HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR2010-2011August 20102• The AGO partners with the Ontario College of Artand Design University (OCADU) to offer a summerdesign day camp for children six to 13 years of age,where campers explore why “design matters,” underthe guidance of OCADU design instructors.• The Grange – a national historic house built in 1820and the Gallery’s first home – receives criticalrepairs, thanks to a generous grant from ParksCanada. Located at the south side of the AGO, TheGrange now houses the Gallery’s Members’ Lounge.• The Honourable James M. Flaherty, Minister ofFinance, ceremonially removes the last piece ofold drywall from the area that will become the newhome for the AGO Youth Council in the new WestonFamily Learning Centre. Designed by Hariri PontariniArchitects, the centre will comprise 35,000 squarefeet for art education programs and activities.Funding for this visionary project was made possibleby two key partners: the Government of Canada’sInfrastructure Stimulus Fund and a landmarkdonation from the W. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR2010-2011• The AGO marks Scotiabank Nuit Blanche,Toronto’s annual sunset-to-sunrise celebrationof contemporary art, with an all-night screeningof Julian Schnabel’s film Lou Reed’s Berlin.• The AGO hosts a talk by director emeritus of TheMetropolitan Museum of Art, Philippe de Montebello,recognized throughout the world as one of themuseum field’s most influential and articulatechampions of integrity, authority, education andpublic access.• AGO visitors experience a different side of artistHenry Moore with the exhibition The Shape ofAnxiety: Henry Moore in the 1930s. Organized byTate Britain in collaboration with the AGO, the showreveals a darker and more surreal nature to Moore’searlier works.November 2010• Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts,a Canadian exclusive, opens at the AGO featuringmore than 200 treasures spanning three centuries.Thanks to the generous support of the Patrons ofthe Exhibition — Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., TheGlobe and Mail, Rogers Communications Inc. andScotiabank Group — the AGO’s Maharaja exhibitionis free to visitors 25 years of age and under.• The AGO unites with other venues to support WorldDiabetes Day, as Baillie Court is lit in blue. Theday is spearheaded by the International DiabetesFederation and supported by the World HealthOrganization.December 2010• The AGO opens the exhibition Animal Tales: Beasts,Toys, and Fables from the AGO Collection. Designedwith young family audiences in mind, the works areinstalled at child height, with a drawing station anda collection of stuffed animals to inspire youngartists to create their own animal drawings.• The AGO introduces multi-sensory tours tovisitors with vision loss, designed to increase theiropportunities to engage with art. Multi-sensorytours become part of the AGO’s regular program,offered twice a month.January 2011• To celebrate 2011 as Canada’s Year of India, theAGO hosts a five-day Maharaja Festival with danceand music performances, cooking demonstrations,Rangoli floor art demonstrations, henna tattooingand special tours of the Maharaja exhibition.• More than 450 guests — many in brilliant SouthAsian dress — arrive for the glittering MaharajaGala. Co-chaired by Laura Rapp and filmmakerDeepa Mehta, the event raises $550,000.• Toronto-based artist Kristan Horton wins TheGrange Prize 2010 for contemporary photography.A partnership between the AGO and Aeroplan, theannual $50,000 prize is Canada’s largestphotography prize and is decided by public voting.• Proceeds raised at the Opening Night Preview eventfor Art Toronto enable the AGO to purchase 10 worksby four contemporary Canadian artists: Mike Bayne,Adad Hannah, An Te Liu and Ron Terada.35

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR2010-2011• In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the JUNOAwards, The Canadian Academy of Recording Artsand Sciences (CARAS) partners with the Galleryin an innovative project that pairs JUNO Awardwinningand nominated artists with renownedCanadian art selections and works from the HenryMoore Sculpture Centre.February 2011• The AGO presents the works of two iconic Canadianartists in groundbreaking exhibitions: PatersonEwen: Inspiration and Influence showcases theartist’s works alongside the colleagues and friendswho influenced and encouraged him and BlackIce: David Blackwood – Prints of Newfoundland,a career-spanning retrospective of the artist,showcases the work of one of Canada’s leadingprintmakers. The AGO is proud to hold the largestpublic collections of works by Paterson Ewen andDavid Blackwood.• The AGO Youth Council hosts an evening ofperformances and dance by, for and about artistswith disabilities and the growing Disability ArtsMovement, with new work by Leah LakshmiPiepzna-Samarasinha and other local artistsMarch 2011• The AGO unveils a major exhibition that displays, forthe first time, highlights from one of the world’smost comprehensive collections of Inuit art. InuitModern: The Samuel and Esther Sarick Collectiontraces the transformation of Inuit art in the 20thcentury and features more than 175 works by 75artists, including sculpture, prints and drawings.The AGO’s first online symposium is broadcast fromthe Inuit Modern exhibition. While curators are inconversation with Inuit artists, people from aroundthe planet are able to watch in real time, sendingtheir questions and comments to the moderator.• The AGO hosts a night of performances, discussionand music related to contemporary South Asianartistic practice in Toronto. Featured performancesand artwork by LAL, Gitanjali Lena, Srimoyee Mitra,Zanette Singh and Kaspar Saxena respond to theexhibition Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s RoyalCourts.• After a triumphant 19-week run Maharaja: TheSplendour of India’s Royal Courts closes on April3, drawing 162,719 visitors, with close to 40 percent visiting the Gallery for the first time.4• University of Toronto master’s degree student,Vanessa Fleet, completing an internship at theAGO, discovers that a series of 1,702 photographsattributed to French photographer ÉmileFréchon and acquired by the AGO in 2005 wereactually taken by the previously unknown Frenchphotographer and painter Abel Boulineau.1. ACQUISITION HIGHLIGHTS2010-2011In 2010-2011, the AGO added 634 strategic acquisitions,strengthening every area of our collection, includingprints and drawings, African sculpture, photographyand contemporary works. The AGO collection now totalsmore than 80,000 works.Of particular note was a generous gift of works byHenri Toulouse-Lautrec from theDonald R. Muller/Ross R. Scott Collection.The AGO also received a significant gift of gelatin silverprints by the contemporary American artist Danny Lyonfrom Aaron Milrad and Brenda Coleman, in memoryof Bella and Joseph Milrad. From November 24, 2009, to May 2, 2010, the AGO hosted the exhibition King Tut: The Golden King and The Great Pharaohs. Results to March 31, 2010, areincluded in the Statement of Operations with revenues of $2,367,000 [2010 - $7,761,000] and expenses of $2,118,000 [2010 - $6,799,000] for a net surplus of$249,000 [2010 - $962,000].4. Pension adjustment reflects the excess of cash contributions over pension expense each year.5. In the 2010-2011 fiscal year, the AGO received gifts of works of art with an approximate value of $13,866,000. This is not reflected in the financial data above,but is identified in the AGO’s 2010-2011 audited financial statements.6. The AGO records capital asset purchases at cost and then amortizes its capital assets over the useful life of the asset. Donations and grants received for thepurchase of capital assets are deferred and then amortized based on the useful life of the asset.
