Situation (MLA pg #) Example
Multiple authors (154):
List the authors in the same order as they are
listed in the source; reverse the first name in
the list, and leave the rest of the names in
normal order.
If there are more than three authors, you may
name only the first and add et al. (“and
others”), or give all the names in full in the
usual manner as stated above.
Less than four:
Smith, Randy, Brian H. Lee and Kathy R.
Vang. Life in a Time Warp. Chicago: Sun,
2007. Print.
Four or more:
Plag, Ingo, et al. Introduction to English

No author: Skip author’s name and use the work’s title.
Corporate/Government author (156):
Any group whose members are not listed on
title page. List the name of the group as the
author, omitting any articles (A, An, The) at
the beginning of the name.
Two + works by the same author(s) (134):
Use the author’s name the first time only; the
three hyphens in the entries afterwards stand
for that author’s name. Multiple works by the
same author are alphabetized by title.

Introduction, Afterword, etc. (161):
Give the author of the cited part’s name, then
the name of the part being cited (Introduction,
Preface, etc.). Cite the author of the complete
work after its title, preceded by “By.”
If the author of the complete work is the same
as the author of the intro, preface, etc., use only
the last name after “By.”
Translation (164):
List author’s name first, title of work, then
Trans. (translated by) and translator’s name.
List any editors (Ed.) in the order that they
appear on the title page.
