Its flexibility and versatility enable solarpanels to be integrated into almost any standing seamsystem.Kalzip ® SolarClad is a retro-fit solar solution whichcan be integrated into the building structure and whichis predestined for the utilization of this energy type,whether in installations on existing structures or whenplanning new buildings.The PV laminates consist of extremely robust amorphoussilicon (a-Si) thin-film cells attached to aluminum carrierpanels, which can be installed on any typical standingseam system without penetrating the roof. SolarCladcan be conventionally mounted on other system ele ments,such as trapezoidal sheets. The additional loadings areonly slight, due to the low weight per unit area of between3 and 7 kg/m 2 .The lightweight panels are suitable for all roof shapesand guarantee architects maximum freedom of design.

Kalzip ® Solar Power SystemsMaximum performance with Kalzip ® Solar PowerSystems: concise information on system planning.Location and orientationThe average annual solar irradiation in Europe rangesfrom 1,752 kWh/m 2 in southern Spain to 876 kWh/m 2in the North of Scotland. The average in Germany isaround 1,000 kWh/m 2 .Solar cellsWhen PV laminates absorb light they produce an electricalvoltage which results in the generation of a directcurrent. Solar cells are semiconductor materials whichimmediately convert light energy into electrical energy.This occurs by means of silicon layers which are designedto absorb the specific spectral colours of sunlight.Photovoltaic systemsEvery grid-connected PV system essentially consists ofthe solar laminates which generate direct current uponsolar irradiation. DC cabling is routed through a centralgenerator junction box, where fuses and lightning protectioncan also be integrated. The inverter then convertsthe direct current into a grid-compliant alternatingcurrent. The feed metre measures the amount of energyfed into the mains grid. 12


Kalzip ® Solar Power SystemsThe advantages ofamorphous thin-film technology:Triple-junction technologyThe solar cells used in amorphous silicon thin-film laminatesconsist of three silicon layers applied one after theother. The different layers are optimized so that eachlayer can optimally convert a different range of the lightspectrum to electrical energy. This enables greater efficiencyin diffuse light conditions, which constitute thepredominant form of daylight in central and northernEurope. The specific yields of a Kalzip ® AluPlusSolar orKalzip ® SolarClad system are thus, depending on localconditions, 10-20% higher than yields from a regularcrystalline system in identical conditions.Environmentally friendlyThe low energy demands during the manufacture andthe high yields result in an energy payback time ofapproximately 3 years. This is a fraction of the requiredenergy payback times for crystalline modules.Tight bypass circuitryWhen partially or temporarily shaded, amorphous thinfilmlaminates have at their disposal a bypass circuit sothat the system power is not significantly reduced oraffected. This is in contrast to a similarly shaded crystallinesystem which, in the event of partial shading,would deactivate much larger areas.Temperature performanceThe temperature coefficient describes the outputreductions exhibited by solar cells when exposed toheat. For regular monocrystalline or polycrystallinemodules, this coefficient is around -0.5%/K. Kalzip ® Solar Power SystemsPhotovoltaic systems are arewarding investment in the future.In addition to the different government subsidy schemesin the EU, which make PV systems an economicallyprofitable capital investment, environmental protectionshould also be mentioned. For example, in Germanyapprox. 40 percent of the harmful, climate-affecting carbondioxide emissions are caused by power generation.Every kilowatt hour of solar electricity generated andfed into the National Grid reduces CO 2emissions.The reduction in levels of carbon dioxide emissionsdepends on the nature of the energy source displaced.In Germany, a 10 kWp solar system generates approx.8000 kWh per year, which results in a saving of 5040 kgof CO 2each year.In addition to this environmental aspect, a furtherad vantage of Kalzip ® solar systems as standalone powergenerating solutions is that electricity can be producedand consumed in-situ. The energy payback time of a PVsystem is the time required by the system to generatethe same amount of energy as is required to manufacturethe product.Thanks to improved technologies and greater efficiency,this is considered to be three and five years for photovoltaicsystems. This shows that PV systems yield manytimes the amount of energy required to produce themover their service life (> 20 years), and are therefore highlysustainable construction products.
