THE REALTOR ® ● June 2007 ● 6LIBOR NEWSFROM WHERE I SITBy Joseph E. Mottola, Chief Executive OfficerThe MLS Board of Directors approveda Task Force which will concern itselfwith examining the governing structure. This includes the makeup of theExecutive Committee and the Board ofDirectors. The Executive Committee currentlyconsists of sevenelected officers and the twoimmediate past presidents. The elected officers consist“Trends amonglarge MLSs”of the President, threeCounty Vice Presidents, andSecretary and Treasurer. Ifthe Task Force considersenlarging the Committeewho would they add? Wouldthey look for an automaticrepresentative from a large firm or perhapsfrom the Appraisal area or someother specialty. Would they look internallyand place a particular committee chairon the Committee? The make up of the Directors is interestingas well. Currently Directors arenominated from their zones based uponthe number of Participants. Should it bebased on the number of offices or membershipin the Zone as opposed to officesor Participants. Are there too many directors? We currently have the largest Boardof Directors (75) of any MLS in thecountry and there are now large MLSswith more Participants and far smallerboards of directors. (Therange tends to be 12-24).Some Boards of Directorsare set up to insure thatParticipants and/or firmswho are doing the most businessare automatically givenseats either as Directors orOfficers. The rationale for ExecutiveCommittee and Directormakeup varies all over the country andno two are the same. The MLS will bebring in a respected industry consultantKevin McQueen of Focus Forward toupdate them on the trends among largeMLSs and facilitate the discussion ofpossible changes. Any changes wouldultimately have to be reviewed by theexisting Executive Committee andapproved by the Board of Directors.HIRE. TRAIN. FIRE.
