IVANA REŽEK,
Graphic designer
ivana.rezek@gmail.com
http://www.behance.net/ivanarezek
- Born in Zagreb, Croatia, May 4th 1982
- Graduated from the School of Applied Arts and Design in
Zagreb (department of Graphic design) in the year 2000
Although I am a graphic designer, in recent years I have started spending more and more
time painting. In my illustration work I usually interpret motifs from mythology, science-fiction,
fantasy, old legends and folklore. A lot of those motifs I use in my paintings as well, but while
illustrations are much more detailed and most most often black and white, the paintings are much
more expressive and abstract. My paintings are also very often inspired by strong emotions, positive
as well as negative ones, and I'm trying to 'capture' those feelings and mental states in a sort of a
'landscape' of internal world. Since I find different techniques suitable for expressing different
things, I am currently experimenting with using many different techniques, from drawing and
painting to collage, photography and mixed media.
Apart from painting and illustration/design work, I also organize group shows. I run a small
artists' space on the island of Cres in Croatia and I'm trying to form connections between foreign and
local artists (I regularly show small works by international artists), as well as present Croatian artists
to a wide international audience (over the internet as well as through organizing group shows). I
believe your course would greatly help me in making the online presentations and organizing group
shows more professionally.
Also, as I am currently working in many different styles and techniques I think I need to
narrow my focus and create a coherent presentation of my own work.
My work in organizing shows so far:
2011:
- travelling show titled „Archetypology“, which tackles the subject of archetypes (fundamental
ideas or types of characters and situations embedded in the collective subconscious of all human
beings). I gathered 9 artists (from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, USA and Canada) and
ask them to make their own interpretation of an archetype that they personally find most interesting
and important. The show was held at six places - ASA Art Gallery in Sarajevo, Europe House in
Zagreb, Atelier on the island of Cres, Prima Center in Berlin, Mobius in Boston, and Gallery Victor
Pauze in Joliette, Canada.
- “Summer Dream”, group show of local artists organized for KVN Public Library in Zagreb,
featuring positive, optimistic and uplifting works
2010:
- travelling show 'the 11 visions project', in which I asked 10 Croatian and Bosnian women artists
to create artwork which deals with their perception of different aspects of femininity and women's
issues. I felt that women artists deserved to get more attention as well as a platform to show their
opinion on the subject that they personally find important. The show was held at three places –

KUNS Gallery in Rijeka, Croatia, Prima Center in Berlin, and Galerie Art'Est in Paris (with a
finissage during Nuit Blanche)
- mail art show 'Memorable Movie Moments' in cooperation with Bosnian artist Nataša Stanišić, in
which we asked artists around the world to send us their favorite movie quote and illustrate it.
Collected works were shown at ASA Gallery in Sarajevo, during Sarajevo Film Festival
- organized/ coordinated 2 shows in Zagreb for Matthew Rose's project 'A Book About Death'
and 1 show in Sarajevo in cooperation with Nataša Stanišić. This show included works by over 500
artists from all over the world, on the subject of death and their attitude towards it.
