He wasa forward on the basketball team,played outfield on the baseball team and ran thequarter mile for track. But, it was his skill in footballas an offensive and defensive end that led to his beingchosen MVP in 1968. It also allowed him to advanceto the college level where he started as a wide receiveron Kansas State University’s nationally ranked footballteam. After KSU, he was drafted by the World FootballLeague and recruited as a free agent for the DallasCowboys; however, his football career ended abruptlybecause of knee surgeries.When asked what made him such a formidable opponenton the field, McCarthy says he took to heart theCL motto that Coaches Sam Ruvolo and Joe Perellaadvocated, “You must have burning desire to win.”After college, McCarthy spent some time in Phoenix,Arizona honing his skills as a car salesman and businessleader. He moved to Kansas City in 1981 to furtheradvance his entrepreneurial spirit, became generalmanager of a Chevrolet dealership and began acquiringequity interests in that and other dealershi<strong>ps</strong> in theKansas City area. During this time, John and his wifeNancy had three children: Wesley, Ryan, and Lauren.These days, they all still live in the Kansas City vicinitywhere McCarthy owns and operates seven, automobiledealershi<strong>ps</strong> in Greater Kansas City, Kansas andMissouri and is proud to be recognized as one of thetop 100 dealer mega grou<strong>ps</strong> in the country. Yet, he iseven more proud to have celebrated his 35th anniversarywith Nancy in August.CARRIE (FAY) STEWARTNotre Dame Academy Classof 1985Basketball, Softball andVolleyballWhile it is a gift to do very well inone sport, it is extraordinary thatCarrie (Fay) Stewart excelled as a four-year, three-sportathlete in basketball, softball and volleyball.As a 5’7’’point guard, she was a top scorer in basketball.She also captained the basketball and softball teamsand was honored as a Greater Cleveland CatholicGirls Athletic Conference All-Star in both.Stewart credits her coaches Rhonda Rickleman,basketball coach; Maureen Wahl, softball coach; andKaren DiLillo, volleyball coach, for honing her skillsand promoting good sportsmanship.“They were great. I remember they were always makingsure that we had the correct attitude to go along withteam sports,” she says.Although generally modest about her accomplishments,Stewart is vibrant as she recalls one of her highestscoring games in which she put more than 30 pointson the score board.“I was really proud. My mom died when I was a freshman.I was thinking of her at that point because shereally liked basketball,” Stewart remembers. [Stewart’smother, Carol Gulan Fay, was a graduate of NDA in1947 where she also played basketball.]Stewart went on to play intramural basketball, flagfootball and softball in college at Bowling Green StateUniversity where she earned a degree in education.Today, she is a third-grade teacher at Park ElementarySchool in Chardon, where she also resides with herhusband Derrick and children Alec and Erin.Now, sports are a family affair. Stewart plays golf andskis for fun, yet she enjoys her role as coach for Erin’sbasketball team, and cheers on her husband as hecoaches Alec’s football and baseball teams.The McCarthys have devoted much of their time andresources to community involvement and are heavilycommitted to children’s organizations and causes thathelp the less fortunate.
