35 Years of Ministry to the Lord
Perseverance……A fitting theme for our 2011-12 academic year. Throughout the history of our school,
the people that God called to serve in this place – teachers, parents, board members, pastors, community
leaders – showed a tremendous will and dedication to the Lord’s work that can only be categorized
as remarkable. Having been here for less than 3 years, I have been impressed with the perseverance that
was displayed by the leaders who would not allow our school to fail. It is by the grace of God that their
efforts were fruitful but it sure sounded like a challenge.
Who would have thought? From our humble beginnings at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, this remarkable
school, God’s school, has been making an impact for Christ in the hearts of young people. So many people,
so many gifts, congregational and community support and a niche in the region of Northeastern
Wisconsin….all for Christ!
In talking with alumni, former parents, teachers and community supporters, it’s evident that there is
a tremendous amount of passion for our high school. We have seen that show itself in various ways
through the heartfelt actions of support and through the multitudes of prayers.
NEWLHS was housed in four temporary locations around the city of Green Bay, (which included: Pilgrim
Lutheran Church, sharing the old Norwood School with St. James Lutheran, the current Aldo Leopold
School-which at the time was Green Bay Christian and sharing Premontre High School which is
now the current Notre Dame campus) until 1993, the current building was erected on our new campus
on Green Bay’s east side. Having seen it all, I asked Mr. Mike Stock, the one and only Athletic Director
our school has known, what his thoughts were. “Moving the school was a significant challenge for the
students, parents and faculty. Through it all, however, we made some great memories that will be with
us for a lifetime”. (continued on page 2)
As we celebrate our 35 th Anniversary, please join us for a day of celebration and fun as
we honor Mr. Stock. Please see the promotions for the Blazer Open later in the Beacon.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to come and say thanks to Mr. Stock for his tremendous
service to our school. But don’t tell him – it’s a surprise! Please send any favorite
stories and/or pictures to help us ‘roast’ Mr. Stock.
For the part that you have played in the story of N.E.W. Lutheran High, I thank you. So many memories
made, so many relationships formed and so many lives touched by our loving Father through the
power of His Son Jesus.
What will your part be in the next chapter of NEWLHS? There’s only one way to find out! Stay connected
through those relationships, visit us at games, concerts, dramas, fundraising events around the
city and pray for Jesus to be exalted above all as He leads us with truth, grace and mercy. Join us in our
efforts to Help Families Prepare Christian Leaders in this generation and in those to come.
God Bless you Blazers for all you have done and continue to do for our school!
N.E.W.Lutheran High School - Teaching Digital Citizenship through 1:1 iPad
Programming - Have you ever thought of NEWLHS as a leader in educational technology? With
the coming school year, we are moving towards our bold vision of being a technologically intuitive regional
leader in education through a new program that will provide every student at NEW Lutheran
High School their own iPad to use 24/7. We are greatly blessed with this opportunity and, as a faculty,
we will have the creative freedom to challenge and inspire our students and to guide them to use these
amazing devices in God-pleasing and responsible ways. Helping our students in this way has never been
more important or relevant. To support this initiative or to find out more about plans to include these
tools in the learning process, please contact the school at 920.469.6810.
Peining (Vivian) Wang…
Erich Johnson and Caleb Benz…
Congratulations to N.E.W. students Erich Johnson
and Caleb Benz, who each won scholarships at
Junior Achievement’s 17 th Annual Business Challenge
- a business strategy tournament that was held on
February 18, 2012 at NWTC. The Junior Achievement
Business Challenge competition places high school
students in the CEO’s seat and increases their understanding
of the “real world of business.”
Caleb and Erich's business mentors were David
McCarthy from Schreiber Foods and Katie Hess from
Seize the Day Events. They won Most Improved and
each was awarded $400 scholarships!
I came to the States along with my exchange program AYUSA in my junior year and I began my high school junior
year in N.E.W Lutheran High School late August of 2010. And one year after that, I ended up making up my mind
to come back to finish up my high school here, as well, along with two other AYUSA exchange students from Beijing.
In this case, three of the exchange students from my program ended up coming back to N.E.W for their high
school education and experiences in the States.
I should tell you the reason why I decided to come back to NEWLHS for a
second year after my exchange program was over. Despite of the reason that
instead of moving around and making changes, I should probably be more
settled down and focus on my college planning and applying as my goal is to
go to college in the United States, the thing that drives me the most to come
back is how much I enjoy the nice atmosphere and environment here. N.E.W
is a tiny school, but at the same time, it is a big family. Kids are friendly to one
another and teachers are so kind and helpful to the students. I feel I can fit in
here pretty well and it fits my personality pretty well as well. I just absolutely Vivian is on the far left in pink.
love my host family so much, after knowing them and spending time with them
for almost two years now, I do think that they are probably another main reason for me to come back for my last
year of high school. Now I am pretty much all done with my college applications stuff and all the headaches from
it, getting the help I need from our International counselor Mrs. Schumacher indeed made it a whole lot easier for
me to apply to colleges here in the States as an International student. It has been a wonderful two-year experience
for me at NEWLHS and I think the memory here I had will last me a life time.
Our International Student Program needs host parents…Currently, NEWLHS is home to
11 international students. Host families for the 2012-13 school year are needed to continue this program. At this
time host families for a sophomore boy from China and a South Korean girl are needed. If you are willing to open
your heart and home to an international student, please contact Kris Schumacher
at schumacherk@newlhs.com or 469-6810 as soon as possible.
The Borchardt Family - Blazers Through and Through
When you think of a family involved in the life of NEWLHS, you need look no further than Dave and Ruth Borchardt and
their kids Ben (’98), Bill (’01) and Abby (’06). The Borchardt’s have been such a blessing to the NEWLHS community of
faith – at Redeemer Lutheran church, at games, running auctions and building friendships with faculty, students, coaches
and families.
Dave and Ruth’s connection to N.E.W. began back when their kids were young. Seeing as they both came from a Lutheran
school background, they were looking for a church and school home in Green Bay. In 1983, they officially joined the
Redeemer congregation and sent all three kids through Redeemer Lutheran School.
From there, it was on to N.E.W. “Because of a core group of families that sent their kids to NEWLHS, others soon followed”
remembers Dave. They both soon got involved...very involved! Dave and Ruth agreed to help as Auction Co-Chairs
with Mike and Vicki Radue. For 10 years they led that effort that generated significant support for the school and countless
memories. “They were so fun to work at, but exhausting” says Dave and Ruth remembers the fun “creating themes, bringing
families together and celebrating Lutheran High”. For many years, that was the only auction around. Dave fondly recalls
the famous Packer Hummel figurine that sold for $1,400.
Dave and Ruth also remember the families and kids that they’ve met through the years. They wanted to make sure to give
credit to Dr. Peter and Theresa Falk. “They get the award for the longest span at the school!” With four graduates and two
current students, I believe they do! “We also loved meeting and getting to know students and families from outside the Lutheran
community. Brian Tilot was one of those kids that would have given you the shirt off his back. He seemed to really
have a great sense of appreciation for Lutheran education that sometimes we forget.” They also appreciated the friendships
that they created with other parents. “We had a strong connection to the supporting school families and kids. Knowing
most of the families was meaningful. We didn’t have to worry about where the kids were going because we knew what the
parents were all about.”
The Borchardt kids were, and still are, very involved, too. 1997 Homecoming King Ben, an NWTC Grad with a degree in
Marketing, played multiple sports, sang in the choir and held the title of “Superfan” from Dave Jones (teacher at Pilgrim and
father of NEWLHS alums Brett & Adam) for showing great school spirit at basketball games. Ben remembers teachers like
Mr. Stock for being “very special” to him and sports memories like the rivalry with Stockbridge, which he equated to the
Packers/Bears of high school soccer. “It was an intense rivalry!” You can still see Ben involved with the high school finance
committee and as a part of the Blazer Open Golf outing committee.
Younger brother Bill (’01), a graduate of UW-Platteville with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture has also stayed connected
to NEWLHS. During his time at the school, Bill was involved in pretty much everything he could be – sports, choir,
NHS, band. He even went on one of the first trips that Mr. McClellan leads every 3 years. His group went to London and
Paris. Bill and older brother Ben really went out of their way to get the soccer field ready to play the summer before Bill’s
senior year and they remain close with many NEW friends through various
activities, which include the ‘No Ticket Packer Tailgate Party’ that they host
every year, an event that you can find many alumni in attendance. Bill continues
with his service to Redeemer by serving as a Trustee and helping with
audio-visual needs during worship service. Bill’s leadership has been a blessing
at his church, in his community and in his connection to friends and family.
Abby, the youngest Borchardt, graduated from Concordia University Wisconsin
in 2010 with a degree in Public Relations and Business Communication.
Abby, too, was involved in just about everything – soccer, volleyball,
drama, choir, student council, NHS. “The advantage of being at N.E.W. was
that you can do everything – I didn’t have to make choices, which was great!”
Abby goes on to say that “I liked being close to so many friends and being involved in the life of the school. Abby remains
involved with her friends from N.E.W. and Concordia and says “my friendships are rooted in faith. The values-based education
and the experiences I’ve had made it so worth it for me. I also got a great education!”
The NEW connections don’t stop there. Abby is engaged to Matt Hinz (NEWLHS ’06) with the wedding to take place in
August of this year. “A bulk of our close friends are from NEW. 9 members of our wedding party are alumni.” Abby has also
remained dedicated to N.E.W. and has given her time to enhance the ministry here. She recently led a Thrivent sponsored
program to raise $900 for the school in a Facebook challenge to like the Northwest Thrivent chapter page and she led a Bible
study before school last year for our female students and their moms.
All three Borchardt kids felt that athletics played a major role in their faith development. “The Coaches at NEWLHS
(Meerstein, Stock, Steinhaus, McClellan, Plautz, Wudtke, Schaefer) were really great – they taught us much more than just
how to play a sport. It’s about faith and leadership for them. On top of that, they were/are great at what they do.”
Without a doubt, the Borchardt family has had, and continues to have, a major impact on our school. Through Ruth’s 9
years as Development Director, Dave’s time on the Board of Directors, the Auction leadership, the countless friendships
made and activities being involved in – through it all – the Borchardt’s have been great partners in this and true supporters
of our mission to Help Families Prepare Christian Leaders. As Ruth states, “We gave to NEWLHS because we believed
in the ministry. It has really helped to shape all of us and we’re proud of our kids because they’re now volunteering
their time, talent and treasures now like Dave and I did when the kids were young.” May God bless you Borchardt family as
you have been a blessing to N.E.W. Lutheran High!
