St. Joseph Medical Center addresses the complexity of health care with a simple but

Centralizing the resources and expertise of each department, medical professionals 

work as teams to treat individual patients with coordinated care. Through the lens of 

the most sophisticated and effective technology, physicians and scientists conduct 

research and develop solutions. Surgical, medical and nursing staff members expertly 

use their knowledge and talents to treat disease and help patients to heal.

Like many of you, I have been a proud supporter of 

St. Joseph Medical Center for many years. As current chair 

of the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation and previous 

chair of the operating board, I have had the unique 

opportunity to see fi rsthand the broad range of impressive 

initiatives and programs at our hospital. 

I am delighted that the annual report focuses on what 

I call the “special gems” of St. Joseph. Our research 

facilities—one internationally known and one just emerging as a national 

center—are extraordinary, focusing a spotlight on the signifi cant contributions 

of St. Joseph Medical Center that are benefi tting patients worldwide. 

It is the philanthropic support of our community that drives the focus on 

excellence. In December, we saw a tangible example of this when the new Heart 

Institute, new main entrance and Keeler Spiritual Center were dedicated. They 

are the culmination of our capital campaign, Investing in Excellence, that provided 

partial funding for these exciting spaces. 

I would also like to highlight the success of the Foundation for fi scal year 

2009. In an economically challenging environment, our friends demonstrated 

faith in and support for the future of St. Joseph. The Foundation saw a 

4 percent increase in fundraising, netting $3.8 million in contributions. 

I would like to conclude with an excerpt from one of our patients. He directed it to 

his physician but I would like it to be directed to you as well. “My sincere appreciation 

as I applaud your professional expertise. You have enhanced my quality of life and I will forever be 

grateful to you. You are a blessing … ”

This year’s report of the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation 

highlights the medical center’s unyielding focus on excellence. 

We demonstrate success with impressive measurements— 

both in comparisons to other hospitals and in reaching the 

ambitious goals we have set for ourselves. 

Excellence can be realized in many ways. There are successful 

investments in new facilities and putting state-of-the-art 

technology to work for patients. There are national 

distinctions and honors. There is groundbreaking research. And there is also 

attention to improving the quality of care on an everyday basis. You might call it 

making excellence routine. 

This year’s Foundation report shows how St. Joseph Medical Center achieves 

excellence in all of these areas. What emerges is a picture of a vital, contemporary 

community hospital with a growing regional and national reputation. Thank you

FOCUS ON DISCOVERY 

Scientific medical research may not typically be 

associated with community hospitals, especially 

in the Baltimore area. Yet two exceptional programs 

are housed at St. Joseph Medical Center where 

researchers have access to valuable data, patients 

and clinicians who work directly with patients. The 

affiliations are helping to expand the medical center’s 

reputation both nationally and internationally, while 

making valuable discoveries which benefit patients. 

Center for Translational Research 

The Cancer Institute at St. Joseph Medical Center is one 

of only two Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) hospitals 

participating in a National Institutes of Health (NIH) pilot 

study called the Cancer Genome Atlas project. What many 

do not realize is that part of the prominent national project 

is happening right at St. Joseph Medical Center—in the 

Center for Translational Research (CTR). 

The CTR is a revolutionary new biomedical research facility 

focusing on personalized medicine as a way to develop 

treatment models and cures for cancers and other diseases. 

Located at St. Joseph, CTR is a national laboratory of CHI, 

a 78-hospital network of Catholic hospitals in more than 

20 states. 

The CTR has three components: a biospecimen repository, a 

CLIA laboratory and a molecular research laboratory. 

The repository staff collects samples and data from CHI 

hospitals to utilize in research. The extensive CHI network of 

hospitals and patients provides a broad array of specimens 

that are truly representative of today’s health picture across 

the country. The data is extremely important in order to 

develop personalized approaches. Currently, the repository 

focuses on samples for the Cancer Genome Atlas project 

but it will soon expand to other areas, including cardiology 

and orthopaedics. 

Jeff Otto, Ph.D., national clinical director, and Brian Cornblatt, Ph.D., scientifi c director for the Center for Translational Research 

The research laboratory will gain its CLIA license this 

fall, enabling staff to perform high-complexity molecular 

diagnostics. CLIA refers to the U.S. federal regulatory 

Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. As a CLIA 

Lab, the CTR will provide testing services for hospitals and 

medical centers within a four-hour radius of St. Joseph 

Medical Center. 

The molecular research laboratory uses genomics-based 

molecular tools in a research setting, and operates in 

conjunction with CHI’s Center for Clinical Trials. This detailed 

approach allows researchers to look for biomarkers and 

variations within genes to help develop more personalized 

medical diagnoses and treatments. The days of treating 

all patients with a similar diagnosis in generally the same 

manner will soon be coming to an end. 

This work will help accelerate clinical trials in CHI 

institutions, leading to more personalized treatment to cure 

disease and save lives.

FOCUS ON DISCOVERY 

Orthopaedic Spinal Research Laboratory 

In January 2007, the renowned Orthopaedic Spinal 

Research Laboratory moved into a specially designed, 

state-of-the-art facility in the Jordan Center of St. Joseph 

Medical Center. Professionals at the lab investigate 

cutting-edge techniques for spinal surgery and 

evaluate prosthetic implants designed for spinal 

fusion, disk replacement or other procedures for surgical 

reconstruction of the spine. The program is led by Professor 

Bryan W. Cunningham, director, and Dr. Paul C. McAfee, 

chief of spinal reconstructive surgery at St. Joseph and 

medical director of the research laboratory. 

Three types of research are conducted: biomechanical 

(dealing with the movements of the spine), microscopic 

examination of tissue, and x-ray investigations. Fewer than 

10 centers in the country do all three types of research, 

and most are more narrowly focused than the laboratory at 

St. Joseph. 

Clinical training is a key part of the program and is 

conducted to evaluate innovative surgical approaches. The 

Jordan conference center, which can seat 30 to 40 people, 

Bryan Cunningham, M.S., and Paul McAfee, M.D. 

has live audio and video transmission from one of the 

hospital’s operating rooms. Physicians can see actual spinal 

surgery being performed and can interact with the surgeon. 

Spinal surgeons and research fellows from across the 

world come to the center for hands-on training and to work 

as non-clinical research fellows. 

Today’s orthopaedic patients are interested in minimally 

invasive surgery and preservation of motion. Recent 

research has focused on total disk replacement versus 

traditional spinal fusion to preserve mobility. The 

researchers also have investigated bone graft substitutes 

with the potential to form new bone. Degenerative spine 

conditions, deformity, spinal trauma and the motion 

preservation capabilities of spinal implants are some 

of the other groundbreaking topics addressed daily at 

the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at St. Joseph 


Global Reach Dr. McAfee recently expanded 

his historic use of technology when he, along with Dr. Ira 

Fedder, performed the fi rst telesurgery of a CHARITÉ 

lumbar disk replacement in the United States. Via satellite, 

the doctors assisted a team set up in a mobile surgical 

van in New Zealand. The Orthopaedic Spinal Research 

Laboratory had served as the central lab for the 

multi-center U.S. FDA study which ultimately led to 

approval of the CHARITÉ artifi cial disk replacement 

in 2005. The surgery was available online for viewing 

as part of a recent emerging technologies meeting 

in Washington.

EMTs and EKGs 

What is known as “door-to-balloon initiatives” is a hot topic 

across the nation, referring to efforts to shorten the time 

a heart patient receives treatment in order to return blood 

fl ow to the heart (usually through a “balloon” or stent) after 

a cardiac event. 

Late last summer, St. Joseph Medical Center made a major 

breakthrough in this area. The hospital provided equipment 

for 15 ambulances to transmit electrocardiogram (EKG) 

information about a patient directly to the emergency 

department, catheterization lab, or even to a physician at 

home if necessary. St. Joseph can activate the call team 

before the patient even reaches the hospital. The advance 

reports are particularly helpful on nights and weekends 

when on-call staff come in to assist. 

Emergency Medical Services of Baltimore County has been 

an enthusiastic partner in the new approach. The technology 

enables EMTs to maximize their time with patients in the 

ambulance and arm the St. Joseph team with invaluable 

data to treat cardiac emergencies and save lives. In some 

cases, patients can bypass the emergency room and be 

taken directly to facilities for cardiac catheterization. 

Following the lead of the St. Joseph pilot program, other 

hospitals have made plans to provide similar equipment. 

As more ambulances are equipped with this timesaving 

technology, cardiac patients will benefi t from the 

increased communication. 

As national benchmarks for door-to-balloon time hover 

around 90 minutes, St. Joseph Medical Center is proud to 

maintain a 50 to 60 minute average, exceeding expectations 

even as a regional leader in cardiac care.

Advances in technology are revolutionizing surgery at 

St. Joseph Medical Center. Less invasive procedures, 

increased precision and more options for patients 

are the inspiring result. The winning combination 

of expert surgeons and state-of-the-art equipment 

results in quicker recovery for patients and all-around 

better outcomes after treatment. 

St. Joseph’s surgeons have been utilizing the 

da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System longer than any 

other community hospital in the state, completing 

more than 500 surgeries. More of the highly complex 

Whipple procedures (pancreatoduodenectomy) are 

performed at St. Joseph to treat pancreatic cancer 

than at any other hospital in the Baltimore area. 

The latest additions to the high-tech arsenal are 

stereotactic radiosurgery and SpyGlassTM technology. 

Stereotactic Radiosurgery 

Patients with previously inoperable brain tumors have new 

hope because of technology described as “surgery without 

a scalpel.” This cutting-edge alternative to traditional 

surgery uses high-dose, precisely focused radiation beams 

to remove dangerous tumors. 

Initially, radiosurgery has been used at St. Joseph to 

treat non-cancerous brain tumors (such as meningiomas), 

cerebral arteriovenous malformations and pituitary 

adenomas. The precision of the radiation beam reduces 

the risk of damaging healthy tissue, the optic nerve or the 

spinal cord. 

Surgeons have now used this technology for lung cancer 

patients and will soon use it to treat tumors of the bone or 

liver. To customize radiosurgery’s use treating lung cancer, 

a device that synchronizes the patient’s breathing with the 

radiation being delivered is incorporated into the technique. 

While other hospitals in the area are beginning to use similar 

technology, St. Joseph is pleased to have experienced 

medical professionals behind the technology. Dr. Neal Naff, 

chief of neurosurgery, has performed radiosurgery for 

inoperable brain and spine tumors and lesions since 

2003 and is the most experienced Baltimore-area surgeon 

in this fi eld. 

In the St. Joseph multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, 

this technology provides yet another tool, further enabling 

each clinical team to choose the most effective method for 

treating particular patients.

SpyGlass Endoscope Technologies have greatly enhanced 

doctors’ ability to treat liver, pancreatic and other digestive 

problems at St. Joseph Medical Center. Through a process 

called SpyGlass Direct Visualization, this new endoscope 

provides a superb view of the biliary and pancreatic 

ducts. SpyGlass enables troubleshooting for conditions 

ranging from gallstones to cancer and leads to more exact 

and effective treatment. 

Using visualization provided by this high-tech tool, some 

patients suffering from large gallstones can be treated with 

lithotripsy (shock waves) and avoid surgery altogether. 

Operating Room Tracking Systems 

St. Joseph has undertaken an approach to effi ciency 

in patient care adapted from business and automobile 

manufacturing. The “LEAN TEAM” is leading the way to 

redesign the patient experience by looking at best practices 

and eliminating duplication or unnecessary steps. 

The LEAN TEAM’s eff orts focusing on the operating 

room have been bolstered by work with real-time location 

systems (RTLS). The Surgical Department worked with 

consultants to customize a model to track a patient’s 

progress through the surgical process and to make that 

information available to clinicians as well as to the 

patient’s family. 

Each surgical patient wears a badge that transmits to 

sensors throughout the surgical unit, enabling the system 

software to track that patient at any time through surgery. 

The Surgical Prep unit has designed the patient intake and 

assignment process to make the most eff ective use of this 

technology and to reduce wait times. Operating room staff 

members can easily monitor when the patient arrives and is 

ready for surgery. PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) staff 

can determine when patients are likely to complete surgery 

and can be prepared, even requesting a bed assignment in 

the medical center when the patient is nearing transfer. 

In the waiting room, loved ones can check the patient’s 

location at any time through the surgery process by reading 

the information next to a privacy-protected code assigned 

to the patient. As soon as the patient is admitted to a 

hospital room, the location is posted on the screen. 

In addition to the value of tracking patients in real time, 

the data collected provides information that can be 

analyzed to help improve patient fl ow and communication 

procedures for the future. Serving as the Alpha test site 

for ProcedureTracking has enabled clinicians to adjust 

procedures to improve effi ciency. Fewer surgery delays, 

decreased wait times for both patients and surgeons, and 

improved patient and family satisfaction are tremendous 

benefi ts realized already and showing even more promise 

for the future.

ISEASE CONTROL 

EVERYDAY EXCELLENCE 

At St. Joseph Medical Center, the term 24/7 is a 

constant reality. Day after day, physicians and other 

medical personnel treat patients with expertise and 

personalized attention. The hospital has identified 

areas in which national trends have indicated need 

or opportunity, and aggressively developed ways to 

address and exceed expectations in these areas. 

Diabetes Management 

Fact: Diabetes is a nationwide epidemic growing at 

an unprecedented rate, according to the Centers for 

Disease Control (CDC). About 25 percent of patients 

in hospitals have diabetes, though they are more likely to 

be in the hospital due to other medical problems. 

Focus at St. Joseph: The medical center has 

partnered with Healthways, an innovative diseasemanagement 

fi rm, to develop and implement systematic 

solutions for patients with diabetes. 

Intensifi cation of blood sugar management in patients 

with diabetes has reduced the length of hospital stays at 

St. Joseph and lowered the mortality rate of these patients 

who are dealing with a potentially life-threatening disease. 

Eva Gonzales, director of the Diabetes Management Center, 

spearheads the Healthways program at St. Joseph, which 

provides support in the diabetes service line through 

both inpatient and outpatient routes. All departments 

are touched by the efforts, from dietary to pastoral care; 

maternity to surgery. Effective diabetes management 

makes fi scal sense, too. The offi ce maintains increasing 

quality of care while generating cost savings as a priority. 

Healthways provides training for clinicians about diabetes 

management and distributes updated “Current Trends” 

information. The organization shares educational materials 

with patients and provides classes on diabetes selfmanagement 

on an outpatient basis. 

Empowering patients with education improves outcomes. 

Because managing diabetes is so dependent on individual 

patient follow-through, behavioral principles drive the

teaching in the program. The program presents manageable 

steps both for clinicians and for patients. 

Nurses at St. Joseph are an irreplaceable link in the 

diabetes initiative. Because they deal so directly with 

patient care, nurses have the most “teachable moments” 

with patients. The hospital’s overall success, though, has 

required cooperation across the board. The multidisciplinary 

commitment, more and more becoming a hallmark of 

the St. Joseph approach to excellence, is the key to the 

team’s success. 

Champions of diabetes management across the hospital 

have made success possible. Richard Boehler, M.D., 

chief medical offi cer, for example, was an early supporter 

who emphasized that lives could be saved by effectively 

controlling glucose. With the distinctive Healthways/ 

St. Joseph Medical Center partnership, the only one of its 

kind in the area, that aspiration is being realized.

NFECTION CONTROL 


Fact: The rise of staph infections (specifi cally MRSA, 

methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in the 

community has increased dramatically. 

Focus at St. Joseph: A rigorous infection control 

program has resulted in a strong culture of awareness 

and deliberate action throughout the medical center. 

Infection control at St. Joseph Medical Center has three 

components: hand hygiene, isolation of patients with 

potential and actual infections, and cleaning. The hospital 

has achieved and maintained greater than 90 percent hand 

hygiene compliance, compared to the national average of 

30 to 40 percent. 

Leigh Chapman, R.N., B.S.N., manages the effort, which has 

gained recent recognition in USA Today and The Journal of 

Clinical Outcomes Management. 

Consistent hand hygiene is the fi rst and most important 

step in infection control. Through an education process and 

carefully developed observation of professional practice, 

clinical and medical staff members have consistently 

exceeded all national benchmarks.

The “isolation” component means identifying patients 

who have infections or are carriers and taking appropriate 

precautions so that the infection does not spread to 

others. This includes requiring and providing appropriate 

personal protective equipment like gowns, gloves or 

respiratory masks for caregivers and visitors. New policies 

help to identify patients with infection and to effectively 

communicate this to the full array of caregivers likely to 

assist the patient. 

The environmental aspect is also an important component 

led by Crothall Services, which provides the hospital’s 

housekeeping. Environmental services personnel have 

become such important partners in infection control that 

two of the hospital’s housekeepers, along with medical 

staff members, attended a professional conference on the 

topic of MRSA prevention. 

Infection control efforts reach into the hospital’s 

international outreach programs. Chapman assists a rural 

hospital in Tanzania in improving infection control in an 

unusually challenging environment. Because of the limited 

resources in the region, one solution was to teach staff 

members how to make their own hand sanitizing solution. 

Back in Towson, St. Joseph is committed to sustaining the 

infection control effort and continuing to challenge staff to 

maintain the highest standards. Already, MRSA infections 

at the hospital have been reduced by 49 percent, even as the 

incidence of the infection rises in the general community.

RAPID RESPONSE 


Fact: A review of hospital mortality rates across the 

country reveal that a signifi cant number of deaths occur 

to patients outside of a critical care setting in which 

patients were not considered at risk of death. 

Focus at St. Joseph: The critical care physician, 

ICU charge nurse and a designated respiratory therapist 

form the Rapid Response Team, prepared to expertly 

treat patients in emergency situations anywhere in 

the hospital. 

When the Institute for Health Care Improvement initiated the 

100K Lives Campaign in 2005, hospitals across the country 

began to look for innovative ways to save lives. St. Joseph 

formed a project team to develop a Rapid Response Team 

(RRT) in the hospital. 

Should a patient in the hospital experience acute cardiac 

problems, acute respiratory distress or other serious changes 

that are of concern to the staff member caring for the patient, 

the RRT is called. The staff member clearly identifi es the 

patient’s condition and location so that the RRT staff is ready 

to help the patient immediately. RRT staff members are

specifi cally trained to respond to these kinds of calls. Arriving 

within fi ve minutes, the team brings critical care skills and 

equipment directly to the bedside. 

Nurses and other direct caregivers are encouraged to 

call upon the RRT well before patients are in more lifethreatening 

situations that would require what hospitals call 

“codes.” Patients are more likely to survive to discharge after 

an RRT occurrence than after a code. The effective use of 

the RRT has resulted in a measurable improvement in clinical 

outcomes at St. Joseph Medical Center.

URSING 


Fact: By the year 2020, the nation’s nursing shortage 

is expected to reach 29 percent, refl ecting a lack of 

800,000 nurses in the work force, according to a 

report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human 

Services and other agencies. 

Focus at St. Joseph: The Orthopaedic Institute 

leads the way in nursing professionalism and job 

satisfaction, demonstrated by the Orthopaedic Fund for 

Nursing Excellence. 

Nursing Professionalism 

Nurses on the sixth fl oor of the medical center care for 

patients who have had signifi cant bone surgery, joint 

replacements or other orthopaedic procedures. Nursing 

care is critical in helping patients recover and transition 

quickly to mobility. 

To support these valuable professionals, donors to the 

St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation helped establish 

the Fund for Nursing Excellence, which helps fund 

education and training toward certifi cation and nurse 

manager credentials. Research, confi rmed by experience at 

St. Joseph Medical Center, demonstrates that certifi cation 

increases knowledge, skill and confi dence that lead to 

better patient care and safety. 

The goal, consistent with hospitals designated by the 

American Nurses Association, is for 20 percent of nurses 

to receive certifi cation. Currently 16 percent of the 

orthopaedic nurses have received special certifi cation. 

The Fund also enables nurses to attend professional 

conferences and provides scholarship assistance for nurses 

pursuing advanced degrees. 

The Orthopaedic Institute’s efforts to support 

professionalism and job satisfaction have paid off. 

Orthopaedic nurses have an exceptional level of 

cohesiveness and pride in their work. In May, the 

sixth fl oor nursing staff was honored by ADVANCE 

for Nurses news magazine. This nursing team 

exemplifi es the highest ideals of care at St. Joseph

St. Joseph Medical Center has the good fortune to be blessed with 

the generosity of many friends. There are nearly as many reasons 

for giving as there are supporters of our vision. Many have a personal 

passion because of an illness they or a loved one have experienced. 

Others want to express their gratitude for outstanding care, while 

still others simply want to give the gifts of their time, talent and 

resources to a community that is close to their hearts. 

One very special group has come together at St. Joseph that 

exemplifi es philanthropy making a true difference. The Cancer 

Institute Board of Visitors formed in 2007 to raise awareness of 

and funding for projects related to priorities in patient care and 

comfort, research, equipment and technology. Most recently the 

Board collaborated with the Foundation to lead efforts to secure 

funding for the Varian Aria Medical Oncology Electronic Medical 

Record. Members of the Board are passionate advocates for the 

mission of The Cancer Institute which is evident as they prepare to 

support new projects to benefi t patients this coming year. 

According to Board chair Paul Sandler, “The Board of Visitors 

partnered with physicians and staff to devote our resources to a 

project that will make a real and lasting difference for patients 

and their caregivers. The Varian Electronic Medical Record will 

revolutionize cancer survivorship.” 

Varian Aria Medical Oncology 

Electronic Medical Record This 

state-of-the-art system will soon enhance 

the strong multidisciplinary approach of 

The Cancer Institute at St. Joseph Medical 

Center. The Varian system will electronically 

consolidate all of a patient’s health history—test 

results (including radiology and pathology), 

the customized treatment plan, surgeries, 

medications, follow-ups—anything related 

to eff ective care. The system will make 

multidisciplinary care more patient-friendly 

and physician-friendly. 

All providers in the medical center will 

have straightforward access to complete 

online documentation of signifi cant clinical 

information for all cancer patients. 

St. Joseph’s cancer program will be the fi rst 

in Baltimore to have such a fully integrated 

system. Ultimately, the system will revolutionize 

survivorship. Cancer survivors will be able 

to possess their own medical records on 

thumb-sized computer drives, invaluable 

should they need to resume care later in life, 

perhaps even in another state or country. 

The visionary leadership and sense of mission 

of the Institute’s Board of Visitors resulted in 

securing the funding for the Varian system. 

Across oncology services, the automated 

record system will improve timeliness of care 

and add to patient safety. For example, 

rule-based checks for chemotherapy and 

clinical protocol errors will reduce the risk of 

adverse events to patients from medication 

or chemotherapy. 

The system will help staff document expected 

improvements in patient and staff satisfaction, 

productivity, and quality and compliance of 

clinical documentation.

FOUNDATION YEAR IN HIGHLIGHTS 

In October, 250 guests attended a special evening event, 

raising $68,000 to support The Breast Center at 

St. Joseph Medical Center Cancer Institute. 

Award-winning actress Lynn Redgrave spoke poignantly 

about her own experience with breast cancer. 

On a beautiful September day, Towson Golf & 

Country Club hosted 120 golfers for our 

21st Annual Golf Tournament. The event netted 

$60,000 for the new Keeler Spiritual Center. 

Each November, select friends of the medical center are 

honored at our evening Candlelight Reception of Honor, 

held at The Baltimore Country Club. Pictured, Donna

In April, our Gala 2009: Life in Motion was held at The 

Hyatt Regency Baltimore. Nearly 800 people attended, 

netting $300,000 to support The Orthopaedic Institute. 

Funds raised support continuing education programs for 

orthopaedic nurses and facility improvements to 

enhance the patient experience at St. Joseph. 

On December 8, 2008, supporters, friends and 

staff members of St. Joseph Medical Center joined 

community leaders in celebrating the dedication of the 

new main entrance, Heart Institute and The Cardinal 

William H. Keeler Spiritual Center.

THE TAU SOCIETY 

Named for a letter in the Greek and Hebrew alphabets, 

and a symbol which St. Francis of Assisi cherished, the

VOLUNTEERS 

To our volunteers we owe a special debt of gratitude. St. Joseph 

Medical Center is most fortunate to have more than 300 men and 

women who give their valuable time each week to ensure St. Joseph 

fulfi lls our mission to deliver loving service and compassionate 

care.Volunteers keep the medical center running smoothly in 

countless ways, sometimes in highly visible roles, but many times 

working quietly behind the scenes. From the gentleman in the 

Catheterization Lab who assists patients and their families, to 

the men and women who help with vision and hearing screenings 

through our Community Outreach Department in schools, all of 

our volunteers fulfi ll a vital role at St. Joseph. 

Health care statistics cite that hospital volunteers perform duties 

that would average $19.51, if compensated. With 37,798 

volunteer hours recorded last year, that adds up to $737,439. 

Time is a precious commodity. We are grateful that so many have

FOCUS ON GRATITUDE 

Donors to our Investing in Excellence capital 

campaign transformed the medical center by 

supporting the construction of new clinical 

and public spaces. 

To off er health care that is patient focused and state-ofthe-art 

takes a strong fi nancial investment. In 2004, 

St. Joseph leadership identifi ed a $125,000,000 agenda 

of program, construction and equipment needs. The vision 

for our capital campaign, Investing in Excellence, was to 

continue to meet our patient promise to be “always expert, always 

personal, always faith-fi lled,” by engaging in philanthropic 

partnerships with individuals, family foundations, corporations 

and other charitable groups that are fundamental sources 

of transformation. 

The donors listed on the following pages shared in our 

vision and were instrumental to the success of meeting our 

goals to better serve our patients. We are both proud and 

humbled that nearly 1,800 donors contributed close to 

$20 million for St. Joseph Medical Center. 

There is not one area in the hospital untouched by the generosity 

of our friends. From our youngest patients in our new Neonatal 

Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric After Hours, to patients 

being treated in our new Cancer Institute and Heart Institute, 

so many in our community are benefi ting from these projects. 

Upgrades in surgical services, a breathtaking new main entrance 

and Keeler Spiritual Center, complemented by beautiful 

landscaping, rounded out the vision of the Campaign. 

Was the goal ambitious? Absolutely. Was it possible?

MISSION STATEMENT 

St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation 

St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, Inc., through the efforts of its 

Board members and staff members, seeks the philanthropic support 

of the community served by St. Joseph Medical Center. 

A subsidiary of St. Joseph Medical Center and a member of 

Catholic Health Initiatives, St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation 

was founded by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia and the 

St. Joseph Medical Center Board of Directors. 

Health care for all of God’s people, especially the poor, underserved 

and elderly, remains an important pledge of St. Joseph Medical 

Center and, thus, the Foundation. 

As responsible stewards, we recognize the need to safeguard 

the integrity of our mission while maintaining economic viability 

through creatively seeking increased philanthropic support. To assure 

continued services to the communities served by St. Joseph 

Medical Center, the Foundation will cultivate new and lasting 

relationships with prospective donors and provide stewardship to 

already generous benefactors.
