ROBERT AND LUCILLE COWANLEAVE A LEGACY OF LOVEEarlier this year Robert andLucille Cowan transformedthemselves into steppingstones by establishing a legacyestate gift at the UMKCSchool of Dentistry that willbenefit future generations ofUMKC graduates.

We’ve had a wonderful life,” remarkedDr. Robert Cowan on thelife he and his wife, Lucille, have sharedin Branson, Mo., for almost six decades.During that time they built a thrivingdental practice in which he “did thedentistry” and she assisted (chairside atfirst, then as office manager).“Dentistry has been good tome, and I’ve tried to be good todentistry,” observed Dr. Cowanwith characteristic humility. “Ithas given me a stepping stone todo other things that I wanted to dowith investments and other things.”Earlier this year Robert andLucille Cowan transformed themselvesinto stepping stones byestablishing a legacy estate gift atthe UMKC School of Dentistrythat will benefit future generationsof UMKC graduates. At the timethe Cowans’ gift to the School ofDentistry was announced to thepublic by UMKC Chancellor LeoMorton at the 2009 Midwest DentalConference in March, the bequestwas valued at $8.2 million.“The University and the Schoolof Dentistry are certainly humbledby the generosity of the Cowans,”said UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton.“The Cowans’ extraordinarygift of education and opportunitywill provide immeasurable returns.We thank them for their unendingdedication and support, and for selectingUMKC to continue their legacy.”The Cowans asked that the gift,which will be made in the form of abequest provision in their estate plan,be used to endow a scholarship fund toassist students at the UMKC School ofDentistry. They hope their generositywill not only assist students with theireducations, but have a lasting impact ontheir lives.“We gave this [gift] a lot of thought,”said Dr. Cowan. “We wanted to dosomething that would help generationsof students, not just be spent today andgone tomorrow. It would be nice if someof the students would help the schoolafter they practice a few years and havea family and accumulate a little money;well, if they could help the school out,to pay back for their help, it’d be nice.”“I had the pleasure of visiting theCowans at their home in Branson inlate September with Dr. Nan Evanson,the school’s director of advancement,”said Dr. Marsha Pyle, dean ofthe UMKC School of Dentistry. “I wasDR. Their giftwill make a significant differencein the lives of the studentswho will be the recipients ofthe Cowans’ generosity.”As Dr. Cowan reflected onhis career, he admitted thathis dental career has beena labor of love. Eventhough he retired about ayear ago, he still misses,at age 89, the office.“There’s nothing inthe world I’d ratherdo than dentistry,” he said. “I havetrouble with my feet, and if it wasn’t forthat, I’d be down at the office doing alittle bit of work right now.”Robert and Lucille met in KansasCity and married in 1951. Dr. Cowanhad graduated from the University ofKansas City, School of Dentistry in1949, worked briefly for the school’soral surgery department, and thenjoined the U.S. Public Health Serviceto evaluate water fluoridationand fluoride application on children’steeth. He and the team of clinicianshe supervised traveled throughout thestate of Missouri. During his travelshe learned of a dentist who wantedto sell his “small, small practice” indowntown Branson. Dr. Cowan hadworked on all the children in andaround Branson, so he was familiarwith the area and liked it.But, he admits, “You’re talkin’about a man in his late 20s, and atthat age you don’t know really whatyou want. All you know is that youneed to go to work to try to makea living. We liked the river runningthrough, and thought it was anice area. I thought all my life thatI could make anything work that Iwanted to work.”Dr. MarshaPyle, dean of the UMKC Schoolof Dentistry, visited the Cowens at their homein Branson, Mo., to personally thank them onbehalf of the University for their generosity2 • Explorer Winter 2009

Dr. Fe l i x Qu i a s o nDr. Felix Quiason, UMKC associate professorof endodontics, passed away Tuesday,September 8, 2009, at Research MedicalCenter. Dr. Quiason joined the UMKCDepartment of Endodontic faculty in 2001,after practicing in north Kansas City, Mo., formany years. His outgoing personality and hiseternal optimism and courage in the face ofthe daunting health challenges earned himthe sincere affection and admiration of hisstudents, colleagues and patients.“What I will remember most aboutFelix Quiason, and to me it will be his legacy,was how eternally upbeat that he alwaysremained in spite of a myriad of major health problems that plagued him duringthe final years of his life,” said Dr. James Dryden (DDS ’66, MS ’72), chair of theUMKC Department of Endodontics. “I have made countless friends over mylifetime, and most of them have had positive personalities. But no one with whomI have been personally acquainted has had a demeanor quite like Felix. Despitehaving to cope with his ongoing health issues, Felix showed up for work at theschool day after day. He always had a smile on his face and laughter always cameeasy to him. I visited him at the hospital three days before his passing. His lastwords to me were, ‘I’ll see you back at the school in a few days, Jim.’ He will besorely missed by all of us at UMKC, especially in the Department of Endodontics.”Dr. Quiason was born September 15, 1942, in Manila, Philippines, and likehis father became a dentist He earned his doctorate in dental medicine degreein 1964 from the University of the East, Dental College, in Manila, Philippines.Dr. Quiason and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1966. He received aDDS degree (1972) and a graduate certificate (1979) from UMKC and a master’sdegree in endodontics from the University of Nebraska (1982). He is survivedby Nora Quiason, M.D., his loving wife of 43 years; his mother, Felicisima G.Quiason; daughters Emilie Rottinghaus and her husband Dan, Melissa Tizonand husband Alex, and son Robert; four grandchildren, Collin, Carson, Mayaand Dylan. Mueller, who served theUMKC School of Dentistry as a librarianfor 23 years, died Wednesday July 22,2009, at the ageof 80. He joinedthe DentalLibrary team onJanuary 6, 1986,as a LibraryClerk. He filleda variety oflibrary positionsover the years,ending his careeras a LibraryInformationSpecialist II. His unfailing cheerfulnessand conscientiousness made him belovedby students, faculty and staff alike. Hewas extremely helpful and would goout of his way to help patrons locateinformation and materials. He enjoyedpeople from every walk of life, talkingeasily with everyone. He especiallyenjoyed socializing at the DentalLibrary’s special events, such as first-yearorientation and October Open House.He knew an impressive amount ofKansas City history, antiques, glassware,and salt and pepper shakers. He wasan active team member of the DentalLibrary at the time of his death. JIM ELIAS DELIVERS DENTAL CARE INZAMBIA, AFRICASince 1998 Jim Elias(DDS ’79), Independence,Mo., hasparticipated in missiontrips to Zambia,Africa, to deliver muchneeded dental care to itsimpoverished citizens.Dr. Elias and his missionwork are featuredin a GateHouse NewsService article by TeresaSheffield. According tothe article, Dr. Elias wasrecruited by one of his patients, Charlotte Franklin, who, with her husband, Larry,operate International Children’s Missionary Enterprise, which organizes internationalmissionary trips around the world. Over eight years, Elias estimates he hashelped about 12,000 Zambians.“I think just realizing the needs that these people had. I think too as my love forGod and my love for mankind grew, and I was asked by another church, the KansasCity Baptist Temple I (went back). And I did, and I did, and I did. I like going toAfrica because people appreciate it more, and I hope it can happen here,” he said.“You can’t help people who don’t want to be helped. It’s just a feeling of love andsincerity, and I want it to happen here. The people are so happy, so content withso little. Dr. Cowan bought the practice inthe early 1950s, and he and Lucillemade Branson their home. In 1957 theyconstructed a building that houses thedental office to this day — a half blockoff 65 Highway and a half block offHighway 76, better known as The Strip.At that time, though, The Strip was justa gravel road, as was the road to Springfield,Mo. Their house then, as now, wasjust down the street from the office. “Ifyou can throw a rock a long way, youcan hit the office from our house,” saidDr. Cowan.The Cowans have witnessed a lotof changes in Branson, most notablythe blossoming of a boundless varietyof entertainment venues. Even thoughthe town has grown to where they don’tknow everyone the way they used to,they think Branson is still a nice town.They have always liked to hunt and fish,and when their workdays were done,they headed for the lakes, river andforests surrounding Branson to enjoythe outdoors. They also traveled theworld, going to dental meetings in Russia,China and Germany. And they’vehunted big game together in places likeNewfoundland, Manitoba, Ontario andColorado. Last year marked their 53rdyear to go on a fishing trip in Canada.“We’ve enjoyed ourselves,” said Dr.Cowan. “We didn’t cut anything short.”The Cowans certainly haven’t cutanything short in their generosity to theUMKC School of Dentistry. Their bequestis one of the largest private donationsever made to an American dentalschool. Editor’s note: On Aug. 10, 2009, MarshaPyle, DDS, MEd, became the new dean ofthe UMKC School of Dentistry. Previously,Dr. Pyle served as vice dean and associatedean for education at Case Western ReserveUniversity (CWRU) School of DentalMedicine in Cleveland, Ohio. After receivingher D.D.S. degree from CWRU in 1984,she practiced privately for 11 years, whilealso teaching in CWRU’s clinical program.After completing a two-year fellowship ingeriatric dentistry in 1991, she joined theCWRU faculty full time. She was chargedwith establishing the CWRU Training Centerfor Geriatric Oral Health, and served as itsdirector from 1996 to 2000.I cannot adequately express howgrateful I am to have the opportunity toserve the UMKC School of Dentistryas its dean. I have long been familiarwith UMKC’s reputation as one of thenation’s leading dental schools. Throughmy involvement with the AmericanDental Education Association (ADEA),I’ve had the opportunity to get to knowsome of UMKC’s leaders, such as Dr.John Killip, assistant dean of StudentPrograms; Dr. Pam Overman, associatedean for Academic Affairs; and Dr. CindyAmyot, director of Distance Educationand Faculty Development. They, as wellas other UMKC faculty I’ve met along theway, have always impressed me with thepassion and energy they invested in theirwork as educators and clinicians.I’ve felt very comfortable since myMessage fromthe DeanDr. Marsha Pylearrival at the UMKC School of Dentistry.CWRU School of Dental Medicine isa private institution that’s smaller thanUMKC, but both schools share thesame basic philosophy of education. Forinstance, both institutions are known forhaving excellent basic clinical programsthat offer state-of-the-art training to theirstudents. I’ve also noticed that CWRUand UMKC both embrace a belief systemthat encourages a spirit of collegialityamong faculty, staff, students and alumni.It’s a spirit that recognizes that we’re all inthis together, that we rise and fall as one,that the whole is greater than the sumof the parts. This is the spirit that I lookforward to participating in as we worktogether to build a bright future on theschool’s impressive past.Speaking of the future, we are busypreparing for the accreditation site visitthat will take place in 2010. Under theleadership of Dr. Pam Overman, facultyand staff throughout the building havebeen working very hard to prepare firstdrafts of our “self-study document.” InNovember 2009 we will hold a mock sitevisit that will give us a chance to acquireexternal input on how we’re addressingaccreditation standards. The process ofconducting the self-study and the honestintrospection it demands provide us withan excellent opportunity for us to assesswhere we are and where we want to go.To address the latter issue, wehave organized a Strategic PlanningCommittee whose membership includesrepresentatives from the school’s faculty,staff and alumni. They have been chargedwith the task of updating the school’sstrategic plan that will articulate ourpriorities for the next five to ten years.This is an ideal time to undertakethis process. The University has justcompleted its strategic planning process,so we have a clear perspective to guideus as we formulate our own plans for thefuture. I am pleased to report that ourfuture is bright because we have so manystrengths to build on. We have a clinicalprogram that is top-notch, a researchprogram that is the star of the entirecampus, and an outreach program that isa major contributor to the University’smission to engage with the communityand provide service to our constituentsand partners.Our strategic planning process is anopportunity for us to think globallyas one institution in order to create acontemporary vision of the future thatwill enable us to capitalize on currentareas of excellence where we have aniche that can grow further. For example,our research program is absolutelyphenomenal. But we still must ask,where do we want to place emphasisin order to take advantage of futureopportunities, such as clinical research.The quality of our clinical program issecond to none, but we must continuallyadapt our program in response to andin anticipation of advances in dentaltechniques, technologies and materials.In short, we must prepare our graduatesto thrive in the dental practice of todayAND tomorrow. In our educationalprograms, we have an opportunity tocapitalize on the excellence we alreadyhave established in technology anddistance education. This is a time ofnational discussion about how dentalschools deliver educational programsand how best to incorporate innovationinto our curriculums. UMKC needs toparticipate in this discussion by examininghow we deliver our programs and engageour students. How can we best convertlearning objectives that our faculty thinksare important (e.g. critical thinking) intolearning outcomes our students activelyexhibit? In 1988his son, David, joined his practice. Sinceretiring in 1990 he has been living inWichita, Kan.Paul E. Arthur, DDS, Centennial, Colo.writes that he is enjoying retirement.CLASS OF 1955R.P. McGraw, DDS, Independence, Mo.,has three nieces: two are practicing dentistryand one is a junior at UMKC.W.H. He also served as a Lt. Col. inthe U.S. Army Reserve. He and his wife,Jackie, have been married for 55 years andhave two children and five grandchildren.Edward J. Lamb, DDS, Olympia, Wash.,retired in 1999. He is playing lots of golfand scores a hole-in-one about every otheryear. They live six months in Washingtonand five+ months in Arizona at Sun CityWest. They RV and boat in Canada andAlaska when they can.Russell Riggs, DDS, Rogers, Ark., hasretired from dentistry and is now a fulltimevolunteer. He is also a very happynewlywed.Frank M. Wallace, DDS, McAllen, Texas,has spent his time in his motor hometouring the United States for the last fiveyears. He bought a new home in McAllenand now plays tennis in national tournamentsthroughout Texas. He had a privatepractice in Vancouver, Wash., from 1964-1995 and is now retired.Thomas Howe, DDS, Sedalia, Mo., writesthat he is in good health. He and hisson, David Howe (DDS ’90), practicedtogether from 1990 until 2005 whenThomas retired. His son still practices inthe same office.George Karr, DDS, Rolla Mo., has treateddental patients in 20 different countriesbut only got paid for it in two of them.He lived in Hawaii for three years the firsttime and three months the second time.He spent two and half years on a MercyShip in the South Pacific with headquartersin Newcastle, Australia. He nowspends his time caring for his wife who hasa rare disease, progressive genetic spasticdystonia. He is in his fourth retirementand enjoying his two great granddaughters.Charles Dunlap, DDS, Lee’s Summit,Mo., is still working as a professor in theDepartment of Pathology, Radiology andMedicine at UMKC School of Dentistry.Timmie J. Ifeel at home. •Barry Daneman Moves toUMKC FoundationIn July 2009, the University ofMissouri-Kansas City establishedthe UMKC Foundation in order tocentrally coordinate accountabilityfor all the advancement efforts onbehalf of UMKC andits academic units.With the advent of thenew Foundation andplanning for the University’snext capitalcampaign, UMKC hasrealigned advancementpositions to maximizestaffing, resources andexpertise. As part ofthis realignment, BarryDaneman, the Schoolof Dentistry’s directorof Community andAlumni Relations, begandevoting his timeand talents to the UMKC Foundationon October 21, 2009.In a farewell message to the Schoolof Dentistry, Daneman said, “It hasbeen a great honor to work for theUMKC School of Dentistry, theRinehart Foundation and the DentalAlumni Association these past 14-plusyears. I’ve made many good friends andhave had the opportunity to collaborateon a wide variety of interestingprojects: class scholarships, continuingeducation programs, endowed chairsand professorships, Medicaid studies,memorials, outreach programs, renovationprojects and workforce models. Ihave enjoyed my students in the dentalethics classes, faculty colleagues in theDepartment of Dental Public Health,staff colleagues from the Office ofAlumni, Development and ContinuingEducation and alumni friends. I willtreasure these years always. I cannotadequately express my thanks for havingbeen given these opportunities.”In recognition of Barry’s contributionsto the school and the professionof dentistry, Dean Marsha Pyle said,“We are eternally grateful for Barry’smany years of hard work on behalf ofthe school, the Rinehart Foundationand the school’s outreach programs.His good work within theschool and in the communitywill be missed but notforgotten.”Daneman will retainsome accountability forthe School of Dentistrywhile taking on broaderadvancement responsibilitiesas an AdvancementOfficer for the centraloffice. Dean Pyle saidthat she is working withthe University’s Advancementleadershipto develop an alternativestaffing plan for theSchool of Dentistry’s Rinehart Foundationto assure that its needs continueto be met. As part of the reorganizationof the school’s alumni and advancementactivities, Dr. Cynthia Amyothas been asked to assist in the area.Since 2007 Dr. Amyot has served theSchool of Dentistry as a professor andthe director of Distance Educationand Faculty Development. Previouslyshe served as director of the Divisionof Dental Hygiene from 1993 to2006. She has served on the school’sfaculty since earning her MS degree indental hygiene education at UMKC in1993. She earned her EdD degree fromthe University of Missouri in 2003.Dr. Amyot served as president of theUMKC Dental Hygienists’ Alumni Associationin 1996-97 and served on itsboard from 1993 to 2007. •Explorer Winter 2009 • 5

Dental Hygiene Summer RotationsOffer Real-World ExperiencesBy Bonnie Branson, RDH, PhD, AssociateProfessor, Division of Dental HygieneThe summer of 2009 marked the sixthyear that UMKC dental hygiene studentscompleted summer rotations at federallyqualified health centers in Missouri.Each July since 2004, dental hygienestudents have participated in a two-weekrotation to sites all over Missouri todeliver care. The students work in theclinics as part of the team deliveringpatient education, exposing radiographsand completing dental hygiene treatment.The treatment consists of all types ofcare, including child and adult prophies,periodontal maintenance and scale/rootplaning.Housing for the students is providedby the Area Health Education CentersRegional Offices. Coordinators for theseregional offices also arrange for thestudents to participate in a communityoral health activity outside the confinesof the dental facility. These programshave included educational programs tospecial groups and career fairs.Students are supervised by thehygienists and dentists at the federallyqualified health center and enjoy theopportunity to experience dentistryoutside the confines of the dental schoolenvironment. The goals of the summerrotation experience include: increasingthe students’ awareness of the needs ofdiverse populations and gaining insightinto the care that is delivered in a publichealth setting. UMKC dental hygienefaculty visit the sites to connect with eachcenter and determine the quality of theexperience.The summer rotationprogram, which is anenhancement to thepublic healthcurriculum, drawsstudents into realworld experiences through servicelearning. Service learning is a valuableteaching methodology because it engagesstudents in an activity that is driven bylearning objectives, as opposed to purevolunteerism. Specific course objectivesdirect the experience, so both the studentand the community benefit. Studentsreflect on the experience throughdirected journaling, which are read byfaculty so dialoguing can take place. Thisinteraction, along with the experience,helps the student to put the experienceinto perspective and be prepared for realworld experiences.Student comments indicate thatthe rotations are indeed meeting theirobjectives. Students are becoming awareof the diverse oral health care needsthroughout Missouri as they assist withthe role that federally qualified healthcenters play. The following sampling ofstudent comments highlights the value ofthe experience:“Public Health Setting — I love it!These past two weeks have changed mymind and thoughts about where I wantto be when I graduate.”“I realized that Ihave taken forgranted the luxuryof having qualityhealth carereadily available.”“Before this experience I had never reallyput myself in the shoes of a mother withfinancial burdens trying to seek care.This definitely gave me a new perspectiveon the ability to seek care. I realizedthat I have taken for granted the luxuryof having quality health care readilyavailable.”Student summer rotations havebeen a win-win situation for bothUMKC dental hygiene students and theunderserved residents of Missouri. Upontheir return each year the students areasked, “Should we do this again withnext year’s class?” The answer is alwaysa resounding “YES!” So we’re alreadylooking forward to a having seventhsuccessful summer in 2010. •6 • Explorer Winter 2009

MARY HELEN SCHOOLEY TAKESIf you can’t find Mary Helen Schooley in her office working as the administrative associate for the Clinical Programs at the UMKCSchool of Dentistry, you might find her roaming the halls in her walking shoes, racking up another million steps as a participantin the Million Steps Pedometer Program, sponsored by the University of Missouri System’s Wellness Program. Schooley becameUMKC’s first 5-millon stepper in August 2009, one year after she began the program. She and her feat (or should we say feet?)were featured in an article that appeared in the August newsletter of the T.E. Atkins UM System Wellness Program. In the articleSchooley confesses that she’s been an intermittent walker since age 40, but now, at 62, “I’ve never missed a day since starting theprogram. I put on my pedometer first thing every morning. The Dental School building is very conducive to walking, especially whenthe weather is too rainy, cold or hot. Eight laps around the second or third floors equal one mile.” She says that she also walks 35–40minutes in the evening in her neighborhood. Her record for most steps in a day? 32,455! MISSOURI GOVERNOR JAY NIXON VISITSUMKC SCHOOL OF DENTISTRYTo Promote Caring for Missourians InitiativeGov. Jay Nixon held a pressconference at the UMKC Schoolof Dentistry, Tuesday morning, October20, 2009, to discuss the implementationof Caring for Missourians, a new stateprogram that will significantly expandeducational opportunities for healthcareprofessionals in high-demand fields. Underthe innovative grant program, UMKCwill receive special funds to increaseenrollment in its Doctor of DentalSurgery program by 17 students over thenext four years. The UMKC School’s ofMedicine, Pharmacy and Nursing alsoare receiving special funding to increasetheir class size. Other two- and four-year,public institutions in Missouri also areexpanding their capacity for trainingdoctors, dentists, nurses and other healthcare professionals through Caring forMissourians. While visiting the UMKCSchool of Dentistry, Gov. Nixon touredthe building and met with faculty andstudents as well as members of the press. •Explorer Winter 2009 • 9

We here at the school are surroundedby signs of your kindness: over$400,000 awarded annually in scholarshipsto our students, and other resourcesfor faculty development, teaching awards,an outstanding general clinic, specialtyclinics, and community outreach programs.The quality of these areas wouldnot be what they are without the generoussupport you have given to your school.I know it may seem like we are alwaysasking for support — it is true that,despite your generosity, our needs remainabundant. I would like to tell you aboutanother cause that is a bit different, however.Let me explain:At the Midwest Dental Conferencethis coming spring, Charles Dunlap (DDS’60) will be recognized as Alumnus ofthe Year. I am sure that Dr. Dunlap isknown to you as an excellent teacher,mentor, and accomplished scientist andclinician. For nearly half a century he hastaught and practiced oral pathology at ourschool.A small group of alumni has begun acampaign to raise money in Dr. Dunlap’shonor. When asked what cause he wouldlike to have his name associated with, heresponded that he was interested in a fundto help indigent patients at our clinic. Dr.Dunlap has been a steadfast contributor toour existing small indigent care fund, andhe has now expressed the desire that anendowment be established to provide assistanceto patients who have acute dentalneeds and who have no resources to payfor treatment. This fund, to be held in theRinehart Foundation, will ensure that thecompassion Dr. Dunlap shows for people10 • Explorer Winter 2009in need can continue after his retirement,and even after his lifetime.Charles Dunlap describes himself as aman of humble beginnings. He was bornnear the end of the great depression, ina small farm five miles removed fromStigler, Okla. His grandmother deliveredhim because a phone, hospital and doctorwere not available. His father worked in asaw mill for 50 cents a day. When he wasseven years old, a better job for his fathertook the family to Muskogee. Life becamemore difficult, however, when his motherdied of tuberculosis soon after the move.World War II took his father to the Armyand Europe, and took Charlie back to thefarm to be cared for by a neighbor and hisgrandparents.In 1964 Charlie was offered the positionof assistant professor in oral pathologyat the UMKC School of Dentistry…and the rest is history. He became boardcertified in oral pathology in 1967 andafter years of service, became president ofthe American Academy of Oral Pathologyand eventually president of the AmericanBoard of Oral Pathology.Throughout his career, Dr. Dunlap’spassion has been the pursuit of knowledgeand the sharing of it with students and fellowdentists. The school’s Faculty Practicehas provided a steady stream of patientsreferred to Dr. Dunlap for diagnosisand treatment. He has never declined apatient, and he does not charge a fee forpatients referred to him in the practice.Charlie believes that he has an obligationto use his knowledge and skill to help others.When asked why he is interested in theestablishment of an indigent care fund,Charlie responds that he thinks it must bebecause of own beginnings. He understandshardship because he has known it.Charlie believes that his life has taughthim that among all human traits thatmold us and make us what we are, kindnessand the desire to help others are thebest measures. One who is kind to othersalmost invariably has the “whole package”— all the traits and attributes that makefor a good person.I invite you to honor this good personby making a contribution to the CharlesDunlap Indigent Care Fund which willensure that Charlie’s good works willcontinue.I hope you agree that the giving opportunityI have described is differentfrom our usual appeals. CAMPAIGN FOR DENTAL EXCELLENCE SURPASSES$12 MILLION GOALBy Nan Evanson, Ed.D.,Leadership Gift Officer forthe School of DentistryOn July 1, 2004, the UMKCSchool of Dentistry launched afive-year $12 million campaign.In the early part of this decade, anational consensus had emerged amongdental professionals that excellence inAmerican dental education must bepromoted and sustained. The UMKCeffort was in partnership with OurLegacy — Our Future, the AmericanDental Association’s ten-year nationalcampaign for dental education.Our school’s campaign leadershipidentified four major challenges for theschool: difficulty in recruiting facultybecause of non-competitive salarystructures; rising tuition for our studentsdue to reduced state financial support;stress on our clinic and other safety netorganizations due to state and federalbudget cutbacks (especially for theMedicaid Program); and the complexityof contemporary dental educationas research and practice introduce newtechnologies, methods, and materials.It had been determined at theoutset of the campaign that all giftsand pledges received by the RinehartFoundation or by the UMKC School ofDentistry between July 1, 2004 and June30, 2009 would be counted toward theoverall goal of $12 million as well as thesub-goals for each of the four areas ofneed. The results, as of June 30, 2009,are summarized below:The funds and endowment whichhave been established or augmentedthrough campaign fundraising are toonumerous to list. However, a fewexamples are: the Robert and LucilleCowan Scholarship, the David MooreFaculty Development Fund, theTanaka Hawaii Professorship inRestorative Dentistry, the renovationof the orthodontic clinic,support for the Special PatientCare Clinic, and Project ReadySmile.The faculty, staff, andstudents of the UMKC Schoolof Dentistry are grateful toour alumni and other benefactorswho have chosento promote excellence indentistry by supporting ourschool. Students, faculty andscholarship donors gatheredin Pierson Auditorium onUMKC’s Volker Campus,Tuesday evening September15, 2009, to participate in theschool’s annual ScholarshipRecognition Dinner. Thanksto the generosity of the UMKCSchool of Dentistry’s alumniand friends who have endowed115 separate scholarship funds,the school was able to distribute298 monetary awards (totaling$409,000) to 194 dental, dentalhygiene and advanced educationstudents. The ceremony alsoincluded the recognition of 27students who received 32 awardsfrom 14 regional and nationalscholarships.The following four scholarshipswere awarded for the first timein 2009:F.L. Fa u l c o n e r Sc h o l a r s h i pFu n dAs a salesman, F.L. Faulconerdepended on his voice to earn hislivelihood. He nearly lost his voice,his career and his life when he wasstricken with cancer of the palate. Hewas referred to the UMKC School ofDentistry where he received majorjaw reconstruction and was fitted fordentures. The clinical care he receivedat the school enabled him to continuehis career and to care for his familyfor many more years. In gratitude forthe school’s impact on his life, Mr.Faulconer made a provision for partof his estate to come to the UMKCSchool of Dentistry. In recognitionof Mr. Faulconer’s generosity and inconsultation with his son, LeonardFaulconer, the school awards thisscholarship to students interestedin prosthetic dentistry. This year’sdistribution of the F.L. FaulconerScholarship Fund will be awardedbefore December 31, 2009.G.N. a n d Ed n a McDa v i dDe n t a l Sc h o l a r s h i pDr. Gaillard N. McDavid practicedin Fredricktown, Mo., from 1919until two years before his death inAugust 1974. Dr. McDavid wasthe typical “old-fashioned countrydentist”: his hours matched theneeds of his patients, and his feesfor services matched his patients’means. The McDavid family liveda comfortable but prudent lifestyle.Dr. McDavid preferred walking todriving, and two years before hisdeath he gave up the keys to his car,SCHOLARSHIPS AND RECIPIENTS:2009–2010 ACADEMIC YEARa 1947 Plymouth with only 20,000miles on its odometer. Funds fromthe G.N. and Edna McDavid DentalEducation Trust became availableto the UMKC School of Dentistryearly in the fall of 2009. This year’sdistribution of the G.N. and EdnaMcDavid Dental Scholarship will beawarded before December 31, 2009,as one-time awards to dental studentsfrom Missouri. This scholarship reinforcesthe club members’ support of futuremembers of the dental profession.Nominations for the UniversityDental Study Club Scholarship aresolicited from each of the clinicalTeam coordinators. Recipients of thisscholarship must exhibit a caring,professional and ethical demeanorand show strong restorative skills asthey provide care to their patients.This year’s award was given to AdamMcClellan, DDS Class of 2010Dr. Sp e r r y G. Ze r v a sSc h o l a r s h i p Fu n dIn 2009, Dr. Dean Zervas, a 1965UMKC DDS graduate, establishedthis scholarship in memory of hisbrother, Dr. Sperry Zervas, a 1955UMKC DDS graduate. Sperry servedwith the U.S. Air Force for twoyears in Anchorage, Alaska. Afterhis discharge from the military in1957, he established his practice inBartlesville, Okla., and practicedgeneral dentistry there until 1966.At that time, he entered the UMKCGraduate Orthodontic Program,receiving his M.S. degree in 1968. Hereturned to Bartlesville to practiceorthodontics until his death in 2008.He distinguished himself by servinghis community and profession, whiletouching the lives of countless patientsby creating beautiful smiles throughhis professional skills. His true passionand joy was the close relationshipsthat he formed with his patients,and seeing the transformation thatorthodontics created in them, not onlyin appearance, but in their increasedself-esteem and self-confidence thatresulted from treatment.
