Lymangraduated from Blair Academy,Blairstown, N.J., in 1944 and wasassociated with our class, though hegraduated a year early in 1947. He spentseven years as manager and owner ofthe N.Y. Pennant Co., following thiswith 33 years at New Jersey BellTelephone, where he was deeplyinvolved with the AT&T divestiture.Ruth, Lyman’s wife of 60 years, sonDavid ’76, daughters Elizabeth ’78and Barbara P’13, and six grandchildren(including Holly Stuart Sandelands’13 and Andrew Kling ’08) survivehim. His brother, Harry R.H.Nicholas III ’45, predeceased him.Harry J. Corbett, who diedMarch 18, was on page 37. He waspreceded in death by his wife of 53 years,Jean, and leaves five children (includingson Brian ’77), second wife Dolores, andnumerous grandchildren. Harry hadworked for Gillette, and upon retirementanother firm, which sent him abroad foryears. He retired to Melbourne, Fla.There was a <strong>College</strong> event down herein Sarasota, Fla. President Daniel H.Weiss came to visit and talk with uslocals. I was one of them, accompaniedby Walter ’49 and Helen Hartl, friendssince early days. (Remember “PassionFlats”? They lived there, and apparentlystarted their young family.) Now,sometime later, we’re hanging on.Walter and I, of course, were the oldestgrads there. But there’s a big differencefrom earlier <strong>College</strong> events: There werewomen there—and they’re <strong>Lafayette</strong>graduates too!Still, the message is the same: The<strong>College</strong> is improving, evolving, staff isbeing enhanced, and tuition is probablygoing to rise. Walter and I braced Danafter the speech: How come U.S. News& World Report has lessened ourstanding from among the top 25 to30-something? He spent his careerat Franklin Institute in Philadelphiain the research and developmentdepartment, retiring in 1987. Heis survived by his wife of 63 years,Kathryn; a son, John; a daughter,Christine; and two grandchildren.We lost James Marcus of Deland,Fla., Jan. 6. Prior to graduating with abachelor’s in chemical engineering, Jimserved during World War II with theNavy Seabees in the South Pacific. Hiscareer included management positionswith Celanese Corp. and FluidDynamics. He was a member of Societyof Plastics Engineers and retired in 1988.He was an avid golfer and experiencedgardener. His wife of 55 years, Gladys,predeceased him in 2007. Many niecesand nephews survive him.On March 12, William Wallace diedin Pahrump, Nev. After <strong>Lafayette</strong>, heearned a master’s in engineering atLehigh University. During World WarII, he served as a staff sergeant in theArmy Corps of Engineers, and he wasrecalled to service during the KoreanWar. He was a civil engineer, designingsections of the interstate highwaysystem. William and his wife, Ethel,lived in Columbus, Ohio, until hisretirement. In addition to his wife,William is survived by a son, Brian;three daughters, Sue, Mary, and Kelly;and four grandchildren.The <strong>College</strong> has been updating itsalumni files and discovered thatthere were many classmates on theroster whose deaths were notpreviously reported. Usually, weare recognized as the class with thelargest percentage of returningmembers.Donald Estler reports he and Loisplanned to celebrate their 61st weddinganniversary April 5 (see photo fromtheir 60th online).David Schuster writes that he movedfrom Niskayuna N.Y., in 2000 toBreakers Landing on the east coast ofFlorida, about 10 miles south of VeroBeach. He is treasurer of the 72-unitcondominium, with the ocean 1,000feet from his front door. He plannedto attend reunion.Bob Williams does not use socialmedia, so he asks classmates to emailhim: willbob5@sbcglobal.net. Bobworked in the mechanical powerdivision of Westinghouse Electric fornine years, and then worked with RileyPower, designers of high-pressuresteam boilers, for 30 years. He waslocated mainly in the Chicago salesoffice. He is grateful for the GI Billand <strong>Lafayette</strong>. He served as presidentof the Chicago Engineers Club in1974. Bob taught GED classes forthree years at a homeless shelter inChicago. He is active with St. Mary’sEpiscopal Church in Park Ridge,Ill. Bob lost his wife to cancer nineweeks after celebrating their 50thanniversary. Bob is proud of hischildren: Marilyn is a nursepractitioner in a pulmonary practice,Rob is a musician entertainer, andCarol is a psychologist in a consultativeadvocacy. Bob’s hobby is writing asan amateur theologian.Thomas H. Adair died Dec. 18at age 87. Tom received a master’sfrom Columbia and taught French for10 years at the Collegiate School ofNew York. He was a veryspecial ’Pard with all of us for fouryears. At one point, he and his wiferaised kids here. We had some Quonsethuts on Sullivan Lane (named for theRevolutionary War general), and ofcourse, it got named Passion Flats.Most of you know a special story thatwas featured in Life magazine aboutour war that brought together BobNishiyama, the Kamikaze Kid, theJohnstone family’s loss in the mid tolate forties, and <strong>Lafayette</strong>. We visitedBob in Japan, and he was back for our50th in 2002. He passed on in his85th year, Jan. 7, but will remain inour hearts as a Leopard’s Leopard.Sayonara, amazing ’Pard.A Phi Kappa Tau from Washington,N.J., and a chemistry major in the U.S.Geologic Survey, Harold “Hal” Hoffdied March 3 at 84. At <strong>Lafayette</strong>, hewas in Little Theater and MarquisPlayers, and was program director forWJRH. In World War II, he served inthe famous Screaming Eagles of the101st Airborne, earning two BronzeStars. He continued to serve with theVanguard satellite and at the GoddardSpace Flight Center as associate directorof operations at NASA. Finally, heretired with his wife of 54 years,Elizabeth, to Myrtle Beach. They hadthree children and eight grandchildren.James O’Hara, 82, of Delta Upsilon,Teaneck, N.J., passed away Dec. 26.Another Prof. Bernard “Doc” Markleinchemistry major, Jim ran track andplayed soccer. He was a retiredstockbroker with Morgan Stanley.Lloyd Good Jr. was born Aug. 15,1930, and died March 18. He was asgood as they come—attorney, developer,gambler, innkeeper, plumber, andfisherman. A Leopard out ofGermantown Academy in FortWashington, Pa., and Culver (Ind.)Military Academy, he was part of a ’Pardclan with his brother Alan ’55 and hisnephew Alan Jr. ’78. His father wasnicknamed “The Baby Grand” becausehe was one of the founders of the PhilcoCorp. and its iconic cathedral radio. In the1950s, he was one of college baseball’sbest pitchers, helping the Leopards toa third-place finish in the 1953 <strong>College</strong>World Series. He pitched for foursummers for the Montreal Royals,a Triple-A Dodger farm team.While in the Marines, Ron earnedseveral medals, including theDistinguished Flying Cross. He movedto Longboat Key in 1984. His obit tellsof the pranks and stories he loved to doand tell. He leaves a wife and daughter.After cremation, his ashes were spreadin all the places he loved.F. After <strong>Lafayette</strong>,Fritz served in the Naval Reserve, fromwhich he retired after 23 years ofcommissioned service. He has twodegrees from Lehigh, an M.A. inhistory, and an M.Ed. in secondaryadministration, which enhanced his 30years in the Bethlehem School District.Following retirement, he taught Englishfor five years at Northampton CountyCommunity <strong>College</strong> and for severalyears was a member of the alumnicouncil of the <strong>College</strong> of Education,Lehigh University.Fritz also received several honors andawards, including president of the PhiDelta Kappa Chapter of LehighUniversity, Teacher Medal Award fromthe Freedoms Foundation of ValleyForge (1973), and the PennsylvaniaNewspaper Publishers’ AssociationAward for Editorial Writing (1963).Another Sigma Nu, Evan Hineman,has been cancer-free for five years.He does part-time consulting as anintelligence professional, advisingagencies and institutions on managingtechnical intelligence, promotingleadership development, and preventingemployee attrition. Evans spent twoyears of active service in the Army andsix years inactive. He spent the largerpart of his time with the CIA, wherehe was awarded the DistinguishedIntelligence Medal and the NationalIntelligence Distinguished ServiceMedal. As a volunteer for the AnnualFund, Evan has been in touch withSigma Nu brothers Ron Adams,Don Dates, John Dempwolf, PaulHoward, Jim Hunter, and JackYerger, and is still trying to contactPete Cole and Jack Mitchell.It was a treat to catch up withPhil Gehman and look back to thedays of singing under our beloveddirector John Raymond. Phil wasour incomparable accompanist on bothorgan and piano for four years. He’sstill at it, annually conducting TheGraduates at reunions and giving anoccasional organ recital near home inFort Washington, Pa. Startyour voice exercises, choristers!Rich Masters and I had a lengthyconversation, covering many stories,from his meeting Carole, to theirpresent interest in ballroom dancing.He is probably as graceful on the flooras he was on the baseball field. He andCarole met on a cruise in 1966, after hehad done his two years in the serviceand had put in several of his 38 yearswith Bell. She is a native of Canada andhas the distinction of being a memberof the 1961 World Figure SkatingTeam. Aftergraduating cum laude and Phi BetaKappa, he served two years at FortBenning, finishing first in the BasicIntelligence Officers Course, andeventually was appointed tactical officerand executive officer at Benning. Hefinished his Army Reserve service as acaptain and then returned to Easton toteach in the family-owned ChurchmanBusiness School. Eventually becomingpresident and director, he continued toteach business law. Following retirementand sale of the school in 1995, Charliecontinued to serve in several voluntarypositions in the Easton area, onmunicipal and county boards, as well asat the state level on various educationboards and agencies. Although Charlie isadjusting to Parkinson’s disease, he andConnie enjoy summers at their homeon the Delaware River, a few milesnorth of Phillipsburg. Charley and I roomed together ourjunior and senior years, so I got to knowDonna well. Heand Barbara planned to be in Israel atthe time of our 55th, attending thewedding of their granddaughter.Life after <strong>Lafayette</strong> has beeninteresting and challenging for Jack.Following Brooklyn Law School, he hada successful career in jewelry marketing.But after a few disappointing years, Jackmoved on to a unique specialty. Underthe shingle Jack Kolbrener & Associates,he managed international drug testing ofcrews on transoceanic oil tankers. Thetests are done without announcementand involve a large workforce and muchinternational travel. Jack and wife Barbaratake great pride in their daughter andtwo sons. The awards werepresented March 15 by the UnitedHospital Fund in the Grand Ballroomof the Waldorf Astoria.Steve and his second wife, Ann, havea 14-month-old grandson named EliasMichael Andors, who lives in Lawrence,Mass., with their daughter Jessica,whose own mother passed away in1992. After servingas a principal and then superintendentof schools in Bolton Landing, N.Y.,Marks moved to Westbrook, Conn., inthe ’90s and became superintendent.He and wife Louise are now retired.Marks has kept in touch with BobOldt, who is a physician in Oxnard,Calif., and lives nearby in Ventura.Warren Eberlein is retired fromXerox, where he was a systems supportmanager, and now lives in NewtownSquare, Pa. He keeps in touchwith many of his Phi Delt brothers andlooked forward to seeing them atreunion.Ed Auble, as chairman of the 250thanniversary celebration of the namingof Paoli, Pa., was invited to Corte,Corsica, as a guest of friends fromFrance. For over 20 years, Paoli has hada twin city relationship with Corte. Thecommon thread is Gen. Pasquale dePaoli, who was responsible for liberatingCorsica from the Genoveses in the mid-18th century and establishing aconstitutional democracy there, the firstin Europe. Auble received a receptionand welcome dinner. A few days later,he visited University of Corsica andpresented a gift from the Paoli BusinessAssociation to the director of the PaoliFoundation. In addition, he wasinterviewed on local radio anddesignated as the first internationalambassador of the foundation. Hagerty, wholives in Escondido, Calif., was a formerowner and operator of an automotive,tire, and brake repair service center. Henow investigates and provides experttestimony and reports on various kindsof vehicular incidents, 2,600 of them todate. A licensed private investigator anda certified vehicle fire investigator, he isqualified to testify in state and federalcourts.I met with Bob Buchanan, VanCleef, and Auble at Morgan Hill GolfClub in Easton to discuss the reuniongolf outing there. Buchanan noted thathe enjoys retirement and continues topursue his hobby of woodcarving,mostly ducks.Otto Behrens earned a master’s ineducation from SUNY–Oneonta and anEd.D. from Rutgers. Roygraduated with a bachelor’s inmetallurgical engineering and receiveda master’s from Northeastern Universityin engineering management in 1969.In 1978, he became a registeredprofessional engineer. Roy served as afi rst lieutenant in the Army OrdnanceCorps, 1964–66, and in 1965commanded a 185-man ordnancecompany in Vietnam. In subsequentyears, he was a welding developmentengineer with General Electric FlightPropulsion of Lynn, Mass. Roy hadbeen a resident of Oak Ridge, Tenn.,for 32 years before retiring in 2007to Elon. A talented trumpet andcornet player, he especially enjoyedperforming with community concertbands. While living in Tennessee, hefounded and directed the DiscoveryBrass ensemble, 1978–81, and enjoyedperforming with brass quintets in localchurches. He played in the Oak RidgeSymphony, Oak Ridge CommunityBand/Wind Ensemble, and EastTennessee Concert Band. He thenjoined the New York firm started by hisgrandfather and father, Elliott Harris’36, Merrit & Harris. Initially anengineer and vice president, he servedas president and CEO from 1978until 1997, when he formed HarrisConsulting in Riverside, Conn. Heand Jane, his wife of 43 years, lived inGreenwich, Conn., for 41 years. He wasactive in Riverside Yacht Club, youthsports as a coach, and his church, wherehe taught Sunday School and supportedfaith and youth-based organizations. Anavid, lifelong angler, he was a memberof American Littoral Society (see alsnyc.org) and Trout Unlimited. Themoney raised at the event benefittedTeddy’s school, Elwyn, which serveschildren with special needs. Teddy wasexpected to live only for a few monthsafter his birth in 1989, but he lived18 years. Boyd is Nutremia projectmanager at Cognis Australia, which lastyear opened a state-of-the-art facility forthe production of carotenoid-enrichedartemia (brine shrimp), a critical foodfor young fish and prawns.Finally, I came upon an interesting<strong>Lafayette</strong> connection last summerwhile vacationing in Acadia NationalPark on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. Theisland has carriage roads built in the1920s by John D. Rockefeller, whichprovide a picturesque way to travelaround the park. He built many of theroads on his own land, subsequentlydonated to the government to becomepark property. Local residents,including George Wharton PepperH’22, opposed portions of thecarriage roads because they felt at thetime that the roads would lead tosignificantly increased access to thepark, which would diminish itsinherent beauty. (Back then, the parkwas named <strong>Lafayette</strong> National Park;the name was changed to AcadiaNational Park in 1929). She and her husbandmoved to Oklahoma, bought a house,and got a rescue puppy.In January, Dan Berteletti receivedhis master’s in energy systems engineeringfrom Northeastern University.He is an energy efficiency consultantwith a small fi rm based in Quincy,Mass. He performs audits on smallbusinesses, restaurants, schools,and hospitals and provides projectmanagement for the installationof energy-efficient equipment. Danalso entered his fi rst Half Ironmancompetition, which he planned toattempt in New Hampshire in June.Thanks to everyone who sentupdates and pictures.On April 13, Reco Collins receivedthe Lowell B. Mason NationalVolunteer of the Year award fromNetwork for Teaching Entrepreneurship(NFTE). He was chosen as the topvolunteer in the United States andworldwide for the impact he has hadin the community. NFTE providesentrepreneurship curriculum tostudents in middle and high schoolsin low-income communities. Theorganization has programs in 24Baltimore schools. Reco, vice presidentof public fi nance for PNC Bank,Baltimore, Md., has participated formore than five years with NFTE’sprogram at Digital Harbor HighSchool, fi rst as a business plan coachand then as an in-school and citywidecompetition judge, guestspeaker, and currently as a memberof the local Entrepreneurs’ Council.Having grown up in inner-cityAtlanta, Reco said NFTE presentedthe perfect opportunity for him toreach out and help lift up kids witha similar background. After battlingher own depression after a cousin’ssuicide, Francesca was named “Survivorof the Year” by the Greater Philadelphiachapter of the American Foundationfor Suicide Prevention and formallyreceived the award in May.Sydney Peyser founded theBorn To Be Me Campaign in 2010,which is in the process of becominga nonprofit. The mission of thecampaign is a universal movementto encourage each of us to accept,love, and empower one’s self.
