Creation of sustainable communities and the maintenance ofexisting communities involves integrating urban and landscapedesign, urban and building conservation and architecturalquality criteria at every level in the planning process andeffective co-ordination of hard and soft infrastructure provisionin developing areas. High quality “place-making” must alsorecognise the importance of locational criteria in the promotionof a sustainable built environment;An objective with regard to the production of a sustainable builtenvironment is that the value of the existing built environment asa resource for the future is recognised and exploited. Subjectto protecting its cultural value, continuing use of the existingbuilding stock should be an important objective in both publicand privately led development;The <strong>Government</strong> will enter into active collaboration withprofessional bodies, statutory agencies and institutions toestablish a comprehensive approach to promoting awarenessof the value of good architecture and environmental design andin fostering the demand for quality balanced with the need forvalue for money;The <strong>Government</strong> recognises that appreciation of the culturaland artistic value of architecture has an important role insupporting educational and awareness initiatives that developpublic engagement with the built environment;The <strong>Government</strong> takes the view that environmental educationshould continue to form part of curricula across the spectrumof institutions and specialist subjects. Initiatives to encouragecross-campus engagement with students and staff throughexhibitions, lectures and debates will further the developmentof a wider understanding of architecture and the built urbanand rural environment. Schools of Architecture are a potentialresource in this regard;The <strong>Government</strong> recognises the educational value of buildingprojects and seeks to exploit this potential in projects for whichit is responsible and to encourage agencies procuring buildingsto do so wherever possible;The Implementation Programme for the <strong>Policy</strong> on Architecturewill set specific goals and timeframes for Actions in the <strong>Policy</strong>and for providing feedback on progress;The production and management of a sustainable high qualitybuilt environment will be advanced by integrating architecturaldesign and planning frameworks.17 01 – Introduction
