HEALTHBy Dr. Donna, EditorThe Doctor of theFutureYears ago, Hippocrates predictedthat food will be medicine. He was right. Now we knowthat food is medicine. Natural remediesare one of the most sought after types ofinformation on the internet. People wantto use natural foods and herbs to solvetheir health issues and some will acceptnothing less. That’s why professionssuch as chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and herbalists willcontinue to do well no matter what liesin store for the economy. What Does the FutureBring Now?Since we already are living in Hippocrates’future, it’s time to look aheadonce more.Let’s evaluate what is happeningright now. Times are tough. Peopledon’t really want to travel anywhereunless they have to. If something isavailable in their own neighborhood, that’s where they will get it. Peopleare afraid that gas prices will rise onceagain. When they do, shipping costswill increase again. The average person will travel abouthalf an hour to see a doctor, but if thechoice is between two doctors, the doctorwhose office is closest has the edge.If you are a doctor or a health practitioneryou’ll have to draw upon clientswithin a 15 to 20 mile geographical radius. This is very limiting! How can youenlarge your geographical reach?Tele–MedicineHas ArrivedSimple. With a video phone or videoconferencing system.A video phone is a desk phone with avideo display on it, plain and simple.A camera sits at the top of the videodisplay and captures what is happeningin the room. The closer you are to thecamera, the larger you are in the picture. The images seen are in real time, andthere is very little if any delay in thetransmission, unlike what happens whenyou watch some of the YouTube videoson the internet. When someone with a video phone callsyou, you see that person clearly as soonas you pick up the phone. Similarly, they see you.Connect with YourPatients/Clients Througha Video PhoneCan you imagine the benefits? First ofall, your patient will absolutely love theidea that you are available in this way.If he develops a suspicious rash andcannot make it in to the office for a fewdays, you can take a peak at it beforehis appointment. Disabled or hospicepatients can be monitored through vitalsigns capture, and disease management, assisted living, and post-hospital carebecomes an entirely new dimension.Your phone becomes used as a medicaldata gathering device. If a patient slips and falls and canbarely move, you can see the extent ofthe injury by asking her to perform afew simple orthopedic tests. The videophone can aide your diagnosis, but morethan that, it could establish a deeperbond between you and your patient. Youwould have been there for him and herin their time of need. It can be the newdoctor/patient 911. That alone goes along way with patients.Have you ever noticed that whoever hasthe latest technology is revered? Rememberwhen the big screen televisionshit the market? Whoever had one wasnot just lucky; they were revered. Theiphone was similar.Tele-medicine has already begun. Thereare tele-otoscopes and tele-stethoscopesthat allow you to see inside the ear andhear the heartbeat remotely. Some ofthese devices capture the data that canbe used later for assessment. Tele-medicinewill become essential for practitionersin internal medicine, family practice, chiropractic, pediatrics, obstetrics, rehabilitation and even pharmacy.Patients value this type of service. Theirconversations could easily switch from“See my doctor – he’s really good…”to “…My doctor is great. He even hasvideo phone access.”Health practitioners who are availableas many ways as possible, using multimediaare the next doctors of the future. Is there really any question about it?Getting onboard with the latest technologyis easier than you can imagine.About the author – Dr. Donna practicedchiropractic medicine for 10 yearsand has since retired. SKINBy Ananda MahonyFATSThe Good, the Bad & the Uglyfor Skin HealthFats have a bad nameand we are told to avoid fats in oureveryday diets. However, some fats arevery important for our general wellbeingincluding healthy, radiant skin.Nutrition has moved away from the “allfats are bad” stance to “it’s the type offat that matters, not the quantity”. Fatsare an essential part of our diet but it isimportant to focus on the good fats inour diets and minimize the bad fats.Beneficial fats “good” fats supporthealthy skin cell nutrition and the productionof collagen as well as maintaininghealthy blood flow to the skin.Fats help to absorb nutrients such asvitamin A and E, which maintain skinintegrity and fluidity. Good fats alsohelp to moderate inflammation, a factorcurtail to the management of manyskin conditions such as acne, eczemaand psoriasis.Sources of good fats in our everydaydiet include olive oil, sesame oil, nutsand seeds, avocado, deep sea fish suchas mackerel, salmon, tuna, anchoviesand sardines.Saturated fats are found in animal productssuch as butter, cheese, whole milkand meats. High levels of saturated fatswill contribute to inflammation, whichmay contribute to a worsening of inflammatoryskin conditions such as thoselisted above. While labeled a contributingfactor to cardiovascular disease, eaten in moderation saturated fats are anacceptable part of a modern diet. With saturated fats it is quantity thatcounts here and less than 10% of dailyintake is considered acceptable. Combinedwith a diet high in antioxidantsfrom fruit and vegetables, saturated fatsdon’t pose as great a risk as Trans fats.Trans fats are created when a vegetableoil is changed from a liquid (as foundnaturally) to a solid. This is where wecome to the “ugly” category. Trans fatshave been linked to high cholesterol andheart disease. Trans fats also promoteinflammation and will worsen any skincondition. They are found in margarine, deep fried foods and processed foods. To avoid trans fats it is important toread the labels of all packaged and processedfoods. The right kind of fats support our healthand wellbeing, the wrong kinds of fatshave numerous affects from promotinginflammation to cardiovascular disease. For skin health concentrating on goodfats, minimizing saturated fats and cuttingout Trans fats is the key.For more information about natural & organicskin care products contact AnandaMahony ND at www.vitalenatural.com.au or at info@vitalenatural.com.auAs a naturopath Ananda has been involvedin the natural skin care industryfor many years. HEALTHBy Brett Gottlieb, D.C.Pain Got You Down?Get Your Head OnStraight! That’s right, you read the titlecorrectly. Getting your head onstraight may literally be what you needto get rid of that stubborn, nagging pain.Pain in your body that never goes awaycould mean that you have a blockageof nerve or blood flow to that part ofyour body that hurts. This blockagemay very well be coming from the areawhere the top of your spine connectswith your head. When the head is notsitting on top of the spine correctly, thehole in the bottom of the head will notalign properly with the hole in the topof your spine.Even a small degree of offset of theseholes can have major ramifications onthe health of the human body. Trillionsof nerve fibers are located where thehead joins the top of the spine. Any offsetof this area will most likely disruptthe nerve flow from some of these nervefibers. Prolonged disruption of nerveflow can ultimately cause pain in anybody part where these nerves travel to.The only way for the pain to go away isto re-align the head with the top of thespine. This is a very tricky thing to do.Only doctors highly trained in the alignmentof this area will no how to fix thisproblem appropriately.NUCCA stands for National UpperCervical Chiropractic Association. Oneof the functions of this association istraining in alignment of the head withthe top of the spine. The procedureused to align this area is very preciseusing a formula derived from analysisof three x-rays taken. NUCCA traineddoctors are experts in this type ofalignment procedure. One way that you might want to test tosee if your head is not in proper alignmentwith the top of your spine is bylooking at your posture. Stand in frontof a mirror with your eyes closed. Rotateyour head to the right. Now, rotateyour head to the left. Finally, bring yourhead back to where you think you arelooking straight ahead. Remember tokeep your eyes closed. Open your eyesand see if your head appears to be tiltedto one side or the other. Head tilt is asign that your head is not sitting correctlyon the top of your spine.Another sign would be head rotationeither more to the left or right of centerwhen you open your eyes. If you havetwo scales then set them side by sideand stand with one foot on each scale. Ifone scale registers 10 lbs more than theother scale then this could be anothersign as well.Often the pelvis will not be level either. You can sometimes see this by standingin front of the mirror if you look closely. The pelvis will tilt to the right or leftinstead of appearing level like it shouldbe. This occurs because the posturalcontrol center is located where the headjoins the upper spine. The entire spinewill compensate by tilting and twisting. One leg will appear shorter than theother as well. Leg length shortness ishard to see on your own body but if youlay down on the floor and have someonelook at your legs sometimes they will beable to see a short leg.If you are interested to see if your conditionis being caused by your headand neck not being in proper alignmentplease call our office at 916-965-7155for a free consultation and exam.8March Edition 2009
Will the REAL Fitness HormonePLEASE STAND UP!New Medical Research shows highintensityexercise can increase thebody’s natural production of the fitnesshormone by 530%!When I completed the research phasefor a health and fitness book in 2002,the bio-medical research was completeenough to draw hard conclusions aboutthe type of fitness program that wouldmake your body increase anti-aging,anti-MIDDLE-aging, and athletic performanceimproving HGH growth hormone- THE FITNESS HORMONE. However, the research didn’t specifically test highintensitysprints — until now!New Landmark ResearchIn a new study, researchers comparedHGH growth hormone levels in severalways — resting (for a baseline measurement),after a 6-second cycle sprint, andafter 30-second cycle sprint. Researchersalso measured growth hormone for hoursafterwards to see how long HGH stayedin participant’s bodies after exercise,(The time course of the human growthhormone response to a 6s and a 30s cycleergometer sprint, 2002, Stokes). The Results Are Incredible! The 6-second sprint method did moveHGH some, but didn’t come close to thebody’s potential to release this powerfulhormone. The 30-second all-out effortsprint experiment increased HGH by530% over resting baseline and 450%over the lesser intensity sprint.Like earlier research studies, HGHstayed elevated for 1.5 to 2 hours afterthe sprinting program. And according tothe researchers at the University of VA,the HGH released during exercise targetsbody fat for up to two hours after training.(Impact of acute exercise intensityon pulsatile growth hormone release inmen, 2000, Pritzlaff). This new research became the essence ofmy book; how to increase HGH throughspecific types of fitness training, and how tokeep the fitness hormone in your body fortwo hours after training going after body fat.By Phil CampbellThe Synergy Fitness anaerobic sprintworkout can be performed in many differentways — cycling, swimming, skiing, running, XC skiing, or even powerwalking. It can be performed in the gymon an elliptical trainer, stationary bike, recumbent bike, or a treadmill.Whatever the method used, the goal isto reach all FOUR critical HGH-releasebenchmarks during fitness training. Massagein SacramentoHEALTHTime to Get That Twinkle ToesFeeling Back Again!Your feet are more important than you realize! Supportingyour weight all day long, feet are often taken forgranted. It’s only when we feel pain in our feet that weend up paying attention to them.Ticklish? How that Affectsa Foot MassageLittle kids appear to be more connected to their feetthan adults. They love to be tickled on their feet and thetickling sensation speeds through their body resulting ina smile or a laugh. Instantly they feel stress relief.“People think they’re more ticklish than they really are. After I get done touching their little puddies, they realizejust how much they love their feet to be touched!”said Sherri Tescher, C.M.T. She’s an instructor at theFair Oaks Massage Institute who practices the art indowntown Sacramento.Experience the Benefits YourselfThe relief you feel can benefit you in these stressfultimes. We searched the area to find two well-qualifiedmassage therapists to give you the ultimate foot massageyou need and desire. And if you’re anything likeus, you may just find that the benefits include almostinstantaneous relief of stress, pain and pressure in otherparts of the body, even though only your feet weretouched. After our foot massages, our feet felt as if theydidn’t recognize our shoes – they felt that much better! The reason why benefits are so great is based on footreflexology. Six major acupuncture meridians havepressure points that begin on the bottom of the foot. The acupuncture meridians carry energy throughout thebody and to the different organs. By stimulating pointson these channels, the flow of energy in the body is oftenrestored. That’s why you’ll feel lighter than air andfull of energy after a foot massage. Everyone loves theresults of a foot massage, even senior citizens! And it’sperfect as a ‘balancing’ technique or as a way to unwindat the end of a rough day or a trying week of hard work.“There’s a point on the bottom of the foot, around themiddle that can be very helpful for relieving stressand anxiety,” said Madonna Polley, C.M.T. She’s theDirector of the Fair Oaks Massage Institute, whereclasses are taught on reflexology, sports massage,cranio-sacral therapy and other massage techniques.“When someone comes in for a massage, we oftenshow the person how to work on their own feet andhands to relieve stress and pressure.”Because the points on the bottom of the foot correlateto different organs and parts of the body, a massagetherapist will often ask you what hurts. This can givethem important information on the parts of the body towork on.What to ExpectA foot massage usually involves three different techniques:1. Specific gliding and circular movements madewith the pads of the fingers, the heel of the hand, thepalm, thumbs or knuckles2. Pressing on different points3. Crystals or hot stones can be added. The foot massage itself may be done either with orwithout oil.Western foot massages are usually performed on a table;Thai foot massages are performed on the floor or with theperson in a comfortable chair. Sometimes practitioners willwork on points on the lower leg as well. Both practitionerswe recommend do include the lower leg points. Both ofour recommended massage therapists are very gentle butcan work on a deeper level if you wish.Get ‘Grounded’Important information for thosewho are stressed, teachers, constructionworkers, professionalson their feet all day…“Foot massage is not a cure all, but it definitely helps!”Madonna said. She regularly visits hospitals and performsa foot or hand massage on the patients in theirbeds. Called in often by families, Madonna finds thatfoot massage is beneficial right after surgery.“Our feet are our connection to the earth,” she said.“Once we feel a stronger connection – which happensafter a foot massage – we feel brand new again, restoredand rejuvenated. There are parks in Asia that are stone“After these great foot massages, Ifelt like I could run a few miles…and I’m not a runner! My feet andbody have never felt better!”Editor, Health & Fitness Magazinetrails where people go just to stimulate the bottom oftheir feet. MENTAL HEALTHBy Ronda DegaustLiving in The SpaceI Call MeHave you seen any of the programson television that redesign yourhome to make you feel good? All theseprograms make me think about onething: what about redesigning anothertype of space – the space we are livingin no matter where we go? The space inwhich you live your whole life is calledthe space of you.Feng Shui Your SpaceHave you heard of feng shui (pronouncedfung shway)? This ancientprinciple states that you can achieveActual Clients...not Supermodels.perfect harmony in your surroundingsand then extend this harmony into yourlife. It is based on the concept of “chi”,or life energy, and its goal is to promotea healthy flow of this energy in anyspace you are in. In the most simpleterms, if the space you are in feels good, you feel good.Remember the last time you walked intoa room and felt totally relaxed in minutes? There was something about theroom that was inviting and made youfeel totally at home. Often the feng shuiprincipals have been applied to a roomsuch as this, whether they’re applied ata conscious level or unconscious level.“The Kaizen Design team’s creativity, expertise and professionalismhelped us develop a site that is userfriendly, aesthetically innovative andinformational. Offer ends April 15th 2009.You don’t have to be a feng shui expectto know whether your space feels goodto you or not.One of the fastest ways to make yourspace more inviting is to clear out the clutterand find a home for things you want tokeep. Clearing the clutter out allows theenergy to flow. Think of the last time youcleared a blocked pathway in one of yourrooms. How good did you feel? Most people feel better after they’vecleaned up a room in their home. De-clutteringyour space helps de-clutter yourmind and therefore reduces your stress. Why Not Feng Shui You?Did you know that the average personhas 300 negative thoughts a day?Wouldn’t you agree that that could becalled ‘clutter of the mind’? How wouldyour life be different if you applied thefeng shui principles to the space inside?Wow... how clear would your thinking beand how much harmony would you feel?Negative Thoughts DrainOur EnergyWith all these negative thoughts rollingaround inside your head, isn’t it timeto feng shui your mind too? Since youcan’t eliminate the events that happenedin your life, what do you do with all thememories associated with these events? Many of us replay these events over andover again in our mind and end up withbad feelings. These bad feelings causestress on the body and rob us of enjoyingour life to the fullest.“The problem with carrying theseworries, grudges, and resentment isthat they destroy our health insidiously.Resentment contributes andplants a seed in the development ofcancer,” said Dr. Donna Schwontkowski,(Ret.) D.C., M.S. FITNESSBy Nathan BoydFriday NightClose your eyes and imagine thisromantic setting: an intimate picnicon the beach, you and your mate enjoyingstrawberries from a fresh fruit salad, and both of you enjoying the oceanbreeze as plans are being made for yournext date. All of this, of course, afteryou jogged with your sweetie on thebeach at sunset. That’s right, “jogged”!While many couple’s idea of a romanticdate will still include a walk on the beachat sunset, other couples are increasinglyopting for inclusion of a healthful fitnessactivity instead. Around the country, these “fitness dates” have become moreand more popular as people are searchingfor a different, if not healthier, optionto the customary “dinner-and-a-movie”routine. These fitness dates can includeeverything from an actual workout togetherat the gym, to a nighttime gameof tennis, to even a canoe-by-moonlightexcursion. What’s important is that anactivity is found that both of you like todo and then use it as a platform to havesome fun and enjoy each other’s companionship.Granted, it may require adifferent mindset to appreciate a date ata gym, lake, or track as a dating alternative, but it does reap an extraordinaryamount of benefits and it can genuinelybe a lot of fun as well.To begin with, these fitness dates doallow for some actual quality time togetherfor the both of you to bond. Thistime together is yours to share and theexercise itself does release hormones inthe body that helps promote a generalfeeling of relaxation and well-being.Bottom line is that you’ll both feel betterabout yourself and will enjoy eachother’s company even more. Besides, workout sessions are always more funwhen your partner is along and that’spart of the point in even inviting a partnerwith you in the first place.Fitness dates also encourages the practiceof healthy behaviors between theboth of you. Just like the saying, “birdsof a feather, flock together”, it is a wellprovenfact that the health practices ofone partner will greatly influence thecondition of the other. Chances are thatif you and your date routinely includea fitness date into your calendar, thenboth of you are also more likely to bemaintaining a healthier lifestyle duringthe week as well.Additionally, these fitness dates tendto do amazing wonders for stimulatinga couple’s intimacy with one another.Research has confirmed that regularexercise does result in greater levelsof desire, frequency, and increasedconfidence. The increased blood flowto all body parts also enhances yourability to be aroused. Needless to say,the visual appeal of your mate workingup a sweat probably won’t dampen theattraction either. As for arranging Friday nights for yourfitness dates, just remember that thiscould also be a great, healthy way towind down at the end of your workweek. Looking forward to meetingyour date will only add to the motivation. However, if your schedule doesn’tnecessarily allow a Friday night for theboth of you to meet in a gym or attenda spinning or yoga class, then the truthis that any day or time of the week willwork as an ideal time for a fitness date.Just remember to enjoy the moment andtime together with your significant otherand have some fun!About The AuthorNathan Boyd is author of the ebook,“The Fitness Lifestyle” and the currentDirector of Pro Fitness of Texas. SKINBy Danna Schneiderpowder, which cost me not even threedollars. It is a fine white powder thatcontains about 5,000 mg. or vitamin Cper teaspoon, so it’s quite concentrated.I mixed a tiny bit of solution at a time, putting as much of the powder in asolution of water as I could with it stillstaying a solution instead of a paste, asinstructed by the sources I researched. Iwould then swab it onto the wound witha q-tip several times a day. I noticed thatwhen I applied it, it stung really bad, butonly on the wound site and not on thesurrounding skin, so I researched thisand was comforted to know that it onlykills the cancerous cells, not the healthyskin cells, so this explained why it leftthe healthy surrounding skin unaffected. Before I tell my story of how I believea very simple, extremely costeffective, and totally natural treatmentgot rid of a basal cell carcinoma skincancer, I want to clarify that I am not amedical professional, but rather simplya “lay person” who experimented withthis method. Now that that is out of the way, I’mgoing to tell you the story of my experiencewith a topical vitamin C solutionand how it got rid of my basal cell carcinomalesion within a matter of days. You see, I have a history of gettingbasal cell carcinoma skin cancers, which are not a serious form of skincancer, are extremely slow to metastasize(spread), and rarely turn intoa more serious form of invasive skincancer. Hence, their name, they stay onthe surface of the skin for the most part, and therefore could potentially go foryears without spreading. However, it isstill important to identify and removethem since there still could be a chanceof further mutation. The areas I had these skin cancers wereon my forehead, right where my skinmet my hair line, and also a spot onMy Experience withVitamin C and Basal Cell Carcinomamy chest, right between my breasts. The reason I had gone in to get themchecked out by a professional was becausethey seemed to be wounds thatwould not heal. At first I thought theone on my forehead was actually a burnfrom a curling iron, but when I noticedit has a smooth, shiny surface, and keptcrusting over and would never heal, Ibecame suspicious.A doctor referred me to a dermatologist, who removed both spots that wouldnever heal and sent them away for labtesting. They were confirmed as basalcell carcinoma skin cancers, and I wasscheduled from then on to have twiceannualcheckups for these suspiciousskin lesions, especially since I have afamily history of skin cancer.Because of this experience, I started todo self checks as well, especially lookingfor spots on my face and forehead, since those are areas that get the mostsun exposure by default because they arealways the first to face the sunlight. I hadnotice just about two months ago thatanother spot, which I initially thoughtwas a blemish, had shown up virtuallyright over where my white scar was onmy forehead from the last basal removal.I also noticed that this one was smoothand shiny, and pink, and never healedafter weeks of existence. So, I startedreading online for how to get rid ofbasal cell carcinomas naturally, with atopical Vitamin C treatment, since I hadremembered reading about this monthsago when surfing the internet readingunrelated alternative medicine news.Lo and behold, I found that many peoplereported getting rid of these minorskin cancers by simply applying a concentratedVitamin C solution, the ascorbicacid form, directly to the “tumor”two to three times a day for anywherefrom a few days to two weeks. They reportedseveral successes, with the tumorfalling off within days or weeks.I figured, what did I have to lose, andbecause I really didn’t want another scaron my body, especially on my face, andknew that if I went back to the doctorthey would surgically remove it againand put stitches in it, not to mention itwould cost me quite a bit in medicalfees even with insurance, I made thepersonal decision to forgo that and tryto get rid of this naturally, on my own.I went to a natural foods store and purchaseda quarter pound of ascorbic acidSupposedly, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid),is selectively toxic to cancer cells, atleast basal cell carcinoma cells as far asI know. This stinging and burning wenton for the next several days, and thewound turned a bright red for about twodays before it finally crusted over, andfell right off. While I never got this examined to seeif it was indeed a basal cell skin cancer,I am personally convinced that it was,and that Vitamin C was natural “cure”for it, and worked. While I couldn’t recommend this overmedical advice, I can say that I personallybelieve it worked for me, and I tookthe personal chance of not going to thedoctor’s to get it diagnosed or testedbefore “self treating”. My previous experiencemade me comfortable enoughto take this route, however, that may notbe the case with everyone, and medicaladvice should be probably be seeked outprior to taking on a treatment yourself.Danna Schneider is the owner andprimary editorial contributor of CosmeticsGalore.com,a popular beautyreview site, which reviews hair removalproducts like Ultra Hair Away, www.cosmeticsgalore.com/ultra-hair-awayreview.htmlcosmetics and other beautyproducts that are new to market. RELATIONSHIPSViewpoint Inspired...Dear Mitch,I met my current boyfriend (Tom) inLivermore, Spring of ‘06 (I’m 30; he’s29). He’s a wonderful man who supportsme emotionally, is a lot of fun,and has most of the ‘A List’ characteristicsI seek in a potential marriagepartner. I can say I definitely love Tom,though I’m starting to wonder aboutsome things! This last summer, my (Folsom resident)mother fell and dislocated hershoulder. This was after I’d already feltdrawn for the past few years to relocateto Sacramento. My brother’s a singlefather of two of the most beautifulchildren! Their mom disappeared yearsago, and my brother has said manytimes he’d love my help. My niece(his oldest) and I are particularly closesince she’s following in my footstepsas a soccer player. In September, the company I work forannounced that they were closing theoffice. My Supervisor then referred meto an associate for a position in Folsomwith better pay and benefits! So, after talking this over at lengthwith Tom (and him generally seemingto be OK with me moving here, but saying he wasn’t sure he’d everwant to leave Livermore), I relocatedto Sacramento, and accepted the newjob (which I love). Since then, I’venever been happier! I work and spendtime weekly with my brother and hischildren and my mother. I feel closer tomy mother and my brother than I everhave, and we’ve always been close!I drive to Livermore 3 weekends amonth to see Tom, and to visit with myuncle’s family and some friends. Thisreally works for me!Tom, on the other hand, claims that hemisses me too much. I don’t seem tohave much problem dealing with thelong-distance aspect. I’m not sure why,but I enjoy being able to go back andforth between Livermore and Sacramento, basically holding two separatelives. I have no intention of cheatingon Tom; I just like being able to havemy independence in Sacramento, andgoing to Livermore and sharing ourlove with Tom!I still love Tom, and I don’t want tobreak up, Mitch. I’ve planned andbooked a Mexican cruise for us thissummer, and I spent a week in Livermorewith him in January. I am alittle frustrated because he now sayshe never will leave Livermore; he’smostly attached to his buddies. Hiscompany has said he can transfer toanywhere in the US, but he’s movingnowhere. It seems that while I lovechange and to experience new citiesand learn as many things as I can, Tomis very settled. Enter: My guilt! MaybeI’m being too self-centered, because Ihave it all, the way things are. Well, Ido want to eventually get married andhave children.Mitch, PLEASE help me! Where do Igo from here? I’m starting to not likemy time with Tom as much becauseof this unsettled situation. SKIN & BEAUTYBy Danna SchneiderHome Remediesfor Tired, Dry HairSometimes a bad hair day can beall it takes to make your wholeday seem like nothing is going right. You know what I mean too, even if thisstatement sounds absurd. Why is it thatyou seem to command more positiveattention when you feel good about theway your hair looks?Well, it’s arguably because confidenceis all in your head, but it’s also true thatwell kept, shiny, lustrous and healthyhair is a true hallmark of beauty, respectand admiration in our society. Healthyshe spiesphotographylooking hair is also usually considereda sign of health. It’s the ornament thatcrowns our head, and through the goodand bad times, it’s ours to look after andtake care of the best we can.So, what if you can’t afford to bespending big bucks at the salon gettingfancy hair treatments and $50haircuts all the time? And what if youdon’t care to spend your money on thetreatments you can do at home thatsometimes run at just as high a cost, minus labor of course, that you canbuy from high end salons?Well, there’s good news, because youcan get bouncier, healthier and shinierhair by using some simple, cheap andeasy to obtain products that somepeople may even keep in their homes ashabit as a remedy against dry, dull andbrittle hair. The first is one of my favorites, and although you may have to getover the initial shock of the smell whenyou use this on your head, you will lovethe results it gives when you’re through.buildup off of the hair that’s left fromstyling products, dirt, dust, and otherenvironmental factors that lend themselvesto dull looking hair.I usually use apple cider vinegar, whichis also a great tonic for the inside ofthe body as well as many of you mayhave read or heard in the past. In fact, organic apple cider vinegar, affectionatelyreferred to by it’s dedicated usersas “ACV”, has many healing propertiesbeyond your hair if you care to everread up on that. What you can do for the vinegar hairrinse is take a good amount of the vinegarup to the shower in a cup. I’d sayabout one to one and a half cups is goodso that you can thoroughly get all ofyour hair when dousing it.I like to do my vinegar rinse before Ishampoo, because of the smell. Thiswill minimize any unpleasant odor beingleft behind in your hair, and willprep the hair for the shampoo, whichwill further cleanse it in preparation foryour conditioner. After you rinse, shampoo with a moisturizingshampoo, then condition thehair with something that is highly emollient.Finish it off with an ice cold waterrinse, and you’ll have a head of bouncy, shockingly shiny hair, and you will haveaccomplished buildup removal at thesame time, and scalp therapy as well. The second home remedy for dry ordull hair is to use beer. You can use thesame method that I went over with theapple cider vinegar for this. Beer has alot of nutrients believe it or not, that aregood for the hair, and it will also help tocleanse impurities and prep it for a goodconditioning, leaving the hair shaftsmooth so that you get maximum shineand reflection.this for the feeling of added thicknessto the hair and the fact that they are usinga pure protein on the hair which canhelp strengthen it. What food item am Ireferring to? Eggs! That’s right, you can use raw eggs(careful not to get any in your mouth!),as a mask on your hair, letting it setin your damp hair for about fifteen totwenty minutes, then rinsing it out, shampooing and conditioning.Whatever home remedy for your hairyou choose, remember that there’s almostalways a cheaper way to achievebeauty, you just have to know where inyour fridge or cupboard to find it!Danna Schneider owns several health, wellness and beauty review websitesthat also offer informative articles, tipsand advice. HEALTHStart SPRING RENEWALWith Thorough Cleansing of BodyIf the new season inspires you to springcleanyour home, you may want to add“spring cleaning” for your body as well!Just as you wouldn’t spring clean yourhome without first taking out the garbageand clearing out the clutter, neither wouldI recommend you attempt to revitalizeyour body without taking out the trash- detoxifying (cleansing) your body frominternally and externally produced toxins. The majority of the chemicals thatfind their way into our body get storedin fat. Unfortunately, they don’t staythere. The stored toxicity eventuallyworks its way into general circulationwhere it is a significant cause of diseaseand accelerated aging.Toxicity affects the body as:Functional changes manifesting as poorhealth with symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, mood swings, memory loss, muscle pain, apathy, weight problems anddepression.Pathological changes manifest as actualdiseases such as: cancer, autoimmunediseases (i.e. rheumatoid arthritis, MS,and 65 or more others), atherosclerosis, chronic fatigue, learning disorders, eczema, infertility, fibromyalgia, panic attacks,Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s,tinnitus, arthritis and digestive problems, and many others. The body has evolved an intricate systemto deal with toxicity. Unfortunately, it didnot evolve to deal with the enormous burdenthat modern life has placed upon it.Toxic compounds that the body is unableto detoxify and eliminate build upin the body, especially in the extracellularmatrix and fatty tissue. Functionaldetoxification focuses on cleansing andsupporting these tissues. The major organs of detoxification theliver/gallbladder, lymphatic system, digestivetract, kidneys and skin. The liver plays a number of different rolesin detoxification:Blood Filtration. Every minute, approximately60 fluid ounces of blood flowsthrough the liver from the intestines to remove99% of the bacteria and other toxiccompounds in the blood before it is ableto reach general circulation. Liver damagewill compromise blood filtration.Bile Production and Secretion. The liverproduces about 30 fluid ounces of bile perday, which is a carrier for cholesterol andfat-soluble toxins. Adequate dietary fiberabsorbs bile in the intestines where it iseliminated. A low fiber diet allows theseunbound toxins to be reabsorbed. The biotransformation of toxic substancesby a complex system of interrelated enzymes. The process occurs in two phases.Toxic compounds neutralized in thesephases include: pesticides, herbicides, drugs, toxins from the gut, hormones andinflammatory chemicals. If your health and vitality seems to be goingdownhill, consider your liver! Our bodies must be able to detoxify, orneutralize, toxins in the environment(chemicals, plastics, heavy metals, etc.),as well as those produced within ourown bodies. This process takes place mostly in theliver, and consists of two phases.Dr. Dicken Weatherby, ND, describes theprocess:In Phase 1 toxins are activated, whichmeans they are changed in such a way thatcarrier molecules (Phase 2) are able totransport them out of the body.Phase 1 is accomplished by a group ofenzymes called “cytochrome P450,” andPhase 2 takes place via a number of importantmechanisms which we are able totest and monitor.A Phase 1 analogy is bagging the garbagein your home and bringing it to the street. This is Phase 1.Phase 2 is when the truck picks up thegarbage and hauls it away. Both Phase 1 and Phase II detoxificationmust function adequately to neutralize toxins, and the two phases must be in balancewith each other so that the activated compoundsfrom Phase 1 cannot accumulate inthe body and cause damage.Visualize a single long tube with rushingwater flowing through it. This is Phase 1.There is a critical point when the water flowingdown the single tube divided into 6 differenttubes. Each of the separate tubes hasunique characteristics and qualities. Now the remarkable thing about the humanbody and especially the liver is thattoxins, chemicals, antigens (any moleculethat stimulates an immune response) havebeen “assigned” a specific pathway. Theirname is written on the front door of theseunique pathways. At the point where they split up each hasa specific door it has to enter. There is a problem when one of the doorsmay only be partially opened, or worse, closed, causing the named toxin for thepathway to have to share a pathway withother toxins. This overloads the co-factorsneeded to neutralize the toxic element, significantly reducing the body’s ability toclear these compounds from the body.By Dennis Godby, MA, NMDNaturopathic Medical DoctorThis can significantly reduce the body’sability to clear compounds. The good news is these blocked liverpathways are usually correctable by takingthe following three steps:• Testing to see if and where the problem isthrough detoxification profiles and groundbreakinggenetic detoxification testing• Doing a detoxification program that iswell-balanced for phase 1 and 2 liverdetoxification• Consciously reducing toxic exposureFor more information, contactDr. Dennis Godby, NMD atDrGodby@SacND.com or 916-446-2591.March Edition 200919
COVER STORYBy Dr. Donna, D.C. (ret.), M.S., M.H. and Toni Abeyta, C.M.T.ith all the advertisements aboutWhydration products, why woulda World Champion WWC fighter likeUriah Faber drink Ionized, micro-clustered,alkaline water?Answer: simple, he intends to reclaimhis title and have the extra edge to doit. So what is all the excitement aroundthis ‘Magic Water’?Because more and more athletes, studentsand people of all ages are discoveringthat this delicious substance of Hplus H plus O, seems to be making adifference in how they feel! But, makeno mistake; there is a lot of excitementaround this water. If athletes are reachingfor this magic liquid, then what cannon-athletes expect? The answer is thevery same type of benefits.“Good water makes sense to an athlete,”said World Champion WWC fighterfrom the Sacramento region, UriahFaber. When my consultant, Red Robinson, began drinking this ‘Magic Water’,I noticed a sharp increase in his energylevels. I started drinking it myself and Istill am!” Uriah said.“Also, the acid water that is also producedat the same time is not for drinkingat all, but for use as a disinfectant.Red has been bringing it to the gym touse when someone gets a scrape to helpprevent infection.”All Water Not AlikeYes, we all need water for many reasonsbut all water is not the same. That’s a secret known by professionalsports athletes who are not grabbingfor a regular glass of tap water, or evenbottled water anymore. They want ionized,micro-clustered alkaline water(special or ‘Magic Water’) to gain theextra competitive edge. They want their‘Magic Water’ that has true anti-oxidationlevels higher than even blueberries, according to the Oxidation Redox-PotentialMeter. Uriah wants it as well; itjust may contribute to his comeback forchampion belt once again in June. How Alkaline, SuperchargedMicro-cluster‘Magic Water’ is CreatedThe fact is that distilled water, reverseosmosis water, purified water and pollutedmountain streams or lakes are watersources but the molecular compositionof these waters is different in threeways from the micro-clustered alkaline‘Magic Water’ that top athletes drink.1. ‘Magic Water’ is first purified and givenan electrical charge by passing waterover electrically charged platinum andtitanium plates. Every cell in the bodyoperates on electrical charges. For example, nerve and heart cells send electricalimpulses to the rest of the body. Thebrain is electrical and everything we dostarts with an electrical impulse. Drinkingcharged water is thought to make iteasier for the body to absorb nutrients.2. In the charging process, the molecularform of water is changed from H2Oto H+ + OH-. That OH ion attracts positiveions in the body, including the positiveions that are found on the surfaceof microbes that cause disease. The OHion is also attracted to the cells and moleculesinvolved in inflammation.3. Small clusters of 5 to 6 water moleculesform in the ‘Magic Water’ andallow the cells to ‘drink them up’. Thecells drink as much water as they need. With plenty of charged water, cells canmore easily excrete waste products. The sooner they excrete waste products, the healthier they become.20March Edition 2009
Everyone Can BenefitJust as Much asProfessional Athletes“I pedal 60-mile distances during training,”said 46-year-old cyclist Tom Clemention the Davis Masters Race team.If my water bottle does not have ‘MagicWater’, I won’t recover as fast. I can tella big difference in just 1 day. One timeI didn’t have access to the water for 3weeks, and I missed it.”Pro-football star former 2x Super BowlChampion Center Chuck Thomas saysthat getting up in the morning is a loteasier than it used to be when he drinksthe ‘Magic Water’. Natural U.S. ProBody Builder Sara Heuston and CanadianWinner Wade Lightheart experiencefaster results from their training effortsafter drinking ‘Magic Water’. But theyaren’t the only ones. As long as you’rehuman, you may find similar benefits.Parents may find new ways to help theirchild’s concentration in school, just bychanging their water. And if you placetwo bowls of water – ‘Magic Water’and tap water – in front of your pets, thepets will go for ‘Magic Water’.“I think of it like this...” said RedRobinson, proudly 60, and consultantfor Uriah Faber. “Let’s say a fish isswimming in a nice clean clear waterfish tank. Someone comes along andpours in chemicals (like soda pop)twice a day. It doesn’t take long forthat fish to be stressed and developdisease. The chemicals accumulate inthe fish and its body tries to eliminatethem as waste. Before long, thosewaste products are at a high enoughconcentration that they begin changingthe environment of the tank. Thetank becomes acidic with waste. That’s when you better clean the tankor else the fish is doomed to die,” Redsaid with a chuckle.Disease States that May Have Acidic pH“The same is true with our bodies, since we hold about 10 gallons of waterinside of ourselves. Our cells are likethose fish, wanting only to swim inclean, clear waters,” he said.Water Deficits in theBody Can Cause DeathAthletes understand how low waterconsumption can cause low endurance, rapid heartbeat, elevated body temperatures, and rapid onset of fatigue. Theirperformance can decline 50% with asmall percentage of water deficits, 1-2%, in the body. A 5% deficit decreasessweating, headaches, nausea, tinglingin hands and feet and induces sleepiness. At 10-15% fluid loss, skin shrivelsand wrinkles, muscles are spastic, visiondims, and urination is painful andgreatly reduced. Delirium begins. Thefinal result of dehydration is death. Lifedepends on water.Restoring pH is Top Priorityfor Health ExpertsIt’s well known that when the bodyaccumulates any chemical, potentiallytoxic element, or even inflammatorycompounds, it will try to detoxifythem. But now with reports that theenvironment is 1000 times more toxicthan it ever was, it makes sense to believethat we have to give the body alittle help in the process.Restoring the proper pH balance is atechnique used by top alternative healthpractitioners as a primary strategy toinfluence health. One of the best waysto restore pH is by simply providingcharged water that supplies the activeand available 0H- molecules needed. The body stores fat around toxic substancesto protect itself, thus holdingextra fat stores. Releasing these toxinsalso helps to rid the body of these excessivestorage reservoirs. Ionized, alkaline,micro-clustered water can makea difference in weight loss efforts.“Since I began drinking the ‘Magic Water’, I noticed that mybody craves more water than before. My esthetician said my skinlooks hydrated and healthy and I look younger. My hair stylisthas been amazed at how conditioned my hair is now, too.”– Denise Kennedy“Even our cats drink more ‘Magic Water’ and our 19 year old cat,Max’s ears have perked up and his energy has incrased by 30%.We also feed our plants ‘Magic Water’ & they’re happy, too.”– Glen Maniscalco“Our cells are like those fish in thetank with toxins. How long can we survive? And if we do survive, what is ourquality of life?” Red said.Health care practitioners report that whensomeone is sick, testing the pH revealsthat the pH is acidic, instead of the idealalkaline 7.4 pH. It may only be off by0.5 but that’s enough to create a conditionwhere healing is slowed, aches andpains are plenty and weight won’t comeoff. When the pH is too acidic or tooalkaline the body will shut down. See thelist of diseases that can offset the body’spH in the textbox to the right.Simple Chemistryabout Water pHWater is composed of two hydrogenmolecules and one oxygen. Acidic wateris water with a greater number of Hsand a pH between 1 and 6.9. Neutralwater is water with equal numbers ofH and OH, with a pH of 7.0. Alkalinewater is water that has more OH than Hand a pH greater than 7.0.Drinking Soda? It CanAffect Your Body’s pHSoda may taste good but its ph is 2.5, farfrom 7.0 or the slightly alkaline pH of7.4 that the body loves best. It takes 32equal 8 oz. glasses of water to bring thepH to neutral with an 8 oz. glass of soda.Your body contains about 10 gallons ofwater with a pH of 7.4. A glass of sodacan lower the pH to 4.6, but luckily thebody has mechanisms to restore thepH so you don’t die! However, thosemechanisms involve using essentialminerals like calcium to restore the pH.That’s why those who drink soda popare clearly at risk for osteoporosis.Test Your Body’s Own pHHighly charged ionized water that isalkaline helps the body restore its pH.You can test this yourself by testingyour pH with pH litmus paper in yoururine or on your tongue, drinking aglass of ‘Magic Water’, and re-testing itagain. You’ll find the pH returns to idealstate. There’s nothing magical about it.It’s sheer science. And while you’re testing what happensto your body, you might as well test yourbottled water for its pH. You’ll mostlikely be amazed to find out that you arepaying for acidic pH water that is essentially‘dead’ water to the body. Alkalinizingwater and charging it along with themicro-clusters makes it come alive. Thebody’s environment then becomes conduciveto a natural state that is ideal. Peopleare often on a quest to find living water.Looking forthe Magic FountainFive million people visited the healingwaters of Lourdes, France last year, andone of them was Pope Benedict. Allwere searching for healing. All of themcame hundreds of miles in search ofliving water. Some reports state thatmiraculous Lourdes water containscharged molecules. Most likely it is alsoalkaline. Scientists studying miraculoushealing waters find them to have specialbiophysical and bio energetic properties.Wherever we go and whatever we do,we depend on water. We are ‘healed’physically, mentally and spiritually bywater. By Danna SchneiderHEALTHLow Fat DietsNot as Beneficialas Once ThoughtBenefits of Low Fat DietsIt has been studied and surmised fordecades. Low fat diets, before the lowcarb craze, were seemingly the goldenticket to good health, a trim body, andboundless energy. But new studies arestarting to cast doubt on this long-standingparadigm, paving the way for a possiblenutrition breakthrough. The specific study that prompted thenew questions was a government-fundedstudy with almost 20,000 mostly overweightpostmenopausal women. Thestudy closely monitored the women’sdiets, radically changing their eating habitsin order to subsequently lower theirrisk of cancer and heart disease. What the researchers found was lessthan compelling evidence that lowfat diets significantly altered the riskof heart disease and cancer as oncehypothesized. Some Important Facts to Point OutAbout the Low Fat Diet StudyWhile the results of the studies admittedlywere not stellar, scientists stillacknowledge there were other factorsin their control group of overweight, postmenopausal women which mayhave negatively impacted the outcomeof the studies. For one, due to the women’s age, theywere, in essence, trying to reverse yearsof bad eating which may have alreadycaused irreparable damaging effects ontheir health. Although most of the controlgroup on the low fat diet did initiallylose a few pounds, most of themcontinued to retain too much weight. However, the diet prescribed was notdirectly designed for weight loss, butinstead put an emphasis on dietary fatreduction rather than calorie restriction. This fact kept the weight on most of thetest subjects, and excess weight in itselfis a high risk factor for most cancersand heart disease.Important Final Note on LowFat DietsResearch has still suggested that a balanced, low calorie diet, with a healthydose of “good” fat is the best way tosecure a future that is healthy and diseasefree. Not only that, but before youbreak open the Ho Ho’s and Twinkies, high fat diets are still considered one ofthe most dangerous, and people who eata lot of fat consistently have shown upwith a higher incidence of heart diseaseand cancer. To find the best diet for your lifestyle,I recommend you take a look at thefollowing three diet plans for the besthealthy eating principles for longevity, health, disease prevention and energy.By the way, none of them are consideredto be “low fat”, but rather theyfocus on keeping the fat in your dietlimited only to heart healthy fats whichactually aid the body in staying healthyrather than clog it up.1.) FITNESSBy Michelle D. Karis,Physical TherapistTennis!Strengthen Your Core, TightenYour Rear, Meditate – Or JustPlayCore muscle strengthening is all the rage these days. As a physical therapisti know and support the importance of strengthening your core muscles. As a tennis player i know you can do this without a floor mat. Finding asport like tennis where you can have fun and get core muscle strengtheningwithout even noticing is a great way to exercise. Core muscles are theabdominal or stomach muscles - we have several layers of them. Most people whenthey talk of the core muscles mean the deeper layers. And that’s not all; you can tighten your rear end. Just running after the ball will getthose gluteus maxumus muscles working. You can also work on your meditationskills at the same time. Multi-tasking at its best. These are just some of the benefits you’ll receive while playing tennis. When youstart loving the game, you won’t even notice how hard you are working.I’ve read articles about how you have to get in shape to play tennis. I say, playtennis to get in shape! I understand the importance of fitness for competitive playersbut when you just want an activity to do to keep you mobile and feeling good, thendo something you like to do instead of forcing yourself to do exercises you don’tenjoy or worse, feel guilty about not doing. As we age one of the most important factors in staying healthy is exercise. Oneof the most important factors for maintaining your exercise routine is enjoymentand motivation.Playing a sport that you love is a great way to exercise. You needn’t “get in shape”to play tennis. Of course, you can if you want to and you may want to after you getinto it. Otherwise, a gradual tennis warm-up such as starting with mini tennis(mini tennis is rallying within the service squares) and then warming up your strokes, including your serve, slowly at first and gradually putting more speed and powerbehind the ball is a great way to warm up. If you feel obligated to stretch, do so aftertennis when your muscles are warmed up. Stretching before an activity decreases thepower generated by your muscles. And there’s more! Here are some more benefits of playing tennis:– It is a great way to socialize and have fun with like-minded friends.– This weight bearing exercise is a great for your bones so it helps preventosteoporosis.– You get all the benefits of regular exercise - you start to feel great- moreenergy – sleep better – your mood improves and you look forward toexercising instead of making excuses why you can’t.– You can practice mindful meditation (this is when you are totally concentratingon what you are doing at the moment) by concentrating on say, the sound of the ball,or staring at the ball, or just noticing your breathing. By doing this you will noticethat your tennis is actually better because you aren’t thinking about your stroke orwhat you have to get done today. It’s like taking a vacation without leaving town.Start with doing it for one point every once in a while and then for longer and longerperiods. It helps relax the mind and you’ll enjoy the tennis even more.If you don’t notice any improvement in your stomach muscles, take a lesson and thetennis pro will show you how to hit the ball while using your body. You’ll be hittingharder with less stress on your arm, as well.Just like any exercise, 3 times a week is recommended and because you are havingfun you don’t notice that 4 to 6 weeks have gone by but you are starting to notice thebenefits. If you can’t manage 3 times a week start with once a week. Remember, nopressure, if you are not having fun, find another sport you love! How much fun can you handle when exercising?Michelle d. Food ResearchStraight from the Mouthof the IndustryBy Dr. DonnaNUTRITIONWith every problem comes a potentialsolution. That solution cansometimes make a company millions. In the food industry there are manyproblems, and food manufacturers arealways attempting to solve them. Thismonth, learn about 5 problems the foodindustry has created solutions for.1. E.coli and Salmonella inbags of spinach. In 2007,Americans consume 12 timesmore fresh spinach than processedspinach than in 1970, a healthy andsmart choice. However, in the last fewyears, outbreaks of food poisoning havedeterred some people from taking achance on consuming the Popeye food.Fresh spinach is washed before baggingit, and a sanitizer such as chlorine isusually used in the process. The problemis that chlorine has a minimal effectin killing bacteria. But now, food scientists have discoveredthat ozone may do a better job.Scientists found that packaging withozone reduced E.coli bacteria and thelargest reduction in bacterial count werefound after 24 hours storage. The ozonedissipated within 24 hours and did notaffect food quality. Further research willbe completed before changing over tothis new method.Source: Food Science and Technology, Safetyand Quality Assessment of Packaged SpinachTreated with a Novel Ozone-Generation Systemby P.A. Klockow and K.M. Keener.Food-bourne illness causes 350,000 hospitalizationsand 5000 deaths per yearin the U.S. And humans aren’t the onlyones impacted by this health issue. Lastyear the U.S. tomato industry lost an estimated$200 million during the outbreakwhen consumption plummeted.2. Bacterial Contaminationin Beef, Chicken, Milk andSeafoodNo one knows the effects of bacterialcontamination better than the Orient, asthe damaging effects of food poisoningincidents are still fresh in people’s minds.Foodbourne disease outbreaks in Taiwanhave included Salmonella, Listeria, E.coli, Staph, and Bacillus cereus. Researchersat two Taiwanese universitiesmixed brain waves and tested the use ofroselle calyx extracts against test bacteriain ground beef and apple juice. Theirresults showed that the extracts could beconsidered effective against Salmonellaand E.coli in beef and apple juice.Source: Foodbourne Pathogens and Disease,Antibacterial Effects of Roselle CalyxExtracts and Protocatechuic Acid in GroundBeef and Apple Juice. C. Chao and M. Yin.3. Chemical in Baby Bottlescausing potential danger tochildren.Officials in New York voted unanimouslyto ban the packaging chemical,bisphenol-A content from polycarbonatebaby bottles. Other states are expectedto follow New York’s lead. Similar billsare already in consideration in Minnesota,Connecticut and Washington. Formore information and a free downloadablereport on why California and otherstates need to do the same, visitwww.drdonna.info.4. Is it Organic Milk or Isn’t It?In Germany, the consumption of organicmilk has reached 11% of the marketfor all fresh milk. The popularity andhigh demand has created shortages andthere’s a risk that some unscrupulouscompanies could label their productorganic when in reality it’s not. Scientistsresearched what was differentabout organic milk, thinking that theremust be some compound or nutrient inthe organic milk that wasn’t in the nonorganicmilk. If they found that compound,it could be used as a test for organicorigin. Smart scientists traced thecorn fed to cattle herds and discoveredthat organic herds eat a C4 plant whilenon-organic herds eat a C3 plant. Usinga radioactive labeled isotope, they werethen able to differentiate which milktruly was organic.Scientists also examinedthe C18: 3 omega 3 bond in the fatof the milk and could tell organic impostersby their content level of C18:3omega3 which was less than 0.5%.Source: Journal of Agriculture and FoodChemistry, 2009, 57 (3), 785-590.5. Consumers Want Antioxidants...and food manufacturers are going togive them to them by adding food extractsinto the foods they create. Someof the organic extracts created include:• acerola, contains vitamin C, used forenergy and vitality• artichoke leaf, contains cynarin forweight loss and helps lower cholesterol• purple carrot contains antioxidants thatquench free radicals and also anthocyaninsthat help diabetics and improve vision6. Consumers Hate SyntheticGrowth Hormone (rBST) intheir Dairy ProductsThe demand for natural foods is growingby leaps and bounds in America. Consumersare tired of being guinea pigs forthe chemical industry. The dairy industryis ‘owned’ by General Mills and Dannonwho claim about 66% of all sales. RBSTis created by Monsanto Corporation. Itwas approved by the FDA in 1993 foruse in increasing milk production in cattle.General Mills and Dannon have committedto move away from milk sourcedfrom rBST-treated cows as a direct resultof consumer demand.Source: DecisionnewsmediaDr. Donna is the editor of Health & FitnessMagazine and holds a master’s andbachelor’s degree in food and nutrition.March Edition 200927

By Greg PodsakoffHEALTHColon Cleaning May HelpAcne SufferersMany doctors and alternativemedicine practitioners believethat one essential component ofachieving overall health is havinga colon that is clean and free of thetoxins that can build up over time. Manyof these same doctors and alternativemedicine practitioners believe that oneof the benefits of colon cleansing is theimprovement of acne conditions. One type of colon cleansing is colonhydrotherapy. This cleansing processinvolves the gentle bathing of the largeintestine, or colon. The purified warmwater that is used during colon hydrotherapyhelps to remove the poisons, toxic materials, and build-up of wastefrom the body.Unlike an enema, which only cleans thefirst two feet of the large intestine withonly a relatively small amount of water,a colon hydrotherapy treatment cleansthe colon with between 15 and 25 gallonsof water. This varies depending onthe machine used, with some machinesusing only 6 – 8 gallons per session. Thiswater cleans the entire colon and reachesdifficult areas and areas where fecal mattertends to gather and build up.Colon hydrotherapists often recommendthat hydrotherapy treatments bereceived in conjunction with appropriateherbal remedies.Effective colon hydrotherapy treatmentsremove not only fecal material, but alsoexcess mucus, bacteria, and parasites.Therapy treatments help to restore thecolon to its original shape, which can getdistorted over years of accommodatingthe build up of waste. The restoration of the colon to its originalshape helps it to move out wastematerials more effectively. Hydrotherapytreatments can also help the body haveregular bowel movements without thedisturbance of constipation and diarrhea. Those who practice colon hydrotherapytruly believe that this practicerejuvenates the body as a whole. Theremoval of toxins and poisons helpsthe body to alleviate many health problemslike fatigue, frequent headachesor stomachaches, weight problems, allergies, and various skin conditionssuch as psoriasis and acne.Colon hydrotherapy treatments also helpthe colon do its job better in the future, excreting wastes more efficiently andkeeping polluting toxins out of the body.A colon that is working more efficientlyis one that helps maintain overall bodyand skin health. We don’t often think about it, but theskin is actually the body’s largest excretoryorgan. When the colon is cloggedwith fecal matter, bacteria, and other toxinsand waste material, the skin begins toact as an excretory substitute.Because problematic skin is so often anindication of unhealthy colon in need ofcleansing, antibiotics, skin medications, and topical creams may not work well tocorrect the problem.Vitamin A is of vital importance tooverall skin health, and to maintainingskin that is free of acne and other conditions.Dietary Vitamin A enters the bodylargely through absorption through thewalls of the large intestine, or colon. The colon, in a state of ill health, hasa difficult time absorbing adequateamounts of Vitamin A. A healthy colonthat has received cleansing hydrotherapywill more effectively absorb VitaminA, helping the skin to maintain clarityand good health. Many people who suffer from variousskin problems, such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema, find that their skinconditions improve after colon hydrotherapytreatments.Greg Podsakoff is a former acne sufferer, and currently provides information ontreating acne, pimples, and zits, via anobjective informational skincare website,www.acne-treatments-guide.com.Editor’s Note: Looking for a colonhydrotherapist in Sacramento? By Dr Jenny TyleeHEALTHCommon Herb & Medical DrugInteractionsMany people who take pharmaceuticalmedication also want totake some herbal remedies. However, there can be difficulties with this as thechemicals in the two preparations caninteract – changing the effect of thepharmaceutical drugs and the herbs. Ifyou are taking medical drugs you needto be aware of potential interactionswith herbs. Herbs can in many instancesprovide a safer alternative to pharmaceuticalmedication (especially whenother measures to improve health arealso undertaken). However, because ofthe potential for interactions it is wiseto be under the supervision of a healthprofessional as you make changes. The following is a list of common potentialinteractions between medicaldrugs and herbs.• Anti-hypertensive dugs – used to lowerblood pressure. Grapefruit juice mayenhance the effect by reducing its metabolicbreakdown. Vitamin B3, magnesiumand calcium can also enhance theeffect of anti-hypertensives.• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAID). NSAIDs are known to irritatethe gastrointestinal lining and are linkedto the development of intestinal ulcers. This means that they need to be avoided. However, if you are taking NSAIDthen avoid anything else that is likely toincrease the irritation of the intestinallining. This includes all alcohol, coffeeArabica and uva-ursi.• Corticosteroids such as prednisone andcortisone. These drugs are used for theiranti-inflammatory effects and are immunesuppressing. Using with immunestimulating herbs such as astragalus, echinacea, licorice root, alfalfa sprouts, and zinc lozenges may offset the immunosuppressiveeffects.• Cyclosporine – sandimmune (an antibiotic).Grapefruit juice may causeincreased cyclosporine levels and St.John’s wort may decrease levels.• Digoxin - lanoxin (a heart drug). Someherbs are digoxin-like and have thesame effect as the medical drug. Takingthese herbs together with digoxin is liketaking an overdose. These herbs includehawthorn berry, foxglove and Siberianginseng. Aloe vera, taken in large doses, can irritate the intestine and cause apurgative effect. If this is severe enough– with loss of sufficient fluid there canbe a decrease in serum potassium levelsand problems with the heart beat. Also avoid using it with quinine, whichmay increase digoxin levels. (Quinineis found in tonic water.) Avoid using itwith the herb licorice root (this is theherb and not the candy), as its diureticeffect can result in low potassium levelsand toxicity. Fibers, such as psyllium, decrease digoxin absorption, within twohours of taking medication.• Diuretics – acetazolamide, thiazides(fluid tablets). There are many herbsthat have a diuretic effect. These includeartichoke, goldenseal, celery seeds, anddandelion. These herbs will increase thediuretic effect of the medical drugs.• Hypoglycemic agents – glucotrol, glucophage, diabeta, insulin. (Used tocontrol blood sugar levels). There areherbs that contain hyper or hypoglycemiccomponents. These include: broom, buchu, dandelion, juniper, karela andthe minerals chromium, vanadium andmagnesium. Some of these improveglucose tolerance.• Phenobarbital – ancalixir, barbital, solfoton, luminal sodium. Herbs containingthujones and vitamin B6 maylower seizure threshold. Wormwoodmay potentiate phenobarbital effects.• Lithium - Butcher’s broom, buchu, dandelion and juniper may enhancethe effect of lithium and cause possibletoxicity.• Phenytoin – dilantin, phenytex. Ayurvedicpreparation shankapulshipi diminishesanti-epileptic effect.• Thyroid medication – synthroid. Largequantities of horseradish may depressthyroid function. Kelp contains iodine, which may result in excess thyroidlevels when taken with thyroid replacementmedications.• Warfarin, coumadin, sofarin (bloodthinners). There are many herbsthat act as blood thinners andthese taken with the medical drugscan result in increased bleeding. Some of these herbs include cayenne, feverfew, garlic, ginger, white willowbark (aspirin), St John’s wort, alfalfa andginkgo biloba. Taking over 1000 IU ofvitamin E or the papaya enzyme papainmay also result in increased bleeding.High doses of herbs such as dong quai, quinine and devil’s claw may causedecreased blood thinning activity. Highdoses of vitamin C, A and K may alsoresult in lessened anticoagulant effect. The list above contains some of thecommon potential interactions betweenmedical drugs and herbs. There are potentiallymany more. This does not meanthat you shouldn’t use herbs if you aretaking medical drugs. You should howeverunderstand the potential effects.E StreetDr Jenny Tylee is an experienced healthprofessional who is passionate abouthealth and wellbeing. PETSBy George ShearsA New Nutritional Approachfor Both Pet Allergiesand Allergies to PetsA New Understanding of AllergiesAllergies of all kinds seem to be onthe rise–both for people and for theirpets. The exciting new science of Glycobiologypoints strongly to a common basisfor many of these allergies; and the revolutionarynew nutritional technology ofglyconutrition, which has developed fromthis new science, is proving to be a veryeffective and natural way to help both petsand their owners get marked relief fromtheir allergies.A recent 12-year longitudinal study withpeople who began the study as young, healthy adults found that the functionallevel of their immune systems declined onaverage at the rate of about 3% per year. This rapid decline is correlated with a correspondingincrease in the incidence of autoimmunediseases and a proliferation of allergiesof all kinds--including allergies to pets.Ironically, however, pets also are commonlyafflicted with stubborn allergies that are asource of much distress and expense fortheir owners. And, very commonly just aswith their owners, medical interventions thatmainly focus on treating the symptoms arequite ineffective. The findings of Glycobiology suggest thatthis prevailing approach may be barking upthe wrong tree, so to speak, and that a nutritionalintervention that, instead, suppliesthe body with crucial micronutrients that arelacking is likely to be far more effective.$3 OFF Grooming (expires 3/31/09)15% OFF Pet Supplies (expires 3/31/09)Glycobiology has now established that everycell in the mammalian body requires eightnecessary sugar molecules in order to functioneffectively. These sugars combine withprotein and fat molecules into glycoformsthat attach themselves to the surfaces of everycell in the body. Under an electronmicroscope, they look like weird trees growingon the cell surface. One of their mostimportant functions there is to allow cells tocommunicate effectively with each other. To the degree that these “super sugars” aredeficient, cell-to-cell communication tendsto break down and some form of illnessstarts to develop. An insufficiency of these sugar moleculesis particularly disastrous for the immunesystem, because it causes the cells of the immunesystem to become, in effect, partiallyblind. These cells can then become over-reactivein attacking allergens of all kinds andeven in attacking the tissues of the body; onthe other hand, ironically, they may becomeunder-reactive in attacking true pathogensthat are serious threats to the body.Unfortunately, six of these crucially-importantsugar molecules are seriously lacking in themodern diet. They are commonly found, however,in vine-ripened fruits and vegetables andalso in many of the wild foods that our stoneageancestors consumed in abundance. When these glyconutrients, as they are calledtechnically (glyco from the Greek word for“sweet”), are provided in adequate quantityto the body through supplementation, all ofthe cells in the body start functioning muchmore effectively. This is especially true forcells in the immune system. As cell-to-cellcommunication improves in this system,it tends to become better modulated--thatis, less likely either to over- or under-react.Correspondingly, allergies and auto-immuneconditions tend to diminish or disappear.Just as these crucial glyconutrients are lackingin the modern diet for humans, they aresimilarly deficient in nearly all commercialpet food, which is also loaded with artificialdyes, preservatives and additives. Theancestors of our canine and feline pets--justlike our human ancestors--have spent eonseating wild, natural foods, and this is whattheir systems are designed for. It is only inthe last several decades that they--alongwith their owners--have been exposed tocommercially prepared foods, as well as thechemicals these foods contain - chemicalsthat their bodies (as well as ours) cannottolerate. In addition, artificial ingredients inthese foods can trigger an immune responsethat, quite literally, can make pets sick.An Example of Applying thisNew ApproachThe following true story illustrates just howeffective glyconutrition can be in helping torestore balance to a pet’s over-reactive immunesystem.Ted, a Golden Retriever, is the pride andjoy of his owner, Mary. His chronic, severeear infections and skin rash, therefore, distressedher very much. She consulted withvarious Veterinarians and tried every kindof treatment she heard of to get them undercontrol. But nothing worked. When a friend recommended glyconutritionalsupplements as a possible remedy, she was very skeptical. After giving Ted ateaspoon of glyconutritional powder, mixedwith ice cream, once a day for about twoweeks, however, his ear infections and hisskin rash went away. Her skepticism continued, however, so she stopped giving it tohim when her supply of these natural sugarsran out. Almost immediately, his ear infectionsand skin rash came back.Still skeptical, Mary got some more of thisproduct and resumed the previous regimen;and again, after just a few days, all of hissymptoms went away. Around this time, aclose friend and dog lover who knew Tedvery well and who didn’t know that he wasreceiving this daily supplement, commentedto Mary that she had never before seen hiscoat looking so healthy and shiny. And then,as they both observed Ted more closely, theynoticed to their surprise, that he had growneyelashes that he didn’t have previously!Ted then continued to be symptom-free fora period of several months. But then, onceagain, when the supplement supply ranout, Mary thought that he might not need itanymore. But, again, all of his symptomsquickly returned when she stopped givingit to him. She then quickly started him onthis nutritional regimen once again, and thishas continued to be a part of his daily dietto the present time, about two years since hefirst started. He remains completely free ofhis original symptoms and both he and hisowner are delighted. After examining him, aVeterinarian who had treated him unsuccessfullyfor many years, was very impressedand decided to try this new nutritional approachwith some of her other pet clients.Impressive though they are, very similar resultshave been reported for animals subjectto a wide array of health challenges that havealso received glyconutrients. Some of theseresults have been presented on an audiotapeby Arthur Young, DVM, a homeopathic Veterinarianwith over 50 years experience. By Deena CarusoPETSWitnessing your precious dog or cathaving a seizure can be a mostfrightening experience. During seizurespets often lose control, fall over, chomptheir teeth, salivate or drool, whine, paddle with their feet, and begin to urinateor deficate on themselves. Their eyes becomelarge (dilated) and unresponsive. Apet caregiver feels panicked and helplesswhile watching it all happen.Hopefully, you and your pet have never, and will never, have to experience thisshocking event. But, if you have, or ifyou experience it in the future, this articlewill help you to understand what causesseizures, what you can do while your petis having a seizure, and the various treatmentoptions available. What causes seizures? Epilepsy is onecause. Certain dog breeds are more susceptibleto epilepsy. These include: cocker spaniels;poodles; collies; German shepherds;Irish setters; golden retrievers; dachshunds, labrador retrievers, Saint Bernards, miniatureschnauzers, siberian huskies, and wirehairedterriers. Veterinarians are not surewhat causes this “hereditary” epilepsy. In cats hereditary epilepsy is unusual. Vetscan normally find the cause of seizures. These include chemical toxins (whichincludes chemical preservatives used inmany pet foods), brain tumors, feline leukemia, feline infections, peritonitis, felineAIDS, head trauma, and problems withthe liver and kidneys. In dogs there are many causes of seizuresbesides hereditary epilepsy. Allergies tofood and the chemicals, preservatives, and artificial flavors put into the foods cancause seizures. Other causes include liverand kidney disease, tumors, poisonings, and low blood sugars.in PetsIf possible take notes about the seizureso that you can give details to your vet.Jot down the time of day it occurred, thelength of each seizure, and the time inbetween each seizure if they are recurrent.Your vet will also want to knowwhether your pet urinated or defecated,if the seizure hit suddenly or progressedfrom mere body twitching, whether yourpet regained consciousness, and how longit took before your pet appeared normalagain. In addition, you’ll need to figureout whether there were any possible triggeringevents. These include loud noisessuch as fireworks, unusual items that wereeaten, and excessive playing or exercise. After the seizure, pets usually appear lostor drugged. This drugged state can last afew minutes to several hours dependingon the severity of the seizure. Your petmay respond to you, but do so in a veryslow manner. Since seizures are exhaustingfor your pet, he will probably want tosleep afterwards. It is best to allow him tosleep, but check in on him occasionallywithout disturbing his rest.If this is your pet’s first seizure, call yourvet as soon as possible. Some vets willwant to see if another seizure occurs, while others will perform a variety ofblood tests to check for anemia, liver &heart functions, calcium, glucose, andelectrolyte levels. Your vet may even runa screen for possible toxins, take x-rays,or perform an electroencephalogram. The test results may not indicate the specificreason for the seizure. In this case, your vet may wait to see if another seizureoccurs or he/she may suggest medications. If the diagnosis is epilepsy, petshave an excellent chance to live a normallife as long as proper medical care andfollow-up are provided. What can you do if your pet’s seizure conditioncannot be cured and you realize youand your pet may have to live with theseizures? In the past, the only treatmentoptions available were strong anticonvulsantsthat could have serious side effects. These still may be your only option. But,more natural approaches have been foundto help some pets, either prior to strongermedications or in addition to them so thatyou may be able to lower the dose. Thereare a variety of treatment options thatinclude a natural diet, acupuncture, nutritionalsupplements, homeopathy, herbs, and conventional medications. As mentioned above, give your pet a humangrade diet, free of chemicals andadditives. Also, remove other toxins fromyour pet’s environment. Clean with naturalproducts and use more natural flea, tick, and heartworm prevention measures.Minimize stress in your pet’s life. Try toavoid sudden changes in his environment, loud noises, and other stressful situations. You can also try herbs that act as sedatives. These include valerian root, kava, skullcapand oatstraw. Note that when using herbsand supplements, you may need to lowerthe dosage of other anticonvulsants.Several supplements appear to help inpreventing seizures. Try an antioxidantcombination of Vitamin C, E, B-6, andselenium. Your vet can recommend thedosage for your pet. Magnesium andDMG (dimethyl glycine) are other helpfulsupplements.Acupuncture is another helpful optionthat has helped to control seizures inmany pets. Sometimes just placing an earacupuncture tack in a dog’s ear will stopseizures, and this only requires one acupuncturevisit. If the ear tack doesn’t work, gold implantscan be placed in different locationsunder a pet’s head. Or your petcan be treated with traditional Chineseacupuncture. As you can see, there are many naturalapproaches to treating seizures in pets. These should help your beloved pet tolive a normal and comfortable life.Deena Caruso, author, teacher, & distributorof natural pet products Helps pet ownerscreate healthy, happy pets. This is hard to do,but using a calm, reassuring quiet voice willcomfort your dog or cat. Move any furnitureor other objects on which your pet couldhurt itself. If you’re unable to move the object, place pillows or wrap blankets betweenthe pet and the object. Slide something softunder your pet’s head, but be sure to keepyour hands and face away from his head sothat you don’t risk a possible bite. You cangently stroke his hip or side, but positionyourself opposite the side of the feet andtoenails as the muscle spasms make the feetcurl into claws that can gouge or rake yourskin. Dim the lights, and keep the environmentas quiet as possible by turning off theTV and loud music. If you discover the cause of the seizure, you may be able to eliminate future seizuresby eliminating the seizure’s source. For instance, if the seizure is due to chemicaltoxins, make sure your pet remains asfree of toxins as possible. Provide humangrade food and treats that do not containchemical preservatives, fillers, or byproducts.Clean your house with chemical-freeproducts. Also, use more natural flea, tick, & heartworm prevention products assome of these products may lower yourpet’s seizure threshold and make seizuresmore difficult to control. Avoid productscontaining organophosphate insecticides. For safer heartworm prevention, use productscontaining interceptor and filaribits.March Edition 200935
SKINBy R. DrysdaleSKIN & BEAUTYBy Rebecca PrescottRemovingAge SpotsThe problem of removing age spotsis not as difficult as the removal ofmoles and birth marks because age spots,or liver spots, develop much closer to thesurface of the skin. The melanin pigmentthat gives moles and many birthmarkstheir brown color is produced in the deeplayers of the skin, just as the ink for atattoo is introduced into the deep layerswhere skin cells are not regularly shedand replaced in the natural process ofskin healing and regeneration. To understand how to get rid of agespots, it helps to know that, although thecolor is still being produced by melaninproduction, the cells producing themelanin lie closer to the surface and canoften be literally peeled away and replacedby healthy skin cells from below. This is why using acid peels or liquidnitrogen for removing age spots, treatmentsthat remove the top layer of skin, are relatively successful. Even withthese treatments, however, the continuingappearance of liver spots may be anongoing problem because these areas ofdark pigment are the result of overexposureto the sun.Other commercial products that arecommonly used for removing age spotscontain bleaching agents - chemicalsthat react to the melanin to removethe brown color. Creams containinghydroquinone are bleaching creams;hydroquinone has been used for thispurpose for many years, though someresearchers question the safety of usingthis chemical over the long term.Because of these doubts, and because ofthe harshness of liquid nitrogen or acidtreatment, many people look to naturalremedies for the answer to how to getrid of age spots. The most promising of the current naturaltreatments use antioxidant vitaminsas agents for removing age spots. Asa group, Vitamins A, C, D, E and theminerals selenium and zinc, taken assupplements and applied topically tothe skin, are recommended for goodskin health. Of these, Vitamins A and Cseem to be the stars for evening out skintone. Applied as a daily topical cream, these vitamins appear to gradually fadeareas of darker skin tone over time. Theresearch on this is relatively recent, andthe way it works is still not fully understoodbut it looks promising as a naturalremedy for how to get rid of age spots.More traditional means of removingage spots have mostly used acidic fruitjuices applied as daily washes, or appliedby laying pieces of fresh fruit on the affectedskin. While most explanationsdescribe how to get rid of age spots byremoving the top layer of skin with acidicfruit (like the acid washes discussedabove), it’s tempting to suggest that thetypically high Vitamin C content of acidfruits might play a role in the success ofthese traditional treatments.Regardless of which treatment youchoose for removing age spots, use careand good judgment: if you experienceredness or other irritation discontinuethe treatment; if the spot you are treatinglooks unusual or appears to grow, see amedical doctor immediately; as always, protect your skin from the sun, thesource of most skin damage as we age.R. Withsome forms of hair loss, due to stressor poor nutrition, pharmaceuticaltreatments may not be necessary.Aromatherapy oils have been usedsuccessfully by some people to treatthinning hair and bald patches. Thearoma blend is massaged into thescalp for two minutes each night, andthen the scalp is wrapped in a towel,to increase absorption of these oils. The essential oils suitable for treatingalopecia include ylang ylang, roman chamomile, rosemary, lemon, lavender, grapefruit, and bay. Try thisblend of oils:• 3 drops of lavender• 3 drops of rosemary• 2 drops of thyme• 2 drops of Atlas cedar woodYou can’t put essential oils directlyonto the skin or scalp, they have tobe mixed in a carrier oil. Use a halfa teaspoon of jojoba oil and 4 teaspoonsof grapeseed oil. Mix themall together and rub this mixture intoyour scalp for at least two minutes.Use a warm towel to wrap your headin afterwards. Not only does it feelrelaxing, but it helps the oils absorb. If you have thinning hair, chancesare you need to address a nutritionalimbalance. Increase these nutrients inyour diet:• Flaxseed - As well as providingsupport to all the cells in your body, flaxseed is rich in alpha linolenic acid, which is one of the Omega 3 fatty acids. This makes hair shine, and its also greatfor treating dandruff.• Pumpkin seeds, oysters, and nuts- These are great food sources of zinc.Zinc is needed for strong hair and normalhair growth. It has the added benefitof being great for your brain andconcentration.• Cucumber and oats - These foodsare fantastic sources of silica. Silicais important for hair health, and isused when hair splits easily, or startsto thin. Silica is also great for skinhealth - it’s a real beauty mineral. Ifyou don’t want to eat a bowl of porridgein the morning, you can get silicasupplements. Get the gel form as it isabsorbed much more easily than theherbal varieties like horsetail.• Edible Seaweed, parsley, tofu, sesameseeds, sunflower seeds - Iron is importantin hair health, and these foods are richin it. An iron deficiency causes hair loss. But if you’re thinking of taking an ironsupplement, get your iron levels testedby your doctor first as iron is a fat solublevitamin which means that it is storedin your body. This can lead to a toxicbuild up if too much iron is taken in.• Eggs, fish and chicken - Hair is madeof protein. So, if you’re deficient inprotein, your hair health may be affected. These are good, healthy sourcesof protein.• Brown rice, nuts and seeds - Theseare rich in the B vitamins. As well asbeing great for stress, the B vitaminsstrengthen the hair shaft. If you’re goingto take a B vitamin supplement, geta B complex rather than individual Bvitamins as taking too much of one Bvitamin can cause an imbalance in therest of the group. The B vitamins worktogether synergistically.• Leafy greens - Leafy greens, as wellas having lots of other vitamins, arerich in folic acid. Folic acid is a type ofB vitamin.Rebecca Prescott is a freelance writer. Some of his articles can be found onwww.ezinearticles.com36March Edition 2009

SKIN & BEAUTYBy Danna SchneiderPerfectPedicures & Magnificent Manicures:A “How To”Shopping List for SuccessHow to Get Salon QualityManicures and PedicuresSummer time is once again upon us.Gone are the thick socks and stiflingshoes, and in are the feet-baring sandalsthat adorn your shoe closet. You knowwhat that means ladies. Pedicure Time!Oh, and while we’re talking about pedicures, most of these pointers also applyto manicures.1. Cuticle Stick2. Cuticle Oil or Conditioner3. Fast Drying Base Coat4. Fast Drying Top Coat5. Buffer6. Large Emory BoardThe first thing you need to do is tomake sure you start off with cleannails. Clean nails will help the nailpolish to bond better with the nail, andhelp ensure a lasting finish. If you haveany nails that are obviously longer thanall of the others, then I suggest you usea small pair of nail scissors, not clippers,to give them a trim before anythingelse is done. The reason I don’t suggest using clippers,at least on your hands, is that theytend to make fragile nails split, becausethey do not “bend” with the nail when itis cut off, which stresses the rest of thenail and can cause splitting and breakingdown the line. Once the nails haveall been evened out with a pair of nailscissors, the filing begins.Begin with an emory board style nailfile, not metal. It is easier to use the largeremory boards rather than the small, because it covers more surface area andtends to be more easily manipulated.Gently file the rough edges of the nails, angling it only slightly around the outeredges, for a somewhat “squared off”look. You don’t want the nails too rounded, since nails typically grow better andfaster when they are kept in a squaredshape, but you can use your judgementas to your shape preference.Next, using a rubber tipped cuticlestick, gently shape the cuticles. Somepeople have barely any cuticle at all,and can skip this step. Others mayhave thicker, more noticeable cuticlesand they are the ones that need to focuson grooming them more. One you’veshaped and gently pushed back yourcuticles, dab a drop of conditioningcuticle oil and rub in.Use a makeup brush and dust off anydust leftover from filing. You may evenwant to go wash your hands so thatnone of the nail dust or the cuticle conditionerinterferes with the applicationof the polish. The next step is crucialto the longevity of your manicure andpedicure, since it forms a base, whichprovides optimal adherence of your polishto your nail surface.Use a nail buffer, or the buffing side ofyour nail file, and lightly buff the surfaceof your nails, just enough so thatyou do not see as much luster on thesurface as you usually would. Now, takeyour preferred sheer or clear base coatpolish and slick a light layer of it on.Wait a full minute and half at least, andthen you may begin to apply your nailcolor of choice. This next step is also very importantto the longevity of your manicureor pedicure, as it seals you polishin a hard armor which is very toughto chip. Using the top coat of yourchoice, slick one to two layers of thetop coat on and allow to completelydry. And that’s it, you’re done! Trustme, if you follow all of these stepsyour manicures and pedicures will lastforever! Well, maybe not forever, butyou get the picture.Visit Cosmetics Galore Product Reviews:Size Genetics Reviews for morebeauty product reviews at www.cosmeticsgalore.comDanna Schneider is alsothe founder of MyBeautySpace.com:Beauty Blog38March Edition 2009
