Flat Facing Bricks are manufactured from highquality

always been made by hand. Today every Flat Facing 

Brick is unique, with a rich and individual play of colours. 

Production methods at the Meldorf site in Schleswig- 

Holstein combine modern machinery with the most 

important element: the manual skills of experienced 

craftsmen. High standards and manufacturing specifi - 

cations as well as strict production control procedures 

always guarantee a product of outstanding quality:

Whether the project is a detached house, a housing 

estate, an industrial unit or an architectural monument: 

Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks are true all-rounders. They 

always deliver a sophisticated fi nish – especially when

normal bricks, but are only 4–6 mm thick. Consequently 

they are extremely fl at, and still robust. 

Flat Facing Bricks are genuine lightweights that 

are bonded to the existing substrate. They are 

perfect as a cladding installed on top of external 

thermal insulation composite systems. We are 

pleased to manufacture the Flat Facing Bricks 

with individual textures and formats on request. 

Meldorfer ® Flat Facing Bricks Introduction 

used for new-build or for refurbishing façades in regions 

where brick-built houses are a standard and traditional 

part of the landscape. Flat Facing Bricks are used 

primarily for façade design, especially in conjunction 

with energy-saving external thermal insulation composite 

(ETIC) systems (see pages 4/5). But Meldorfer Flat 

Facing Bricks can also be used for interiors to accentuate 

a design feature, as a partial veneer and as a stylish 

alternative to wallpaper, plaster or other conventional 

wall coverings on larger areas. 

Durable, robust, economical 

External façade applications, in particular, have to meet 

more stringent requirements as regards durability and 

resistance. Façades have to withstand the knocks from 

wind and weather as well as changing temperatures, 

environmental infl uences or the wear and tear caused by 

passers by and residents. Due to their superior durability, 

Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks are the product of choice 

for this type of application: the material is robust, impact 

resistant and easy to clean. Long maintenance intervals 

reduce follow-up costs – a benefi t that makes great economic 

sense. Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks are also ideal 

for external and internal heavy-duty areas, such as wall 

bases, entrance halls and corridors.

However you envisage your new façade: the Meldorfer 

range also allows you to realise the more unusual 

design concepts. And all this can be implemented 

with a high level of energy-effi ciency: in combination 

with an energy-saving and cost-saving external thermal 

insulation composite system. 

Surface variants 

You have a choice of 13 colours, two formats and various 

shades of mortar! The wide Meldorfer range offers 

plenty of options with a traditional appearance. Furthermore, 

you can always have your Flat Facing Bricks 

customised for design options that are individual and 

out of the ordinary. 

Standard or special colours: the high quality of Meldorfer 

products always guarantees a natural appearance and 

an effective interplay of colours. Meldorfer Flat Facing 

Bricks transform an old façade to give it a beautiful 

and unique appearance. The same applies to period 

prop-erties, new build and partial cladding. The fairfaced 

appearance is matched perfectly, tone in tone, 

by Meldorfer Corner Facing Bricks, which present the 

matchless character of solid stone on corners and 

edges.

Energetic refurbishment 

Saving energy is more important than ever. More than 

75 % of the energy consumed by private households is 

used for heating. The important things here are to save 

money, to invest in the future and to meet the statutory 

requirements by complying with current energy-saving 

regulations. Installing façade insulation and Meldorfer 

Flat Facing Bricks can save up to 40 % in heating costs. 

The attractive brick appearance is achieved quite 

simply and without adding much weight to the façade: 

due to the composition of the material and its reduced 

thickness, Flat Facing Bricks weigh just 5–6 kg/m 2 . 

They can therefore be bonded directly to the reinforced 

insulation board as the fi nal layer, without any additional 

fi xings being required. Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks 

represent a highly attractive alternative to the conventional 

ETIC system build-up consisting of insulation 

and rendering. Particularly in regions where brick-built 

houses are a traditional feature of the landscape, these 

perfectly insulated façades with a fair-faced appearance 

really are the fi rst choice.

High pressure in the North – with guaranteed wellbeing: This recently built home 

in Kaaks, Schleswig-Holstein, blends in perfectly with the landscape where traditional 

brick houses have been a feature for centuries. The inviting single-family 

house is well protected by the robustness of Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks, even in 

inclement weather. Applied as the rugged fi nal layer of an external thermal insulation 

composite system, the combination of ETIC system and Flat Facing Bricks 

markedly reduces energy consumption and heating costs. The colours of the 

dry stone wall are refl ected in the individually matched shades of the brickwork – 

a harmonising detail for a stylish and traditional Nordic combination.

Exemplary in terms of energy consumption and clean lines – the apartment block 

in Bad Oldesloe sets a clear trend. An external thermal insulation composite 

system permanently reduces energy consumption as well as pollution emission 

– thereby benefi ting both the occupiers and the environment. The façade with its 

Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks possesses the traditional appeal of an attractive red 

clay fi nish. The white cladding for the balconies and the top storey, also in white, 

provide an effective contrast. Additional design features are the Flat Facing Bricks 

in an attractive shade of grey. They lift the entire façade, while simultaneously 

giving it texture and order.

The WMF factory in the Swabian town of Geislingen an der Steige is the successful 

symbiosis of old and new. Surrounded by brick-built manufacturing units originally 

erected in the late 19th century, the “Fish Hall” with its distinctive shed roof 

now houses the WMF shop. To reinforce the connection between production and 

sales, the client chose a matching fi nish using Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks rather 

than rendering for the façade of the “Fish Hall”. The classical brick look achieves 

great depth with rich shades – as well as delivering an additional energy-related 

benefi t: an external thermal insulation composite system was able to provide 

cutting-edge energy effi ciency for a building that had previously suffered from 

inadequate insulation. The attractive, historical fabric of the building is given 

optimum protection and makes shopping a pleasurable experience for its many 

visitors.

The Dulsberg-Nord estate in the Barmbeck district of Hamburg covers an area of 

100 hectares (approx. 247 acres) and is a wonderful example of buildings erected 

as a consequence of the social housing reform of the 1920s. 549 homes, fl oor 

space of around 25,000 m 2 and a façade area of 26,000 m 2 : impressive fi gures 

for a refurbishment project in a conservation area – with Meldorfer Flat Facing 

Bricks. In combination with an effi cient external thermal insulation composite 

system, Meldorfer Flat Facing Bricks deliver not only contemporary energy effi ciency 

and a decorative appearance, but also mature technical solutions for details, 

such as projecting stretchers courses, keyed corners or steeply sloping window 

sills. Preserving the appearance of the period façade enhances the quality of this 

residential estate in the long term, both in terms of town planning and architectural 

design.

masonry (right). 

Architectural history: The residential area was 

destroyed during an air raid in 1943. Most of it
