two-day training course. This gave me anoverview of all the modules and areas of focus within the NPDPexam. Then I set up a study group with one of my peers at CapitalOne where we reviewed articles and had discussions in preparationfor the exam. These study sessions really allowed us to focus onthe material and discuss key points for clarification.Newman: PDMA requires continuous learning and a recertificationprocess every three years. How do you remain current?Kardian: The primary way that I maintain certification is toattend the PDMA annual conference. This provides the opportunityto hear the industry’s leading speakers, have round-tablediscussions with others in the PDMA industry, and reconnectwith colleagues. The round-table conversation gives a forum todiscuss service marketing and product development in a moreintimate setting. The yearly conference provides updates on thelatest trends specific to new product development. I also attendeda conference workshop to go in-depth on specific principles ofNPD such as portfolio management. This was invaluable in understandingthe best practices specific to managing a portfolio ofproducts. Workshops and chapter meetings provide education andrecertification credits.Newman: What would you tell someone who is consideringNPDP certification?Kardian: I continue to incorporate my NPDP certification aspart of my professional growth in the product managers’ familywithin Capital One.
