Harriet’s sister, Mary Jane, married as a second husband, Alonzo Smith, firstcousin <strong>of</strong> President James A Garfield.Henry Rogers 27 was born in Morris County, New Jersey in 1752. He entered the service in 1775 underLord Stirling. He served one year. He was a weaver by trade and came to Hamilton County early in the1800’s. He died in 1840 and was buried in Roll graveyard, Cumminsville and later his body was movedtoWesleyan Cemetery. His wife was Phoebe Bennet, who died during the War <strong>of</strong> 1812. Their childrenwere: Elizabeth Rogers (married Thomas McFeely), Sarah Rogers (married Michael Burge), HannahRogers, (1791-1875) who married 14 Feb. 1816, Zebulon Strong, Phoebe Rogers (married JonathanHolden), Jemima Rogers (married Richard McFeely), Amos Rogers died infant, Samuel Rogers diedinfant, Nancy Rogers (married Cyrus Brown), Henry Rogers Jr. (married Rachel Maria <strong>Hill</strong>), MariaRogers (married Levi Pinney).Nathaniel Ryan came to <strong>Ohio</strong> about 1819 from New Hampshire and settled on section 36. His father wasEbenezer Ryan. Nathaniel had a son, William Cary Ryan who married 11 March 1863, Anna RebeccaPierson. She was the daughter <strong>of</strong> Alfred Pierson and granddaughter <strong>of</strong> William Pierson. Not related to theDaniel B. Pierson family <strong>of</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Hill</strong>.Samuel Seward 28 was born in New Jersey. He married Elsie Gentry and had ten children. He came to“... Hamilton county previous to 1800. For many days they were obliged to remain in the blockhouse atCarthage, so numerous and savage were the Indians at that time. After their fears had somewhat subsidedhe and his family located on a tract <strong>of</strong> land situated on Winton Road.” He was a farmer. One <strong>of</strong> hisdaughters, Eliza, married Reuben Van Zant.Jacob Skillman arrived in Springfield Township in 1806. He came to <strong>Ohio</strong> from Pennsylvania and whenhe arrived in Mt. Healthy, he cleared the land that belonged to his grandson, Henry. Jacob had five sons,Isaac, Benjamin, Jacob Jr., Thomas and Abraham. Henry was the son <strong>of</strong> Abraham and Abigail Skillmanand married Augusta Foster in 1857. Their children were Albert, George, Harry, Frank and Emma. Isaacowned a grocery store in <strong>College</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> near <strong>Hill</strong>crest and Hamilton Avenues.Thomas B. Smith, was a Revolutionary War veteran, <strong>of</strong> whom little is known. His wife’s name wasAbigail and after his death she married Thomas H<strong>of</strong>fner. Thomas’ daughters were Rachael Smith whomarried Zadock Lewis and Ann G. Smith who married Isaac C. Flager.The Snodgrass family lived north <strong>of</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Hill</strong>. William Snodgrass (1771-1836) and Elizabeth (1779-1844) are buried in the Finneytown Cemetery. Their children were: Abigail (married Isaac Jessup);Joseph Irwin (married 1st Emily Ann Spring, married 2nd Margaret Hathorn); Harriet (married JosephHall Virgin); James; John Thompson (married Catherine H<strong>of</strong>fner); William Lamdon. The family joinedthe Christian Church at North Bend and Winton Roads. William was the guardian for the children <strong>of</strong>Samuel Seward.
