Constructionis progressing at a cracking pace and we lookforward to watching the project take shape overthe coming months. The new pitch will helpdevelop sport at Oswestry School even furtherand build on the success of our flourishing SportsDepartment. In particular, girls’ hockey willundoubtedly move to a new level and we lookforward to watching this progress.Trinity term has, as always, rushed by with theextended examination season, trips, visits, musicalsoirees and (despite the typical “summer” weather)a full and varied sports programme. The EagleHas LandedWe are delighted to have adopted a giantmetal sculpture as part of the OswestryUrban Safari Trail. The magnificent eagle,which stands at almost nine feet tall on itsspecially designed plinth, has been installedon the School site close to St Oswald’sWell and Oswald’s Well Lane. Legend hasit that King Oswald, who was defeated inbattle on the site of the School’s playingfields, was quartered and hanged in a tree.A huge eagle swooped down, pluckedoff King Oswald’s arm and flew away;before he could disappear over the hills,All WeatherPitchDespite the inclement weather work has startedon the artificial hockey pitch and three five-asidefootball pitches, situated on the Maes-y-llan.The full size, synthetic grass pitch will be fencedand fully floodlit allowing sport to be playedin all weather conditions and, considering ourunpredictable seasons over the past few yearswill be a truly wonderful asset for the School!As well as providing an all-weather playingsurface for School pupils, the pitch will alsobe available for community use. The £500,000project is due to take sixteen weeks to completeand is being carried out by Leamington Spabased O’Brien Contractors. The pitch will becompleted in time for the start of the 2013Michaelmas term – we can’t wait!the eagle dropped his quarry and the armfell to the ground causing a natural springto form. This wonderful work of art couldnot have been realised without the supportand help provided by local Councillors KeithBarrow and Vince Hunt, Digga Rentals, T GGriffiths, sculptor Jeremy Schrecker and TheBritish Ironworks Centre. Oswestry Schoolare honoured to assist the Urban Safari Trailwhose aim is to promote a great sense ofpride in the community and give a healthy,much needed boost to local tourism.3
