‣ ‘Focus on fitness not fatness’Dr Gavin Sandercock, a children’s fitness expert fromthe University of Essex, argues there has been a wellmeaningbut misguided focus on obesity, while the harm caused by inactivity has beenoverlooked. He cites the LGA’s call for some of the tax raised on "unhealthy" foods to beused by local authorities to help overweight and obese children.‣ A class war loomsA feature on the pressures facing Gascoigne Primary School – the biggest primary in Britainwith 1,200 pupils – which has to hold three assemblies a day, six playground shifts andstaggered lunchtimes. The LGA has warned more than 900,000 extra primary school placeswill be needed in the next decade. It wants the government to fully fund the cost of allschool places and to give councils the power to open new schools. Cllr David Simmonds,Chairman of the LGA’s Children and Young People Board, said: “We fear a tipping pointcould soon emerge when councils and schools can no longer afford the massive costs for thecreation of places, nor find the space necessary for new classes.”Half term events with the Countryside teamDemocratic Services producesthis weekly information sheetevery Friday for Members ofEast Devon District Council. Please contact Diana Vernonif you have any commentsabout the newsletter.Monday 16 FebruaryBird box making at CranbrookYounghayes Centre 10am – 2pmCelebrate National Nest Box Week bymaking your own bird box to put up inyour garden.
