A Class Actas reported by Mrs. Shifra Schapiro, of ourTanakh Department“The Stream “ November 5, 2009/ 19 Heshvan 5770Mrs. Schapiro's eleventh grade class celebratedthe completion of Parashat Be-Ha'alotkha with a siyyum. Cookies, veggiestraws and chips were enjoyed by all, but thehighlights of the siyyum were the one-minutepresentations by each student. Each studentshared the idea that she liked best of those welearned. Esther Garbow and Rebecca Feinspoke about the importance of avoiding lashonha-ra, as we learn from the story of Miriam andAharon in Bamidbar chapter 12; Judy Felner and Yaffa Bluman remembered how Hashem calledMiriam and Aharon aside when he rebuked them for the lashon ha-ra, in order to avoid embarrassingthem. Chana Wilen noted the Torah's description of Moshe Rabbeinu's extreme modesty, unusual in aleader. Julie Kaufman recalled Eldad and Meidad's sacrifice in recusing themselves from the group ofelders so other worthy people could get the glory, and Yeshana Lewitter spoke of how God rewards peoplefor their noble actions even if the reward is not immediately given; both ideas that we discussed inchapter 11 of Bemidbar. Rachel Goldstein shared a dvar Torah about emet that she had heard from RabbiPrince.as reported by Ms. Sarah Gordon of our Jewish History DepartmentLast week, Ms. Gordon's tenth grade Jewish History class had a HassidicTisch. The class was divided up into different groups, with each group presentingits specific branch of Hassidut. These groups included Rebbe Nachman,Rav Elimelekh of Lejansk, the Ba'al HaTanya, the Bobover Rebbe and theBa'al Shem Tov. The girls got a chance to learn about the different branches ofHassidism, see Jewish History come alive and share Hassidic stories andsongs.from left to right are Rachel Goldstein, Rebecca Fein,Esther Garbow, Yeshana Lewitter, Julie Kaufman,Yaffa Bluman, Judy Felner and Chana Wilenabove, Ayala Carl (at left) andDaniella Greenbaum areteaching a niggunbelow, is that possiblyIlana Teicher (at left) andDaniella Meyer ?above, Eliana Sugarman, Yaffa Cohenand Penina Freedman get into thespirit of Rebbe Nachman's Hassidicmovementat right, Lisa Helrich and NaamaSegal engage their classmates4

“The Stream “ November 5, 2009/ 19 Heshvan 5770A Class Actas reported by Mrs. Elise Vitow, Director of Special Services and Teacher of "Women and Finance"Mr. Robert Dacey, a representative from the Teaneck branch of Chase Bank visited Mrs. Vitow's"Women and Finance" class to present a hands-on lesson on online and electronic banking.Mr. Robert Dacey of Chase, above, speaks toour students, some of whom are pictured atright. That's Mrs. Vitow in the back in the greensweaterHe demonstrated how to navigate the Chase website, using our interactiveSmartBoard in the computer room. Mr. Dacey covered suchtopics as on-line bill payment and verification of recent transactionsand balances. Students were also encouraged to further their understandingof personal financial management strategies as well as beingmade aware of identitytheft and its ramifications. The goal of this Seniorelective is to provide anintroduction to theprinciples and practicesof sound personalfiscal management. This informationis, ofcourse, relevant to every aspect of our students' daily lives andit will prepare them for the "real world."as reported by Talia Friedman '10Mrs. Nina Bieler, Programming Director, and fourMa'ayanoters (see photo below) attended a youthsummit at the UJA Federation headquarters inmidtown Manhattan on Friday, October 23. The programwas open to students in both public schools andday schools from all over the tri-state area and wasfocused on developing leadership skills in the studentattendees. Sessions were geared towards identifyingwho is a leader, what it takes to be a leader and, ofcourse, what specific strategies students can employto develop leadership qualities in themselves. Theway to do this, in simplified form, is to see a need, determine how to fill it and then build up that processwith your group. One example that impressed our studentswas that of a group of college students who realizedthat children in hospitals typically love to havevisitors, so they set up a whole program of visitations.from left to right are Talia Friedman '10.Leora Kook '12, Mrs. Bieler, Amalya Sherman '12andEsti Mellul '12Our students report that they are already getting ideas for projects at Ma'ayanot!5

“The Stream “ November 5, 2009/ 19 Heshvan 5770The Word B'AretzHi ,Mrs. Schmuckler!Just wanted to drop you a quick email saying "hi." Hope all is wellwith you at Ma'ayanot, from reading "The Stream" I see that thingslook just as exciting as ever! Israel is amazing; I'm having the time ofmy life here. I don't have a lot of free time to keep in touch with everyone- we learn till 11 at night (yep, Nishmat is very intense). Some- how we Ma'ayanoters find lotsof opportunities to see each other, which is amazing, and we're famous for our school spirit. I'd love tohear back from you about how everything is going! Enjoy Ma'ayanot!!Love,Chana (Tolchin '09)Hi, Mrs. Schmuckler,It's Atara Staiman.I am very sad because I am in Israel at Shaalvim for Women and I do not get "The Stream" by email. Please add me to the list!!!!thanks :)Shabbat shalom!-Atara (Staiman '09)Dear Mrs. Schmuckler,I hope school is going well for you. I'm really "lovin' it" over here, although it's super windy and rainyand cold right now, but I'm sure you've all been getting that for a while already. I'm not really used to it.Because we're so high up on mountains, when the wind blows it's extremely loud-sometimes it's reallyhard to even hear the teacher. And it's just frigid! The cold wind notwithstanding, this place is amazing. Ilove the girls and teachers, and, of course, the learning here. On the other hand, I'm suffering seriousMa'ayanot withdrawal...I was really sad I wasn't at Shabbaton this past week (although I was pacified bythe fact that my dad is here for the Alyn bike ride). Ask any of my friends-I talk about Ma'ayanot nonstop...oneof my friends actually regrets she didn't go here (she lives in Chicago, though), while the restare just getting a bit annoyed (jealous, clearly).I hope you're not too busy-but I'm sure you're doing just fine! You always manage to get everythingdone....Is the Open House coming up? How I wish I could help! (let me know...not that I can probably doanything, but still...you know me -I love extra-curriculars!)Have a wonderful week! Can't wait to hear from you,Yours,Ilana Barta '096
