SCU Delegation Visits Japan<br />

At the invitation of President Isao<br />

Taniguchi of Kumamoto Univer-<br />

sity, SCU Executive Vice-President<br />

Li Guangxian visited Japan in March,<br />

2012.<br />

During his stay at Kumamoto Uni-<br />

versity, Vice-President Li held talks with<br />

President Taniguchi. Both presidents<br />

reviewed the cooperation and exchanges<br />

between the two schools in recent years<br />

and agreed on a series of plans for fur-<br />

ther cooperation, e.g., the construction of<br />

SCU-Kumamoto Joint laboratory, faculty<br />

cooperation, high-level joint academic<br />

training, 2+2.5 joint degree programs,<br />

and student overseas study program in<br />

summer.<br />

SCU delegation was also invited<br />

to attend the retirement address and<br />

ceremony for Professor Kenji Kida of<br />

Kumamoto University. Professor Kida<br />

is a high-level foreign expert recruited<br />

by SCU through the “1,000 Foreign Ex-<br />

perts Recruitment Program”. Professor<br />

SCU delegation held talks with concerning departments<br />

at Waseda University<br />

Executive Vice-President Li Guangxian delivered<br />

a speech at the Retirement Ceremony for<br />

Professor Kenji Kida at Kumamoto University<br />

Kida is a well-known Japanese expert<br />

of environmental biotechnology and<br />

has won the 2010 Japan Biotechnol-<br />

ogy Award. Executive Vice-President<br />

Li delivered a speech at the ceremony<br />

and welcomed Prof. Kida to become a<br />

part of SCU. He hoped that Prof. Kida<br />

could realize his new dreams at SCU<br />

by using biomass technology to recycle<br />

resources and promote the sustainable<br />

development of the society.<br />

During the visit to Japan, the delega-<br />

tion also visited Waseda University and<br />

Hitachi Ltd.<br />

ian held talks with Vice-President Kat-<br />

suichi Uchida of Waseda University.<br />

Executive Vice-President Li expressed<br />

SCU’s hope to strengthen exchange and<br />

cooperation with Waseda University in<br />

areas including student exchange, high-<br />

level joint academic training programs,<br />

the establishment of a research plat-<br />

form, summer camp, and cultural week<br />

activities. Waseda University showed<br />

strong interests in SCU’s proposals<br />

and responded with great enthusiasm<br />

in the possibility of future coopera-<br />

tion. Through the talks, the two sides<br />

reached a tentative agreement on stu-<br />

dents’ short-term overseas study pro-<br />

gram and scholarship programs.<br />

At Hitachi Ltd., Executive Vice-<br />

President Li held talks with the officials<br />

from the departments concerned. In a<br />

friendly atmosphere, both sides reviewed<br />

the achievements of the SCU-Hitachi<br />

Environmental Applications Research<br />

Center since SCU President Xie Heping’s<br />

visit to Hitachi Ltd. Hitachi Ltd. intro-<br />

duced the company’s newly developed<br />

e-government technology and solutions<br />

and hoped to reinforce the future coop-<br />

eration.<br />

The delegation’s visit further pro-<br />

moted the cooperation and understand-<br />

ing between SCU and famous Japanese<br />

universities and companies and achieved<br />

great success.<br />
