2006 ANNUAL R EPORT
Dear Friend:
2006 was an exciting year for the Visiting Nurse Association of Mercer County, it was a
year of celebration, challenge and growth each impacting the delivery of home health care
and hospice services throughout Mercer County. Amidst the challenges and growth, services
to the people of Mercer County were delivered with the same compassionate care and
quality for which the agency has been known for. We are proud to let you know that the
Visiting Nurse Association of Mercer County remains the premier provider of quality home
health care and hospice services.
The VNA moved to an electronic medical record
Culminating several years of planning and research the VNA went live on a new state of
the art electronic medical record in November 2006. Clinical staff are now able to record
critical patient information directly into a Personal Data Assistant (PDA) eliminating the need
for cumbersome, paper records. The PDA frees staff to concentrate on patient care and
improve the coordination of services needed. This exciting new technology provides real
time data to be able to communicate effectively within the Agency as well as to the patient’s
physicians and other care providers.
Spring Event - Celebration of Life
Attended by 75 friends of VNA, the event was a success. The evening was highlighted with
the Community Partner of the Year Award presented to Noreen Rodriguez, of Bristol Myers
Squibb. Bristol Myers Squibb donated $37,000 in 2005 to allow the VNA to launch
SizeWise, a nutrition program allowing the VNA to educate the community on proper
nutrition. Members of the spring event committee presented a check in the amount of
$9,000 to the Visiting Nurse Association of Mercer County.
Annual Golf Outing
The Visiting Nurse Association held its Annual Golf Tournament on October 4th, 2006 at
Mercer Oaks Golf Course. Members of the golf committee presented a check in the amount
of $6,500 to the Visiting Nurse Association of Mercer County.
Still growing, still innovating, still caring after all these years.

events and volunteer services. All challenges can be overcome, when we have the support

Fourth Annual Spring Event
TRENTON, NJ (June, 2006) – Visiting Nurse Association of Mercer County honored Bristol-Myers Squibb as their
a community partner of the year in the delivery of home health care services at their Celebration of Life Event on
Friday, June 9th at Mercer Oaks Clubhouse. The evening included a Hawaiian Mystery Performance by R & R
Productions. The event raised over $9,000.
Third Annual Golf Outing

The VNA has taken a big step in 2006 and
converted from a manual to an electronic
medical record. The conversion has made
patient information more timely and readily
available, thus improving patient care. This
conversion has been a big challenge for the
VNA both operationally and financially.
The VNA has experienced a Net Loss for 2006
of $79,556 due to the additional cost incurred
in the implementation of the new software and
the temporary reduction in productivity resulting
from the learning curve that occurs when big
changes are put in place.
The VNA anticipates the long-term benefits of
electronic data management will positively
impact the bottom line in the future as well as
improve and facilitate patient care.

N EW O UTREACH P ROGRAM
ince obesity is a pervasive health problem
in the United States and two-thirds of the
population is overweight, the Visiting Nurse
Association of Mercer County has designed a multiphase
education and outreach program to address
these two areas in a program called SIZE WISE.
Size Wise will help residents of Mercer County
learn good eating/exercise habits as well as
increase awareness of the risks posed by obesity in
the development of chronic medical conditions,
such as pre-diabetes, diabetes and hypertension.
STAGE 1 will educate community members about
the risks of over fatness. Through presentations and
communication with senior groups, churches, PTA
groups, civic groups, and websites, Size Wise will
aim to educate and inform no fewer than 20
organizations (1000 plus residents) as a start to
implementing the program in Mercer County.
Informational sessions will focus not only on healthy
living and the role that being overweight or obese
plays in the development of chronic disease (such
as pre-diabetes and diabetes) but also on steps that
people can take to promote weight loss and remain
healthy. Participants will learn to identify if they are
overweight or obese as well as receive introductory
materials related to “wise” food choices and
portion sizes. Each session will teach the
participants how to incorporate physical activity
into their lives. Participants at each session will
receive an education packet addressing: good
health, signs of obesity/overweight, physical
exercises and other relevant information.
FOR M ERCER C OUNTY
STAGE 2 will provide continuing and ongoing
support for the participants of Stage 1 and the
community-at-large through quarterly newsletters
