Kratzer, Ed.S.The following three activities “Constellation Creations,” “Create a Myth” and “I’mGetting Dizzy!” examine <strong>the</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> legends, myths and fables and <strong>the</strong> impact on<strong>the</strong> <strong>Greek</strong> culture. These lessons will help students gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> apparentmovements <strong>of</strong> celestial bodies.Objectives1. To associate astronomical phenomena with <strong>Greek</strong> mythology.2. To compare and contrast <strong>Greek</strong> mythology with that <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cultures.3. To explain how life experiences were associated with <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stars.4. To construct knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> apparent motion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stars as a result <strong>of</strong> experiences.SuggestionsThe following activities were designed <strong>for</strong> use in a <strong>STARLAB</strong> but can be modified <strong>for</strong>use in <strong>the</strong> classroom. Special attention has been given to <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> process skills sothat your students will be active participants ra<strong>the</strong>r than passive observers. Activitiesin this guide were based upon myths <strong>of</strong> ancient <strong>Greek</strong> culture. We realize that manyvariations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se myths exist and recommend modifications or substitutions if necessary.Materials• <strong>STARLAB</strong> PortablePlanetarium• <strong>Greek</strong> <strong>Mythology</strong> <strong>Cylinder</strong>• Starfield <strong>Cylinder</strong>• Native American <strong>Mythology</strong><strong>Cylinder</strong> (optional)• a red light system or redcoveredflashlights*• copies <strong>of</strong> worksheet• arrow pointersNoteYou can make red-covered flashlights by using red construction or bulletinboard paper and taping it over <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flashlight.
