HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR2010-<strong>2011</strong>August 20102• The AGO partners with the <strong>Ontario</strong> College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>and Design University (OCADU) to <strong>of</strong>fer a summerdesign day camp for children six to 13 years <strong>of</strong> age,where campers explore why “design matters,” underthe guidance <strong>of</strong> OCADU design <strong>in</strong>structors.• The Grange – a national historic house built <strong>in</strong> 1820and the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s first home – receives criticalrepairs, thanks to a generous grant from ParksCanada. Located at the south side <strong>of</strong> the AGO, TheGrange now houses the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s Members’ Lounge.• The Honourable James M. Flaherty, M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong>F<strong>in</strong>ance, ceremonially removes the last piece <strong>of</strong>old drywall from the area that will become the newhome for the AGO Youth Council <strong>in</strong> the new WestonFamily Learn<strong>in</strong>g Centre. Designed by Hariri Pontar<strong>in</strong>iArchitects, the centre will comprise 35,000 squarefeet for art education programs and activities.Fund<strong>in</strong>g for this visionary project was made possibleby two key partners: the Government <strong>of</strong> Canada’sInfrastructure Stimulus Fund and a landmarkdonation from the W. Organized byTate Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> collaboration with the AGO, the showreveals a darker and more surreal nature to Moore’searlier works.November 2010• Maharaja: The Splendour <strong>of</strong> India’s Royal Courts,a Canadian exclusive, opens at the AGO featur<strong>in</strong>gmore than 200 treasures spann<strong>in</strong>g three centuries.Thanks to the generous support <strong>of</strong> the Patrons <strong>of</strong>the Exhibition — Fairfax F<strong>in</strong>ancial Hold<strong>in</strong>gs Ltd., TheGlobe and Mail, Rogers Communications Inc. andScotiabank Group — the AGO’s Maharaja exhibitionis free to visitors 25 years <strong>of</strong> age and under.• The AGO unites with other venues to support WorldDiabetes Day, as Baillie Court is lit <strong>in</strong> blue. Designedwith young family audiences <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, the works are<strong>in</strong>stalled at child height, with a draw<strong>in</strong>g station anda collection <strong>of</strong> stuffed animals to <strong>in</strong>spire youngartists to create their own animal draw<strong>in</strong>gs.• The AGO <strong>in</strong>troduces multi-sensory tours tovisitors with vision loss, designed to <strong>in</strong>crease theiropportunities to engage with art. Multi-sensorytours become part <strong>of</strong> the AGO’s regular program,<strong>of</strong>fered twice a month.January <strong>2011</strong>• To celebrate <strong>2011</strong> as Canada’s <strong>Year</strong> <strong>of</strong> India, theAGO hosts a five-day Maharaja Festival with danceand music performances, cook<strong>in</strong>g demonstrations,Rangoli floor art demonstrations, henna tattoo<strong>in</strong>gand special tours <strong>of</strong> the Maharaja exhibition.• More than 450 guests — many <strong>in</strong> brilliant SouthAsian dress — arrive for the glitter<strong>in</strong>g MaharajaGala. Co-chaired by Laura Rapp and filmmakerDeepa Mehta, the event raises $550,000.• Toronto-based artist Kristan Horton w<strong>in</strong>s TheGrange Prize 2010 for contemporary photography.A partnership between the AGO and Aeroplan, theannual $50,000 prize is Canada’s largestphotography prize and is decided by public vot<strong>in</strong>g.• Proceeds raised at the Open<strong>in</strong>g Night Preview eventfor <strong>Art</strong> Toronto enable the AGO to purchase 10 worksby four contemporary Canadian artists: Mike Bayne,Adad Hannah, An Te Liu and Ron Terada.35


HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR2010-<strong>2011</strong>• In celebration <strong>of</strong> the 40th anniversary <strong>of</strong> the JUNOAwards, The Canadian Academy <strong>of</strong> Record<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Art</strong>sand Sciences (CARAS) partners with the <strong>Gallery</strong><strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>novative project that pairs JUNO Awardw<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gand nom<strong>in</strong>ated artists with renownedCanadian art selections and works from the HenryMoore Sculpture Centre.February <strong>2011</strong>• The AGO presents the works <strong>of</strong> two iconic Canadianartists <strong>in</strong> groundbreak<strong>in</strong>g exhibitions: PatersonEwen: Inspiration and Influence showcases theartist’s works alongside the colleagues and friendswho <strong>in</strong>fluenced and encouraged him and BlackIce: David Blackwood – Pr<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> Newfoundland,a career-spann<strong>in</strong>g retrospective <strong>of</strong> the artist,showcases the work <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> Canada’s lead<strong>in</strong>gpr<strong>in</strong>tmakers. The AGO is proud to hold the largestpublic collections <strong>of</strong> works by Paterson Ewen andDavid Blackwood.• The AGO Youth Council hosts an even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>performances and dance by, for and about artistswith disabilities and the grow<strong>in</strong>g Disability <strong>Art</strong>sMovement, with new work by Leah LakshmiPiepzna-Samaras<strong>in</strong>ha and other local artistsMarch <strong>2011</strong>• The AGO unveils a major exhibition that displays, forthe first time, highlights from one <strong>of</strong> the world’smost comprehensive collections <strong>of</strong> Inuit art. InuitModern: The Samuel and Esther Sarick Collectiontraces the transformation <strong>of</strong> Inuit art <strong>in</strong> the 20thcentury and features more than 175 works by 75artists, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g sculpture, pr<strong>in</strong>ts and draw<strong>in</strong>gs.The AGO’s first onl<strong>in</strong>e symposium is broadcast fromthe Inuit Modern exhibition. While curators are <strong>in</strong>conversation with Inuit artists, people from aroundthe planet are able to watch <strong>in</strong> real time, send<strong>in</strong>gtheir questions and comments to the moderator.• The AGO hosts a night <strong>of</strong> performances, discussionand music related to contemporary South Asianartistic practice <strong>in</strong> Toronto. Featured performancesand artwork by LAL, Gitanjali Lena, Srimoyee Mitra,Zanette S<strong>in</strong>gh and Kaspar Saxena respond to theexhibition Maharaja: The Splendour <strong>of</strong> India’s RoyalCourts.• After a triumphant 19-week run Maharaja: TheSplendour <strong>of</strong> India’s Royal Courts closes on April3, draw<strong>in</strong>g 162,719 visitors, with close to 40 percent visit<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Gallery</strong> for the first time.4• University <strong>of</strong> Toronto master’s degree student,Vanessa Fleet, complet<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>ternship at theAGO, discovers that a series <strong>of</strong> 1,702 photographsattributed to French photographer ÉmileFréchon and acquired by the AGO <strong>in</strong> 2005 wereactually taken by the previously unknown Frenchphotographer and pa<strong>in</strong>ter Abel Boul<strong>in</strong>eau.1. ACQUISITION HIGHLIGHTS2010-<strong>2011</strong>In 2010-<strong>2011</strong>, the AGO added 634 strategic acquisitions,strengthen<strong>in</strong>g every area <strong>of</strong> our collection, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gpr<strong>in</strong>ts and draw<strong>in</strong>gs, African sculpture, photographyand contemporary works. The AGO collection now totalsmore than 80,000 works.Of particular note was a generous gift <strong>of</strong> works byHenri Toulouse-Lautrec from theDonald R. Muller/Ross R. Scott Collection.The AGO also received a significant gift <strong>of</strong> gelat<strong>in</strong> silverpr<strong>in</strong>ts by the contemporary American artist Danny Lyonfrom Aaron Milrad and Brenda Coleman, <strong>in</strong> memory<strong>of</strong> Bella and Joseph Milrad. Results to March 31, 2010, are<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the Statement <strong>of</strong> Operations with revenues <strong>of</strong> $2,367,000 [2010 - $7,761,000] and expenses <strong>of</strong> $2,118,000 [2010 - $6,799,000] for a net surplus <strong>of</strong>$249,000 [2010 - $962,000].4. Pension adjustment reflects the excess <strong>of</strong> cash contributions over pension expense each year.5. In the 2010-<strong>2011</strong> fiscal year, the AGO received gifts <strong>of</strong> works <strong>of</strong> art with an approximate value <strong>of</strong> $13,866,000.
