WELCOME
Celebrating
20 big years
Solar Energy International
celebrated 20 years of
renewable energy and solar
training Aug. 12-14, 2011,
in sunny Colorado. The
fun weekend welcomed SEI
friends, colleagues, alumni,
and board members who
traveled from as far away as
Australia, as well as several
of the 50 states, for rafting, a
community BBQ, and a tour
of the SEI PV Lab Facility in
Paonia. Fun was had by all
and the renewable energy buzz
remained strong throughout the
weekend’s events. The Town of
Carbondale even acknowledged
SEI with a Town Proclamation
on Aug. 9, 2011, for 20 years
of collaborative achievements
and community spirit.
Here’s to another 20 years!
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
We welcome you
4
Johnny Weiss
Greetings and
welcome to our
2012 catalog
of hands-on workshops
and online courses! It is a
challenging and exciting
time for Solar Energy
International and for
renewable energy (RE)
education.
Renewable energy education is fast becoming
mainstream and new training programs abound. Solar
Energy International continues to set the acknowledged
high standard for in-person classroom training, handson
labs, fieldwork, and RE online training. Our
nonprofit mission serves three important constituencies
– those seeking green careers, people interested in
learning to incorporate sustainable energy solutions
into their own lives, and current PV professionals
wanting to expand their skills.
Solar Energy International has further
strengthened our training capabilities by expanding
our Board of Directors, initiating a Solar Training
Certificate Program, authoring new PV textbooks, and
providing training through the DOE Solar Instructor
Training Network. We are proud to have served more
than 20,000 alumni involved with solar, wind, and
water-power projects. We believe renewable energy is
now more important than ever for the environment,
the economy, national security, and our legacy to
future generations.
Since 1991, Solar Energy International has
been dedicated to providing practitioners with the
knowledge and skills to help free the planet from a
deepening dependence on fossil fuels. Solar Energy
International continues to have the dedication and
instructional talent to train both industry professionals,
future industry pros, and those just personally
interested in RE technology. Our charitable Outreach
Programs also proudly reach thousands of kids, women,
Native Americans and international students. The
giving spirit of our Outreach Programs is at the core of
SEI’s efforts to create a more sustainable future.
The year 2012 will be one of continued celebration
and development. While celebrating our success and
role as leaders in RE education, we are again renewing
our commitment to provide world-class RE education.
There is much more work to do to make renewables
into our conventional energy source, instead of just
an alternative. We continue to encourage everyone to
shop carefully and do their research before committing
to any training service. Solar Energy International’s
thriving online training programs continue to enable
us to provide quality, cost-effective training to more
people around the country and the world. In this past
decade, our instructional and support staff has grown as
dynamically as the photovoltaic industry.
“We are again renewing
our commitment to provide
world-class RE education. ”
Our instructors continue to help us stand out as
the recognized benchmark in energy education services.
The future is very exciting for both SEI and renewable
energy education. Like never before, people worldwide
realize that energy efficiency, and solar, wind, and water
power are the way of the future. Decision-makers are
beginning to understand that the brief age of abundant
and cheap oil, gas, and coal is nearly over. It’s been a
wild ride, but now is the time to get sustainable.
In the coming decades, we plan to help every
interested person learn about and implement renewable
technology. We plan to also focus on the training-oftrainers
and curriculum development as renewable
energy education continues to grow exponentially.
Come join us! Together we will create a bright future.
Honored to serve
Tresi Houpt
N
ow, more than
ever in the history
of our nation,
is the time for all of us to
make a true commitment to
renewable energy. Climate
change is predictably
impacting us globally, the
“new energy” economy is
our students are opting to participate in Solar Energy
International’s Online Campus, which provides userfriendly
access to our world-class curriculum. SEI’s
online program offers access anywhere, anytime. For
others, there is nothing that can take the place of handson
instruction.
SEI also offers training programs designed
specifically for women; these workshops are run by
solarenergy.org
BOARD CHAIRPERSON’S NOTE
women instructors who have a wealth of experience in
the renewable energy field. The goal of this program is to
bring more women into this field.
Along with our traditional educational programs,
SEI has a very strong non-profit outreach component.
For example, SEI’s Solar in the Schools program reaches
out to K-12 students through classroom presentations,
teacher trainings, a lending library of energy-teaching
equipment and a free online renewable energy course.
Solar In the Schools has reached more than 12,000
students and teachers since 2002.
Our international program provides training to
groups around the world interested in using renewable
energy technologies. We offer workshops in Latin
America in conjunction with non-governmental
organizations that manage renewable energy projects
which serve as a model and inspiration for others.
Our Native American program works alongside
communities seeking assistance in implementing
renewable energy and natural building projects.
I hope you find the educational resource you were
looking for in this catalog. Enjoy perusing through this
catalog, you will find tremendous training opportunities.
It is a great time to enhance your expertise or learn a new
trade and take a lead in the new energy economy!
The SEI Board of Directors is invested in the many
goals established for 2012. As a leader in renewable
energy education, we will continue to take the lead in
offering state-of-the art instruction, on many levels,
providing access to our classes across the world. We will
also continue to enhance our outreach programs in the
following manner; expand our scholarship program,
adapt our RE100 for high school students, grow our
school-based solar suitcase project, and translate our
online course PVOL203: Solar Electric Design (Batterybased)
into Spanish. Our Outreach Programs are made
possible from outside grants and contributions. The SEI
Board of Directors and Staff believe it is important for
us to share, and through the generosity of others we are
able to keep these programs alive and expand to areas
most in need. Please consider making a contribution to
SEI, so that we can continue to expand opportunities for
renewable energy across our country and the world.
Solar In the Schools
New Energy Cycle
Educating the world through outreach
One of the favorite Solar In the Schools
learning activities is to put a student onto an
electricity-generating bicycle and let them feel
just how hard it is to power a light bulb, a
blow dryer or anything else that uses electricity.
It takes less than a minute of powering one
incandescent bulb before most people beg for
something more efficient. Those minutes on
the bike add up and the old energy cycle has
taken a beating from literally thousands of
students since it was built in 2004.
In 2011, thanks to funding from the Aspen
Skico Environment Foundation and help
from a number of other organizations and
individuals, the SIS program built a new and
much improved energy cycle. The bike itself
is a custom-welded assemblage of parts from
a cutting-edge mountain bike prototype, a
jogging stroller, a faucet and a soccer goalpost.
The somewhat unlikely result is an 8-speed,
internally-geared, belt-driven machine with a
29” back wheel and a 16” front wheel. The new
bike turns heads and allows people of all ages
and sizes to generate electricity with smiles on
their faces - for the first minute or so.
The electrical side of the energy cycle features
efficient generation and robust voltage
regulation to support a wide variety of fun 12volt
DC loads, as well as battery charging and
AC loads powered through an inverter. For
the first time we’ve added LED bulbs, which
use just one sixteenth of the energy of a
comparable incandescent bulb. We’ve even
raced against a solar module to pop balloons
using 12-volt air compressors. Energy
produced is now digitally trackable with realtime
display and graphing of
voltage, current, wattage and
accumulated energy. Look for
K-12 Professional Development program are accredited through
Colorado Mesa University for graduate-level credit hours.
Cancellations
If cancelling prior to 30 days before the workshop start
date, 50% of the total tuition is non-refundable. A
written cancellation is required. If cancelling within
30 days of the beginning of the workshop, the entire
tuition is non-refundable. SEI notifies participants
if a workshop they have registered for has been
cancelled. They may enroll in another workshop (based
on availability) or receive a full refund of tuition.
Notification of cancellation normally occurs one
month prior to the beginning of the workshop; in rare
cases, however, it may be less. SEI is not responsible for
losses incurred on housing, travel or other arrangements.
