Sustainable steel in focus at RuukkiHousing, offices and buildings account for 40 per cent of total energy consumption in the world.According to Petteri Lautso, Director, Sustainability and Architecture, at Finnish global company Ruukki,near zero levels of energy consumption can be achieved for office buildings. The company hasdeveloped a a series of steel-based, energy-saving products and systems for use in the construction ofbuildings. Besides, steel structures are basically re-usable and recyclable up to 99 per cent.Even though over the years Ruukki has been involvedin many major building projects in Sweden,such as Malmö Arena, Uppsala Concert andCongress Hall and Stockholm Waterfront CongressCenter, the company is a relatively unknown playerto the general public in Sweden. Ruukki is a globalsteel company that supplies metal-based components,systems and integrated systems to the constructionand mechanical engineering industries. Itis represented in 27 countries with 11 700 employed.Sweden is one of Ruukki’s most important marketstoday.Top of class in sustainabilityThe sustainability efforts of the company show results.In 2011, Ruukki achieved first place in the DowJones sustainability indexes DJSI World and DJSIEurope. These indexes include the top companiesthat are committed to sustainable development.More precisely, what have you done?“Economy and sustainability often meet, andmuch has to do with common sense”, explainsPetteri Lautso, Director, Sustainability andArchitecture, at Ruukki. He continues:“If you use special steel, you can build lighter steelproducts and use less raw material, which meansless CO 2in the production processes. Lightweightvehicles also save energy in goods transportation.”But that is just a part of the explanation. Ownersof buildings are increasingly looking at the runningcosts and here a lot is waiting to be done. AndRuukki is one of the early adopters.Product development withuniversitiesRuukki’s products are used in a broad range ofapplications. Steel piles are a material-efficient alternativein the foundations of buildings, and steelframe structures make it possible to build spaciousinteriors in sports centres, industries and offices.Façade claddings are a third example.Ruukki energy panels are a new energy-savingproduct consisting of a prefabricated, very airtightsandwich panel with a non-combustible mineralwool core between two metal sheets.“Building owners are very interested in cuttingPetteri Lautso, Director, Sustainability andArchitecture, at Ruukki, is an architect byeducation.Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre, Malmö Arena, Uppsala Concert and Congress Hall andthe Kilden Performing Arts Centre in Kristiansand, Norway, are just some examples of new buildingsthat use steel products and flexible production systems from Ruukki.running costs. Also, roughly 80 per cent of CO 2emissions come from running a building and only 20per cent can be traced to the production stage. Byusing our new energy panel solution, a developmentof sandwich panels, a considerable share of energyconsumption can be saved,” says Petteri Lautso.Ruukki has developed the concept in cooperationwith universities and customers. The aim was to constructa building to make it as energy efficient as possible.Two factors were important, air tightness of thebuilding and to recover heat from the ventilation system.“In the Finnish climate, the energy panel solutionwill save approximately 30 per cent of energy consumption,”says Petteri Lautso.The project started in 2009 and production of thefirst energy panels began in 2011. The first project touse Ruukki energy panels was the Sole Skog SportsCentre just outside Oslo.Ruukki has also started to integrate solar cells andsolar panels in the steel façade cladding system, asat the Astrum Centre in Salo, Finland.“The end result with the many details came outvery well, with regard to both the technical and aestheticalaspects,” says Petteri Lautso.Cooperation for sustainabilityBut there are also important developments beingmade in other dimensions on the sustainability front.Petteri Lautso believes the biggest potential in hisfield is in greater cooperation between differentbodies – owners of buildings, suppliers, operatorsand real estate people.“I see more and more partner cooperation in thisvalue network right now.
